Journal of an Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia in search of a Route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria

London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1848. Octavo, all plates and maps linen-backed. Modern full leather, gilt decoration. Sir Thomas Mitchell's account of his fourth and last expedition. In late 1845, with Edmund Kennedy as his second-in-command, Mitchell set out from Sydney in search of an overland route to the Port Essington settlement. Although he did not find the hoped-for route, over the next year he explored a vast area of unknown country in tropical Queensland, returning to Sydney in December 1846. As with his earlier expeditions, Mitchell showed contempt for official orders, preferring instead to follow his instincts. In this instance he seemed more interested in discovering the fabled Kindur River, one of his more enduring but erroneous beliefs. To justify his decision, he here represented his discovery of the Victoria River (which was in fact the Barcoo) as the legendary great north-flowing source. Although Mitchell did not succeed in finding a northward route and - if anything - further confused the riddle of the inland rivers upon his return, the expedition charted a vast area of previously unknown country without significant mishap or the loss of a single man. From the Collection of Robert Edwards.

She then left for a November 8th concert in Southampton. A year earlier, E.B.         Obstetric Tables : Comprising Graphic Illustrations, with Descriptions and Practical Remarks : Exhibiting on Dissected Plates Many Important Subjects in Midwifery

Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co, Philadelphia 1848 - Lithographs, with overlays; colored; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1848 Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. , Philadelphia. "First American edition from the fourth and greatly improved London edition". There were at least two ealier American printings in 1847 by Wagner & McGuigan and by Thomas, Cowperthwait. Bound in a later 19th century full calf with red morocco title label brightly lettered in gilt to spine. Soundly bound with contents complete, including the subscriber's lists at front and the single page ad at rear. Including the tissue garded frontis there are 21 full page lithograhped plates, most with mechanical overlays and hand colored with tissue guards. At leat one plate has a tissue guard integral between the colored overlay leaves. Table I. B. - one of the non overlay lithographs with 4 figures of the pelvis - had apparently come loose from the book and has some light furring at the edges; it isreinserted on a heavier paper stub in what appears to be a repair from some decades ago. The front edge was also backed with a heavier paper strip to reinforce a short closed tear in the front margin. All the overlays are present and in very good handling order with only light evidence of use and prior viewing at the folds. The only tissue guard missing is for the reinserted plate I. B. Tissue guard for the frontis lithograph is well foxed with some offset foxing to the title page. . Surface of lithographs are generally bright and clean, though the blank reverse side of many plates are foxed with some offset foxing and toning to the facing page of text. Bookplates of two prior owners mounted to front pastedown - Mrs. Elliot Colburn Low and Leonard J. Schiff. Binding sound but some early tenderness in the front hinge to the top few inches of the external joint. Leather with mild surface furring at front edges and a shallow surface abrasion rear board adjacent to the tail. Altogether a rather well preserved example of this extraordinary color plate book on obstetrics and midwifery. VG .         Horseshoe Fall (from the Canada side) [Niagara Falls] 20

New York: Goupil, Vibert & Co, 1848. 1st Edition. No binding. Good. KÖLLNER, After Augustus Theodore Frederick Adam Horseshoe Fall (from the Canada side)1848.Paper Size: 17.25' x 12.25" Image Size: 11" x 7.5" (image only, not including border or type). Colour lithograph, with additional hand-colouring, printed by Cattier. Some foxing in outer border and border scuffing in a couple of places, otherwise overall good condition. NIAGARA FALLS [printed at top]; Drawn from nature by Aug. Kollner [printed below image, left]; New-York & Paris, published by Goupil, Vibert & Co. | 20 | HORSESHOE FALL | (from the Canada side.) | Entered according to act of congress, in the year 1848, by Aug. Kollner, in the clerk's office of the district court for the southern district of New-York. [printed below image, center]; Lith. by Deroy. Printed by Cattier. [printed below image, right] This lovely lithograph of Horseshoe Fall, with Terrapin Tower in the distance at left. Goupil, Vibert & Co. published a set of 54 of Kollner's views of American cities, including eight prints of Niagara. A finely observed view of one of the great natural wonders of the world. An excellent image from Köllner's highly important series Views of American Cities (New York and Paris, 1848-1851). This series of 54 plates was commissioned from Köllner by Goupil, Vibert and Company and was issued both coloured and uncoloured.Born in Württemburg in 1812, Köllner's first recorded work was when he was hired at the age of sixteen by the Stuttgart printer Carl Ebner to work on portfolios of etchings of horses and other animals. He came to America in 1839 and settled in Washington briefly, before moving to Philadelphia in 1840 where he lived and worked for the next 60 years. The present print is from what was probably his most important commission and certainly brought him to the attention of the art-buying public. Köllner's body of topographic work "makes a distinct contribution to the documentation of the nineteenth-century American scene" (Deak p.334).Cf. Deak 560; J. Harper Early Painters and Engravers in Canada p.183; Spendlove The Face of Early Canada p.72. Peters, p. 254-55.

        Selbstbildnis

        Steam Warfare in the Parana:

London: Charles Ollier,, 1848. A Narrative of Operations by the Combined Squadrons of England and France in forcing a Passage up that River. 2 volumes octavo. Original purplish-brown vertically finely ribbed cloth with elaborate panels in blind to the boards, title gilt to the spines, pale cream surface-paper endpapers. Folding lithographed map frontispiece to volume I together with 2 wood-engraved plates, wood-engraved frontispiece to volume II, half-titles present. A little rubbed, spines sunned, upper board of volume II mottled at the fore-edge, light toning, foxing to the prelims of volume II, remains a very good set. First edition. Uncommon account of the Anglo-French naval interventions against Rojas's Argentine Confederation written by a participant. Mackinnon "obtained the particular mention of Commodore Sir Chas., Hotham for the skill he exemplified in the command of the rocket-party [at San Lorenzo], which had been obliged to remain two days and nights concealed under the enemy's nose" (O'Byrne). Despite the successful forcing of the river at Obligado by the Anglo-French squadrons, the consequent settlement, dictated by financial and political considerations, was highly favourable to the Argentines. Following Obligado, "There was little further resistance; and although the allies afterwards relieved Montevideo from an attack by some of the friends of Rosas, and, for a time, occupied the city, the difficulties at issue thenceforward became the subject rather of diplomatic negotiations than of active measures. Many of the advantages which had been gained were, unfortunately, sacrificed or neutralised by the terms of the settlement; but in spite of the rather unhandsome manner in which the services of the Navy on this most creditable expedition were treated by the Government, it must be admitted that seldom have British officers, bluejackets, and Marines deserved better of their country" (Clowes, VI, p.345). Ownership inscription of Spencer N. Dickson, sometime Chilean consul in London to the half- title of volume I, a few informed pencilled annotations to the margins.

Dealings with the Firm Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail, and Exportation

London: Bradbury & Evans 1848 - Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"). First edition, with nearly all of the issue points called for by Smith. Finely bound in contemporary marbled boards over dark brown morocco by D. Condie, with four raised bands to the spine, with decorative ornaments and vine motifs to the spine compartments in gilt, lettered in gilt, red speckled endpapers. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, rubbing to the boards, light toning and a hint of rubbing to the spine, spine cracked inside the front cover, signature C slightly loose, otherwise sturdy and secure binding, a few faint spots to the otherwise bright and fresh pages that lack the usual heavy toning. Overall, a clean and attractive copy, free of any repairs or restorations. Smith I, 8. Originally published serially in twenty parts issued in nineteen monthly installments from October 1846 - April 1848, Dombey and Son is a novel about the wealthy Dombey family who owns the titular shipping company Dombey and Son. The text follows Paul Dombey, Sr., who has high hopes for his sickly son, Paul, as a future business partner, and neglects his healthy daughter, Florence. Throughout the text, Dickens explores the relationship between one's personal and professional lives as well as the relationship between parent and child. Considered the text that solidified his reputation as a renowned author, Dombey and Son is regarded as Dickens' first artistically mature work, with carefully plotted serial installments and a preplanned outline for the entire work. Dickens wrote this book in various locations including Switzerland, England, and France. Dombey and Son contains 40 illustrations by Browne, published and signed under the pseudonym Phiz, including two plates that were etched as well as drawn by the illustrator. Dombey and Son marked a successful experiment in new illustration techniques; it contains the first published example of a "dark plate," appropriately titled "On the Dark Road" (page 457), "which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast." Additionally, Dombey and Son is the first example of Browne's horizontal illustrations for Dickens' novels. He would continue to use both of these techniques in Dickens' next novel, David Copperfield. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Natural History of the Human Species

Edinburgh - W. H. Lizars, 1848 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this scarce Victorian polygenistic examination of the human species. With an engravedportrait frontispiece of the author and additional vignette title. Seven black and white plates and twenty-sevencoloured hand-finished chromolithographic plates to the rear(collate complete). Intended as a supplementry volume to Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library. Binders stamp of Otheran, London to verso of front free-endpaper. Charles Hamilton Smith, (17761859), soldier, spy, illustrator, antiquary and natural historian. From a very early age, Smith had industriously sketched and accumulated data. His interests were wide, so that his sketchbooks included historical, zoological, archaeological, and topographical subjects. His interest in such topics persisted through his time as a soldier; after retirement they became all-absorbing. His manuscript notes (and thousands of watercolour drawings) were made mostly for his own instruction and that of any student who asked to see them. Smith's numerous publications, with his lectures at the Plymouth Athenaeum, made him well known. His industry enabled him to master several disciplines and his accuracy of observation assisted him in the making of accurate drawings of his subjects. Interested in history, as well as the natural sciences, he often gave information to the theatre managers William Charles Macready (17931873) and Charles John Kean (18111868) and his brother Edmund (17871833) on the correct costumes for their productions. Smith's authorship of historical books on war included the translation of accounts of the Seven Years' War in Germany, a piece on the military exploits of the duke of Marlborough (for Coxe's biography), and a narrative of the retreat of Napoleon from Moscow, which he wrote in French. He also contributed articles on the subject of war to encyclopaedias. Many of these works were illustrated from his own drawings and watercolours. The illustrations in his natural history books were also based on his own original sketches. Some of Smith's drawings were used for the illustrations in a number of volumes which he wrote for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: two volumes of the Natural History of Dogs (1839 and 1840), the Natural History of Horses (1841), and Introduction to the Mammalia (1842). A Natural History of the Human Species (1848) was designed to complement these volumes, and included his engraved portrait for the frontispiece. Besides these major titles, he wrote and illustrated numerous articles for scientific journals. DNBCondition: Rebacked in calf with original morocco and marbled paper boards. Externally sound, the spine excellent, rubbing to the older leather and paper. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout, very slight age-toning. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Journal of an Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia. Journal of an Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia in search of a Route from Sydney to the Gulf of Carpentaria

Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, London 1848 - Octavo, all plates and maps linen-backed.
