Gesetz der Urgesundheitskunde. Erneuert zu München, am 21. und 22. Iuli 1847.

München, 1847.Lithographierter Einblattdruck. 32 x 38,5 cm. Mehrfach gefaltet. AUTHENTIC COMMODORE PERRY SIGNED ORDERS LETTER This document reads: "The Officers, Seamen and Marines at present on shore at Tuspan will be ready to embark at 4 o'clock tomorrow morning, & every person with the artillery small arms munitions, baggage and every article belonging to the expedition will be on board by 1/2 past 5 A.M., ready for crossing the Bar. The artillery and heavy baggage will be placed in the captured Launches, which ar to be secured by good towlines. It is expected that the whole Flotilla will be on the Bar by 1/2 past 6." Boldly signed by "M.C. Perry" as Commanding Home Squadron. Though the Mexican War was not yet over, the naval battles in the Gulf of Mexico ended with the surrender of the powerful fortress at Vera Cruz on March 27, 1847. Within five years, Perry was to go to Japan to in an historic expedition to open that country to world trade. Perry [1794-1858] was an American naval office, who command- ed the expedition that established United States relations with Japan. Born April 10, 1794, in South Kingston, Rhode Island, the brother of Oliver Hazard Perry, he began his naval career as midshipman at the age of 15. He advanced to lieutenant in 1813 and to commander in 1826. He supervised the construction of the first naval steamship, the Fulton, and upon its completion in 1837,he took command with the rank of captain. He was promoted to commodore in 1842. In 1846-47 he commanded the Gulf squadron during the Mexican War. In 1853, Perry was sent to Japan, a country that had been closed to outsiders since the 17th century. On July 8, he led a squadron of four ships into Tokyo Bay & present- ed representatives of the Emperor with the text of a propos- ed commercial and friendship treaty. To give the reluctant Japanese court time to consider the offer, he then sailed for China. With an even more powerful fleet, he returned to Japan in February 1854. The treaty, signed on March 31, 1854 provided that humane treatment be extended to sailors ship- wrecked in Japanese territory, that U.S. ships be permitted to buy coal in Japan, and that the ports of Shimoda & Hako- date be opened to U. S. commerce. Perry's mission ended Japan's 400 years of self-imposed isolation, a prerequisite for its subsequent development into a modern nation. Perry died in New York City on March 4, 1858.         Monterey, As seen from a house-top in the main Plaza, [to the west.] October, 1846. [No. 1 of a Series.] [after the capture of the city by the U.S. Forces under Gen'l Taylor]

New York: G. & W. Endicott, 1847. Black & white lithograph. Engraved by Chas. Fendrich after Whiting. In excellent condition. Image size: 12 1/2 x 18 1/4 inches. From Whiting's "Army Portfolio," a very scarce series of Mexican War views, which is not only one of the primary visual records of the conflict, but also a fine topographical work that accurately recorded the area at a crucial turning point in its history. "The rarest lithographs of the war." (Tyler) According to Whiting family tradition, the work was limited to no more than 24 sets (quoted by Goodspeed's of Boston: "The Month at Goodspeed's Book Shop" vol. XXI, nos. 2-3, Nov-Dec. 1959, p. 43). In late 1845, General Taylor's army was camped at Corpus Christi, Texas. In January 1846, they advanced to the United States side of the Rio Grande, where they remained until May, and then marched on to the strongly fortified city of Monterey, which was taken in September. Whiting's work documents this campaign. Although he originally intended to continue the series beyond five plates, the original drawings for the additional plates were lost aboard a steamboat that sank in the Mississippi. Daniel Powers Whiting was born in Troy, New York, and graduated in 1832 from the U.S. Military Academy, where he received formal training as a topographical artist. He was assigned to the 7th U.S. Infantry, with which he served in various garrisons before being promoted to captain in the spring of 1845. During the Mexican War, he served in the army of General Zachary Taylor and was made Major "for gallant and meritorious conduct" in the battles of Fort Brown, Monterey, Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo. After the war, he fought the Seminoles, joined the Utah expedition of 1859, served in various garrisons in Missouri and Kansas, and completed frontier duty in the Indian Territory. During the Civil War, he commanded at Fort Garland, Colorado (1861-1862), was a member of the Board of Examination at Annapolis (1862-1863), and commanded at Fort Mifflin, Pennsylvania (1864). At the time of his retirement for "disability resulting from long and faithful service," he was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 6th Infantry. Cf. America on Stone , p. 175; cf. Eberstadt, 162, 910; cf. Streeter Sale, 275; cf. Tyler, The Mexican War , pp. 24-45.

Cinncinnati: J.A. & U.P.James, 1847. 12mo signed in fours and eights. (8 1/8 x 4 5/8 inches). 189pp. Original printed front wrapper, with spine and rear wrapper in matching paper. One of the most complete accounts of wagon trail life: first edition, second issue, with corrections made on pages 31 and 121 and without the errata slip tipped in at page 189. Waves of overland immigration engulfed Oregon from 1843 onwards. The overland migration of 1845 was one of the largest, and it also produced the present work by Joel Palmer. Howes describes this as the "Most reliable of the early guides to Oregon." Also included in the work is a letter from Rev. Spalding about his missionary work among the Nez Perce; a vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon and the Nez Perce language; a description of Mount Hood; and what Streeter describes as one of the earliest printings of the Organic Laws of Oregon Territory.         Über die Erhaltung der Kraft

Berlin: G. Reimer, 1847. Helmholtz, Hermann von (1821-1894). Über die Erhaltung der Kraft, eine physikalische Abhandlung. . . . [4], 72pp. Berlin: G. Reimer, 1847. 214 x 133 mm. 19th century half calf, marbled boards, rebacked and corners repaired, light wear. Very good copy. 19th century engraved bookplate of Dr. Edmund Atkinson (1831-1901), professor of applied science at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst (Great Britain). First Edition. On the basis of this short paper, written when he was only twenty-six, Helmholtz is ranked as one of the founders, along with James Joule and J. R. von Mayer, of the principle of conservation of energy. The paper sets forth the philosophical and physical basis of the energy conservation principle. Helmholtz maintained that the scientific world view was based on two abstractions, matter and force, and since the only possible relationship that can exist among the ultimate particles of matter is a spatial one, then ultimate forces must be moving forces radically directed. This can be inferred from the impossibility of producing work continually from nothing. Helmholtz analyzed different forms of energy and different types of force and motion, grouping them into two categories, active (kinetic) and tension (potential). He also gave mathematical expression to the energy of motion, providing an experimental measure for research on all forces, including those of muscle physiology and chemistry. FROM One of the most desirable of all travel and COLOURplate books. AN especially pretty image, the ruins beautifully rendered with colorfully dressed people scattered about them. The island of Bigge, adjacent to Philae, was part of the site of the tomb of Osiris. Only the priests from Philae were permited to even set foot on the island, let along enter the temples. We have a good number of impressive images from the Standard Folio Edition of this classic work available for purchase. As well as many views of Egypt we also have available, views of Nubia, Petra, Sinai, the Jordan, Tyre, Sidon and Baalbec. Please inquire for further details. In the course of two and a half months in 1838, traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo, Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt, set on "Plains so vast...that, until you come near them, you have no idea of their magnificence," Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin, writing in PRAETERITA, Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter, not to exhibit his own skill, but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Boston. [ca. 1847].. Ninth-plate daguerreotype, 2 x 2 1/2 inches. Brass mat, framed under glass in contemporary leather case. Slight silvering of the surface area, spine of case perished. Very good. A significant, early daguerreotype portrait of an austere African-American woman, Eliza Middleton, taken in Boston in the mid-19th century. Includes a printed price list on verso, reading "Plumbe National Daguerrian Gallery, 75 Court Street, Boston, W.B. Eastman, Proprietor." As outlined by John S. Craig in volume two of his DAGUERREIAN REGISTRY, Walter B. Eastman operated the Plumbe gallery "at some point (probably 1847)," when this photograph was likely produced. John Plumbe was one of the earliest American daguerreotypists; he opened his first gallery in 1840, and then franchised his operation, with several dozen galleries operating in the late 1840's. Plumbe sold them all and went to California in 1849, but the Boston gallery retained his name until 1852. The name Eliza Middleton is inscribed in pencil in leather case. There was a substantial African-American community in Boston from Revolutionary times, centered around the north slope of Beacon Hill. One of its most prominent members was George Middleton, who served with distinction in the American Revolution, and whose house, built in 1797, still stands. While reports of Middleton's marriage status and sexual preferences vary, it is likely that Eliza was a relative, and almost certainly a member of the free African-American community in Boston, which numbered around 2000 individuals at the time. Images of African-Americans in daguerreotypes are very rare, and in this instance offer historical insight into the vibrant Boston community. John S. Craig, CRAIG'S DAGUERREIAN REGISTRY: VOLUME 2, PIONEERS AND PROGRESS, ABBOTT TO LYTLE (Torrington, Ct., 1994), p.172.

New York, 1847. Additional handcolored titlepage in first volume. Quarto. Original morocco, elaborately stamped in pictorial gilt, rebacked, with original richly gilt backstrip laid down, a.e.g. Binding a bit rubbed and edgeworn. An occasional fox mark, but generally very clean internally. A very attractive copy. The first American edition of this fabulous work, featuring fine steel engravings of anthropomorphized plants in what can only be described as surreal situations, delicately handcolored. It would be difficult to single out one image which this cataloguer could label his favorite, but the personification of Hemlock, busily poisoning a rabbit, with a frog already pushing up daisies and a mouse losing its dinner in the background, or the poor Hawthorne, being pursued by clippers with legs and a leering face, are sufficient to indicate the tone of the plates. Bennett suggests that "the altogether charming and graceful text is certainly a far cry from the mess of assorted poems generally used by Americans as the background of color plate flower volumes." "The steel plates for this American edition were cut, with some changes from the Paris original, in New York. The publisher could not resist adding the names of several New York florists to the plate 'The Flower Market.' Despite its grotesque images, it is perhaps the most elaborate book of its kind from the gift book era" - STAMPED WITH A NATIONAL CHARACTER.

Mexico City, 1847. single folded sheet. Old vertical crease. Three tears along the central fold, resulting in loss of paper but no text. Very good. A rare copy of an important order issued by Gen. Winfield Scott just days after his victory at the Battle of Chapultepec and his taking of Mexico City. Chapultepec was the final victory in Scott's march to the Mexican capital, following victories at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, and Molino del Rey. Largely outnumbered against Santa Anna's forces, Scott produced a series of stunning victories leading to his capture of Mexico City and the issuance of this broadside, which seeks to establish order by proclaiming martial law in the capital. A preamble to the General Orders announces that this is a restatement, "with important additions," of Scott's order of Feb. 19, 1847, issued from Tampico, which also declared martial law. In the present order, meant to maintain order in the newly conquered city, Scott lays out the prohibitions for a wide variety of acts, including assassination, murder, poisoning, rape, assault, robbery, theft, the desecration of churches and cemeteries, and more. Significantly, he announces that such rules will apply equally to Americans as to Mexicans. He points out that these laws are important not only to guide his army, but "for the protection of the unoffending inhabitants and their property, about the theatres of military operations, against injuries on the part of the army, contrary to the laws of war." Scott further extends martial law to any part of Mexico under the control of U.S. forces. Lastly, he announces that the American army will safeguard all of the churches, monasteries, convents, inhabitants, and property in Mexico City, and announces a "contribution" of $150,000 to be imposed on the capital to pay for these services, payable in four equal installments. The order is signed in manuscript at the end by Winfield Scott's Assistant Adjutant General, H.L. Scott. Garrett locates the copy at the University of Texas at Arlington, and OCLC adds copies at the California State Library (Sutro copy) and the University of North Carolina.

[Various locations], 1847. Typical mailing folds, some soiling and staining. Overall very good. A collection of three letters written from soldiers in the Mexican-American War to David Hofins of Bedford, Pennsylvania. Details of each letter are as follows: 1) Langdon, John P., of "Co. B. 4th Arty. USA": Autograph letter, signed. Monclova, Mexico. Nov. 8, 1846. [4]pp. Langdon reports that his regiment is two hundred miles north of Gen. Zachary Taylor's force at Monterey and eighty miles west of the Rio Grande. He also includes rumors of the possible taking of Chihuahua with no loss of men. 2) Mann, Ben Frank: Autograph letter, signed. Island of Lobos, Mexico. Feb. 23, 1847. [3]pp. Mann writes about the American plans to land Gen. Winfield Scott's army near Vera Cruz to begin the city's siege, which began on March 9 and lasted until March 29. Postmarked from New Orleans, the letter reads in part: "As the Government intends to use it [Lobos] as a depot during the war on account of the excellent anchorage which it affords, the safest I believe on the Gulf...the two regts. from Penn, the South Carolina Regt, the Regts from Louisiana, Mississippi and New York are here, on the Island, there are a number of Regulars on the vessels in the harbor...there are upwards of thirty vessels in the Harbor. Gen Scott arrived here yesterday, and we are to embark during this week, on Friday it is supposed at the latest. Our destination is Green Island six miles below Vera Cruz where we will be landed and weather permitting....As soon as it [Vera Cruz] is captured we will be placed on the route to the Capitol." 3) Marin, Lieut. E.C.: Autograph letter, signed. St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans. April 29, 1847. [2]pp. Marin, much taken with the pleasures of life in New Orleans, writes to Hofins about the city and traveling via steamboat down the Mississippi River: "The comforts and luxuries of traveling on the Mississippi must surpass every other mode of traveling in the world...have plenty of company both male and female, music and dancing, flirtation and so forth...New Orleans, the Paris of America with the melting eyes of its 'brunettes' and the soft delicacy of its 'blondes' with all their fiery passions, for enjoyment, are enough to make man, like Adam of old, pluck from the forbidden tree.

Manuscript Journal of First Mate on the Brig Hyder Ali sailing from New York to Montevideo, Uruguay 1847-1848

Quarto. Quarter calf and marbled paper covered boards with blank leaves. Front board largely detached (hanging by a thread), pages modestly toned, a few page corners dogearred, but good or better. Ownership signature of "Edmund Jones, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Journal. Nov. 1st, 1847 On board the Brig Hyder Ali. Geo. W. Wetherill, Master." Jones has used all 124 of the blank leaves to meticulously record the events of a journey carrying lumber from New York to Montevideo, in a reasonably legible hand. He notes his efforts to gain a berth, and then reports the weather, sailing information, and location, as well as the fishing. The Hyder Ali was caught up in a conflict between Argentina and Uruguay, and are for a while kept from their destination by a blockade, and in their turn are boarded by U.S., French, and British warships. Additionally they are fired upon and hit by cannon from Argentine shore batteries. Caught in Montevideo for a time, he provides a good description of the inhabitants, the city, and the docks. At the conclusion of the journal Jones notes the entire crew's roster, noting that one crew member was struck by a boom, knocked over board, and drowned. Our research indicates that Edmund Jones (1824-1900) never married, he was a seaman or mate on "several ocean going vessels," he lived for several years in the silver mining district of Montana, returned to New York, and died of pneumonia at Cold Spring Harbor. Apparently, he left his journal behind when he went west, and another owner's name, "Frank Long" appears, along with a note appended on the last leaf that Long has been contracted to build a blacksmith shop in Oyster Bay. A lively, better than usual, sailor's journal. .

"4 Hobart Place Eaton Sqa.", i. e. London, 28. IV. 1847. - 8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To Mrs. Erskine, possibly the wife of the Scottish orientalist and historian William Erskine: "Mr. Mendelssohn presents his Compts. to Mrs. Erskine & regrets most sincerely not to be able to accept of Mrs. Erskine's very kind invitation; as he must leave London already next week he is not sure whether he will be able to thank Mrs. Erskine in person for her kind note, but he hopes to find an opportunity of doing so [.]". - Mendelssohn was known to have been in London in April 1847, to hear Jenny Lind sing in Meyerbeer's "Robert le Diable". Mendelssohn greatly admired Lind and in the 1840s she became a protégée - it was rumoured that in 1847 he had written to her to suggest an elopement, though she was married at the time. - On laid paper watermarked "J. WHATMAN", with two early horizontal folds, in very good condition. - Though not formally signed, the use of his name at the beginning is effectively a signature. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[South Texas & Mexico]. 1847-1848.. [7]pp. Each letter a single quarto bifolium. Two horizontal and two vertical mailing folds in each, one letter with two small holes created when the seal was broken, minor fold separations, some soiling and staining. Good. Thomas Griffin writes to Miss Elizabeth Griffin, presumably his sister, who lived in New Geneva, Pennsylvania. Griffin appears to be heading to Mexico during the latter period of the war, his first letter written in the summer of 1847 and his second dated Jan. 30, presumably after his division proceeded south to Vera Cruz. This would put Griffin in Vera Cruz just days before the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on Feb. 3, 1848. ^1) Autograph letter. "Camp at the mouth of the Rio Grande." July 22, 1847. [4]pp. Stamp-postmarked on the address panel "Brazos July 26" and "10." Griffin writes in part: ^"Here I am at the mouth of the celebrated Rio Grande, on the disputed territory & within three hundred yards of the acknowledged Mexican line. Our Division of the army arrived here yesterday afternoon. I consider yesterday one of the greatest days of my life, worth the labor of one year at least. It was then I saw for the first time the territory of Texas & Mexico." ^Immediately following is a vivid description of the Texas landscape. He then describes in detail his rough sea voyage from New Orleans to south Texas, where his unit landed at Brazos Santiago, a former port located on Brazos Island, which Gen. Taylor had established as a supply depot for the American military during the Mexican- American War. ^2) Autograph letter, signed "Thomas." Pueblo, Mx. Jan. 30, [n.y., likely 1848]. [3]pp. Stamp- postmarked on the address panel: "Vera Cruz Mexo." Griffin writes about mail delivery: "I received yours of the 17th of December about two weeks ago, by a small escort of dragoons....I don't know when we will have mail down to Vera Cruz, probably not for a week or so." He also writes glowingly of the landscape he encounters: ^"I have long had an ardent desire to travel south particularly to Mexico and South America, & the wild, romantic & strange appearance of this most interesting country has entirely surpassed my expectations. I would not have missed coming here for anything in the world. Notwithstanding I have suffered and periled a good deal & expect to peril & suffer a deal more before the war is over." ^Griffin also writes almost a page on observations of locals: how he respects the way in which the Spanish and Mexican people take care of their "aged and infirm" (relaying a scene he witnessed in which locals helped a blind man), how the "higher classes among them" show respect to ladies, and his observations on witnessing a Mexican funeral.
