      N.P.: n.p., n.d.. variously bound. 100558|100937|101508|101950/PR. 4to. variously bound. unpaginated. 5 Volumes. Five volumes of engravings collected by George W. Casilear. Casilear was an engraver and landscape artist in New York from 1847 to 1852, working with his brother John W. Casilear from 1847 to 1848. In 1851, he produced, with Henry Bainbridge, A View of San Francisco, published by Sarony and Major in 1851. About the same time, he produced a view of Sacramento, also published by Sarony. He also produced the sketch used by G.V. Cooper for the frontispiece in Lett's Pictoral View of California. See George C. Groce and David H. Wallace, The New-York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860 (New Haven: Yale Univerity Press, 1957), 114. Casilear then worked as an editor, secretary and solicitor of patents from 1852 to 1857. In 1862, he became Chief of the Engraving Division of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Casilear was instrumental in the redesign of United States currency in 1864. One contemporary news account called his engraving of the landing of Columbus "superior to that of the original." (The Farmer's Cabinet, Amherst, New Hampshire, January 21, 1864). But in May 1878, Casilear was accused of "gross misconduct" and a congressional committee chair urged President Rutherford B. Hayes to remove him from office (Herald Tribune, New York, May 2, 1878). Casilear remained in office, and he would lead an investigation of counterfeiting of United States bonds based on evidence found by the Secret Service in Chicago (Herald Tribune, New York, October 1, 1880). See also Ben. Perley Poore, Congressional Directory (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1872 and 1881). Casilear was finally removed from office in 1885, being replaced by John A. O'Neill of Hoboken, New Jersey. News accounts stated that no charges of wrongdoing had emerged, and Casilear was "considered one of the best engravers in the country" (New York Times, April 17, 1885). But a subsequent news account stated that Casilear's replacement would "bring new life to a division that has been charged with a lack of ingenuity and freshness." The same account averred that Casilear had "never touched a graver or a plate in the production of a government note," noting his focus on designing silver certificates and bonds" (New York Times, April 18, 1885). Possibly, politics was a factor, the Democratic Cleveland administration having recently replaced the Republican Arthur administration. The seven volumes include well over 500 engravings mostly from England, continental Europe, with some from the United States. There is no apparent format of organization, but some points are worthy of note. One volume, labeled "Miscellaneous Engravings" includes a number of English engravings attributed to James Virtue, the National Gallery and the Royal Collection. Another, labeled "Engravings," also has a number of items attributed to Virtue. A third volume, labeled "Scrap Book-Engravings and Etchings by the Old and New School," includes mainly English, French and German items, with translations into English of some of the French captions. A fourth volume, labeled "Scrap Book," includes annotations with handwritten biographical information about many of the engravers and descriptive information about the engravings. A fifth volume includes an engraving of President Chester Arthur with a facsimile signature and date, along with French, English, German and American engravings. The scrap books feature artists such as Rembrant van Rijn, Samuel William Reynolds, Jacques Callot, Charles Heath, W. Unger, Francis Boucher, Sebastian Bourdon, John Henry Roos, George Benedetto Castiglione, Nicholas van Aelst, Gerard Dow, Martinet, and Francis Chereau to name a few. Five of the seven volumes are bound in half leather, marbled paper-covered boards. One is bound in leather, gilt decorated, and one half leather, cloth boards. Casilear's bookplate is on the front pastedown of each volume. The volumes are rubbed and scuffed at the edges, and there is some foxing.

        Kto Vinovat? Roman v dvuch chastyach [Russian. i.e.: Who Is To Blame? Novel in Two Parts].

      Sankt Peterburg, 1847. 8vo. Nice contemporary red half calf with five raised bands and gilt lettering. Spine neatly rebacked, preserving most of the original spine. Spine with a bit of wear. End-papers renewed. First two leaves with teares repaired from verso, far from affecting lettering, and no loss. Some browning and a bit of spotting to first leaves. 222 pp.. First edition of Herzen's major landmark work, constituting the first purely social Russian novel. The work was instrumental "in Herzen becoming a leading member of Russia's radical "Westernizing" intelligentsia" (Klosoko) and in him being regarded as "the father of Russian socialism".Chernyshevsky's economic and social philosophy expressed in the work (with the title that so obviously alludes to Herzen's) "What is to be Done" - arguably the most influential work ever written in Russia - is to a very large extend based upon the views that Herzen presents 16 years earlier, in the present novel, "Who is to Blame?". Herzen's detestation of capitalism and his hopes concerning the commune were also to a large extent adopted by the Russian populists (the narodniki movement), who created a revolutionary movement in Russia in the 1860ies and 1870ies.Herzen was considered a revolutionary and his writings were banned, making the original editions of them scarce. "While Rousseau, Sand and Dickens proved to be the three most important Western authors whose novels influenced Chernyshevsky's "What Is To Be Done?", within the Russian literary tradition it was Herzen's "Who Is To Blame?" [...] that exerted the greatest influence." (Introduction to "What Is To Be Done?")."Who Is To Blame?", written in the form of a fictional novel, is about Dmitry Krutsifersky, a liberal hero who becomes disillusioned with Russian society. Krutsifersky is hired to tutor the son of the rich landowner Negrov. Krutsifersky eventually marries Negrov's illegitimate daughter Lyubov and they have a child together. Their happiness is destroyed when a rich young landowner named Beltov becomes a friend of the family and begins an illicit relationship with Lyubov. Beltov ends up departing Russia for Europe, leaving the young couple with a broken and hopeless marriage.It is essentially a satire of the Russian landed gentry, showing their coarseness and pettiness and is famous in literature for its depiction of a "superfluous man" - a Russian literary concept derived from the Byronic hero by referring to an individual, perhaps talented and capable, who does not fit into social norms."Having read widely in Saint-Simon, Fourier, and the German Young Hegelians, Herzen claimed that, correctly understood, the Hegelian dialectic was an "algebra of revolution." He welcomed the revolutions of 1848, and in a series of essays and philosophical dialogues published between 1848 and 1852 he described his initial hopes and attempts to explain why all over Europe, the revolutionary movement had proved to be such a grotesque failure. Herzen soon came to believe that the Russian peasant commune, with its unique traditions of self-management, might serve as the basis for an authentically Russian socialism. There were two key elements in Herzen's Russian socialism. The first was a critique of capitalism that focused more on the mores and the consumption patterns of late capitalism than on the economic hardship of the period of primitive accumulation. Herzen was opposed to capitalism not only because it produced poverty and exploitation in its early stages but also because he believed it degraded people with its crass material values and its mass culture. Much of Herzen's social criticism was in fact an attempt to characterize the culture of capitalism and the links between the dominant values, tastes, and mores of bourgeois society and an economic system founded on the free market and on respect for the rights of poverty-owners to do whatever they wished with goods or land or resources in their possession - no matter how fragile these resources might be. The second central element in Herzen's Russian socialism was the idea that the pesant commune contained in itself the basis of a new and higher social form." (Klosko, the Oxford Handbook of the History of Political Philosophy, P. 383). The work has led to Herzen being called a "gentry revolutionary". Herzen viewed the gentry as a progressive class. The revolution he envisioned was for the people but not necessarily by them. Also, his socialism was a national destiny rather than a class one."Alexander Herzen (1812 -1870) was a prominent nineteenth-century Russian social thinker and 'father of Russian socialism'. Early in his intellectual development, Herzen was influenced by German idealist thinkers such as Schiller and Schelling. He believed in the autonomy and dignity of the individual and opposed forces, such as family and state, that oppressed the individual. Later, under the influence of French socialist thinkers such as Charles Fourier, Herzen's thought became more radical. Herzen projected his earlier concern for the oppressed individual onto society at large and he became a supporter of socialism. The socialism he envisioned was a loose federation of self-governing communes. Only in such a system could the ideal society be achieved - according to Herzen that society would be a free association of individuals which provided for the full flowering of each personality. Herzen initially placed his hopes for this future order in the European socialist movement. After the failure of the 1848 revolutions to achieve socialist principles, however, Herzen became disillusioned about European prospects and turned his attention to Russia. Herzen argued that socialist transformation would actually come first to Russia because communal institutions such as the peasant commune survived and bourgeois attitudes hadn't yet emerged. This sense of the advantages of Russian 'backwardness' was influential among the Populists in the 1870s. " (Herzen, Selected Philosophical Works).Herzen's concern for the poor and unprivileged drives him to ask the question: who is to blame for their troubles? He goes on extending the question to include every character in the novel. The scope of the title includes all the characters and their specific predicaments. The novel examines their fates individually and not collectively, which emphasizes Herzen's focus on the individual. "Who is to Blame?" was initially published in the journal "Otechestvennye Zapiski" (1845-1846), with some cuts by the censor. It was, however, not published in its complete form until the present publication in 1847

        The Gardeners' Chronicle for 1843;

      FONT>The Gardeners' Chronicle for 1847., 1843 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two handsome annual volumes of The Gardener's Chronicle. Consisting of each issue from the years 1843 and 1847, with January 28thtoDecember 30th, and January 2nd to December 25th, offered respectively. The Gardeners' Chronicle was a British horticulture periodical. It lasted as a title in its own right for nearly 150 years and is still extant as part of the magazine Horticulture Week. Founded in 1841 by the horticulturists Joseph Paxton, Charles Wentworth Dilke, John Lindley and William Bradbury it originally took the form of a traditional newspaper, with both national and foreign news, but also with vast amounts of material sent in by gardeners and scientists, covering every conceivable aspect of gardening. It may be found in this original newspaperformat here, with each issue seemingly bound in after being read - evidenced by newsagents' stamps to the rear of some pages and uneven distribution of handling marks throughout the volumes. The year 1843 also contains the unusual addition of a July 1844issue of The Railway Record, bound in at the rear, alongside a January edition ofThe Gardener's Chronicle from 1844. Both volumes feature many interesting and detailed diagrams alongside some of the many adverts for which the publication was famed. Scarce. Condition: In ornate half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with some light wear and bumping to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Largely bright and clean with some spotting, creasing or handling marks sometimes evident to title page of individual issues, and just the occasional spot or mark elsewhere. Overall: VERY GOOD..

An important work by the founder of New York's Oneida Community - one of the most prominent of many utopian communities of the nineteenth century - published the year before it was founded. Herein Noyes discusses Perfectionism, the philosophy upon which the Oneida Community was designed. Noyes coined the term 'free love', and was the leader of a group that believed in sexual freedom among consenting adults. Their community was characterized by complex marital arrangements, sharing of sexual partners, birth control, eugenics, and communal property. It inspired a number of similar communities in neighboring states, and existed for over thirty years, sustaining itself by establishing various industries, including the manufacture of silverware. Oneida Limited, a giant in the cutlery industry, had its beginnings in the commune, and still exists today.

Further, in 1832, he was elected a member of the state legislature. 1833 saw his appointment as Attorney-general, and in October that year, President Judge of the 8th Judicial district. In January, 1843, he was made president judge of the 2d district, in 1851 he was elected a justice of the State Supreme Court, and in 1854-7 was Chief Justice. This the one legalistic book published by this distinguished jurist- the 1873 first edition is quite uncommon, held by just 6 institutions [per OCLC].

        Wade & Croome's Panorama of the Hudson River from New York to Waterford, Drawn from Nature & Engraved by William Wade

      New York:: J. Disturnell, 102 Broadway between Pine and Wall Strs,. 1847.. Second edition, first issued with descriptive text. Hardcover. Very good condition. A scarce Hudson River item, a folding panoramic map of the river in 38 panels, measuring 13 feet 6 inches by 6 inches wide, with 38pp text describing the route. In 1845, New York artists William Wade and William Croome created and copyrighted a twelve-foot-long panorama illustrating in detail both shores of the Hudson River between Albany and New York City. The same year, this remarkable pictorial record, a pocket-sized fold out map, with detailed annotations & information, was published with an accompanying text. The map was issued colored for $2.00, and black & white for $1.50; this is a black & white issue.& & More detail was added to the 2nd edition - besides the addition of 38pp of text, there are many more names included on the map. In the New York City area, these additions over the first edition include the name Brooklyn; Long Island; at Governor's Island, the names South Battery & Castle William are included. Other named areas include Redhook, Buttermilk Chan., Atlantic Dock, South Ferry & East River. Fort Wood is added to Bellows Id.; Oyster Banks & New Jersey. In the Hudson Highlands area, new additions to the map include the name of Chapel of Our Lady (listed only as 'Church" on first edition); Indian Falls, and DeRham in the Garrison area.& & 12mo, original red gilt cloth over boards, title & decoration in gilt. Pamphlet a little foxed, not affecting the map. Some folds have been expertly strengthened. The relief is shown by spot heights and the map shows points of interest and miles from New York City. Boards 4 3/8 x 6 1/8". OCLC: 5563537.

        Cave at Gréve au Lançon, Jersey

      Jersey, 1847. Tinted lithograph, hand-coloured. Very good condition. Size: 47.2 x 64.1 cm. One of a series of 26 views published in 1847 to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit to Jersey, lithographed by Day & Son, lithographers to the Queen. "Amongst the many caves of this small bay, the one represented is the most striking. Before its dark, dripping entrance stands a natural obelisk of weather-stained granite, and beyond, through an arch of Nature's turning, is seen the splash of a small but beautiful waterfall, whose music, solitary as the curlew's note, adds to the wildness of the scene."

        Mansfield Park: a Novel. [Bentley's Standard Novels and Romances]. 'EVEN FEWER IN ORIGINAL CONDITION' (Gilson)

      Richard Bentley, 1847. 8vo., with an engraved frontispiece (lightly offset to title), neat contemporary inscription on (blank) title verso; publisher's original series binding of chocolate-brown coarse-grained cloth, boards blocked in blind with an elaborate decorate frame, back elaborately blocked in gilt with pseudo-Royal arms surmounting a decorative descending foliate scroll, the whole enclosing (at top) the title, (at lower centre) the series imprint and (at bottom) the price, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip expertly laid down, wanting one very small lower portion of floral pattern but with all gilt and lettering remarkably bright and clean, uncut, original advertisement endpapers preserved, a lovely copy in the very scarce publisher's original binding. With the mid-nineteenth century decorative trade ticket of J C Dollman, bookseller and stationer, of Hove, Brighton on front paste-down. A mid-nineteenth century signature (not affecting advertisement text) has been neatly inked out at head of front paste-down.Issued as No. 27 in the well-known series 'Bentley's Standard Novels [and Romances]'. The first Bentley edition appeared in 1833 (Gilson D3) with a very similar re-issue in 1837. This copy has no half-title as usual: '[after 1841] reprints up to 1854, at least of the separate issues, generally dispense with the printed half-title and the engraved title' (Gilson, p.225). The terminal publisher's advertisements present in D3 are not called for or present here.Gilson notes (p.225): 'so few of these reprints survive in libraries, and even fewer in original condition, that the following details must be incomplete (I have recorded only those reprints of which I have located copies)'. However a variety of internal and external evidence points to this being an early printing of this issue, later than Harvard I but earlier than Gilson's own copy. Important factors are the full series backstrip, the mid-period price (3s.6d. rather than 5s. or 2s.6d.), the later-state Dublin imprint and the absence of the 'Morning Herald' panegyric at end.'Copies in original cloth are becoming uncommon, particularly so those in good condition; many copies were rebound at a fairly early date' (Gilson, p.213). The present, wonderfully preserved binding is Sadleir's No. 4 style; this copy would appear to match perfectly the Forster copy (now in the V&A Museum); see Sadleir, plate 9.A SPLENDID COPY IN PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL CLOTH WITH VIRTUALLY NO TRACE OF THE USUAL OFFSETTING, FOXING OR AGE-MARKING.Gilson, D7 (specifically p.227); see also p.213, D3 (pp.218-220) and pp.225-6. .
