Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia

London: T. & W. Boone, 1847. Octavo, with seven plates including frontispiece, vignettes, 4 & 8 pp. advertisements at front (the first dated June 1848), and a further 8 pp. at rear; a handsome copy in recent tan crushed morocco by Sangorski, with the original publishers cloth and backstrip preserved (mounted on card leaves and bound at the rear). "It was at the end of September, 1844…" A beautifully bound copy of Leichhardt's famous journal, documenting one of the most unlikely and courageous expeditions of inland exploration. When Leichhardt arrived in Sydney in February 1842 he was considered learned but eccentric: he possessed no bush craft skills, had poor eyesight and was unable to shoot. Yet he proved a quick learner and launched successful forays as far north as Moreton Bay. For some years settlers had eagerly talked of finding a route from southern Queensland to the Northern Territory, so linking their abundant grazing districts with Asian markets. When a Government funded expedition stalled, Leichhardt headed his own venture funded by pastoralists and business-men impressed by the seemingly indefatigable German. What followed was one of the longest journeys of Australian inland exploration, a stupefying trek of 4,800 kilometres. The party was racked by interpersonal conflict, inexperience and continual hostility from local Aboriginal tribes (in late June 1845 one member was killed and two others seriously injured during a raid near the Gulf of Carpentaria). After fourteen months they finally reached Port Essington in the Northern Territory in a state of exhaustion. When Leichhardt and his men returned to Sydney they had been given up as lost. Celebrations lasted for months and he was hailed 'the prince of explorers' and received a sizeable sum raised by public subscription. His scientific and geographic work was greatly admired during his lifetime, but his reputation as an expeditionary leader has been criticised since. Leichhardt's mercurial temperament and mysterious death during a later expedition have become part of the mythology of European Australia. From the Collection of Robert Edwards.

Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia , from Moreton Bay to Port Essington

London: T. & W. Boone, 1847. Octavo, seven plates including frontispiece, further vignettes, with three maps mounted on linen in uniform folding case; fine in original publisher's cloth, lovingly preserved in a handsome gilt blue morocco solander case. Leichhardt complete with maps and in original condition. An excellent copy of the first edition of this great monument in the history of Australian exploration, here complete with the portfolio of maps in its original cloth binding. Leichhardt's Journal of an Overland Expedition documents one of the most unlikely and courageous ventures ever undertaken in the history of the continent. What followed was one of the longest journeys of Australian inland exploration - a trek of stupefying distance, difficulty and endurance spanning 4800 kilometres. The party was racked by interpersonal conflict, inexperience and continual hostility from local Aboriginal tribes (in late June 1845 one member was killed and two others seriously injured during a raid near the Gulf of Carpentaria). After fourteen months they finally reached Port Essington in the Northern Territory in a state of perilous exhaustion. When Leichhardt and his men returned to Sydney they had been given up as lost.       Jenni, Sohn, Bern 1847 - 8vo. 44 S. Brosch. "Ich habe kein Asyl in der Schweiz gesucht um den Preis der Erniedrigung, als stummes Opfer roher Verfolgungssucht mich unter die Füße von - "Republikanern" treten zu lassen.         A Voyage of Discovery and Research in the Southern and Antarctic Regions, during the Years 1839-43

London: John Murray, 1847. Octavo, two volumes, with a total of eight lithographic plates (including frontispieces), eight maps (three folding),m, and chapter titles with attractive steel-engraved vignettes after sketches by Hooker, manuscript dedication to front free endpaper of volume I; spines browned and showing some wear (rebacked retaining original gilt lettered cloth), water-stain affects frontispiece of first volume otherwise very good. Inscribed by Ross to George Peacock, Dean of Ely. First edition inscribed and signed by Captain Ross to the Reverend George Peacock, Dean of Ely. Peacock was a mathematics tutor at Cambridge, a friend and colleague of John Herschel and Charles Babbage, and had been influential in having a young Charles Darwin appointed to the Beagle. During his expedition Ross named a particularly high peak in the Admiralty Range at the head of the Kelly Glacier in honour of Peacock. Ross's account of his two voyages in the Erebus and Terror is 'one of the most important works in the history of Antarctic exploration' (Hill). In the course of the expedition Ross reached the highest latitude yet attained, determined the position of the Magnetic Pole and travelled within 160 miles of it. Ross was accompanied by the eminent botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker who contributed significantly to the study of Australian flora and later became a loyal friend of Charles Darwin; Hooker contributed many illustrations to the present volume. Of special interest is a large and dramatic folding lithograph of the Antarctic ice shelf, executed with a sense of scale dwarfing the vessels Erebus and Terror. This wonderful plate is followed by a large and finely engraved folding chart of the ice shelf marked with the surveys of Ross' expedition and the United States Exploring expedition under Captain Wilkes. The Antarctic bibliographer Michael Rosove notes that the publisher, John Murray, continued to issue the first edition for many years with the advertisements at the rear of the second volume updated as further copies were sent for binding and distribution to booksellers. The advertisements for this set are dated January 1847, indicating its earliest issue.

Intersticies & intersections, or, an autodidact comprehends a cube

New York: Russell Maret, 2014. <p>Maret, Russell. Interstices & intersections or, an autodidact comprehends a cube. Thirteen Euclidean propositions. Translated by Thomas Little Heath with commentary by Russell Maret. [pagination etc., accordion-folded.] New York: Russell Maret, 2014. [size; binding by Daniel Kelm] One of 71 numbered copies printed by Maret on a special making of Zerkall paper. Preserved in a clamshell box. Prospectus included. </p><p>A Letterpress Color Printing Tour de Force based on Euclid&#146;s Elements, designed by Russell Maret and set in type designed by him, and with X [need numbers] beautiful color illustrations by Maret derived from Euclidean diagrams, each one requiring from ten to fourteen or more impressions to produce. Maret&#146;s book has been compared Oliver Byrne&#146;s The First Six Books of the Elements of Euclid (1847), but it is vastly superior in its design and execution, and includes color images that it is unlikely that any other letterpress printer could achieve. Maret described his design process for this work as follows: </p><p>"I am beginning the project by reading and drawing proofs for all the propositions in Euclid&#146;s thirteen books [of the Elements]. In the process, certain propositions stand out as having a particular interest or relevance: they spark associations in literature, letter forms, or life experience (or all three). I then develop visual ideas, write sections of text, and read books that might inspire or relate to the proposition at hand. Eventually, I will choose one proposition from each of the thirteen books and pair them with accompanying textual and visual commentaries of my own. For the illustrations, I am first painting them in pencil, ink, watercolor, and/or acrylic. Once I am satisfied with an illustration, I redraw it in separations to prepare it for printing. For the translation from painting to print to work, most of the spreads I have designed so far involve between ten and fourteen press runs each. The text of the book will be set in my proprietary type family, Gremolata & Cancellaresca Milanese, and printed from photo-polymer plates. The binding will be executed by Daniel Kelm" (Prospectus). </p><p>Russell Maret is a fine printer and type designer working in New York City. He began printing in San Francisco as a teenager before apprenticing with Peter Koch in Berkeley and Firefly Press in Somerville, Massachusetts. He set up his own press at the Center for Book Arts, New York in 1993 and has been printing and publishing ever since. In 1996 Russell began teaching himself how to design typefaces, which led to a twelve-year study of letter forms before he completed his first typeface in 2008. The next year Russell was awarded the Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome. In 2011, he began working with the Dale Guild Type Foundry to convert some of his designs into new metal typefaces. </p>

        Manuscript medical ledger,

Dover, OH, 1847-54. Dover, OH, 1847-54. <p>[Slingluff, Joseph(?)]. Manuscript medical ledger. Ca. 450pp., the first 137 with manuscript page numbers. Dover, Ohio, September 1847 - August 1854. 385 x 160 mm. Original reverse calf stamped in black, worn and rubbed. One leaf (pp. 46-47) torn out, light soiling and toning, upper portion of front flyleaf cut away but a very good example. Several manuscript sheets with text and figures laid in.</p><p>The manuscript ledger of an extremely active physician and landowner in Dover, Ohio, most likely Dr. Joseph Slingluff, who began his medical practice at Dover in 1828 and served as the town&#39;s first mayor when it was incorporated in 1842. Slingluff belonged to one of Dover&#39;s founding families: The initial settlement land (2175 acres) was purchased from Col. James Morrison of Kentucky in 1806 by Jesse Slingluff and his brother-in-law Christian Deardorff. The Deardorff and Slingluff names feature prominently in our ledger. Dover&#39;s prosperity increased dramatically with the building of the Erie Canal, as the canal&#39;s only tolling station was located there; the population grew from 46 in 1820 to nearly 600 in 1840, and the town became a flour mill and warehouse center. This prosperity is reflected in Dr. Slingluff&#39;s ledger, which records that he often saw more than 10 patients a day; the ledger also contains records of real estate owned by the doctor (including a small plat map) and the construction costs of his house. At the back are two pages recording difficult obstetric cases. Mansfield, The History of Tuscarawas County, Ohio (1884), p. 543 and passim. </p>

Kapelle auf dem Alten Friedhof in Karlsruhe, 1847

THE PUBLIC MEN OF THE REVOLUTION: INCLUDING EVENTS FROM THE PEACE OF 1783 TO THE PEACE OF 1815. IN A SERIES OF LETTERS

Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1847. Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1847. First Edition. Hardcover. Some chipping to the head of the spine. Near Fine. Original blindstamped brown cloth. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author. First published in 1834, this is an enlarged edition with a biographical sketch of the author by his son. Howes S-1130; Sabin 93559: "An attack on Thomas Jefferson and a defense of the Federalist party." Franklin Delano Roosevelt&#39;s copy with his bold SIGNATURE "Franklin D. Roosevelt/Hyde Park" on the front endpaper along with the notation "Very fine copy." Roosevelt was sympathetic toward Jefferson, identifying with him as a leader who brought the government back into the hands of the people and who fashioned a government that served the best interests of the people rather than the interests of the privileged. On the pastedown opposite Roosevelt&#39;s signature is a pencil inscription by the former owner, A. Boyd Hamilton, State Printer of Pennsylvania in the mid-nineteenth century, dated 1887 presenting the book to his son. Hamilton&#39;s signature dated 1847 is also on the title page in ink. A fine example of a book from FDR&#39;s library with distinctly American content including much on George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Bound in leather-backed marbled boards, scuffed, hole at top of spine, otherwise sound. 13" x 8 Capt. Blaisdell is the more literate and descriptive log-keeper, noting not only weather, wind, and sea conditions, but also which sails were used when. We read of cargo-loading and -unloading, pilots boarding, activities of the crew and the few passengers, &c. Nason&#39;s hand is legible, but sometimes difficult. ~ The bark "Abbot Lord" has sprung leaks previously on an 1846 voyage, according to documents at Mystic Seaport Museum. By the start of this log, her troubles are far from over: numerous gales, bad leaks, stowaways, problems with cargo and provisions, desertions of many crewmen, and three shipboard deaths, all are recorded. Here are just a few of the quotable passages. On the first day out, "...two lads made their appearance that had stowed themselves away. An Irish fishing boat coming alongside put them aboard...." "...child was born to Patrick Welch...sex female...." "...died this day Mary Conland, aged 40...." "...came to anchor at Deer Island," then lay in quarantine. "...leaking badly, the pumps constantly attended to...shiping mutch water...." "...found stowed in the cargo one boy...found below, stowed away...three boys...." "...gale again, cabin filled with water...sea wet the provisions...distroyed...everything adrift...." "...men came aft saying they could not stand to Pump being wore out...." "...came to anchor in the port of Corck...survey recommended Discharging the cargo...towed to Passage [Passage West, a port town in County Cork]...two men absent...." During the next few days, five more men go "absent," including the cook. After extensive repairs at Passage, during which lumpers unload and reload the cargo, the Bark sails toward Boston, encountering heavy gales, putting in at Falmouth for five days, &c. Six more men desert ship, &c., &c. It is worth noting that in 1845, the brave ship "Abbot Lord" had carried some 175 starving immigrants from Bremen to New Orleans, where they sought to settle amid peace and plenty.

Very rare edition complete with the Rufus Sage map. Considered by Howes and other authorities the "best edition" because of its inclusion of Rufus B. Sage's superb map of the West, which otherwise appeared only in Sage's book of the preceding year. It is far rarer than the regular Fremont map, which it resembles in many respects. Fremont's narrative is one of the most important of western explorations, chronicling his trip over the Oregon Trail and into the Great Basin. It was published in numerous editions.         Sculpture Illustrations. With a Dissertation on Sculpture and Sculptors

ated from Copac) - London - T. Dewhurst, 1847. ated from Copac) - London - T. Dewhurst, 1847 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce Victorian work on sculpture. With a frontispiece and numerous further tissue-guarded plates. With sections on famous sculptures and their sculptors. Robert William Sievier, (17941865), engraver, sculptor, and scientist. To improve his knowledge of the figure Sievier learned to model in clay and studied anatomy under Joshua Brookes. Subsequently, around 1823, he gave up engraving in favour of sculpture. His portrait busts included those of Lord Chancellor Eldon (exh. RA, 1825), Sir Thomas Lawrence (1830; Soane Museum, London), and Prince Albert, the prince consort (1842; Royal Collection). He also executed several memorial statues, including those of the physician Edward Jenner (1825; Gloucester Cathedral) and William Harcourt, third Earl Harcourt (1832; St Michael, Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire), and a large number of church monuments. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1822 to 1844, at the British Institution from 1825 to 1831, and at the Society of British Artists from 1829 to 1843. Sievier&#39;s portraiture was characterized by a bold naturalism which sometimes tended towards exaggeration, especially in the depiction of facial expressions and fleshy forma manner in which his work is comparable to that of his contemporary Samuel Joseph. He had an eye for detailfor example, in his reliefs for monumentsgained from his training as an engraver. In the latter part of his life Sievier abandoned sculpture and devoted himself to science, being involved in rubber production and in the early development of electric telegraphy. According to Redgrave he was of an active inventive mind and distinguished also by his manners and power of conversation (Redgrave, Artists, 395). He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1841. DNBCondition: In a blindstamped cloth binding. Externally generally sound although rubbed, front joint just starting. Institutional label to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Bright with light scattered foxing. Library label to front free-endpaper, ink stamps and annotations to frontis, title, and within.
