The American Flora, or History of Plants and Wild Flowers; Containing a Systematic and general Description, Natural History, Chemical and Medical Properties of Over Six Thousand Plants, Accompanied with a Circumstantial Detail of the Medicinal Effects, and of the Diseases in Which They Have Been Most Successfully Employed. Attractive full red morocco gilt & 48 hand-colored plates.

New York: Strong and Burdick, nd 1846 - Vol 1 only (though no volume number(s) indicated anywhere), crown 4to (10” x 7½”), pp. (i –ii), 3, iv, 5-134 (of 137), (i), ii-iv index, hand-colored lithograph frontispiece, hand-colored lithograph extra title, 46 hand colored lithograph plates (with total of 68 images). The title page says “illustrated with sixty-six beautiful engravings”. The author was famously motivated by marketing considerations & thus counted each image on the plates as ‘engravings’. This copy has 48 plates including the hand colored frontispiece & the extra hand colored title. 22 of the 46 plates carry double engravings for a total of 68 ‘engravings’ (or 70 if you count the frontispiece & extra title). The text ends with p. 134 (of 137) but the index refers only up to p. 135 for ‘High Blackberry’, apparently lacking or never included, & has 4 pp. index following. Bennett, p. 103, notes “The first volume of the first 1846 edition calmly announces ‘6000 colored engraving by the author. The one volume actually has 50---including frontis and decorative title’. Bennett lists the 4 vols edition as 1848-50 ‘.with 240 hand colored plates.’ & mentions later editions through 1853. Nissen 1905 lists the 4vols edition as 1846-50 with one portrait & ‘195 lith’. There seem to be many anomalies with respect both numbers of plates and pages in the various issues of the editions from the several publishers form 1846 to 1853. There are two (2) trimmed hand colored botanical plates (with a small perforation & a tear) from another unrelated source laid in. Attractive later full red morocco in fine condition, back in six compartments, gilt lettered in the second, gilt center ornaments in the rest, all edges gilt. Sheets & 48 plates mostly very good with age toning, some minor stains & marginal imperfections, a few with light foxing. Two small erasures on the title page. H7510 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A previously unrecorded daguerreotype portrait.

[New York: John Plumbe,, July 1846]. First generation daguerreotype, sixth-plate size (3 x 2½ ins; 70 × 58 mm), original paper seals intact (upper portion of the plate slightly cropped), with a brass preserver, housed in the original black sand-grain leather-covered wooden case, the inner edges with a gilt decorative roll, the cover lined with red velvet stamped with a floral design, two hooks and catches. Double elliptical brass mat and glass expertly supplied by Northeast Document Conservation Center. Case a little rubbed, slight oxidization along edges of plate, as is common with daguerreotypes; very good. Before what would prove to be her final departure for Europe, Margaret Fuller's fame was such that she was contacted by the famous New York daguerreotype artist John Plumbe. "Mr. Plumbe has sent to ask me if I would let him take a daguerreotype of me for his gallery", she wrote to her brother Richard on 4 July 1846, "& I should try for those for you & Eugene [their brother] at the same time". This daguerreotype was taken at that session. Until now, only three daguerreotypes of Margaret Fuller have been identified, all in institutions. The daguerreotype at Harvard (in the collection Images of the Channing, Fuller, and Loring Families, c.1850–87 (MS Am 2593); Houghton Library, Harvard University) is the only other recorded daguerreotype from the July 1846 sitting. The Harvard image, which came to the university through the Fuller family, shows Fuller facing right, as in the present daguerreotype. The Harvard catalogue dates the image "before 1850", but as Fuller sailed for Europe on 1 August 1846, it must date to July 1846. Another image, sometimes misleadingly described as "the only photographic image" of Fuller, survives in two examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. These are in fact second-generation copies that the Boston firm Southworth & Hawes made in 1855 for the posthumous edition of Margaret Fuller's writings that her brother Richard edited and published. The Met and MFA copies are quarter-plate size and show Fuller facing left, but are otherwise identical to the original 1846 daguerreotype now at Harvard. The reversed image is indicative that they are secondary daguerreotypes. The present, previously unrecorded daguerreotype is similar to the Harvard example, but the pose is subtly different: Fuller's shawl is wrapped tighter around her, her head is inclined closer to the book, and much of her right hand is visible. The present example then is evidently a distinct original daguerreotype taking at the 1846 sitting, in sixth-plate format. The daguerreotype is housed in its original case showing two dateable features. The case is leather-covered wood, typical of early daguerreotypes, rather than the thermoplastic "union cases" produced from about 1855 to 1865. The preserver – a brass frame that wraps the glass, mat, and image – was first used around 1847, so this is an early example. Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was the first American to write a book on women's equality, and the first woman to be allowed access to the library at Harvard. She was the first woman journalist at the New York Tribune and the first full-time book reviewer in American journalism. Reporting from Rome during the First Italian War of Independence, she was the first female foreign war correspondent and the first to serve under combat conditions. She was the first female literary critic whose work was important enough to set the literary standards of her time. She was an outspoken advocate of women's rights, education, prison reform, the abolition of slavery, and a model for female leadership and innovative thinking. This daguerreotype captures her at the height of her fame and influence. Having served as the first editor of the Transcendentalist journal The Dial from 1840 to 1842, she continued as a contributor to it, publishing her essay "The Great Lawsuit: Man versus Men, Woman versus Women" in the magazine in 1843, in which she called for women's equality. When The Dial ceased publication in 1844, Fuller travelled west which resulted in her book Summer on the Lakes. Impressed, Horace Greeley invited her to join his New York Tribune as a book editor. Her second and most famous work, Women in the Nineteenth Century, was published in 1845, an elaboration and continuation of her earlier essay in The Dial. It is considered the first major feminist work in the United States and remains a classic text of feminist thought. In August 1846 Fuller became a foreign correspondent, leaving New York for England and France, and settling in Rome the following year.

Imprimerie de Léon Boitel, Lyon 1846 - [3] 173 pp. + [1 blank, 1 table de matières], ex- libris stamp of Albert Breittmayer on title page, scattered foxing, boards rubbed, otherwise copy in good condition. First and only edition of this splendid work. Brunet states that only 200 copies were printed. He is the cousin of the painter Paul Chenavard (1807-1895), and was a student of Durand and Barthélémy Vignon at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. He was admitted to the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1809. He was one of the founding members of the Société académique d’architecture de Lyon. He served as chief architect of the Rhône department in 1818-1850, and taught at the School of Fine Arts of Our Lady in Lyon from 1823 to 1861. He made several trips to Italy and Greece between 1843 and 1844 and was named correspondent of the Institute in 1855. Chenavard had intended to produce this work in parts of 40 livraisons with 4 plates in each, which would have resulted in 160 plates. Half the numbers actually appeared, after drawings by both Chevanard and Rey. Plates 28b and 48b are not in the list of plates but were added afterwards. A leaf of text accompanies plate 28b (Statue votive a Épidaure); there appears to be no leaf of text for 48b which contains details of the wall surrounding Odysseus’s palace in Ithaca. "The Voyage en Grèce" (1858) is sometimes referred to as the 'atlas' to the second edition of the 'Relation' which appeared in 1849 under a similar title. It is in fact an independent publication, which contains a summary account of the journey made by Chenavard, Rey and Dalgabio in 1843-44, and is of great importance for the many views it contains of Athens, Delphi and Ithaca. A few plates of Egypt are also included. Bibliographic references: Blackmer 334; Atabey 229. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Brunet I, col. 611, IV, cols. 1254-1255; Graesse I, p. 276, VI/1, p. 96; Sinkankas 1846, 1847. Two works giving an extensive description and illustration of the remarkable collection of engraved gems of Johann Martin Ebermeyer (1664-1743), with engraved pictures and scenes from classical mythology, literature, and history. The engravings in text "are exquisitely engraved. The richness of detail suggests that much of it was supplied by the artist & engraver to make more impressive what may have been a rather plain gem. Above each of the enlarged depictions appears a plain, or sometimes elaborately, jeweled mount in which the gem was set; these appear to be actual size..." (Sinkankas). According to Furtwängler (cited by Sinkankas), the gems were produced by the Nuremberg gemcutter Christoph Dorsch, and the collection was later sold to the King of Portugal. With two small bookplates. Waterstain in outer margin towards end. Lower row of medallions on table XI (opposite page 140) in volume 2 is left empty and lacking the portrait. A good copy.

1846. With Vignette Illustrations on Wood by Samuel Palmer. London: Published for the Author by Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated preliminary ads plus 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth. First Edition of Dickens's account of his 1844 tour of Italy.~His description of the coaching trips which took him from place to place for five months is full of wonderful observations of his fellow-men... His account of a public execution in Rome is remarkable -- his emotional reaction is held firmly in control but revulsion at the whole proceeding is implicit in every line. [CGEL]~Smith cites bindings both of fine-diaper cloth and of horizontally-ribbed cloth (no priority -- see his Note 3); there are also copies in vertically-ribbed cloth -- and this is such a copy. Condition is remarkably fine and bright -- essentially no wear other than a mildly-bumped fore-corner, the original endpapers present and uncracked, no foxing on the leaves within. PICTURES FROM ITALY is not a particularly scarce book, but fine copies such as this have become quite scarce. Smith II pp 44-58. Housed in a full-morocco clamshell case.

Paris: Edite par W. Coquebert, n.d. [1846].. Small quarto, pp. [1-4] 1-324, engraved illustrations by Bertall, O. Penguilly and St.-Germain, ten on inserted plates, numerous others in the text, original decorated cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, marbled endpapers. First edition. Versins calls this the first detailed forecast of the future (aside perhaps from Webb's THE MUMMY, 1827) to explore the malignant repercussions of advancing technology. With its extravagant and grotesque illustrations, it makes a fitting bookend to Robida's LA VINGTIEME SIECLE (1883), steam versus electricity, to bracket the first flowering of French dystopian literature, serving as a model, despite its faults, of all the futuristic nightmares that followed, even into the twentieth century (Versins, pp. 822-824). Souvestre projects Marthe and Maurice, his observers from the present day, into the year 3000 and sets them down in Tahiti, where scantily-clad people live in a machine-ridden age. Pipes dispense not only water in homes but fire, light and fresh air. An endless roll of newsprint displays the breaking news of the hour (sound like the Internet?). The very clouds are mined for water and electricity. Infants are handed over to steam-operated feeding machines before being classified by phrenologists and assigned a purpose in life corresponding to their physiognomy. They are then moved to greenhouses where the correct degree of heat ensures the maturation of their brains. All learning is based on the memorization of mnemonic devices. Criminals are either given very lenient or very severe treatment, the latter sent to solitary confinement until they have devolved into complete stupefaction. The technology of 3000 is dominated by steam (including steam-powered shoes) and balloons. Fanciful flying machines present some of the most charming images. Versins credits the little-known Charles Nodier's 1833 compositions, HURLUBLEU and LEVIATHAN-LE-LONG as influences on Souvestre. Versins, Encyclopédie de l'Utopie, des Voyages Extraordinaires, et de la Science Fiction, pp. 822-24. Cloth worn at edges, splits to cloth along outer joints repaired, considerable foxing throughout (regrettably common to this book), a sound, good copy. (#153226)

Very light age-toning to text. About very good. This pamphlet discusses the Slidell mission to Mexico and its attempt to improve the situation between Mexico and the United States, especially as relates to Texas. The Eberstadts describe this as a basic document of the Mexican-American War, as it "was the final effort in the negotiation to preserve peace, after which war became inevitable." Indeed, herein it is stated: "The Mexican nation does not recognize the American flag on Texas soil...and shall never permit new territorial advances by the United States...." PALAU 212780.         [Collection of 52 botanical watercolour drawings, mostly signed "v.d. H."]. [Utrecht], 1878-1879, 1893. Collection of 52 drawings, containing 46 watercolour drawings on wove and laid paper (most measuring ca. 31.5 x 20), with plant name, date and signature "v.d. H." added in manuscript, 1 double-page watercolour of grasses, 4 smaller sketches in pencil, and 2 pen and in ink drawings, one showing a cross-section of a live sponge, and the other a small caricature of gentleman (Van der Harst?) standing between animated plants and flowers, smelling a flower. Contemporary portfolio, made from 2 paperboards.

For Van der Harst: NNBW I, pp. 1028-1029. Collection of well-executed botanical drawings of indigenous Dutch plants, mostly herbs, by the Utrecht botany and pharmacology teacher and skilled amateur artist, Dr. Leendert Johannes van der Harst (1846-1897). Although the manuscript itself does not name him, most of the drawings are initialed "v. d. H." and the front board of the portfolio has his ink stamp. The herbs are often accompanied by small plant details and all have some manuscript explanatory text. The names of the plants are added in Latin and other observations in Dutch. Van der Harst studied medicine and pharmacology in Middelburg then took a doctorate at the Deventer Academy to teach botony, zoology, geology and mineralogy in middle-schools. Before taking his degrees he worked in apothecaries in both cities. He found his calling as a teacher in Utrecht, first at the Rijks Hoogere Burgerschool (1869) and then at the Veterinary School (1873), where he taught botany, pharmacology and other subjects. He used his considerable artistic talent to illustrate his lectures. He was also chairman of the Utrecht chapter of the Dutch Society for Horticulture and Botany. Some faint occasional foxing, otherwise in good condition. One of the cloth ties is broken at the hinge and their external parts are faded.

        Esame teoretico pratico sulla Omiopatia

BIGEL Gerard Joseph Marie. Esame teoretico pratico sulla Omiopatia del Dottor Bigel. Traduzione dal francese fatta sull'edizione di Varsavia da Nicolò Vincenzo Laraja. Napoli, dalla Tipografia Tramater, 1846. In 8vo; pp.XVIII, 380. Firma autografa del traduttore. Fior.

There are 13 plates with mammals, ten with birds, ten fish, three herpetological plates, and 16 "zoophytes". The botany, by J. Decaisne, is not coloured, as always. Plates uncut. Volume I (1845-1847): title page, frontispiece (portrait), vi pp., half title to Première partie (sciences, arts et industrie), 342 pp., half title to Deuxième partie (revue coloniale), 128 pp; 5 maps (of which 4 larger, folding), two plates of which one hand-coloured (of 3). Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers, speckled edges; Volume II [12 issues in 10] (1847-1848), half titles to Première partie and Deuxième partie, ii, 392, 116, [ii], viii pp.; engraved portrait (to be used as frontispiece), four large, folded maps, and four plates on three sheets; Volume III [four issues in three] (1848): 148, 32 pp. Both volumes in original printed wrappers.l An expensive (originally sold for 18 Dutch florins per volume!) and now very rare periodical, complete in three volumes, of which we hold the first two and parts 1-3 of the third. The purpose of this important work was to disseminate better knowledge of the Dutch Colonies (mainly on Indonesia) internationally, for which reason it was published in French. Each volume contains many interesting historical, biographical and scientific contributions by such authors as the ichthyologist P. Bleeker, the explorer and geologist Junghuhn, the medical doctor orientalist and Japanologist Von Siebold himself, the zoologist S. Müller, the geographer Melvill de Carnbee, etc. For example: S. Müller, "Notice sur quelques points de la Nouvelle-Guinée"; Bleeker, "Notice sur la topographie physico-médicale de Batavia: Végétation et faune"; Siebold, "Essai historique, statistique et politique sur le commerce du Japon"; and, by le Baron P. Melvill de Carnbee, the fine large, double-folded and tinted "Carte générale des possessions Néerlandaises aux Indes- Orientales, accompagnée de tableaux indiquant la latitude et la longitude des principaux points", which shows that two sultanates on Sumatra were still independent, and a second, large folding chart showing the principal mountains (often volcanoes) of Sumatra, Java, Celebes (Sulawesi), Borneo (Kalimantan), etc. Of special interest is the coloured plate of Javanese fruits, meant to be an advert for an extremely rare elephant folio publication on such by J. Schnell. The third volume has some large papers on fish, by Bleeker. Von Siebold was editor of the first volume only. The first volume is in a nice, contemporary binding; the second is in original printed wrappers, as issued. One plate with a view at Neira (Moluccas) is lacking. A few wrappers with some fraying and chipping, but mostly very good. Some light foxing and toning, but nearly all pages, maps and plates clean. A very good set. Sabin, 49982.
