Supplement to the New South Wales Government Gazette, of Friday, December 4, 1846

Sydney: W. W. Davies, 1846. Folio, 6 pp. (numbered [1527]-1532); disbound, pierced by early stitching, very good. A rare "Supplement" to the Government Gazette, printing detailed news of the explorations of Sir Thomas Mitchell. These supplements were not always kept with the same rigour as the Gazette proper, and are thus rare survivors.'In December 1845 Mitchell began his fourth expedition north-west from Boree in search for an overland route to Port Essington. By June 1846 he had established a depot on the Maranoa and for nearly four months explored around the headwaters of the Maranoa, Warrego and Belyando Rivers, still hopeful of finding a great river flowing north-west. On 25 September, near Isisford on the Barcoo, which he called the Victoria, when short of supplies and threatened by Aboriginals, he turned back, but only after his observations and his hopes had deluded him that he had at last found his great river to the northward' (ADB).This Supplement prints two substantial letters by Mitchell relating to this expedition. The first is dated from the head of the River Salvator, 9 September 1846. Conditions have been difficult, he writes, and the intense heat has stricken most of his men with opthalmia and killed his kangaroo-dogs. Despite this, they have been very kindly received by the local Aboriginal tribes, who have also greatly assisted in picking their route through the terrain. He and Kennedy have been assiduous in both their descriptions and survey of the land, even remembering to number each of his camps in Roman Numerals as he continued. 'We have had no collision with the Aborigines, although parties of them on different occasions visited my party at the camp during my absence, very significantly declared, brandishing their spears of clubs, that the country was their's, and making signs to my men to quit it and follow me.'The second is date on the River Balonne, 9 November 1846, and Mitchell is delighted to report that his most recent push north-west has resulted in the opening of fine land. He is also pleased to learn that Kennedy's investigations with the local tribes have helped them understand the path of some of the rivers.

Adventures of Oliver Twist Or, The Parish Boy's Progress

London Bradbury and Evans 1846 - Exceptionally Rare in Parts DICKENS, Charles. The Adventures of Oliver Twist: or, The Parish Boy’s Progress. . With Twenty-Four Illustrations on Steel, By George Cruikshank. A New Edition, Revised and Corrected. London: Published for the Author, by Bradbury and Evans, [January - October] 1846. First edition of the revised edition in ten monthly parts. Octavo. [i-v]vi-vii[viii-ix]x-xii, [1]2-311[312]. The twenty-four plates are those used for the original Bentley edition, re-touched, re-bitten, and "enhanced" by the engraver Findlay, and with the Bentley imprints erased. Cruikshank also designed the front wrapper for the parts issue, with very attractive, well-balanced, and appealing results The set at hand collates complete. Overall, in amazingly fresh and satisfying condition: wrappers bright and clean without edge fraying; text and plates clean; edges sharp; not at all tired or worn. Some minor paper restoration but overall, a fine copy of a true prize. ".[S]ets of the ten parts can, without exaggeration, be described as of the utmost rarity, whether in fine, moderate, or poor condition, and only exceeded by the 'high-spots' of Pickwick and the Sketches. As recently as 1931, it would have been an impossibility to purchase any kind of conditioned copy in the London book-market; for the simple reason that none were [sic] on offer or could be offered. The very scarcity alone, of the book in parts, gives added zest to the tracking down of copies, but many would-be owners are doomed to disappointment in their efforts to effect a capture, in face of the very limited supply available." Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 215-224. HBS 67346. $40,000 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

More was very pleased with the results and spoke of an "Irish Pencil" having lent its aid to an "Irish Pen." By his treatment of illustrations and text as a unit, and the elaboration of detail, Maclise introduced into England the effects achieved by the German illustrators of the 1830s and early 1840s.         Supplement to the New South Wales Government Gazette of Tuesday, December 29, 1846

Sydney: W. W. Davies, 1846. Folio, 5 pp. (numbered [1639]-1643), a few spots; disbound, but very good. An important "Supplement" to the Government Gazette, printing the latest news of the explorations of Sir Thomas Mitchell and Samuel Augustus Perry. These supplements were not always kept with the same rigour as the Gazette proper, and are thus rare survivors. This prints a substantial letter by Mitchell, dated from a "Camp on Snodgrass Lagoon", 14 December 1846. In the letter Mitchell is sanguine about his recent discoveries in northern New England, along the rivers Barwan, Boomi, and the Gwydir. There had been flooding of the region, and Mitchell is particularly pleased to pass on his satisfaction with the portable boats he had taken along, built by Struth of Sydney. The letter also includes his approval of Kennedy, who would soon get his own expedition to Cape York, and "two old soldiers", William Graham and John Douglas.Of equal interest is the longer letter which makes the second part of this supplement, printing a long missive from Samuel Augustus Perry, Deputy Surveyor General (Mitchell, of course, was the then Surveyor General), regarding his expedition to the River Boyne. Perry's appointment in 1831 had appalled Mitchell, not one for sharing the limelight, and for many years his Deputy was left cooling his heels in Sydney. This 1846 expedition was perhaps Perry's most substantial achievement, when he accompanied Colonel George Barney on the investigation which resulted in the proposal that Port Curtis in Queensland (Gladstone) should be the centre of a new colony of North Australia.

TRAITE THEORIQUE ET PRACTIQUE DE L'IMPRESSION DES TISSUS

1846. PERSOZ, J. Traité Théorique et Practique de l'Impression des Tissues. Four text volumes. [6], lx, 569; [4], 558; [4], 458, 32 pp. of ads; [4], 560 pp. Illustrated with 429 fabric samples mounted throughout; Atlas volume with 20 plates of which three are chromo-lithographs. Text volumes: 8vo., 210 x 140 mm, bound in publisher's quarter-calf over maroon pebbled boards, spine elaborately gilt. Atlas bound in contemporary cloth bearing the arms of the Society of Writers to the Signet. Paris: Victor Masson, 1846. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. Persoz (1805-1868), a chemist and Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Strasbourg, wrote this work for the Société d'Encouragement pour l'Industrie Nationale (founded 1802) for which he won a medal, and more importantly they agreed to publish the work. The first volume describes the technical aspects of colouring and chemistry, while the following volumes include vibrant fabric samples from the principal calico printers in England, Scotland, Alsace, Switzerland, Normandy and Paris. George Seurat, the famed pointillist painter, was an early adherent of Persoz's work. Martin Kemp, in his book The Science of Art, wrote that "Persoz's brilliantly illustrated Traite attracted Seurat's attention, to the extent that the painter transcribed a section of the text." He was much taken by the Indian origins of the dyes used and the patterns created with them. Seurat regarded them in terms of the mystical and the occult rather than in the western ideas light and dark and scientific theory, although he was also well acquainted with the writings of Chevreul. This is a particularly nice set with all four hundred and twenty-nine fabric samples present, each with its own tissue guard. There is some slight soiling in the atlas, nevertheless a fine, crisp set of an important rarity in textile design and colour theory. Poggendorff II, 109. Bolton I, 732. Darmstaedter 440.

South Australia and its Mines with an Historical Sketch of the Colony under its Several Administrations, to the Period of Captain Grey's Departure

London: T. & W. Boone, 1846. Octavo, frontispiece and five plates (including map of the Rivoli Bay district bound into the text); with a large handcoloured folding map measuring 684 x 535 mm. in front sleeve; some foxing of the plates (typical of this paper stock) and a little preliminary toning, yet a handsome copy with the advertisements in original publishers gilt decorated brown cloth. Inscribed to Captain FitzRoy of the Beagle. Inscribed by the author to Captain Robert FitzRoy, commander of the Beagle and companion of Charles Darwin, who later served as governor of New Zealand. This well preserved copy is an example of the scarcer issue with a loose folding Arrowsmith map in the front sleeve.Following his controversial support of Maori land claims, FitzRoy was dismissed as governor of New Zealand in April of 1845 and returned to England later that year. Having discovered copper at Kapunda in South Australia in 1842, Francis Dutton returned to England in 1845 seeking capable men to work the deposit. Here he wrote South Australia and its Mines and had it published by Boone early the following year. It appears likely that the two men became acquainted during 1846, at which time Dutton presented this copy to FitzRoy.
