DUMAS PERE (Alexandre)
[Attributes: First Edition]

Legatura in mz.tela, con titoli e fregi in oro al dorso. Piatti marmorizzati.
Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY
First edition, one of the extremely rare copies on Hollande fort paper, the only large paper copies, of which a few are on colored paper.Contemporary half black shagreen with black paper boards, spine in five compartments with black fillets, corners a little rubbed. With an autograph inscription from Trebutien to Georges Lesnard. A little light foxing to endpapers. In his Annales de Normandie, Jean-Luc Piré gives an analysis of the importance of the collaboration between Barbey and Trebutien, devoting an entire paragraph to Dandysme to underline the importance of Trebutien's contribution to this little work, among the rarest and most sought-after by Barbey."We are familiar with the monumental correspondence Barbey maintained "monkishly" with his friend over the course of twenty-six years...The presence of Trebutien is almost constant in the Aurevillian universe. The "Sagittarius" was not far off when he wrote to his correspondent: "Your name, interwoven with mine, is as well known as my own...Whoever says d'Aurevilly, says Trebutien."Even in the very midst of Dandysme, Barbey pays homage to his publisher and friend: "I ask the thirty or forty people who will read this their leave to introduce M. Trebutien as a friend whose merit is greater than my own, and whose imagination and knowledge - often separate, but united in him - need no personal friendship to impress those who appreciate such things."The story of Dandysme, more than any other of Barbey's books, is tied to his publisher, friend, and active collaborator. Initially conceived simply as an article on Brummel, who had … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original green publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Spines lightly faded and worn, corners and edges of boards bumped. Light dampstaining to edges of plates, else quite clean internally. The folding geological map of the U.S. in the second volume traces his route. Lyell, Sir Charles (1797-1875)
NY: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First U.S. edition. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo., vi, iv-vii, 251 pp.; vi, 231 pp., (10) pp. of adverts, with a folding map and 6 plates, some folding, many hand colored. Bound in the publisher's brown cloth with the title on the spine in gilt. The folding map and one folding plate have edge wear, where the plates extended past the rest of the text block. Previous owner's 1846 signature on a front end paper. A bright copy in near fine condition. Lyell came to America in 1841, to study geology and lecture on the topic. While researching for his book, his trips into the field included Canada, Richmond, Norfolk, the Dismal Swamp, Charleston, Augusta, and west to Cincinnati. The resulting 2 volume book, with some 90 pages devoted to his travels in the South, is considered one of the most accurate of his time. Among the topics that interested him in the South were geology, soil erosion, steamboats, morality, social classes, and Southern customs and institutions. He saw slavery as a matter of race relations as well as servitude, and compares the position of the Negro in the North with those in the South. Howes L-575; Sabin 42761. [Attributes: First Edition]

HAY, D.R. (David Ramsay)
Edinburgh: Blackwood, 1845. Illustrated with 14 plates of colour samples with a total of 86 paint samples. 8vo., iv, 72, 8 pp of advertisements. 200 x 140 mm, bound dos-a-dos, an unusual but useful publisher's binding of gilt stamped ivory coloured cloth in which the text is bound to the front board, the plates to that back, so one can view the plates and read the text at the same time. Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1845. First Edition. An unusual work on the colour theory by David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866), author of numerous works on the subject and a decorator to Queen Victoria. Hay relates the harmony of colour with that of sound and proceeds with explanations on aesthetics and the nature and relation of colors and contrasting colours and his own new system of chromatic harmony. The latter is demonstrated with a series 14 examples, 13 of which consist of six different coloured samples arranged in a hexagonal pattern. The result is a strikingly modern design. Binding with a little light wear, overall a fine copy with the samples still in bright condition. Birren Collection 30. Scarce book, dedicated to David Roberts, and with the ownership signature of art historian Meyer Schapiro. Very good(+). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
