A Plan of Gilmanton, Taken from the surveys of Sanborn, Pace and Others Drawn by a scale of 200 Rods to an Inch By Joseph Gilman 1772 Copy by W. Walker, 1808 and Rev. D. Lancaster, 1845. (Gilmanton, NH / Lake Winnipesaukee/ Meredith) Issued Boston, c. 1845 by Bufford & Co. Litho. Fine and very uncommon/ likely rare mid-19th-century lithographed urban map. Captures the central NH lakeside town with a level of detail and accuracy previously unseen. Many tiny house & church picto-symbols, very clear layout of endless lots, existing roads as well as a contemplated road to Concord, new bridge, topographical features, naming of buildings, etc. Lake Winnepisiogee for Winnipesaukee. With several early manuscript annotations on the map, including a note that "Factory Village" was now (1926) called "New Belmont". An early work from this famous and prolific lithographic printing workshop which around this very date had Winslow Homer as an apprentice. Printed on thin bond paper, issued folding, original leaf affixed to rear of right middle panel with early manuscript dedication to Francis Cogswell Carleton. This paper is now well age-toned with small light scattered spotting and small splits at fold line intersections, and the map must be handled with care. Old inexpert tear repair at right middle edge panel which is relatively easy to forgive visually given the overall slightly wrinkled state of preservation. Several early hand annotations by a local resident with family members living in areas covered by the plan. Rare in any condition. Original fold lines as issued. Mayer, Julius Robert
Heilbronn C Drechsel, 1845. 1 Bl., 112 Seiten, 1 Bl. Späterer Halblederband. Seltene erste Ausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

JERROLD, Douglas William) LEECH, John.
20 India proofs, 12.5 x 18 cm, each mounted in thick grey board, 20.5 x 25 cm, loosely housed in scarlet cloth folder & matching morocco slip-case, titled on spine ?Etchings to ?Douglas Jerrold?s Shilling Magazine? 1845-47? Armorial bookplate of Herman Le Roy Edgar. These high-quality etchings represent all 20 illustrations printed in the first four volumes of Jerrold?s Shilling Magazine, 1845-1847. Subsequent volumes were for some reason unillustrated. With a 41-line ALS from Leech to ?My Dear Leigh?, very probably Leech?s great friend the comic writer Percival Leigh. Dated Aug. 27, 1861, and addressed from Lowestoft, Suffolk, Leech begs his friend ?give [him]self a day or two?s holiday and us great pleasure by running down here? He tells Leigh ?it is a place you would like immensely - everything that you could desire in the way of sailing, bathing and walking about, to say nothing about a very good tap of ale .? He goes on to tempt Leigh with the prospect of a swim, informing him ?it is not necessary (except for the ladies) to go through the ceremony of engaging a bathing machine - you just [deleted] of your things and walk into the sea as you feel inclined? A nice warm letter between two lifelong friends who studied together and collaborated on several works. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[BABBAGE, Charles] SHEEPSHANKS, Rev. Richard.
London: G. Barclay, 1845-1860. First edition. Hardcover. A possibly unique collection of pamphlets, all first editions, documenting the decades-long dispute between Babbage (1791-1871) and his archenemy Sheepshanks (1794-1855), but also involving Sir James South (1785-1867) and Sir George Biddell Airy (1801-1892). "In a section [of <em>Exposition of 1851</em>] called "Intrigues of Science" Babbage accused Airy of being part of a vendetta against him and influencing government against his engines through personal allegiance to Babbage's enemies. The villain of the piece (according to Babbage) is the Reverend Richard Sheepshanks, an astronomer with an early training in law and a close friend of Airy" (Swade, p. 186). Sheepshanks replied in <em>A Letter to the Board of Visitors </em>(1854), which was re-issued in 1860 together with a thirty-seven-page addition containing correspondence by South and Sheepshanks and relevant extracts from Babbage's <em>Exposition </em>[in this copy, only the 'addition' from the 1860 issue of <em>A Letter to the Board of Visitors </em>is present, the main text being that of the 1854 first edition]. "This was one of several "piquant pamphlets" which "remain to illustrate the science of our century, and will furnish ample materials to the future collector of our literary curiosities" (De Morgan). Another dealt with the award of the 'Neptune medal;' a third, in 1845, with the affairs of the Liverpool observatory. "When asked why [Sheepshanks] allowed himself to enter into such disputes, he would reply that he was just the person for it; that he had … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOKER, Richard [1553-1600]
At the University Press, Oxford, 1845. Three volumes. Pp. [4], cxiii, 488; [ii], 610; [ii], 755. Folding genealogy and facsimile MS plates. Contemporary crimson calf bordered by double gilt fillets, elaborately gilt-panelled spine between raised bands, black morocco labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Only light wear to bindings, bookplate on pastedown of first volume, but overall an elegantly bound set in fine condition. The Third Edition of John Keble's [1792-1866] arrangement of Hooker's works, first published in 1836. It remains the standard version to this day. In addition to his great treatise, "Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity", this edition contains seven of Hooker's sermons as well as several occasional pieces. Of the eight books of the "Laws of Ecclesi astical Polity", only five appeared in Hooker's lifetime, the first four in 1594, and the fifth in 1597. The sixth and eighth books were published posthumously in 1648, and the seventh finally in 1662. The authenticity of the last three books, compiled from Hooker's manuscript notes, has been much disputed. What is not in dispute is the enormous influence of his work on subsequent religious and philosophical thought. His defense of the Elizabethan Settlement of 1559 led him to elaborate a theory of "natural law" as the expression of God's supreme reason and the foundation of all ecclesiastical and civil polity. He thus justified the laws and structures of the English Church, including royal supremacy, against both the Puritan insistence on the absoluteness of Scripture, and the Roman Catholic appeal to the immu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Langue: Français [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1845-1854, Denmark. Highly decorative box containing Biedermeier Period Album Amicorum from Denmark. The box, oblong, 8 by 15.5 cm. With four leaves containing original artwork, a fifth, with a lock of hair. One other is of a steel engraved view of Copenhagen by the water. The remainder, 26 leaves, are purely writing -- verse, autographs, etc. We would regard the most interesting of the pictorial leaves as one with a lace window onto which is attached a floral garland, above which hovers a seraph, and a ribbon containing an aphorism. This mounted part is not flat, and we would say it was probably manufactured, and thus is not itself original art. Surrounding the window is heavily gilded tracery inspired by Medieval illuminated manuscripts. Another lovely leaf is one with two angels holding aloft a beribboned crown. A third leaf has a scenic waterfront view, a fourth, a simple rose centered bouquet. The Morocco box all this is housed in is a good example of the genre. Without describing in great detail the niceties of the gilt decoration (which includes turn-ins, etc.), we mention one element: the impression of two Greek statues of Goddesses standing atop pedestals, and contained in side panels. One of the four silk covered flaps within the box -- the flaps used to secure the leaves beneath -- is hanging on by a thread. Otherwise, light to moderate wear, with no salient issues to speak of.

Blunt facts display the ferocity of emotions and simmering violence provide snippets like 'Palmer said to deponent that . . . he would put one of those dirk knives into him' abound throughout the testimonies. The depositions paint a picture of unbridled upset on the ship: lawlessless, violence, suspicions of poisoning, desertion, and a final critical comment from nature itself: a calamitous lightning strike makes for a final exclamation point to the awful whaling voyage. The vessel at the center of the events described herein, the Alto, was built in Tiverton, Rhode Island [we note that research indicates the Alto was in fact the only such vessel ever built at Tiverton] in 1826 and was lost near the Falkland Islands in 1870. The National Maritime Digital Library date the events related in the documents occurred during the Alto's fourth voyage, under the direction of Captain Nehemiah West (whose deposition is included), and which lasted from September 1844 to April 1847. [A successful voyage commercially as the records further note that the Alt … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peters, John R.
Boston: Eastburn's Press, 1845. 8vo, pp. 152; original green paper wrappers neatly rebacked, edges lightly spotted; contemporary owner's signature on front wrapper, very good. A case by case description of the contents of the museum's exhibit. Most of the descriptions are detailed, and diverge into long comments about Chinese society and culture. The museum showed "41 cases displaying approximately 800 objects related to Chinese fine arts, agriculture, costume, and other customs," but did not survive for more than 2 years before becoming insolvent, with the collection moving to Philadelphia, possibly to join the collection already established there by Nathaniel Dunn.

Plu … [Click Below for Full Description]
