[Palmyra, Mo., 1845. Broadside, 8 x 11 1/4 inches. Oblong quarto. Two cmall chips and a one-inch closed tear at left edge. Manuscript annotation at lower edge. Faint foxing and dust soiling. About very good. An unrecorded Missouri broadside from 1845, advertising a public land sale near Palmyra, Mo. The land in question is located in Round Grove Township, Marion Co., in the northeast corner of Missouri. The land forms a contiguous lot from several different parcels, and includes frontage on the South Fabius River. The seller, Samuel Henderson, by whom the advertisement is signed in print, is recorded as a resident of Round Grove in the 1840 census and is later noted as a teacher at the first area school in 1842. Jacob Riter, at whose house the prospective sale was to be held, is recorded as a local farmer in the same census. This area was sparsely settled in 1845, and the only printing done in the county was at Palmyra. One of those printers, Joseph Ament, took on a young Samuel Clemens as his apprentice when he moved his press to Hannibal, Mo., in 1848. Not in Missouri Imprints or OCLC.

VAILLANT, Auguste Nicolas.
Paris Bertrand -52, 1845. First edition. 4 volumes comprising three 8vo text volumes and one folio (50 x 34 cm) atlas volume, 100 fine lithographs, light scattered foxing to atlas, some foxing and staining to text, modern red morocco gilt, an excellent set. The many beautifully lithographed plates in the atlas include views of Valparaiso, Santiago, Callao, and Quayaquil in South America; and in the Far East, views of Manila, Singapore, Calcutta, Macao, the Pearl River, Canton, and Hong Kong. There are also six fine views of the Hawaiian Islands. The main aim of this voyage was political in nature; to show the French flag in various areas in the Pacific - the Hawaiian Islands, China, and Cochin China, to extend protection to a number of French subjects, and to draw up comprehensive reports on the countries visited, including Brazil, Chile, the Marianas, and the Philippines. Although the projected voyage was to be of rather short duration, scientific interests were also considered, and members of the expedition included Joseph Eydoux, a zoologist who had previously sailed to the Pacific with La Place, and Charles Gaudichaud, a botanist who had previously travelled with Freycinet. In Hawaii Vaillant spent much time easing relations between French residents and the chiefs, particularly with respect to the expulsion of Catholic priests. This set comprises the account of the voyage along with the album of views. Subsequent to the publication of this narrative, various scientific reports arising from the voyage were published over a number of years up to 1866. These reports are "v … [Click Below for Full Description]

DU MONCEL, Theodose.
Paris Chez De La Rue circa 1845 - First edition. Landscape folio (44 x 64.4 cm), 24pp, 9pp, 2 lithograph title pages (1 foxed), map of Greece, 51 lithographed plates (2 folding), after sketches by the author, original upper wrapper bound-in, modern calf-backed marbled boards, a fine clean copy. A rare work containing fine views of Venice, Corfu, Athens, Corinth, Constantinople, Malta, and elsewhere. Du Moncel (1821-1884) studied at the collège of Caen and at the age of eighteen published two works on perspective. After graduation he travelled in Greece and Turkey from November 1843 to the spring of 1844 spawning a number of publications, often with overlapping contents: Athenes monumentale et pittoresque [sometimes entitled Vues pittoresques des monuments d'Athenes] (1845 or 1846); Excursion par terre d'Athenes a Nauplie (1845), and this one. It seems that the present work, which has the most plates, was the first to appear and the others derive from it. They are all very rare. The plates in this work are of a high standard and comprise: [General title] Lepante; [sub-title] Episode de la Guerre de l'Independance; 1. Carte de Grece; 2 & 3. Venise; 4. Ancone; 5. Corfou; 6. Patras; 7. Curzola; Calamaki (2 views); 8-23. [Views in Athens, including a folding panorama]; 24. Monastere de Daphnee; 25. Eleusis; 26. Megare; 27-31 [Views in and around Corinth]; 32. Temple de Nemee et tombeau d'Agamemnon (2 views); 33. Acropole de Micenes; 34. Porte des lions; 35. Ruines de Tirynthe; 36. Vue de la plaine d'Argos; 36 bis. Antiquites d'Argos; 37. Nauplie; 38. [ZIEBER, G.B.; Publisher].
Philadelphia: G.B. Zieber and Company, 1845.. Small octavo, pp.x; 183. 2 vols in one. In the publisher's fragile, worn, green paper wraps. Some archival tape repairs to covers and a couple of pages, closed tears, browning, edges frayed; contemporary writing to upper cover, front cover has come away from spine, gatherings remain remarkably tight. Cover design wonderfully Victorian-fun-house/pseudoscientific, with a trumpet descending from a cloud, operated by disembodied arms on strings. Reads, 'Man has no right to say, this is worse than that. In time every thing shall be well approved.' Housed in an attractive gilt-titled protective cloth case. A good copy of an uncommon title; an introduction to the comprehension of moral evil, strikingly presented.

Paris, J.B. N. Krieger, Epidemiology and the people¿s health,p. 78 :"one of the world's first public health journals" ; A. La Berge, The early nineteenth century French public health movement, p. 48 ; B.P. Cf.
