[USA - PHARMACOPOEIA].
Garrison & Morton 1845. First edition of the first official pharmacopoeia of the United States. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) was founded in 1820, a few years after the proposition of Dr. Lyman Spalding in 1817. The works starts with a "historical introduction" on how the project for a national pharmacopoeia was started and wat its goals are supposed to be. The main text gives the directions for the production of medicines. On the left pages the recipes are given in Latin, on the right the English translation is given. Included at the end is an index both in Latin and English. With bookplate and owner's inscription. Binding rubbed along the extremities, rebacked. Browned, waterstaind and major foxing, especially in the second half of the books. Overall a fair copy.

Matilda Houstoun
G.B. Zeiber & Co. 1845 - Philadelphia: G.B. Zeiber & Co., 1845. First US Edition (also issued in cloth, but the paperback is usually given priority). 16mo (6" x 4.5"); xii, 13-288p. Frontis portrait of Santa Anna. Printed brown paper wraps. Front cover chipped along fore-edge and corners with a couple smaller tears to back, along with some general darkening and a small pencil notation to top front. Pencil notes inside front cover and on series title page, else pages unmarked. Opens easily to between a few gatherings, but binding is sound. Pages toned and variously foxed but unmarked. Not an ex-library copy. Jenkins writes "This sprightly account was written by a wealthy English lady who visited Texas in 1842 in her husband's private yacht" and that "her view of the Texans is surprisingly free of snobbery." Throughout the book she offers her observations on Texas, its geography and social customs, and the general temperament of Texans, describes her meeting with Commodore Moore of the Texas Navy, marvels at the architecture of Galveston while worrying that it may one day "be swept away by the overwhelming incursions of the sea," and hints at both annexation and an impending Civil War over the issue of slavery. Mercer, Charles Fenton (1778-1858)
Np. Printed for the Author, 1845. 380p. Howes M527. The author suppressed version that made his fellow Virginia landowners irate since he felt slavery was a moral evil though he never became an abolitionist. After graduating from Princeton in 1797 where he also later took a law degree he practiced law and served in the War of 1812. He agreed with Federalist principles serving in the U.S. House from 1817 to 1839. He also felt that race based on skin color was so pronounced that as the U.S. would become industrialized, the blacks would be viewed as the least desirable. For this reason, he was one of the founders of the American Colonization Society and wrote this suppressed work in 1845 that along with his having founded the Mercer Colony in Texas led the accusation that he was a rank abolitionist. After a limited distribution of the book, he had copies destroyed. Howes in USiana says this bitter attack upon the Constitution shocked both his friends and notes in 1863 in London five years after his death, an altered version appeared leaving out the most controversial areas. Bound in 1/4 red straight grained morocco over marbled paper covered boards, corners show wear, outer joints and spine cracked but not through endpapers, one signature somewhat sprung, only ocassional spots of foxing. In all a good copy.

Wallin, Georg August (Yrjö Aukusti).
1845. 8vo. VII, (1), 126 pp., final blank f. With lithogr. map at the end of the volume; printed notes of a Bedouin melody within the text. Green half calf with contemp. marbled boards and giltstamped title to rebacked spine. First edition, published posthumously. - Extremely rare account of Wallin's principal journey through Arabia, unknown to most bibliographers: "It was not until two years after his death", writes Henze, "that the report of his first (and most important) journey (performed in 1845, a year before the appearance of the first volume of Carl Ritter's 'Arabia') was published". This refers to the English "Narrative of a Journey from Cairo to Medina and Mecca", which was printed in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1854. In fact, an extensive account of the first leg of this highly significant journey was first given to the world in December 1853, but little more than a year after the author's passing. Of this Swedish-language book, edited by Berndt Otto Schauman, less than two dozen copies are known worldwide, 12 of which are in Finnish libraries (the remainder distributed throughout Sweden [4 copies], Germany [2 copies], Denmark, France, and the U.S.A. [a single copy each]). In contrast with the later JRGS publication, the present work includes an appendix rendering Arabic terms and phrases that occur throughout the text in the original language and script. - Like his more famous contemporary J. L. Burckhardt, Wallin was fluent in Arabic and, in local costume, was capable of passing for a scholarly sheikh. Indeed, the two explorers are often co … [Click Below for Full Description]

[UTOPIAN COMMUNITIES] [19th-c. BROADSIDES - UTOPIAN COMMUNITIES] GITTINGS, M.D. 19t19
Zanesville, OH: Courier Office, 1845. Auction of the remains of the Columbian Phalanx (also known as the Columbian Association), a Fourierist commune near Zanesville, Ohio which appears (not atypically) to have survived only about a year; it was one of at least thirty such Fourierist experiments launched in America in the decade of the Forties -- the first, most famous and most successful having been Brook Farm in Massachusetts. Bestor (Backwoods Utopias ) notes that the Columbian Phalanx absorbed the population of the nearby Beverley Association in 1845, though the additional population appears to have done little to make the phalanx more viable. The timing of the sale - the day after Christmas - strikes us as somewhat cruel, though perhaps the community's creditors had been holding out for a Christmas miracle. Rare; OCLC one location only (AAS); MORGAN (Ohio Imprints) 4637. Letterpress broadside, 16-1/2" x 12-1/4" (ca 42cm x 32cm). Twenty-seven lines of text in single column below headline, signed in type "M.D. Gittings" at end of text. Franked on verso. Old folds; worn through at fold-lines with brief loss to text but no loss of sense, a few small triangular losses to extremities; complete and Good.
