VERDI, Giuseppe 1813-1901
- 2 pp. Octavo. With decorative embossed blindstamp ("BATH") to upper inner left corner. An important letter regarding I Lombardi, including commentary regarding orchestration for the character of Pagano, the necessity for a large orchestra and choir, staging, the composer's plans to write operas for Naples and Venice, future performances of his works, etc. Verdi states that he has written to his publisher Ricordi about the part for Pagano "arranged for baritone with the orchestra properly adjusted." He describes the opera as his "most difficult" and states that, "in addition to the three principal artists, it also needs a ensemble of orchestra and choruses" in order that the work be properly staged. The composer goes on to say that he will write for Naples and Venice next year, and that he "will be free in two years from now, that is to say from October 1845 to March 1847" if Mr. Vatel would like to discuss the possibility of making a "deal," but Verdi would like one of his operas to be performed before then. He then states that a "Mr. Torre of Genoa" has given him a Romanza that he will set to music as soon as he has "a spare moment." In closing, Verdi thanks Escudier for his "kind words and for the care [he] takes of giving notoriety" to the composer's "poor name."Browned, especially at upper edge; small old tapemark; creased at folds and somewhat overall; small pinholes. Archivally repaired and restored. Verdi, Giuseppe, Komponist (1813-1901)
Milano, 18. XI. 1845. 8vo. 1½ pp. Bifolium with integral address panel. In Italian, to Léon Escudier, the French publisher of Giuseppe Verdi's works: "I have received almost contemporaneously your very much valued letters. Lucca has assured me that you would have the preference of the Opera of London, and that this affair shall be definitively concluded when I and Lucca in April shall pass through Paris to go to London. As to the Opera, it suffices that you sustain me. I want to advise you that in the Carnival of 1847 I must write an Opera for L. which shall be performed in Rome, thus I could not make in that period another Opera. For the present we must suspend this business, and the case wh shall speak of it when I shall be in Paris. Give me news of Ernania [.]" (transl.). - Traces of folds; small tear on f. 2. JEU]
Paris, Bussière éditeur. Lithographe Roche, rue Leregrattier, 1. Vers 1845.

SAMSON & CO. (designers)
[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience." DENTON, Daniel
William Gowans, New York, 1845. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 57pp, 16pp ads. Very good. Modern rebind is fine, while text block is lightly age toned only. The 1670 true first edition of this constituted the first publication in English on New York, while the edition offered here is the first title in the "Bibliotheca Americana" series published by this noted New York antiquarian bookseller (1803-70) -- "A New Edition with an Introduction and Copious Historical Notes by Gabriel Furman." This copy is tight and fairly bright. Of great interest are the small, lightly pencilled margin notes on quite a few pages and the eight pages with extensive pencil notes on the large bottom margin -- fascinating as their nature (correcting the most minor of typographical errors, for instance, or the insertion of detailed learned notes and modifications) often suggest they were made by someone connected with the book. Perhaps Furman or Gowans thinking of a future edition? Scarce, in any case, and an exceptionally attractive copy. HOWES 259 note. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

WELCH, MARGETSON & CO
Printed by Welch & Margetson, [c1845]., London, - Rare railway map of England and Wales printed on silk Lithographed map printed on silk, blue border, embroidered initials at upper left. A souvenir map of England and Wales, showing the railway lines rapidly spreading across the country. Although the map is undated, the ownership embroidery ("I.W.C. 45") and the progress of the lines allows a fairly accurate estimate of the date of production. The railway line from London to Exeter is completed (1844), but not the extension to Plymouth (1846); similarly, the line to Colchester is finished (1843) but not the extension to Ipswich (1846). Welch, Margetson & Co was a successful clothing manufacturer and wholesaler from 1842 to 1963. Maps printed on silk were popular contemporary accessories, with a similar silk railway map printed by William Reed. Welch and Margetson also produced a silk map of London, an example of which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. See V&A T.84-1972 for another example of the firm's work.
