Första Resa fran Cairo till Arabiska Öknen i April 1845. Fragment. Helsingfors (Helsinki), (S. Baranovskij for) J. Simelius, 1853.

1845. 8vo. VII, (1), 126 pp., final blank f. With lithogr. map at the end of the volume; printed notes of a Bedouin melody within the text. Contemp. green half calf with giltstamped spine title and marbled sides, original printed yellow wrappers bound within with wood-engraved desert illustration on back cover. First edition, published posthumously. - Extremely rare account of Wallin's principal journey through Arabia, unknown to most bibliographers: "It was not until two years after his death", writes Henze, "that the report of his first (and most important) journey (performed in 1845, a year before the appearance of the first volume of Carl Ritter's 'Arabia') was published". This refers to the English "Narrative of a Journey from Cairo to Medina and Mecca", which was printed in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1854. In fact, an extensive account of the first leg of this highly significant journey was first given to the world in December 1853, but little more than a year after the author's passing. Of this Swedish-language book, edited by Berndt Otto Schauman, less than two dozen copies are known worldwide, 12 of which are in Finnish libraries (the remainder distributed throughout Sweden [4 copies], Germany [2 copies], Denmark, France, and the U.S.A. [a single copy each]). In contrast with the later JRGS publication, the present work includes an appendix rendering Arabic terms and phrases that occur throughout the text in the original language and script. - Like his more famous contemporary J. L. Burckhardt, Wallin was fluent in Arabic and, in local costume, was capable of passing for a scholarly sheikh. Indeed, the two explorers are often compared: "I see many points of resemblance between them, the same iron constitution, the same versatility, the same indomitable energy, the same imperturbable temper" (H. C. Rawlinson, quoted in Henze). Financially backed by his alma mater, the University of Helsinki, Wallin departed for the Middle East in 1843 and set out on his expeditions from Cairo under the name of Abd al-Wali. "In 1845, proceeding southeast across the wastelands of the Nafud Desert, he reached Ha'il then continued by force of circumstances southward to Medina and Mecca. From there he returned to Egypt" (Howgego). More precisely, he "moved eastwards from Wadi al-Araba, first touching upon the upper regions of Wadi Sirhan, then on to the oasis of Djuf ('Algawf') and crossed the central regions of Shammar, via Djobbah ('Gubbi'), the Great Nefud ('Nufood'), and Hail [...] Of Shammar and its inhabitants he provided the fullest account, unsurpassed by later travellers in its scholarly precision" (Henze). After his return to Europe in 1850, Wallin was made Professor of oriental languages at Helsingfors. His notes provide a detailed overview of the political and religious movements and the role of the different tribes in Palestine and especially in Saudi Arabia. - Occasional brownstaining; binding somewhat rubbed, but a fine copy on the whole. Provenance: contemp. ownership "Bergelin" to front wrapper cover; bookplate of the journalist Kurt Bergengren (1920-85) on pastedown. K.-E. Henriksson (A Wallin Bibliography), in: Studia orientalia 17 (1952), p. 13-16, at p. 13. OCLC 551923531. Cf. Macro 2262. Howgego II (1800-50), W12, p. 627. Henze V, 452 (all citing only the 1854 JRGS publication). Cf. Fück 198 (mentioning the journey). Not in Gay or Ibrahim-Hilmy.

Autograph letter signed "G. Spontini Conte di Sant' Andrea" to Benigni Ghisilieri...

1 page of a bifolium. Quarto (ca. 260 x 217 mm). Dated Paris, June 20, 1845. In ink on dark ivory paper with integral address panel and remnants of original seal to verso of second folio. In Italian (with translation). Spontini asks Ghisilieri to convey his thanks to a certain Consul Petrini. He mentions Giovanni Paggi, a well-known Italian oboist, composer, tenor, and mutual acquaintance. "... The most accomplished Signor Paggi will tell you that he has listened to me saying constantly that I am still awaiting answers from Rome, Iesi, and Maiolati! Without this, I would not know that I am boring my friends with vague, useless and fruitless matters! I have repeatedly asked him, and would indeed ask you also, to convey my infinite thanks to the most kind Consul Petrini for the admirable offer he saw fit to make to me, of providing a friendly retreat and hospitable asylum for the many centenary festivities. I would be too afraid to accept, or be judged perhaps indiscreet or ungrateful. I am not in a position to make up my mind or to take such a decision, which no one should expect in such a state of uncertainty... " Slightly worn and soiled; creased at folds; edges trimmed with short tears and some fraying, slightly affecting several letters; minor loss to margins of second folio, corresponding to seal, not affecting text or address panel. Together with: An intriguing autograph letter signed "Ch. de Lonchamps" to Spontini. 2 pp. of a bifolium, ca. 249 x 190 mm. Dated Naples, June 7, 1810. In ink on ivory paper with integral address panel with remnants of original seal, and "Il Soprintendente Generale de' Teatri, e Spettacoli Ciambellano di S. M." printed at head. In Italian (with translation). Lonchamps attempts to lure Spontini back to his native Italy with a commission for a grand opera and an opera buffa, to be performed at the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo in Naples. He reminds Spontini that, although he may enjoy unprecedented advantages in Paris, it is only in his own country that he may see his friends and family - as well as fulfill the desire of the Queen of Naples to have him in her city. "Having received your letter, my dear Spontini, I have been reflecting on the most suitable method of repaying you for your services. In consequence, I have summoned the impresario for the Royal Theatres, for whom you might like to set some drama to music, as much for honor as for profit. In doing so, knowing the benefit that could accrue from the graciousness of your action, I have engaged him to propose to you the composition of a major serious drama for the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo, for which you will be offered, in reward, the same as has been offered in the past to the most famous composers. Following the success of this composition (of which there can be no doubt), the above-mentioned impresario will propose an opera buffa, which will also be rewarded as above. This is what I have been able to obtain for the moment. I am sure that the impresarios of the Fiorentini and Nuovo theatres will not miss the opportunity to profit from your coming to Naples, by offering in their turn projects for their theatres, which are also enjoying fame at this time... " Creased at folds and corners; occasional small ink stains and smudging, just affecting final pen stroke of greeting; minor worming to upper inner margin, affecting one letter. Spontini was one of the leading composers in Paris when Lonchamps made his proposal. It is unclear whether Spontini accepted. After Fernand Cortez (1809), Spontini seems to have produced no new operas, either in Paris or Italy, until Pélage, first performed in Paris in 1814. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory - concentrating on performances of Cimarosa and Mozart - into practice at the Théâtre Italien. In July he was awarded a newly created prize for the best opera of the decade, for La vestale, and in the same month he married Marie-Cathérine-Céleste Erard, daughter of the pianoforte maker and publisher Jean-Baptiste Erard. After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812."         The viviparous quadrupeds of North America. New York, John James Audubon, 1845-1848.

1845. 3 vols. Large folio (70 x 55 cm). With 150 striking coloured plates, all lithographed on stone, printed and coloured by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia, after drawings by John James and John Woodhouse Audubon, and the backgrounds after Victor Audubon. Each volume also with a title-page and a list of contents. Late 19th-century black morocco, with gold-tooled spine, red cloth sides and marbled endpapers. First edition of the extraordinary coloured plates of quadrupeds by the world-famous French-American naturalist and painter John James Audubon (1785-1851), whose "Birds of America" was purchased at a Christie's auction for $11.5 million in March 2000, setting a world record for the most expensive book ever sold (surpassed only by the 1640 "Psalm Bay Book", sold for $14.2 million in November 2013). The plates in the present work are considered the finest animal prints ever published in America. Unlike the "Birds", it was produced entirely in the United States, making it the "largest successful color plate book project of 19th-century America" (Reese). - After the publication of his highly acclaimed "Birds of America", Audubon settled on the Hudson River and began working on the present series to document the animal life of North America. The plates were first published in 30 parts of 5 plates each, and three separately published accompanying text volumes, written by John Bachman, appeared between 1846 and 1854. A second edition was published in 1856, but "the first edition is by far the best" (Sabin). - Title pages show some small scuff marks, a few plates with minor, unobtrusively repaired tears along the edges. Binding skillfully restored. A complete set, with most plates in fine condition. Nissen, ZBI 162. Buchanan, pp. 147-154. Reese 36. Sabin 2367. Cf. Howgego II, A19 (p. 15, 1846-54).

Travels in Luristan and Arabistan. London, J. Madden and Co., 1845.

1845. 8vo. 2 vols. XX, 404 pp. XII, 398, (2) pp. With 15 lithographed and wood engraved plates (two folding) and 2 folding engraved maps. Recent period style brown gilt tooled half calf with marbled boards and black gilt morocco labels. A very good set. First edition. - An important account of Persia with detailed descriptions of the antiquities, archaeological sites, and the ancient history of the country. In 1841, de Bode travelled from Tehran to Isfahan, Persepolis, Shiraz, Kazeroun, Shushtar, Susa, Khorramabad and back to Tehran. "Luristan" (modern "Loristan"), or the land of the Luri people, is a western province of Persia; its main city is Khorramabad. "Arabistan" (now "Khuzestan") is located in the Eastern Persia and the main city is Ahwaz. - De Bode provides a detailed account of the ancient cities of Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Ahaemenid Empire, and Susa, which used to be the capital of the legendary civilisation Elam, mentioned in the Bible. In his narrative he describes numerous archaeological sites, lists the names of settlements, describes the history of the local tribes and their manners and customs. In a supplement he published his observations on the routes of Timur and Alexander the Great, who crossed south-western Persia during their conquering marches. "It is with the view of rescuing from a second oblivion this once classical ground that the Author has endeavoured to draw aside a corner of the veil which still covers this mysterious region" (preface). One of de Bode's advisors whom he acknowledges in the preface was the renowned assyriologist Sir Henry Rawlinson (1810-95), an expert in Persian and Indian vernacular languages who explored Susiana and Persian Kurdistan and was called by Budge, in "The Rise and Progress of Assyriology" (1925), "the father of Assyriology" (ODNB). - "Clement Augustus de Bode, a member of the Russian legation in Tehran, filled some empty spaces in existing maps" (Howgego). "It is mostly a travel book [...] the author gives a good picture of tribal life and especially the political situation in Fars; principally the hostility between the Qashqai tribe which controlled Shiraz. There are also descriptions of historical sites and monuments along the way" (Ghani, p. 93). Abbey, Travel, 391. Howgego II, G2. Henze I, 281. NYPL Arabia coll. 165.

Del Caballo. Unpublished manuscript in Spanish.

Madrid 1845 - Unpublished manuscript in Spanish neatly written in ink on paper, Madrid, April (1845). Small 4to. Title leaf + 95p + (2 blank)f. Including a few corrections in the text. Offered together with the author’s autograph letter in French addressed to “Monsieur le Duc”, 3p, referring to this manuscript, dated: Madrid, 6th May 1845, signed: “le comte Charles de Ramsault, socio de la sociedad de fomento de la cria caballar de Espana”. Bound in contemporary patterned cloth boards, edges worn Presentation copy of a Spanish translation of the author’s apparently unpublished memoir on the horse for the attention of Queen Isabel II of Spain who was committed to the improvement of breeding stock for light cavalry horses. The treatise discusses the domestication of the horse and breeding methods of various countries from ancient to modern times, dwelling on the vital contribution of Arab stallions which made Spain the “stud farm of Europe”. It comprises chapters on the improvement of horses for cavalry, the breeding of mares, purification of lineage, and special considerations for the breeding of mares in Spain (“Sobre los conocimientos necesarios a todo director de yeguadas, y consideracio nes particulares referentes a Espana”). The author expresses his hope that his work will be a useful guide for young breeders to help them avoid certain errors. In the accompanying signed autograph letter addressed to “Monsieur le Duc”, identified as Francisco de Paula de Borbon (1794-1865), the Queen’s uncle, who used the title of “Duke of Cadiz”, patron of the arts, and of the Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais, Ramsault offers this manuscript for submission to the Queen at the suggestion of (Agustin de) Armendariz, Intendent of the Royal Palace. Stating his aim to be merely to contribute to the best of his ability to the improvement of horse breeding in Spain, and that his work will be submitted to the Sociedad de Fomento de la Cria Caballar, he explains that the manuscript was copied for the Duke’s private perusal and hopes that he will accept this practical manual based on 15 years research of observation and study of a subject which has been the author’s favourite pastime since his childhood, further offering to compile a detailed and comprehensive work if so desired. Ramsault adds that having married a Spaniard, he aimed to remain in Spain in order to contribute to the improvement of such an important branch of social economy; he refers to the Duke’s knowledge and experience of the subject and feels that his approbation would assure universal acceptance in Spain of this treatise. Explaining that he wrote this letter in French, as not yet entirely conversant with Spanish, although perfectly understanding the language, Ramsault points out several small translator errors in his manuscript. He describes himself as an agronomist and member of the Royal Linnean Society etc. In 1850 Ramsault became editor of El Agricultor Espanol, a prestigious periodical (later Revista Mensual de Agricultura) published with the intention of explaining the best way to improve land cultivation and cattle breeding. Queen Isabel II (1833-68) commissioned the purchase of Arab horses in the Middle East to improve the breeding stock for light cavalry horses in Europe. In 1847 the first Spanish studbook was started which remains the earliest established register of Arab horses. Both the manuscript and letter are well preserved.         Photographs of trees and shrubs in the grounds of Leny Perthshire.[Scotland], 1907. 4to (29.5 x 24.5 cm). With 50 platinum print photographs, mounted on gray cardboard, with the largest measuring ca. 15 x 30 cm, and the smallest ca. 9 x 12 cm; and a letterpress title-page and index.. All photographs protected by tissue guards. Contemporary green half morocco, gilt edges, decorated endpapers.

WorldCat (1 copy). Very rare book of photographs, showing the various trees and shrubs in the garden of Leny House, Perthshire, Scotland. The photographs show the garden change through the seasons with some pictures taken in the summer and others taken in the winter. Two photographs with an identical composition show a group of beech trees, with the summer version showing only the trees in front of green foliage. The absence of the background foliage in winter reveals a wide view of the Perthshire behind these trees, thereby making a complete new scene of the same group of trees. The plot around Leny House had been property of the Buchanan family since the Middle Ages. It is centred around a Jacobean-style mansion, the result of an extensive rebuilt in 1845-1846, which can be seen on one of the photographs. The photographs were taken by John Hamilton Buchanan (1861-1919), a banker, amateur photographer, owner of Leny House and, judging from this publication, a great lover of his garden. The publication of this volume of photographs was apparently a private project, with only two others copies located (National Library of Scotland and Polesden Lacey). Nevertheless, great care was taken in providing a prestigious photo album, with the photographs being expensive platinum prints and a letterpress title-page and index. The index provides a list of all the photographs, sometimes identifying the photographed species and/or season. With the spine slightly faded and rubbed; some foxing. An excellent copy of a very rare volume of garden photography.

Halifax: William Millner, 1845. 4 volumes. An attractive and very elusive early 19th century printing of this classic work Illustrated with 4 folding maps. 8vo, bound in contemporary three-quarter dark-blue calf over textured cloth boards, spines in 6 compartments with raised bands gilt decorated, morocco labels lettered in gilt, marbled endleaves. xxxi, 501; 486; 537; 498 pp. A very pleasing and well preserved set of this elusive printing. The bindings are handsome and strong, the text-blocks are clean, crisp and very readable. A handsome set. THIS IS A VERY PLEASING, HANDSOME AND QUITE ELUSIVE SET OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL WORK EVER UNDERTAKEN. It was in Italy while "musing amid the ruins of the Capital" that Gibbon formed the plan of his history. Originally published in six volumes from 1776 to 1788, Gibbon's fine scholarship has remained for the most part unchallenged. The work's numerous reprintings throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are evidence of its popularity and historical accuracy. "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147). The success of the work was immediate. "I am at a loss," Gibbon wrote, "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted in a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand, and the bookseller's property was twice invaded by the pyrates of Dublin. My book was on every table, and almost on every toilette...." Publication of this grand work placed Gibbon at the "very head of the literary tribe" in Europe, according to Adam Smith.

Cuvillier jeune et Ad. Bouin.

8vo. Contemporary half-calf. First and only edition of this very scarce pilot. It is especially written for the ship-owners and insurance companies, so the authors tried to give the clearest descriptions they could. The work is divided in 6 parts, with general observations on winds and streams, covering all the coasts of Europe and Africa. (The last four parts were never published). Fine copy. Polak, 2179.

Quedlinburg and Leipzig: Druck und Verlag von Gottfr. Basse, 1845. First ed. 8vo., 72 pp., folding frontispiece. Later paper over boards with panel of the original printed front wrapper mounted on front. Some leaves have small closed tears, chips, creases. Still very good. Calling upon the latest journal articles and texts from England, France and Germany, the author provides a concise description of the Daguerreian process to date, with descriptions of cyanotype and other paper processes. The last pages include priced lists of materials offered by the firms of Lerebours, and Voightlander and adverts for new publications related to photography and optics. Although listed by Roosens and Salu (#2868) A HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOKS, and Heidtmann, Bressemann and Krauss (#3585) GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHIC LITERATURE, 1839 - 1978, OCLC locates no copies of this seemingly unique 1845 first edition; it does locate five copies of the 1849 second edition at: SACHSISCHE LANDESBIBLIOTHEK, STAATSBIBLIOTHEK ZU BERLIN, ULB SACHSEN ANHALT ZENTRALE, and two copies at the BRITISH LIBRARY. A reprint of the 1849 edition was issued in 1993 by the Stuttgart bookseller, H. Lindemann in an edition of 999 copies.
