Autograph letter signed ("Anna Jameson"). No place or date ("Wednesday"), but probably late 1840s.

1845. 8vo. 3½ pp. on bifolium. To Anna Isabella Noel-Byron, "Lady Byron", the poet's wife: "Would the page of whom you were speaking last night, go to Lady Monson for a month or six weeks? - she only wants him while she is in London, & as it is of importance to her to have a boy of good character - & not easy to find one for so short an engagement she would be likely to overlook some outward deficiencies - moreover she is an excellent person & kind to all around her - particularly to her servants. Would you send the boy to 49 Park Street between 11 & 12 on Friday - if the situation suits him? I am sailing in extremest haste - & can only add my earnest hope that you are not the worse for yesterday [...]". - Jameson was a friend of Ottilile von Goethe, the poet's daughter-in-law. Her friendship with Annabella Byron dates from about 1845 and lasted for some seven years; it was brought to an end apparently through Lady Byron's unreasonable temper. The marriage between Lord and Lady Byron had lasted but a year, as Byron himself was given to fits of anger and maintained an incestuous relationship with his older half-sister Augusta Leigh. The couple separated in March 1816. Their only child, Augusta Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), was a gifted mathematician and is credited with creating the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine - in fact, the first computer program.

        THE CHIMES.

London, Chapman and Hall 1845. - First Edition, with the second state of the vignette titlepage as usual. Engraved frontispiece and title page, 11 other illustrations by John Leech, Richard Doyle, and others. 12mo, original red cloth, enclosed in a cloth slipcase with paper label. 175 pp. A solid very good copy, the corners rubbed, and light soiling. This was Dickens’ second installment in the "Christmas Books" series and his labors in creating THE CHIMES were "very arduous" in order to make it a worthy successor to A CHRISTMAS CAROL. He wrote to one of his friends that he believed he had "written a tremendous book and knocked the ‘Carol’ out of the field. It will make a great uproar I have no doubt." Of course, it did not exceed the CAROL in any way except in initial sales, but it is a charming tale nonetheless. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed "G. Spontini Conte di Sant' Andrea" to Benigni Ghisilieri

      - 1 page of a bifolium. Quarto (ca. 260 x 217 mm). Dated Paris, June 20, 1845. In ink on dark ivory paper with integral address panel and remnants of original seal to verso of second folio. In Italian (with translation).Spontini asks Ghisilieri to convey his thanks to a certain Consul Petrini. He mentions Giovanni Paggi, a well-known Italian oboist, composer, tenor, and mutual acquaintance.". The most accomplished Signor Paggi will tell you that he has listened to me saying constantly that I am still awaiting answers from Rome, Iesi, and Maiolati! Without this, I would not know that I am boring my friends with vague, useless and fruitless matters! I have repeatedly asked him, and would indeed ask you also, to convey my infinite thanks to the most kind Consul Petrini for the admirable offer he saw fit to make to me, of providing a friendly retreat and hospitable asylum for the many centenary festivities. I would be too afraid to accept, or be judged perhaps indiscreet or ungrateful. I am not in a position to make up my mind or to take such a decision, which no one should expect in such a state of uncertainty. "Slightly worn and soiled; creased at folds; edges trimmed with short tears and some fraying, slightly affecting several letters; minor loss to margins of second folio, corresponding to seal, not affecting text or address panel. Together with:An intriguing autograph letter signed "Ch. de Lonchamps" to Spontini. 2 pp. of a bifolium, ca. 249 x 190 mm. Dated Naples, June 7, 1810. In ink on ivory paper with integral address panel with remnants of original seal, and "Il Soprintendente Generale de' Teatri, e Spettacoli Ciambellano di S. M." printed at head. In Italian (with translation).Lonchamps attempts to lure Spontini back to his native Italy with a commission for a grand opera and an opera buffa, to be performed at the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo in Naples. He reminds Spontini that, although he may enjoy unprecedented advantages in Paris, it is only in his own country that he may see his friends and family - as well as fulfill the desire of the Queen of Naples to have him in her city."Having received your letter, my dear Spontini, I have been reflecting on the most suitable method of repaying you for your services. In consequence, I have summoned the impresario for the Royal Theatres, for whom you might like to set some drama to music, as much for honor as for profit. In doing so, knowing the benefit that could accrue from the graciousness of your action, I have engaged him to propose to you the composition of a major serious drama for the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo, for which you will be offered, in reward, the same as has been offered in the past to the most famous composers. Following the success of this composition (of which there can be no doubt), the above-mentioned impresario will propose an opera buffa, which will also be rewarded as above. This is what I have been able to obtain for the moment. I am sure that the impresarios of the Fiorentini and Nuovo theatres will not miss the opportunity to profit from your coming to Naples, by offering in their turn projects for their theatres, which are also enjoying fame at this time. "Creased at folds and corners; occasional small ink stains and smudging, just affecting final pen stroke of greeting; minor worming to upper inner margin, affecting one letter.Spontini was one of the leading composers in Paris when Lonchamps made his proposal. It is unclear whether Spontini accepted. After Fernand Cortez (1809), Spontini seems to have produced no new operas, either in Paris or Italy, until Pélage, first performed in Paris in 1814. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin. Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Fauna Antiqua Sivalensis, being the Fossil Zoology of the Siwalik Hills in the North of India, with 107 fine lithographed plates in nine elephant folio parts and text in one octavo volume, complete.

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1845-1849. First edition.. There is small bump to the bottom outer front corner of the first four parts, there is mild scattered foxing to the outer margins of some plates with little or no effect to the images, there is an old stain to the top rear inner corner of the wrappers of part I (this extends into the text for a few pages), the outer front wrappers of part I show some light browning, the wrappers, plates and text of all of the other plate volumes and the text volume are bright and clean with almost no signs of use; overall, this is a tight, bright and clean set in very good condition.. Pp. (text): 1-136; (plates): 107 fine lithographed plates. Text volume: in contemporary one-half dark green morocco leather with 5 raised bands (with red morocco title/author label in one compartment and gilt decorations in the other five compartments) over ornate French marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers (original printed blue wrappers bound in place), top page edge in gilt, 8vo (8 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches). Plate volumes: in the original printed stiff blue wrappers, each part is backed by the original brown cloth back-strip on the spine, elephant folio (20 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches). This complete work is the foundational study of all Asian Miocene vertebrate faunas. It also has much relevance for the study of European Miocene faunas as many of the taxa that were first described in this work later became known in Europe. In the early 1830s Hugh Falconer was the first to discover fossils in the Miocene Siwalik Hills of northern India; he collected there for a decade. Falconer returned to England in 1842 with 48 cases of fossils, bones and geological specimens. He compared his Indian fossils with fossils housed in museums throughout Europe. He teams up with paleontologist, Proby T. Cautley, who was actively involved in Falconer's Siwalik expeditions. Together they produced this significant work on Asian vertebrate paleontology. The only ownership marks is a single rectangular stamp of the Geological Society of London on the front wrapper of each part. The rear (blank) side of some plates in parts 1 and 2 also have a very small oval stamp of Geological Society. The text volume has a circular stamp of the Odd Fellows' Library Association of San Francisco; there are no other ownership marks in the text volume. This is work is very rare; this is the first copy I have handled in 28 years. Extra shipping will be required, especially for orders to Europe or Asia.
