        Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre

London. 1845 - Size: 605 x 335 mm. Very good condition. Lithograph with additional hand colour.Fine condition. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas. Abbey, Travel, 272; Gay 2216; Ibrahim-Hilmy, II, p.176; Lipperheide 1591; Tooley (1954) 402.

List of Kentucky Land and Sales.

1845. Ledger Detailing the Sale of Lands from "Granger's Great Tract" in Kentucky [Manuscript]. [Granger (Grainger), John A. (1795-1870)]. List of Kentucky Land and Sales, January 22, 1845. [New York?, 1845-1868]. 280 pp. 3 manuscript slips laid in. Folio (12-1/4" x 7-3/4"). Reversed calf, black-stamped fillets and frames to boards, hand-lettered title to front board, raised bands and lettering piece (reading "Journal") to spine. Some staining to boards and spine, moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to corners, some chipping to spine ends, rear hinge starting at ends. Light toning, content in neat hand to roughly 90 pp., mostly dating from 1845-1850, interspersed with additional blank pages and a few later unrelated entries with later dates through 1868. * One of Kentucky's largest landowners, Gideon Grainger (or Granger), a New Yorker, held 64,000 acres in the region around Bardstown and Glasgow, an area nicknamed "Granger's Great Tract." Divided into three sections, this ledger records the sale of his lands by Gideon's heirs. It has a detailed accounting of the "List of Lands belonging to the Heirs of Gideon Granger, remaining unsold in Hardin, Hart & Larue Co's. Kentucky" totaling some 35,078 acres. An accompanying notation reads: "All the above Land in Kentucky belongs to John A. Granger and was Deeded to him on the 22nd January 1845 by Mindwell P. Granger & Francis Granger Executors & Trustees of the Estate of Gideon Granger, deceased, which Deed is duly recorded in Hardin, Hart & Larue Counties, Ky. and is in the hands of Geo. T. Wood Esq. my agent at Munfordville, Hart Co., Ky.". John A. Granger. The second section of ledger is titled: "List of Squatters in John A. Granger's land all but two seen and visited by him in May 1844 & April 1845." Each squatter is listed by name and respective parcel with various notations such as "Old Road on the east Line - boundary disputed," "On the Nashville Turnpike," "Superior Land," "On the Litchfield Road," etc. A number of squatters purchased land, transactions likely prompted by Granger's site visits. The third section contains a "List of Land sold by George T. Wood, agent for Gen. John A. Granger," comprising numerous names and various notations. Fourth and final section is titled: "George T. Wood, agent at Munfordville Ky. in a/c with John A. Granger." This section cont

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild creasing, and a 1 1/4" tear at the far right edge of the image. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."

Berlin, Nicolai, 1845-56. - Folio (40-41.5 : 28-29.5 cm). Mit zusammen 32 meist lithographierten Tafeln. Einzige Ausgabe. Im Einzelnen: I/1: Berendt & Heinrich Robert Goeppert. Pflanzenreste. - I/2: Berendt & Carl Ludwig Koch. Crustaceen, Myriapoden, Arachniden und Apteren. 1854. 2 Bl., IV, 124 S., 17 Tafeln. - Nissen, ZBI, no. 319; Stafleu & Cowan, TL-2, no. 2073. - Rücken von Heft 1 alt überklebt, an Heft 3 teils abgeblättert, Rückumschlag dort mit unterlegtem Ausriß. Einige Eckknicke zu Beginn und Ende der Hefte. Etwas gebräunt und stockfleckig, insgesamt sauberes, breitrandiges Exemplar. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Die Friedenskirche, Potsdam, 1856. Original-Photographie. Vintage. Salzpapier-Abzug. Verlagsseitig montiert. Köln, verlegt durch F.C. Eisen, 1856.

- Vgl. Auslöser Potsdam, 29 - Heidtmann, Wie das Photo..., S. 55.

Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of HMS Beagle Round the World

London: John Murray, 1845. 2nd Edition 1st Printing. Three-quarters leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 17 x 13 cms (7" x 5"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: The very rare second edition of Darwin's 'first literary child', published by John Murray of London in 1845. (I can find no first editions and no other 1845 second editions for sale online.) 519 pages. Size: 17 x 13 cms (7" x 5"). Weight: 530g (1.2 pounds.) CONDITION: I would rate this as very good commensurate with its age. It is bound in three-quarters leather over red combed pattern boards, with 5 raised bands and gilt titling to the spine. The covers are clean and sound, having been sensitively restored. The binding is tight and secure throughout. The text and woodcuts are clean, bright and free from foxing. There is light foxing to the endpapers and a label of a previous owner - John Fielden - affixed to the front pastedown. All in all, a most attractive copy of a much sought-after second edition. THE BOOK: From Darwin Online: Darwin's Journal of researches, now known as Voyage of the Beagle, was his first book. As Darwin later recalled in his autobiography 'The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career'. He went on to write: As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men...... The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any of my other books.' The second and only other edition was first published in 1845 in John Murray's Colonial and Home Library; Darwin sold the copyright for £150. The text was extensively revised and, according to Lady Barlow, reduced from about 224,000 words to 213,000. The title changes to Natural history and geology; the maps are omitted, to Darwin's regret, not to return until 1890; but the number of woodcuts is increased. It is a miserable piece of printing in small type with mean margins, but then the series was a cheap one. (A bit harsh, I feel. The margins are indeed tight but otherwise it presents very well.)
