Book in very nice condition throughout. A magnificent volume. VERY GOOD. A masterwork of Victorian (and medieval) illustration. The artist, Henry Noel Humphreys (1810-1879) was one of the most popular illustrators of the Victorian era, and one of the greatest Nineteenth Century illuminators. In this volume, Humphreys presents his version of 72 illustrations from 15th century manuscripts of The Chronicles by Jean Froissart. Froissart (c. 1337-c. 1404) was a French priest and poet, primarily remembered for his Chronicles, an historical record of the 14th century and an unprecedented portrait of medieval life. His Chronicles covered the Hundred Year's War (from 1325 to 1400) and is the single most important source for the history of that period. Hand-painted. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall

Murchison "planned a visit to Russia, where the comparatively undisturbed Palaeozoic rocks presented fewer difficulties than in Britain. Accompanied by the French palaeontologist Edouard de Verneuil, and aided by the officials and savants of Russia, Murchison travelled to the shores of the White Sea, and thence to Nizhniy Novgorod, Moscow, and back to St Petersburg. In the following summer the two travellers returned to Moscow, and, after examining the Carboniferous rocks in the neighbourhood, made for the Ural mountains, followed them southwards to Orsk, thence westward to the Sea of Azov and the Donets coalfield before returning to Moscow. After a third visit to St Petersburg by way of Scandinavia and Finland, The Geology of Russia and the Ural Mountains by Murchison, von Keyserling, and de Verneuil was published in April 1845. The book established a third Palaeozoic system--the Permian--separating the Carboniferous rocks from secondary (Mesozoic) strata and confirmed the succession of Europe's ancient rocks as far east as the Urals" (ODNB).

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris: 1845 or later]. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and mild creasing. 7 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."         The Unconstitutionality of Slavery [with] Part Second.

156 pp.; [5], [137-281] pp. 8vo. Paper wrappers. First editions. Sabin 89617 & 89618. LCP. Afro-Americana 9700 & 9701. Amer. Imprints 456128. Dumond p.104. Though both G.W.F. Mellen in 'An Argument on the Unconstitutionality of Slavery, ' and William Gooddell in his 'Views of American Constitutional Law, in its bearing upon American Slavery, ' had put forward antislavery readings of the constitution, it was Spooner's work which was the most cogent argument, and the most highly regarded going through four printings in short order, and causing the radical abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, to respond in a critical review. Spooner added a second part in 1847 (published as a "cheap edition"), available either individually or bound with a reprinting of the original 1845 edition. Small chips to corners of wrappers, soiling on front wrapper, dampstain to lower corner on most leaves, still a very good copy; Part second lacking the rear wrapper, spine chipped at head, soil spots on title and a few early leaves, otherwise about very good.

Mindeblade om den nordiske Høitid den 13. Januar 1845. Autolitografier ved Lorenz Frølich, Johan Thomas Lundbye og P.C. Skovgaard.

Trykt hos Bing og Ferslew, København 1845. Folio. Over bordene vajede de nordiske flag.

On the Mechanical Equivalent of Heat

Richard and John E. Taylor London: Richard and John E. Taylor. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Joule's most developed and complete account of the results of his famous "paddle-wheel" experiments; includes his most accurate determination of what would later be known as the "Joule." "Joule began work about 1845 on a fourth method for determining the mechanical value of heat. His latest efforts received a polite but unremarkable reception at the Cambridge meeting of the British Association. This time the experiments involved a paddle wheel placed in a can filled with water. Weights attached over pulleys working in opposite directions communicated motion to the paddle wheel. Joule argued that 'the force spent in revolving the paddle wheel produced a certain increment in the temperature of the water'..."Although Joule's work with the paddle wheel was largely ignored throughout the late 1840's, he continued to work on the experiments and in 1849 "Joule began work in the cellar of the brewery on a fresh set of results (yielding a mechanical equivalent of 772) which Faraday communicated to the Royal Society on 21 June 1849. In 1850 'On the mechanical equivalent of heat' appeared in the Philosophical Transactions; Joule was elected FRS in June of the same year" (Dictionary of National Biography).IN: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society... for the Year 1850, Part I, pp. 61-82. London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1850. Quarto, original wrappers; custom box. Some toning to wrappers, rubbing and chipping to spine, joints reinforced; text extremely clean and largely unopened.         Alphabet Gothique par Midolle

N.p., (1845). Octavo. (26)ff. A manuscript alphabet book of calligraphic paintings, signed by the artist. Includes title page, twenty-four letters, and "Fin." A renowned nineteenth-century Swiss calligrapher and miniature-painter, Midolle executed his alphabets in the gothic style of lettering to resemble the text of a medieval manuscript, and often decorated his work elaborately. Although a leading figure in the field of chromolithography, Midolle also handcolored his work in the fashion of the miniature paintings found in fifteenth-century French illuminated books. Entirely hand drawn, Alphabet Gothique is executed in such a style, with each elaborately detailed letter rendered in bright colors that have retained their vibrancy to a remarkable degree. Multi-colored flowers, birds, and serpents are prevalent as compositional motifs, intertwined with the letters themselves. & & Bound in brown morocco with a cover design by noted American collector Cornelius Hauck. The design depicts an oak tree in brown and green morocco onlays. The tree is situated behind three arched and spired portals in gilt that suggest a cathedral. The spine also incorporates portions of the design. Gilt dentelles and silk endpapers complete this handsome binding, which is a fitting complement to the exquisite artwork inside. A.e.g. Very fine.

[Craft and Royal Arch Tracing Boards. London: ca. 1845].Blank book. Octavo (9 1/16 x 5 1/2 inches; 230 x 141 mm.). [124] leaves of ruled paper. Five hand-colored lithographed plates depicting tracing boards. The plates are signed: “Fr. Jo. Harris inv. et fecit” (first and third plates); “Fr. Jo. Harris inv. et fecit. No. 8. Strand LONDON” (second plate); “By Ino. Harris. 10 Sidmouth St Regent Square London” (fourth plate); “Des. & Drawn on Stone by Com. J Harris P.Z. Published the 8 April 1844. Ent. Sta. Hall” (fifth plate).Contemporary dark purple hard-grain morocco. Covers decoratively tooled in gilt with single gilt fillet border and gilt Masonic emblems, smooth spine divided into seven compartments with gilt lettering in one compartment and gilt Masonic emblems in the remaining six compartments, board edges and turn-ins decoratively tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, light blue moiré silk endleaves. With the original brass lock. A spectacular example of a mid nineteenth-century Masonic binding.“John Harris (1791-1873) was a talented artist of the early 19th century who was famous for his works in watercolours and miniature paintings. He specialised in watercolour illustrations for books (architecture, geography, etc), and exhibited at the Royal Academy as early as 1810. The British Museum possesses one of his pieces. John started his Masonic career in 1818, when he was initiated in London. The Duke of Sussex, Grand Master of the ‘United Free And Accepted Masons Of England’ in 1814, valued his works and it is assumed that the Duke commissioned John to harmonise the Tracing Boards by creating one official model for each degree. After dedicating all his strengths to his art, he unfortunately lost his vision but, despite this, continued to look after his invalid wife. From 1856 until his death, he was a dependent of the ‘Royal Masonic Benelovent [sic] Institution’” (Tracing Boards at Zetlandhalldotcom).Inscribed in ink ca. 1950 on the verso of the front free endpaper: “The Property of/Worshipful Bro. Jack Joseph Past Master of the Barnato Lodge 2265 joining Member of Old Owens Lodge 4440. Companion of Barnato Chapter 2265. First D.C. Old Owen’s Chapter 4440. The illustrations in this volume (5 in/all) depict the 5 tracing boards. The 3 first representing the 3 degrees of Craft masonry & the last 2 representing Royal Arch Chapter. They were drawn about 1844 as will be gathered by the date on the last board. Their workmanship is exquisite, it needs no praise or elaboration. The artist, one J. Harris, who was a P.M, P.[?] was also a printer & it is evident that he made a super effort in the execution of these illustrations. Their beauty is only equaled by their interest and extreme rarity. It is doubtful whether outside Museums & Libraries such choice specimens could be obtained or seen, & apart from their rarity of Masonic Interest, they are exceedingly scarce as items of early litho-graphic interest. Almost, one could describe them as unique. Their possession is a matter of intense gratification. Jack Joseph.”

FELIX ON THE BAT : being a scientific enquiry into the use of the cricket bat; together with the history and use of the catapulta. Also the laws of cricket, as revised by the Marylebone Club, 1845.

Baily Brothers 1845. . 4to (c 10 x 8 inches), pp(ii),40,(ii),(6 page publishers catalogue). 10 full-page lithographs, 7 coloured. A tight copy with gilt good on the front cover. Some staining to rear cover. Internally foxed and, as is often the case with this book, some staining to plates, particularly those of batting positions. However, a decent copy of the first edition. Padwick 397. The first book on cricket to be illustrated with coloured lithographs. The third edition is smaller and omits the uncoloured plates, which appear as illustrations in the text. The front free endpaper has two inscriptions. One is the signature of its first owner, Chas. Hore, dated July 1845, so presumably he bought it on publication. There is also a presentation inscription of a later era: 'To Sam Gleaves. A little appreciation from one cricket worker to another, much better and bigger - with sincere regards. W.J.Bagguley August 1923.' A W.Bagguley played for Derbyshire in 1905, and it is also a known name in Staffordshire, but I cannot place Gleaves.

        An original design for porcelain

[Paris: 1845 or later]. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some light soiling. 6 7/8 x 20 3/4 inches. The range of wares included copies of 18th- century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."       Paris: Delacroix, 1845 Short ALS "Making Amends". N.p., n.d.. [c.1845]. 8vo., 1 page in dark blue ink. Trans. "Feb. 27 / My dear Sir, / Please come next Thursday March 4 & have dinner with us to right all the unavoidable wrongs that happened three months ago. You will be among known faces & everyone will be happy to see you. / With my sincere devotion, / E Delacroix". Orig. "Ce 27 fév. / Mon cher Monsieur, / Venez donc jeudi prochain 4 mars diner avec nous pour vous dédommager des tords que nous a fait il y a trois mois la force des choses. Vous trouvez les figures qui vous connaissez et tout le monde heureux de vous voir. / Recevez l'expression de mon sincère dévouement, / E Delacroix. In generally fine condition. Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix [1798 - 1863]. French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school. His use of expressive brushstrokes & his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, Walter Scott & Goethe. Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens & painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant emphasis on colour & movement rather than clarity of outline & carefully modeled form. Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron, with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces of the sublime", of nature in often violent action. In the words of Baudelaire, "Delacroix was passionately in love with passion, but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible.".. Signed by Author.         Antelope Shooting [20]

[London: Henry Bohn, 1845]. Lithograph, coloured by hand, by McGahey, printed by Day & Haghe. Image size: 12 1/8 x 17 5/8 inches. 16 3/16 x 22 3/8 inches. A fine image from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Native American life. "These beautiful and delicate little animals seem to be endowed, like many other 'gentle and sweet-breathing creatures', with an undue share of curiosity...; and the hunter who wishes to entrap them easily does so without taking the trouble of travelling after them. For this purpose, when he has been discovered by them, he has only to elevate above the tops of the grass, on the point of an arrow or his ramrod stuck in the ground, a little red or yellow flag, the lightness of which will keep it trembling in the wind, to which they are sure to advance, though with great coyness and caution; whilst the hunter lies close, at a little distance to the right or the left, with his rifle or bow in his hand... In the landscape view in this plate, (which... is a picture from Nature,) a striking resemblance is seen to the noble Park scenery in England; and the resemblance is forcibly heightened by the group that is dancing over it." Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, -- yet honourable, contemplative and religious being". In a famous passage from the preface of his North American Indian Portfolio, Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian". He saw no future for either their way of life or their very existence, and with these thoughts always at the back of his mind he worked, against time, setting himself a truly punishing schedule, to record what he saw. From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the tribes and then finished his pictures in oils during the winter. The record he left is unique, both in its breadth and also in the sympathetic understanding that his images constantly demonstrate. A selection of the greatest of images from this record were published in the North American Indian Portfolio in an effort to reach as wide an audience as possible. The present image is one of the results of this publishing venture and is both a work of art of the highest quality and a fitting memorial to a vanished way of life.
