        An original design for porcelain

[Paris: 1845 or later]. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some light soiling. 9 x 12 inches. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."       [London: Henry Bohn, 1845]. Hand-coloured lithograph, deluxe issue cut to the edge of the image and mounted on card in imitation of an original watercolour, title label mounted beneath the image 'No. 25. / Wi - jun - jon. / an Assineboin chief. / (From Catlin's N.A. Indian Collection.)'. Sheet size: 17 1/2 x 12 1/8 inches. A fine image from the de luxe issue of Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of native-American life Wi-jun-jon, an Assiniboine chief and distinguished member of his tribe, was chosen as delegate to a Washington meeting in 1832. Travelling down the Missouri by boat, he first met Catlin in St. Louis, and his portrait was painted in his exceedingly beautiful native costume. When Catlin next saw Wi-jun-jon, it was upon the Chief's return trip from Washington, where he had exchanged his clothing for a military suit of blue broadcloth with epaulettes. So impressed was Catlin by the transformation that he painted this double portrait showing the Assiniboine chief going to Washington and returning to his home. In the image of Wi-jun-jon on his return trip he is wearing a top hat (where previously he wore a feathered headdress), smokes a cigarette (where previously he held a long pipe), leans on an umbrella and cools himself with a French-style fan.         Map of the World on Mercators Projection. New York 1845. Geographical Part engraved by John M. Atwood, NY

Ensign New York:: Ensign,. 1845.. Interesting rolling map of the world on its original rollers. The map is very decorative, with 4 corner vignettes of the peoples and animals of four continents, a border of shells of the world & a border of flags of the world. The corner vignettes depict America, Asia, Europe & Africa. The shell border is composed of 46 different vignettes of shells of the world, which are not merely designs, but portrayals of different shells, making it quite interesting to a conchologist. The map is also surrounded by a border of flags, both country and ship flags, 91 in total. Some of the notable flags include Texas, New Zealand, American ensign, East India Company, China, Cochin China, Batavia, Japan, Birman Empire, Tunis, Morocco, Salee, Tetuan. The western United States has relatively early Western cartography. "Oregon" meets "Mexico" at the "1819 border", north of San Francisco. The western-most named states are Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas & Louisiana, although the United States territory runs to the Rocky Mountains. Texas is recorded as separate from the United States & Mexico both by borders & color. Tracks of explorers include Columbus (1st-4th voyage), Cabot, Vasco de Gama, Drake, Anson, Cook (1st- 3rd voyage), LaPerouse, Vancouver & Wilkes' American Exploring Expedition. Arctic expeditions include Capt. John Ross, Capt. Parry (2 voyages), Franklin & Capt. Ross again. The Antarctic area is replete with voyages of discovery - three paragraphs describe voyages with dates & descriptions of Cook, Weddell, Crozier & Ross. The coastline is depicted with Wilkes' discoveries. The animals depicted in the "Asia" quadrant are largely Australian, including a kangaroo, joey, swan, spotted dasyure, wombat, platypus, flying squirrel & thylacine. Australia has many notations. Western Australia occupies the western half of the continent, and marked sites include Perth, Swan River, Canning River, Fremantle, Albany, Swan River Settlement. Southern Australia is denoted in a separate color with Adelaide marked. Tasmania & Hobart appear. Port Phillip, Port Jackson and Sydney are marked in New South Wales, which occupies the entire east coast. New Zealand has no settlements noted, but the Auckland & Campbell Islands are noted with discovery dates. Wilkes' 1840 route & landfalls are marked in red. Lithograph in black & tones of blue, red, yellow, pink & green. Modern linen backing restoring old cracks, with old varnish removed, a very professional job. Some brown spotting visible over the Pacific Ocean area. 45.5 x 31".

The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, according to the Authorised Version. With explanatory notes, practical observations, and copious marginal references. A new edition with an introductory essay, and numerous additional notes, critical, explanatory, and practical by the Rev. William Symington, D.D. Glasgow. 3 vols. (complete)

William Mackenzie Glasgow William Mackenzie nd (ca. 1845)g Large quarto. XXII, 708, 694, IV, 685, [2]pp. 3/4 leather over buckram, with gold lettering and decoration on spine, and gold-stamped borders on covers. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Reverend Thomas Scott on first volume. All three title-pages are steel-engraved. This fascinating Bible with commentary edited by Rev. Thomas Scott had the largest circulation and sustained it through many years. As a commentary Dr. Scott's work was superior to any that had appeared before its time. Horne, usually a discriminating judge, speaks of it in high praise (cf. his Manual of Biblical Bibliography, London, 1839, p. 259). This work is profusely illustrated with numerous full-page steel-engravings, each one with its caption. Some edge wear on bindings with rubbing along joints, corners and head and tail of spines. Sporadic foxing/browning throughout. Bindings and interior in overall good+ to very good condition.

Setzer desselben kein Wort Deutsch verstand."         Le Marchand d'Images [The Printseller]

Paris: Lemercier, ca. 1845. Lithograph by Jacot after a painting by Guillemin. Printed on wove paper with thick wove backing for support. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, mild rippling and a few minor foxing marks in the margins. 18 1/8 x 13 3/8 inches. 19 x 14 1/4 inches. This charming print represents a print seller attempting to sell his wares to a middle-class couple in a domestic interior. Most likely having spotted the only print in the sparsely furnished room, a faded religious subject hung over the armoire, the vendor selects a small image of the Madonna and Child from his portfolio, which he thinks might interest his potential clients. During the nineteenth century, prints were extremely popular among members of the middle-class. They were an inexpensive and consequently affordable way for people to own reproductions of works of art. Lithographs, which were invented in the late eighteenth-century, were particularly popular. Produced through a relatively easy process, they were the ideal medium through which images could be widely disseminated. Lemercier was one of the most prominent printers and publishers of lithographs in nineteenth-century Paris.

        Halmaturus Dorsalis: Gray [Black-striped Wallaby]

[London: by the Author, 1845-1863]. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H.C.Richter. Wove paper. 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches. An iconic image of a kangaroo family from John Gould's great folio work "The Mammals of Australia" Originally published in 13 parts between 1840 and 1863, Gould's work represents his only serious foray away from the world of birds and into that of mammals. The accuracy of the colouring and the beauty and accuracy of the plates mean that the work is still highly valued today. It represents one of the first concerted efforts to record the extraordinary fauna of Australia. Cf. Ferguson 10032; cf. Nissen ZBI 1661; cf. Sauer 14; cf. Wood p.365.
