        The Illustrated Family Bible

Glasgow - Francis Orr and Sons, 1845. Glasgow - Francis Orr and Sons, 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A large, attractively boundfamily Bible, with notes from Reverend John Brown. John Brown of Haddington (1722 1787), was a Scottish divine and author. His works include The Self-Interpreting Bible, The Dictionary of the Bible, and A General History of the Christian Church. The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown's most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was self-interpreting involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and reflections for each chapter. With blank family register to front. Coloured title pages to some of the gospels, presumed complete. Condition: In a decorative morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, with some rubbing and some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        Halmaturus Dorsalis: Gray [Black-striped Wallaby]

      - [London: by the Author, 1845-1863]. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H.C.Richter. Wove paper. 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches. An iconic image of a kangaroo family from John Gould's great folio work "The Mammals of Australia" Originally published in 13 parts between 1840 and 1863, Gould's work represents his only serious foray away from the world of birds and into that of mammals. The accuracy of the colouring and the beauty and accuracy of the plates mean that the work is still highly valued today. It represents one of the first concerted efforts to record the extraordinary fauna of Australia. Cf. Ferguson 10032; cf. Nissen ZBI 1661; cf. Sauer 14; cf. Wood p.365.

London - William Benning and Co., 1845. London - William Benning and Co., 1845 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A selection of legal reports and records of the cases of Sir Edmund Saunders. Sixth edition. Sir Edmund Saunders (died 1683) was an English judge, promoted to a high position at the end of the reign of Charles II of England. His Reports make it clear that Saunders acquired a large practice at the bar: North says that he was honest, clever and a drinker. In 1680 Saunders defended Anne Price, who was indicted for attempting to suborn one of the witnesses in the Popish Plot; and in the same year he was assigned as counsel for William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, and the four other Catholic peers accused of high treason. In 1681 he appeared on behalf of the Crown against Edward Fitzharris and Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, both of whom were indicted for high treason. In May 1682 he moved the king's bench for the discharge of Lord Danby, and in the following month he defended William Pain against the charge of writing and publishing letters suggesting that Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey had murdered himself. Complete in three volumes (volume II has been split between two books). Condition: Rebound in half-vellum. Externally, quite smart, although with some marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signatures to title pages. Pages are mainly bright and clean, with just some slight marginal age-toning and the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

The Child of the Islands (1845) showed Norton writing a very different type of poetry, in the condition-of-England genre. In obvious reference to her own difficulties these volumes focused on the plight of working-class children, whose desperate lives were portrayed in realistic detail and contrasted with the callous greed of the factory owners and upper classes -ODNB.         La Rigolbochomanie Croquis Lithographiques & Choregraphiques

Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, 1845. Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, 1845. Vernier, Charles. La Rigolbochomanie Croquis Lithographiques & Choregraphiques. Paris: Bureau du Charivari et Chez Martinet, (ca. 1845). Original orange boards. 30 lithographs printed in black. Front hinge restored, occasional foxing, not noticeable except for title page. Rigolbochomanie satirizes the can-can craze as it swept Parisian women who, to the amusement of men, attempted to emulate the brilliant and agile Rigolboche. Since the can-can was also considered a risque and shocking dance in a time when "an excessive display of ankle was considered dissolute" (Oxford Intl. Encyclopedia of Dance), this work documents the willingness of contemporary women to assert their sexual identity, in spite of accepted mores. Rigolboche (born Amelie Marguerite Badel) was a much celebrated music-hall performer of the mid 19th century. She was one of the first professional dancers to popularize the "can-can," and she was certainly the most accomplished. Originally, the can-can was a couple's dance in which the woman would flirtatiously kick her leg as high as possible and fling open her flaring petticoat. When performed by a professional, the can-can is a "complicated and technically demanding dance. Its most spectacular step is a pirouette on one foot, with the other foot grasped around the ankle and raised to eye level" (Oxford). The artist, Charles Vernier, was primarily a theatrical illustrator in the employ of "Charivari" between the years of 1845 and 1860. References: Leslie II, 541: DDM 2557.

Economic Chess Board, With a Complete Set of Chess Men, Peculiary Adapted by its Compact Form for Carrying in the Pocket and for Promoting the Study of the Most Intellectual and Noble of Games. Especially Suited to the Amateur of Chess Problems. Invented by Dr. Roget

London: De La Rue & Co., Registered Nov. 10, 1845 [but ca. 1850s-1860s?].. London:: De La Rue & Co., Registered Nov. 10,, 1845 [but ca. 1850s-1860s?].. A later edition.. A few slight small stains to the board and to the slipcase; some minor wear; in fine condition.. Folding chessboard of gilt-patterned glazed yellow paper over card stock, printed in red, approx. 5.75 x 3.75 inches folded (5.75 x 7.25 open), chess board interior of heavy paper strips printed in black and red. Paper chess pieces printed in black and red. Original slipcase with gilt-patterned glazed paper over card stock. The industrious Peter Mark Roget (1779-1869) is best remembered for his Thesaurus but was also known both for his restless inventiveness and his skill with chess puzzles (see DNB). This attractive early example of the Roget Economic Chess Board is fine example of both mid-Victorian design in gilt-printed glazed paper and of the Whiggish insistence on self-improvement and economic utility; with this model, the chess pieces are slips rather than the button-style pieces (as is sometimes seen with De La Rue traveling models). The bibliography of the Roget Economic Chess Board is a trifle obscure (to this cataloguer at least) as Longmans appears to have published it (and advertised it heavily in its publications) ca. 1846-1847, though at least one reference in a Staunton column from mid-1846 notes De La Rue as the maker of the board. De La Rue also later published "improved" travel chess sets without the Roget "Economic" brand.
