Histoire de Tous Les Peupl es et des Revolutions du Monde.

Paris. Eugene Penaud et Compie. n.d. c. 1845. - Illustrated with 74 full page, tissue-guarded plates of which 64 are magnificently hand-coloured. Complete as issued. 4 Volumes. 8vo. 6" x 9.5". Bound in half gilt titled calfskin and marbled paper covered boards. Raised bands. Collation of set : Vol. 1 - Spain, Portugal,Belgium and Holland ; Vol. 2 - China,Japan,Persia,Arabia,Turkey,India,Egypt, Algiers, Tunisia, Tripoli : Vol. 3 - Russia, Poland, Sweeden, Denmark ; Vol. 4 - England. Three of the four volumes ( 1, 2 and 3) have been very apparently exposed to moisture resulting in warping to boards as well as soiling and wrinkling to paper. Due to tissue guards, most plates present damage only to margins and verso's of images, although in several instances, light to moderate impairment has extended into the extremity of the illustration. Nevertheless, the plates have retained their crisp vibrancy, seeming to leap off the page. Proper framing and matting would conceal said damage in most cases. Volume 4 (England) is unaffected by moisture and is extremely crisp and bright. All in all, a most serviceable gathering of exquisite mid-19th century hand-coloured art. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Vermischte Schriften botanischen Inhalts.

      - Tübingen, L.F. Fues, 1845. 4to (262 x 215mm). pp. viii, 442, with 13 (5 partly coloured) lithographed plates drawn by the author. Contemporary marbled boards. First edition. Hugo von Mohl (1805-1872) was one of the most prominent German botanists of the 19th century known for his oustanding research on plant physiology and plant anatomy. The present rare work consists of 31 papers originally published elsewhere, sometimes revised and augmented. "In 1832 he was appointed professor of physiology at Bern and in 1835 professor of botany at Tüblingen, a chair he occupied until his death. Molh's scientific work deals with extremely diverse areas of botany. Among them he devoted himself to the technical problems of the microscope that he was able to construct. After a century Mohl remains famous for his works on the microscopic anatomy of plants and for his contributions to knowledge of the plant cell" (DSB). In recent years von Mohl's theory has received remarkable confirmation from the results of X-ray studies on cell walls. Stamp on title.Stafleu & Cowan 6187. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Prisoners of Perote: Containing a Journal Kept by the Author, who was captured by the Mexicans, at Mier, December 25, 1842, and released from Perote, May 16, 1844.

Philadelphia: G. B. Zieber and Company, 1845. - 12mo., (7 3/8 x 4 ½ inches). Near-contemporary half green crushed morocco, green cloth, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettering in two and fleur-de-lis in four, top edge gilt (hinge starting, the spine faded to brown). First edition. "This was the first book to appear on the Mier Expedition; it is still one of the best" (Jenkins). Stapp was one of the soldiers involved in the ill-fated Mier expedition, and gives a gripping first-hand account in this volume. "In the spring of 1842 he enrolled as a private in Capt. Alexander Stevenson's company of Missouri Invincibles for a planned invasion of Mexico, and later that year he joined Capt. Isaac N. Mitchell's company under Alexander Somervell. When Mitchell and twenty-four of his men left the army in December, Stapp joined the company of Capt. Charles K. Reese. He participated in the Mier expedition and was imprisoned at Perote. He was released on May 16, 1844, at the instigation of his uncle, Gen. Milton Stapp of Madison, Indiana. He remained for a time in Mexico recovering his health and enjoying his leisure and the pleasures of Mexico City. Before returning to the United States, Stapp paid a farewell visit to his comrades still in prison on July 5 and then, on July 12, 1844, sailed from Veracruz on the Woodbury, bound for New Orleans. "Immediately after his return Stapp began writing a book, The Prisoners of Perote; A Firsthand Account of the Mier Expedition, which was published in 1845 by G. B. Zieber and Company in Philadelphia. Probably this book did not have a wide circulation, for few copies have survived. In 1887-88 the La Grange Journal reprinted Stapp's story in its columns. In 1933 the Journal republished the book in a facsimile edition taken from its files. The book harshly denounces Antonio López de Santa Anna. Although Joe B. Frantz observed that the book was neither 'fair' nor 'dispassionate,' Wayne Gardqv found its denunciations only 'understandable expressions of outrage.' Stapp was well educated; the book abounds in classical references as well as literary and musical allusions" (Thomas W. Cutrer for Texas State Historical Association online).         Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 and to Oregon and North California in the Years 1843-44.

Washington: Gales and Seaton, for the Senate of the United States, 1845. - 8vo., (8 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). One large lithographic folding map ". of an Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the year 1842 and to Oregon & North California in the years 1843-1844" by Charles Preuss with waterways hand-colored in blue loosely inserted at end (pocket for map on inside back cover torn one or two small holes at folds, lightly browned, but NEAR FINE), four lithographic maps, including two folding, and 22 plates (some occasionally heavy spotting and browning). Original brown cloth (extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: Contemporary presentation inscription on the front free endpaper to: "Fred D. Sewall from his friend & brother XY George A. Fairfield". "ONE OF THE MONUMENTAL WORKS OF WESTERN EXPLORATION" (Kurutz) First edition, Senate issue, with the astronomical and meteorological observations omitted from the House issue and subsequent editions. Fremont's report, written with the help of his wife Jessie Benton, and map "changed the entire picture of the West [and] represented as important a step forward from the earlier western maps of the period as did those of Pike, Long, and Lewis and Clark in their day. [Fremont's map] represented trustworthy direct observation, a new, welcome, and long overdue development in the myth-encrusted cartography of the West. To Fremont and his magnificent map of his Second Expedition all praise. An altogether memorable document in the cartographic history of the West, and for it alone Fremont would deserve to be remembered in history. This map marked not only the end but the beginning of an era" (Wheat). In 1842 Fremont was commissioned to head "a 25-man, four-month expedition to survey and map the region of the emerging Oregon Trail through South Pass on the Continental Divide. A Report of an Exploration . . . between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains . . . (1843), the lively, factually detailed government report that Frémont and his wife produced after the journey caught the public imagination: images of Frémont's guide, the then little-known Christopher "Kit" Carson, riding bareback across the prairie, and Frémont himself, raising a flag on a Rocky Mountain peak, entered the national mythology. "In 1843 Frémont set out on a far more ambitious journey to the Oregon region. Disregarding government orders to return by the same route, he went south to Nevada and, in a dangerous midwinter journey, over the snow-covered Sierra Nevada into Mexican-held California. By the time the expedition returned east across the southern rim of what Frémont defined as the Great Basin, they had completed a bold fourteen-month circuit of the West, traveling 6,475 miles by their own calculations. The Frémonts' account of the journey, A Report of the Exploring Expedition to Oregon and California . . . (1845), enthralled the nation. Skillfully combining adventure, scientific data, and detailed practical information for emigrants, supplemented by a valuable map prepared by expedition cartographer Charles Preuss, it was "monumental in its breadth--a classic of exploring literature" (William H. Goetzmann, Exploration and Empire [1966], p. 248). Powerful propaganda, it stirred Americans to head west, guided, as pioneer Sarah Royce stated, "only by the light of Frémont's Travels" (Pamela Herr for ANB online). Cohen Mapping the West pp.130-133; Field 565; Graff 1436; Howes F-370; Sabin 25845; Streeter sale VI:3131; Wagner-Camp-Becker 115. The Fremont Report was most widely read than any other account of the West before the California gold rush. John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890), was an American military officer, explorer, the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States, and the first presidential candidate of a major party to run on a platform in opposition to slavery. During the 1840s, that era's penny press accorded Frémont the epithet The Pathfinder, which remains in use, sometimes as "The Great Pathfinder". Frémont collected a number of plants on his expeditions, including the first recorded discovery of the Single-leaf Pinyon by a European American. The standard botanical author abbreviation Frém. is applied to plants he described. The California Flannelbush, Fremontodendron californicum, is named for him. Many places are named for Frémont. Four U.S. states named counties in his honor: Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, and Wyoming. Several states also named cities after him, such as California, Michigan, Nebraska, and New Hampshire. Likewise, Fremont Peak in the Wind River Mountains and Fremont Peak in Monterey County, California are also named for the explorer. The Fremont River, a tributary of the Colorado River in southern Utah, was named after Frémont, and in turn, the prehistoric Fremont culture was named after the river—the first archaeological sites of this culture were discovered near its course.         LAGORCHESTES CONSPICILLATA - Spectacled Hare Wallaby

London 1845 - This superb folio-sized lithograph with original hand-color from John Gould’s monumental work MAMMALS OF AUSTRALIA, published in London from 1845-1863, is in excellent condition measures 15”x 22” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. Lagorchestes conspicillata, found across Northern Australia in tropical habitats, was first described by John Gould naming it the Spectacled Hare Wallaby. This species is in decline largely because of habitat loss due to land clearing. John Gould was without question the most prolific natural history artist of the nineteenth century. He worked during a period of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for such subjects, as well as the popular impulse to catalog exotic wildlife. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents. Gould became captivated by the mammals of Australia during his time gathering specimens for the Birds of Australia. As he recounted in the preface: “It was not until I arrived in the country, and found myself surrounded by objects as strange as if I had been transported to another planet, that I conceived the idea of devoting a portion of my attention to the mammalian class of its extraordinary fauna.” Gould produced The Mammals of Australia in an attempt to document the animals of that continent as exhaustively as he had its birds. The artist had a sense that a book on animals would not be as successful financially as his work on birds, for he was straying outside the area in which he was most distinguished. Yet the precision of the lavish illustrations was a testament to Gould's ability -- and that of the artists with whom he collaborated -- to embrace diverse fields with equal talent. Despite Gould's lack of optimism, the Mammals of Australia received immediate acclaim of documenting striking species that were all but unknown (including several which have since gone extinct). The book continues to be considered one of the most important works that Gould ever produced. Rich, vibrant color is an important attribute of the best 19th Century prints. Many prints by John Gould found on the market today have modern color that affects both the appearance and the value of these great works. John Gould died in 1881 still actively illustrating and producing fine natural history books. His stock of unsold copies, unbound text and plates in various states, lithographic stones, drawings and paintings, amounted to nearly three tons. Many of the uncolored pulls from his works have been recolored in the last thirty years, and these are often found on the market. Fortunately, the difference between original and modern color can be discerned by looking carefully at the print. When modern color is applied to 180 year old paper, the application is inconsistent; the cellulose of the aged paper has begun to breakdown and can no longer evenly absorb the watercolors, resulting in a splotchy uneven appearance. All of the Gould prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.

A bit of light foxing. Very good. A very rare and important work on California in the 1840s, by the former representative of the province in the Mexican national congress. Though modest in length Castañares's work is a detailed and significant study of California's resources, Indians, settlements, missions, agriculture, mineral wealth, ports, presidios, and civic structure. He supports the preservation of the Pious Fund, and presciently warns that should Mexico not promote, care for, and defend California, it would fall victim to foreign occupation. "Castañares' account of the rich gold placers near Los Angeles, from which 2000 ounces of gold had been taken in 1843, is perhaps the first account in pamphlet form of mining operations in California. Bancroft devotes nearly a chapter of the fifth volume of his HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA to an account of this book, which he regarded as one of the principal sources for the period 1844-45" - Streeter. His first home in Paris was an apartment near the Louvre museum. In 1854, at 13, Renoir accepted a position as an apprentice in the porcelain factory, Lévy frères, where he painted designs on china plates, cups, and vases. His skillful work earned a good income and the nickname Monsieur Rubens. In 1858, when automation of the porcelain factory made Renoir's position obsolete, Renoir tried other jobs including painting murals for cafes, religious hangings for missionaries, and decorations on fans. Renoir made frequent visits to the Louvre ?" near his apartment and the factory ?" studying the art of earlier French masters. Fremont, the first Republican candidate for president. With the country on the verge of civil war, he was succeeded in office by Abraham Lincoln shortly before the firing on Fort Sumter. John Brown Gordon, one of Robert E. Lee's best generals, fought in the Battles of Gettysburg and of Antietam, where he refused to leave the front until he suffered his fifth wound of the battle.
