MITCHELL'S REFERENCE AND DISTANCE MAP OF THE UNITED STATES

Philadelphia, 1845. Expertly repaired, backed with modern linen, trimmed in green cloth, on contemporary rollers. A few light creases and some marginal soiling, but on the whole a bright map in very good condition. This impressive wall map of the United States was originally published in 1836 and again in 1841, supplemented by an occasional ACCOMPANIMENT.... In this 1846 edition an important inset map is added, entitled "A General Map of the United States with the Contiguous British & Mexican Possessions" (16 1/2 x 21 inches). This inset incorporates the discoveries of Fremont in the Great Basin and California, shows all of Texas, and stretches Oregon Territory well into Canada, beyond the line of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In the large map, some counties are added in Iowa Territory. There are also small inset maps of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, Washington, Albany, Rochester, and Niagara Falls. An important American map, showing the country on the eve of its second great national expansion.

Plate LXV Little Harvest Mouse Mus Minimus, Aud & Bach Males & Females Natural Size The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America

Philadelphia:: Audubon, J.J.,, 1845.. Imperial Folio Edition. Matted in Rag Board. Very Good Condition with original hand-coloring. / . Original hand-colored lithograph by JT Bowen after painting by John James Audubon., FRS, FLS. Imperial Folio Edition. 21 3/8 x 27 3/8 inches. Very Good condition. Toning to extreme edges of sheet. 1/2 x 1/4 inch chip on top edge. Uniformily toned- otherwise fine. A charming composition of two pair of mice nibbling a corncob in a harvested field. A classic Audubon still life. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (Philadelphia c.1845-48) represents the culmination of a lifelong dream held by America's most prominent naturalist and visionary, John James Audubon (1785-1851). Following the completion of his magnum opus, the Double Elephant Folio Edition of Birds of America, c. 1824-38, Audubon was at liberty to pursue a project close to his heart, large scale portraits of all of North America's native animals. Audubon's effort to render America four-legged (thus quadruped) mammals in their natural settings pioneered the way for an entire culture of naturalist artists and engravers. Once the animals were placed within their native habitat, inspired by Audubon's classical composition and watchful eye, most subsequent naturalist painters rarely presented animals and birds void of a full botanical perch, landscaped setting, or woodland background. Very few, if any naturalist artists returned to the solo vignette so commonly found in most natural history works from the previous three centuries. Audubon's dream to complete this monumental work was made manifest through the artistic and clerical assistance of his two sons, John Woodhouse and Victor Gifford, as well as the Reverend John Bachman, who contributed the excellent text for the production. Today, the tale of Audubon's westward journey to hunt and gather skins and specimens and thus inspiration to complete the 155 paintings for the Quadrupeds is common enough. The story of how he sold his work through subscription format and created a smaller (Royal Octavo Edition) as a more democratic and affordable option to the production has been told religiously, and in great detail, by anyone reviewing these masterpieces once again. Yet through these critiques, America's premier ornithologist, painter and naturalist has gained his rightful place among the masters of Animal Portraiture, painters like Edwin Landseer and George Stubbs. Regardless of any criticism his artistic practices and personal affairs may have encountered, Audubon's legacy has enriched our understanding and appreciation of America's native species, both birds and animals. In addition, through Audubon's paintings we are offered the very first glimpses of the American landscape west of the Mississippi, as his work predates that of the Hudson River Artists.

THE SHIPWRECKED ORPHANS: A TRUE NARRATIVE OF THE SUFFERINGS OF JOHN IRELAND AND WILLIAM DOYLEY, WHO WERE WRECKED IN THE SHIP CHARLES EATON, ON AN ISLAND IN THE SOUTH SEAS

New Haven, 1845. 16mo. Original tan pictorial wrappers. Covers worn and soiled, spine perished. Text moderately foxed. Last leaf torn slightly in gutter margin. Still, a good copy of this scarce work. Scarce narrative, published as part of Teller's Tales for children, relating the tale of two boys who survived the wreck of the Barque Charles Eaton and subsequent capture by natives in 1834. The Charles Eaton crashed on the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. The castaways constructed two rafts out of the wreckage and began to float, finally coming ashore on the islands off the tip of York Peninsula, near present-day Queensland. Unfortunately the natives were not friendly and murdered most of the refugees. Several young boys were traded to other, friendlier natives for a bunch of bananas, but the only two left alive by the time rescue arrived were the cabin boy, John Ireland, and the young son of one of the passengers, William Doyley. The work is illustrated with eight plates showing the natives in various scenes, such as murdering the castaways. "This 'True narrative' published for juvenile readers is very rare" - Ferguson. Only a handful of copies on OCLC.

THE CHARLESTON BOOK: A MISCELLANY IN PROSE AND VERSE

Charleston, Samuel Hart. 1845. Hardcover. First edition. Original Publisher?'s cloth, 8vo, viii, 404 pages. Includes Penina Moise?'s ?"Miriam?" and ?"The Convict. ?" Includes Harby?'s ?"The Fall of Jerusalem. ?" The first Jew to publish a book of poetry in the United States—and a woman—Penina Moise (1797-1880) was one of the most prolific and creative writers of poetry on Jewish themes in America. She was also superintendent of the first Jewish religious school in Charleston and many of her poems and songs focused on jewish history and heritage in order to encourage a sense of pride in the Jewish faith of her school-children. Teacher, playwright, literary critic and newspaper editor Isaac Harby (1728-1828) was an early advocate of reforms in Judaism in Charleston, South Carolina. ?"?'Charleston book-seller and Reform Jewish leader Samuel Hart, Sr. , proposed that Charlestonians join the trend?'?" of putting together an anthology of writings by city residents, much as several other cities had done throughout the late 1830s. Simms, the leading literary figure of Charleston, and one of the nation?'s most widely-read and celebrated authors, was an easy choice for the project?'s editor. Conceived of in 1841, and finally published in 1845, The Charleston Book found little commercial success. Yet, the book is an important document of the vibrant literary scene of mid-century Charleston, one which reveals much about Simms?'s understanding of the relationship of his home city and region to the overall intellectual life of the nation?" (Moltke-Hansen in Simmons, 2014) . A similar copy sold for over USD 1150 at auction in 2014. Wear to boards, lacks the front end paper. Otherwise a solid nice copy, some foxing, in the original publisher's cloth binding. Good Condition. (amr-45-46) .

NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLORING EXPEDITION. DURING THE YEARS 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842

Philadelphia, 1845. Text: Contemporary half calf over marble paper-covered boards, rebacked to style in roan, spines ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled edges. Some light offsetting from plates. Atlas: Contemporary marbled calf, expertly rebacked to style. Corners slightly rubbed. Browned, some expert repairs to map folds. Else very good. All contained within three modern blue morocco-backed cloth boxes, with onlaid red morocco labels tooled in gilt. First edition, mixed issue, of the text: the volumes limited to between seventy-five and 150 copies. The first three volumes of the text are variants of the first edition, first issue (Haskell 1, limited to 100 copies, of which twenty-five were destroyed by fire): the official issue, with Sherman's name on the front of the titles, but a variant with no mention on the half titles that the work was published "by authority of Congress." The fourth and fifth volumes are from the first edition, second (unofficial) issue (Haskell 2A, limited to 150 copies). The atlas (Haskell 17B), from an edition of 1000 copies, was issued to accompany the imperial octavo issue. This set therefore includes elements from the only two quarto issues of this work, allied with the atlas from the subsequent imperial octavo issue. "Wilkes wrote in Jan. 28, 1845, that since general distribution 'would not be accomplished by the one hundred copies ordered by the government of the 4to edition...I have had printed the remainder of the token, (namely 150 copies) of the 4to edition, for the purpose of presentation to my friends, and for sale to those who should desire a book of that size'" - Haskell (p.37). The United States Exploring Expedition "was the first American scientific expedition of any size, charged to 'extend the bounds of Science and promote the acquisition of knowledge,' and was one of the most ambitious Pacific expeditions ever attempted" (Forbes). The expedition represents "the first governmental sponsorship of scientific endeavor and was instrumental in the nation's westward expansion. Specimens gathered by expedition scientists became the foundation collections of the Smithsonian Institution. Significant American contributions in the fields of geology, botany, conchology, anthropology, and linguistics came from the scientific work of the expedition. Wilkes's evaluations of his landfalls influenced later U.S. positions in those areas" (DAB). "The chief fields of exploration in this expedition were the coast of the Antarctic continent, the islands of the Pacific Ocean, and the American northwest coast. In total some 280 islands in the Pacific and adjacent waters and 800 miles of streams and coasts in the Oregon country were surveyed, and 1,600 miles of the coast of Antarctica were charted. After leaving Hampton Roads in 1838, the expedition visited Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, Brazil, Patagonia, the South Shetland Islands and Peter I Island, Chile, and Peru, before proceeding to the Tuamotu or the low Archipelago, the Samoa Islands, and New South Wales. From Sydney, Wilkes sailed into the region now known as Wilkesland. He visited Tonga, the Fiji group, and the Hawaiian Islands in 1840, and in 1841 explored the west coast of North America. Much valuable information is given on the Columbia River, the Willamette Valley, Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Sacramento Valley, and the findings on the northwest coast of America proved timely in light of the dispute with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory. The Wilkes expedition also visited San Francisco bay and the Sacramento River. Crossing the Pacific, Wilkes called at the Philippine Islands, the Sulu Archipelago, Borneo, Singapore, and, rounding the Cape of Good Hope, finally reached New York in 1842, having sailed round the world" - Hill.

INDIAN MELODIES...HARMONIZED BY THOMAS HASTINGS, ESQ

New York, 1845. Contemporary half calf and publisher's printed boards. Very good. In a dark red chemise and half morocco slipcase. Very good. The earliest published anthology of American Indian songs, composed and collected by a Narragansett Indian residing in Wisconsin Territory. This work consists of music and English text for over 100 religious hymns, each named for a different North American tribe, chief, place name, etc. The first hymn is entitled "Pequot S.M.," followed by "Shenandoah," "Cummanche," "Quapaw S.M.," "Huron," "Flathead," "Iroquoi," and so on through "Tallahassee" and "Shoshonee." In the preface, which is dated "Manchester, Wisconsin Terr., March 7, 1845," Commuck states that his song collection is the product of seven years of work, and that his intention in publishing it was to earn a little money to help support his household of seven souls. Although the NUC locates twenty-one copies of this work, it is very rare in commerce. A curious early collection of religious music by a Narragansett Indian, the first such work known. Commuck also wrote "Sketch of the Brotherton Indians," which appeared in the report of the Wisconsin State Historical Society for 1857-58.

LE TAVOLE, CON LA ESATTA RIPRODUZIONE CODICI DI DIVERSE ETÀ , SONO INSERITE PER CHI VOGLIA APPRENDERE LA LETTURA DEI VARI TIPI DI SCRITTURA MEDIEVALE. EDIZIONE COMPLETA, ANCHE SE IL 3 VOLUME è ASSENTE PER RAGIONI DI ERRORE EDITORIALE, COME SI PUò CONSTATARE AL LINK PIù SOTTO. I VOLUMI SONO IN CUCITURA NUDA, E CIOè SENZA RILEGATURA, COME USAVA UN TEMPO.

"...The Roadsters' Album, a rare and humorous volume of hand-colored aquatints by C.B. Newhouse, an artist who confined himself almost exclusively to scenes of mail and stage coaching and sport driving. The book is an excellent example of Newhouse's work, as his images usually portray the speed associated with the open road, and the calamity or comedy that speed can bring about" (National Sporting Library). At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Messrs. Fores (established 1785-86) "..specialised in publishing and selling the best sporting prints" (Siltzer).Along with Newhouse's Scenes on the Road (1834-35) it would be difficult to find a book which better illustrates the world of coaching as it must have been than The Roadsters' Album. Each aquatint has been expertly hand-colored with a vividness that would be hard to surpass. The Plates:1. Travelling in a Hunting Country - "I hope you are not much hurt, Sir."2. An Unwelcome Fare - "All that luggage by the Mail, Ma'am, quite impossible."3. The Drag is broke and we are on the Bank.4. "No time to lose, Ma'am; here's the other coach close behind."5. "Hold hard! You have forgot the lady."6. Is the Bottom pretty sound?7. A False Start.8. Taking an Inside Birth [sic] - "It strikes me we're going to have some rough weather."9. An Awkward Place in a Frost.10. I'm afraid we have now got into the Ditch.11. The Sleepy Gate-keeeper.12. The Old Grey loosed his Trace again!13. "Quite full, Sir."14. One Mile from Gretna, our Governor in sight.15.         North American Indians [plate]

1845. CATLIN, George.North American Indians.New York: James Ackerman's Lithographic Rooms, [1845].A fine image from Catlin?'s North American Indian Portfolio, one of the most important accounts of Native American life, depicting three Native Americans "representing three different tribes, of various latitudes": an Osage warrior, from a southern latitude; an Iroquois ("an almost extinguished tribe"), with his tomahawk in hand, from a northern climate, and a Pawnee woman, from an intermediate latitude. Handsomely framed. After seeing a delegation of Indians in Philadelphia, Catlin resolved "to use my art and so much of the labors of my future life as might be required in rescuing from oblivion the looks and customs of the vanishing race of the native man in America" (DAB). Between 1830 and 1836, painting some 600 portraits of Indians, their villages and their lives, he produced one of the most important and sought-after works in American ethnology, the North American Indian Portfolio. Catlin lived among almost all the important tribes, scattered throughout the Upper Missouri, the headwaters of the Mississippi, and the Southwest. Later he transported his "Indian Gallery" throughout the eastern United States and Europe in a vain attempt to arouse public sympathy for the Indians; he dedicated his life to his mission and died destitute. This is plate No. 1 from his Portfolio, first published in London in 1844 with 25 hand-colored lithographs. Abbey notes that "copies are also found with the imprint New York: James Ackerman, 1845"--this plate is from that early New York issue. "The American edition of the Indian Portfolio was produced by the New York lithographer James Ackerman entirely separately from the English versions. In his preface Ackerman proudly stated that he had demonstrated American craftsmanship superior to English at a lower cost. Despite his admirable efforts the book sold very poorly, as its absence from contemporary American collections and its notable rarity today attests" (Beinecke Library).See Abbey, Travel 653; Sabin 11532.Fine condition.
