Nuevo Diccionario de Agricultura, teórica-práctica y económica, y de medicina doméstica y veterinaria .

1842-1845. . - Boix Editor, Imprenta y Librería. Madrid. . 13 Vol. . . Cuarto.

Rome: Coi tipi della S. Congregazione de propaganda fide, 1845. Duodecimo, 50 pp., uncut and unopened; a pristine copy in the original plain blue paper wrappers. A superb copy of this rare and interesting pamphlet, the Italian edition of John Brady's Descriptive vocabulary of the native language of W. Australia (Ferguson, 3996; see 3995 for the English-language edition). This edition was published immediately after Brady's important original English edition, but it is here translated for the use of Italian missionaries like the Benedictine Dom Salvado, who sailed with Brady when he returned to Western Australia in 1846.John Brady was an Irishman, who was persuaded to offer his services to the Australian mission while visiting Rome in 1837. Originally detailed for Norfolk Island, he actually ended up for several years the chaplain at Windsor. It was during this time that he first became interested in aboriginal languages, an interest which he continued after being sent by the Right Reverend Bishop Polding to the Swan River settlement in 1843. He established a church in Perth within months, and then sailed for Europe to garner support for his fledgling mission, being consecrated Bishop of Perth at this time. It was during this period that he published his Descriptive vocabulary in English and Italian, before returning in 1846 together with an ill-suited array of friends and supporters, whose attempts at cooperation quickly foundered. Most notable among the group of 27 missionaries who sailed with Brady was the famous Dom Salvado, later associated with New Norcia.Although Brady left Western Australia in 1852 after several run-ins with church authorities, he never resigned his see, and was still Bishop of Perth when he died in France in 1871.The two editions of his vocabulary were Brady's only published works, and this is by far the rarer. Ferguson knew the work from two copies, his own, and one in the South African Public Library. It is now known to be held in the State Library of New South Wales and the National Library of Australia.

Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1845.. 16mo. 2 vols. 1 blank f, (2), CLXXX, 154 pp., 1 bl. f. 105, 202 pp. Printed blue wrappers.. Editio princeps of the Arabic text, with French translation, of Sirafi's "Silsilat al-tawarikh", a commentary on an anonymous account of Arabic trade with China and India. In two books: the first said to be taken down from statements made by a merchant named Sulaiman, the second a continuation of the first, by Hasan. Appended to the Arabic text are extracts from the Maruj al-dahab and the Kitab Altanbih by Ma'sudi. - In 1718 the Abbe Renaudot, grandson of Theophraste Renaudot, published a volume entitled "Anciennes relations des Indes et de la Chine", by two Muslim travellers who visited the East in the 9th century AD - a French translation of a manuscript fragment which was part of Colbert's library. In 1811 the orientalist Louis-Mathieu Langles set out to publish the original Arabic version, but death overtook him before he had time to accompany his edition with a preface or commentary, and the project remained unfinished in the Imprimerie Royale until Reinaud, professor of Arabic at the School of Oriental Languages, completed it with his own translation and numerous notes. - GAL S I, 405.         Medical topography of Brazil and Uruguay: with incidental remarks

Philadelphia: Lindsay and Blakiston. 1845. "First edition, 8vo, pp. 296; 4 lithographed plates, each with explanatory leaf ( not counted in pagination); original brown cloth with light wear to extremities and the covers a little scuffed, foxing throughout text, heaviest in the margins. Borba de Moraes, Bibliographis Brasiliana, p. 348, calls for an errata leaf at the end of the text that is not present here. Horner (1804-1892) was a surgeon in the U.S. Navy. In this work, based upon private and public journals kept during two cruises, Horner comments on such topics as sanitary and environmental conditions on ship, means of preventing illnesses in a crowd, influences of climate on disease, the physical characteristics of the native peoples he encountered, diseases prominent in Brazil and Uruguay, local methods of medical treatment, sanitary conditions of the countries, and cost of health care. He also comments on the quality of the local medical schools, hospitals, and pharmacies, as well as the use of local flora in botanic medicine.         Narrative of Some Passages in the History of Van Diemen's Land, During the last three years of Sir John Franklin's Administration of its Government

London: Richard and John E. Taylor, circa, 1845. Octavo, very good in recent cloth with original wrappers bound in; ownership signature of William Kay and presentation notation (see description), bookplate of Rodney Davidson. Presentation copy to Franklin's nephew. First, unpublished edition of a "very rare" book (Ferguson).Printed in highly limited numbers for private distribution among Franklin's immediate circle, this was his justification in answer to the charges made against him in the dispute with the Colonial Office over his disastrous but well-intentioned administration of Van Diemen's Land. Perhaps surprisingly given the contentiousness of the dispute, the book is an even-toned autobiographical narrative of events from a decisive period of the history of Van Diemen's Land, when the future of the colony itself hung in the balance. This is by far the rarest of the two books published by Franklin, the other being Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea (London, 1823), and was written by Franklin after his return to England in 1844. Shortly after, he left on his fatal expedition to the Arctic, and it has been said that Franklin's clash with Whitehall weighed on him when he accepted the command. The work was not published until after he had sailed, and so all presentation copies are inscribed by an amanuensis "By order of Sir John Franklin".This particular copy was presented to the architect and surveyor William Porden Kay (1809-c.1870), the nephew of Sir John Franklin through his first wife Eleanor Porden. At Franklin's invitation, Kay took a position as architect in Van Diemen's Land, arriving at Hobart in 1842.

1845. first edition. They Called Him Trotty"[KELLIEGRAM, binding]. DICKENS, Charles. The Chimes: A Goblin Story of some bells that rang an old year out and a new year in. London: Chapman and Hall, 1845. First edition, second state of engraved vignette title-page. Octavo (6 5/16 x 4 inches; 160 x 100 mm). [viii], 176 pp. Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette title-page and eleven other illustrations within the text by Daniel Maclise, Richard Doyle, John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield. In a signed Kelliegram binding, c. 1900, of full red crushed levant morocco, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, front cover with a beautifully' contoured' inlaid design in red, tan, brown and black morocco reproduced from the illustration on page 9, spine with five raised bands, decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Spine very slightly darkened. Original cloth covers and spine bound in at the end. A fine example.  The front cover illustration is taken from the text on page 9 "Then indeed, you might see Toby looking anxiously out from his shelter in an angle of the church wall --- such a meagre shelter that in summer time it never cast a shadow thicker than a good-sized walking stick upon the sunny pavement --- with a disconsolate and lengthened face. But coming out , a minute afterwards, to warm himself by exercise: and trotting up and down some dozen times: he would brighten even then, and go back more brightly to his niche. "The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In, a short novel by Charles Dickens, was written and published in 1844, one year after A Christmas Carol and one year before The Cricket on the Hearth. It is the second in his series of "Christmas books": five short books with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s. The book was written in late 1844, during Dickens' year-long visit to Italy. John Forster, his first biographer, records that Dickens, hunting for a title and structure for his next contracted Christmas story, was struck one day by the clamour of the Genoese bells audible from the villa where they were staying. "All Genoa lay beneath him, and up from it, with some sudden set of the wind, came in one fell sound the clang and clash of all its steeples, pouring into his ears, again and again, in a tuneless, grating, discordant, jerking, hideous vibration that made his ideas "spin round and round till they lost themselves in a whirl of vexation and giddiness, and dropped down dead."Two days later Forster received a letter from Dickens which read simply: "We have heard THE CHIMES at midnight, Master Shallow!", and the writing of the book began. Forster describes Dickens' intentions in writing The Chimes as striking "a blow for the poor".The beautifully inlaid and colorful] "Kelliegram bindings were one of many innovations of the English commercial binding firm of Kelly & Sons. The Kelly family had one of the longest connections in the history of the binding trade in London, having been founded in 1770 by John Kellie, as the name was then spelled. The binding firm was carried on by successive members of the family into the 1930s. William Henry Kelly significantly developed the company in the first half of the nineteenth century, followed by William Henry, Jr., Henry, and Hubert Kelly, who took control in 1892, taking the firm into the twentieth century…The development [during the 1880s] that came to be known as Kelliegram was one of the bindery's most notable, and the popularity continues today as demonstrated by the prices Kelliegram bindings command at auction and in the rare book trade" (Dooley, Kelliegram Bindings, Brynmawr Library)Smith, Dickens, part 2 #5
