On the facing rear pastedown is a hand drawn map (neat and square) of Nauvoo in red ink, with a map key in the lower right corner with twenty-two landmarks listed, that correspond to numbers on the map. Landmarks include: Mansion House, Joseph Smith Store, Nauvoo Temple, Relief Society Marker and Masonic Hall. Sixth volume of the highly influential Nauvoo newspaper. The Times and Seasons was the official newspaper of the L.D.S. Church, and between its pages was the first appearance of the personal history of Joseph Smith. One cannot hope to understand the Nauvoo period of Mormonism without the 'Times and Seasons'. More than it's predecessors, it captures the spirit of the Latter-day Saints as it chronicles their day-to-day efforts to spread their message and gather the converted. Its pages reflect the optimism which fueled the building of the City of Joseph and the sorrow which accompanied it's abandonment. Crawley 60. Flake/Draper 8955. Scallawagiana 16. Streeter 2271.         An original design for porcelain

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild creasing, and a skillfully repaired 2 1/2" tear in the right margin. A rare example of an original watercolour design for porcelain, by the Samson factory of Paris. This finished design was intended as a reference source from which the porcelain painters could work, using the design as a guide for the colours and image to be transformed from paper into fine porcelain. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established by "Edmé Samson (b. Paris, 1810; d. Paris, 1891) at 7, Rue Vendôme (later Rue Béranger) in Paris. The intention of the firm was to reproduce ceramics from museums and private collections, and it claimed that all such reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. In 1864, the factory was moved to Montreuil by Samson's son, Emile Samson (1837-1913). The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience."         The indispensable guide for travellers on the railroads of Belgium. ...... Translated from the French by M. Asborne de Chastelain.

Brussels: Eugène Landry. 1845-1846 [sic]. 8vo., 24 tinted lithographic plates, folding map and 5 folding city plans, 280pp., original printed boards, the covers a little soiled and with a couple of small ink stains, slight wear to extremities, but nonetheless a very good copy indeed. First edition in English and seemingly very rare. Goldsmiths 34729 (but see further note* below). COPAC finds no other copy and apparently not in BL (which seems to have only a French printing of 1853). * Goldsmiths allocates this to '1846' which is surely wrong. Our copy has the contemporary ownership inscription of a Mr. Shand 'Brussells Aug. 15th 1845'. The long title on the printed upper board provides a much fuller idea of the contents of this Belgian 'Bradshaw': The Indispensable Guide for travellers on the railroads of Belgium, for the year 1846, drawn up from authentic documents; containing the prices on each road, etc., the description of every place crossed by the railroads, and furnished with a map of Belgium and plans of all the principal towns, with an account of Spa and the neighbourhood of Liège.> The authors present their Guide> with exuberance and extravagance: 'The rapid extension of the railroads of Belgium, owing to the solicitude of the government and to the enlightened and active administration of the minister of public Works; the new sections and lines which will soon be added to the several sections and lines already opened to circulation; the immense number of travellers who, thanks to the quickness as well as convenience of this wonderful means of communication, daily travel over the kingdom, rendered the publication of a work almost indispensable, which might point out to the foreign traveller, or remind the Belgians of all that is curious or interesting in this rich and varied country. The publication of this Guide,> compiled from authentic documents, and which (it is to be hoped) we have rendered sufficiently complete to set aside the necessity for any other work on Belgium, will, we trust, add one more pleasure to that of travelling by the railway, for in this portable and convenient form it presents all that may be useful to be known concerning each road or city.'

[TWO PRINTED LAND GRANT DOCUMENTS, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, FOR A FORTY-ACRE PLOT IN CHEROKEE COUNTY]

[Cherokee County, Ga.], 1845. Old folds. Light toning and soiling from wax seal. Manuscript notes on verso of second sheet; repaired with tissue at folds. Wax seal present but detached. Good. A pair of documents concerning a land grant for forty acres of land in Cherokee County, Georgia, surveyed in 1832 and granted in 1845, based on the Land Lottery of 1832. The first document grants forty acres of land in Cherokee County to "John S. Smith's orps" of Putnam County. The land, situated in the first district of the third section, was surveyed June 20, 1832, and the plot is mapped out at the top of the sheet - two streams run diagonally through opposite corners of the lot. It is signed by D.E. Bothwell, Comptroller General, and W.A. Mitchell, Treasurer, on either side of the map. The second document, dated Sept. 1, 1845, affirms the grant as according to the "Act to lay out the gold region on the lands at present in the occupancy of the Cherokee Indians, into small lots, and dispose of the same by separate lottery," passed on Dec. 24, 1831. The whole is signed on the front below the ribbon with the signature of George Crawford, governor. Georgia used a lottery system to distribute land taken from the Cherokee and Creek Indians. The lot sizes varied, with the largest being up to 490 acres and the smallest being 40 acre lots distributed during the Gold Lottery of 1832. An act passed by the Georgia General Assembly on Dec. 24, 1831, authorized approximately one third of the 160-acre land districts previously set aside for the sixth lottery to be designated as gold districts and divided into 40-acre lots, to be distributed in a separate lottery. This separate lottery was the seventh land lottery, known as the Gold Lottery of 1832. The Cherokees went to court to prevent distribution of lands which they claimed belonged to them, and won the case (Worcester v. Georgia), but Andrew Jackson ignored the decision in his zeal for Indian relocation.

SHAKA GOICHIKI DAI KI ZUE: The Story of Shakyamuni The Lord Buddha.

[Osaka 1845, Kawachiya]. Orange stitched wrappers, 6 vol.set. very nice copy in original and worn blue silk Chitsu, clips. lacking, original title paper slip case used as inside cover. to the Chitsu, 17.5 x 25 cm., 25+38+38+37+35+34+29+36 double. leaves Japanese text, 33 single & double page illustrations by the master signed: Zen Hokusai Manji Rojin. Excellent and strong impressions, marvelous Buddhist illustrations, text by Yamatoya Keizo. Profusely illustrated with some of Hokusai's best & most famous illustrations of the Buddha's life. * This work is written in a Jataka [stories of rebirth] like format, or true from stories from the Buddha's pasts. They show by example to the Sangha [the Buddhist community] what the "Righteous Path" is by telling stories with examples; showing right from wrong. Dukkha [suffering] is one of the main themes, and the associated punishments for "wanting, greed, wrong livelihood, and other sins" are herein illustrated. Most of the scenes are set in a tropical background, with banana and other warm climate plants. Since the Buddha was from tropical India, this work shows the Japanese idea of that setting. Sanskrit is also written appropriately, but the Japanese text is for a lay public. * Great serpents and daemons are illustrated as omens, many of the people illustrated are in lavish Chinese or Korean gowns, showing the movement of Buddhism from India through China & Korea, as it progressed to Japan. * Vol. 1 begins with illustrations of the Gods of the Elements: Sky, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and a picture of the Lotus, a flower that grows in the most filthy of atmospheres but sends up the most beautiful & fragranced flower, representative of human life. * Vol. II shows a great gathering of the Sangha as they see the young Shakyamuni standing on a lotus blower as the Heavenly Two-Headed Dragon blows his powerful breath upon the Buddha giving him life. Other great and holy Gods in the Heavens also look upon the Buddha as he is born of the Lotus. Later the powerful and older Buddha suppresses a wild elephant, fights great horse-mounted warriors. * Vol. III shows the Buddha as he is seated beneath the Bo Tree [ficus religiosa] as he speaks to disciples. One impressive illustration shows Shakyamuni as he meditates on a craggy rock, with a gigantic four-eyed daemon who tries to distract him. * Vol. IV shows Shakyamuni as an itinerant priest, another shows great warriors with spears and lances being fended off by the Master's great radiant powers, later one shows a Heavenly Demon holding a lance with a small lantern suspending a Sake bottle with a Swastika [Buddhist] design, under which are two naked and highly emaciated men who float in black space likely for drinking too much...the last one show a sinner with face to the floor as each arm is held fast by the feet of two stick wielding Boddhisatvas as they thrash his backside as Shakyamuni looks on. * Vol. V starts with a great prayer meeting of the Sangha as Shakyamuni displays two Mudras as two disciples sit on either side of him on a high pedestal while other Boddhisatvas look on; one beats the prayer drum & another hits the bronze gong while the others bow their heads in obeisance, one single Bodhisattva looks to the sky as a great and Terrible Dragon flies over the whole Sangha. The next shows Shakyamuni on a great cliff, while the Wind God does his best to blow the small Sangha away. In the next we are presented with an example of those that have been re-incarnated as half animal and human. The Shakyamuni looks upon a man with the "right livelihood" who is bone thin, but is a Mochi maker [rice pounder], but does not eat animals, while in the background sheep-faced animals with human bodies look on, in the distant background is a man & woman that have human heads on horse-like bodies, they are sinners. The last dramatic illustration has a black background with a warrior costumed Shakyamuni holding a long lance [Naginada] as he spears & tumbles a three-eyed demon in the night. * Vol. VI shows the aftermath of a battle with broken arrows, spears and two young women half naked--one is pulled by her Chignon and is about to be raped, the girl is limp and clearly dead, who is being hoisted by a warrior; many Naginada lances in the background. The next shows fourteen Boddhisatvas suppressing a gigantic fish as they thrash it with long poles...their hair style implies the Buddhist image. Next shows the God of Wind as he tries to evoke a Typhoon. The last shows a gigantic elephant as it carries a lotus with a small shrine on its back while being lead by attendants. *** STUNNING ART WORK & COMPOSITION BY HOKUSAI'S GENIUS: This work was inspired and superbly executed by Hokusai who was a devout Buddhist. He creates and expresses his faith by the stunning art work not found in any of his other works. Hints of this greatness were littered throughout his production of prints and books, but this book exemplifies hi greatest artistic effort and supreme skill. He remains Japan's best and most uniquely creative artist. * This is an exciting and great Buddhist work showing the stories and experiences of the Buddha as he went out into the world. An impressive and great artistic work by the old master, [1760-1849]. It is observed that near the end of Hokusai's life, this work was one of the last twenty books he illustrated. * In some way like so many Japanese of his time, at age 81 he began to think of Buddhism, and of his own life, and where he wanted to go after he died. Eighty one was indeed ancient during this time. In a way this is possibly his own testament to becoming a Buddhist, or a way to prepare himself for death All Japanese are born under Shinto Gods, but die as Buddhist, and assume Buddhist names posthumously. Hokusai had already signed his name: Manji Rojin [Manji = Swastika a Buddhist symbol, Rojin=an old man]. Hokusai first used Manji in 1836, then with the publication of this work added Rojin to his name. This is significant. This work was originally issued in 1841, but re-issued in 1845. The re-issuance is also significant, for Hokusai seldom re-issued many of his books. This is his only full study of Buddhism & clearly came at a time in his live when it was meaningful to his own future. Hokusai poured his heart and imagination out, and this is a major success. * Wonderful representations of the Life of the Buddha, of Hell, Temptation & the Eight-Fold Noble Path. * RARITY: One of Hokusai's more obscure titles, seldom found on the market. Today, this remains one of Hokusai's rarest books when found complete and in good condition. Exceptionally rare. ***** BIBLIOGRAPHY: L.         TEXAS: TEXAS. DRUCK UND VERLAG VON C. FLEMMING IN GLOGAU.

      - This engaging map depicts Texas shortly after it was admitted as state of the Union in 1845. Eastern Texas is divided into 30 numbered counties, while all major towns, rivers, and roads are depicted with impressive accuracy. In the lower left corner, is an inset map detailing Galveston Bay, Texas’s most important port. West Texas is shown to be only very sparsely settled, while the state’s modern western borders are demarcated (albeit with some inaccuracies, as the area had yet to be scientifically surveyed), with it’s former ‘Stovepipe" having been ceded to the Federal government in exchange for Washington paying off the massive debts that the Lone Star Republic accrued during its War of Independence. The map was published by Carl Flemming (1806 - 1878), a German publisher based in Glogau, Silesia (today G?ogów, Poland), who had earlier published a map of Texas while it was an independent republic. Flemming based his work on John Arrowsmith’s famous map of Texas. Flemming’s map was one of many works on Texas issued in Germany, where interest in the region was high, owing to significant German emigration and settlement there.

A fine image from the de luxe issue of Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of native-American life Wi-jun-jon, an Assiniboin chief and distinguished member of his tribe, was chosen as delegate to a Washington meeting in 1832. Travelling down the Missouri by boat, he first met Catlin in St. Louis, and his portrait was painted in his exceedingly beautiful native costume. When Catlin next saw Wi-jun-jon, it was upon the Chief's return trip from Washington, where he had exchanged his clothing for a military suit of blue broadcloth with epaulettes. So impressed was Catlin by the transformation that he painted this double portrait showing the Assiniboin chief going to Washington and returning to his home. In the image of Wi-jun-jon on his return trip he is wearing a top hat (where previously he wore a feathered headdress), smokes a cigarette (where previously he held a long pipe), leans on an umbrella and cools himself with a French-style fan.         An original design for porcelain

[Paris, 1845. Pen, ink, and watercolour. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing. The range of wares included copies of 18th-century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen and Derby, Chinese export-wares, especially armorial wares decorated with famille rose colours and mugs decorated with the Fitzhugh pattern, Delftware, Iznikware, maiolica and faience." ( Grove Dictionary of Art ).
