Gottfried August Burger
nbsp;Gottingen- Dieterich, 1844. A lovely set of Brger's Sammtliche Werke, with a portrait to frontispiece of first volume, and a facsimile to rear of fourth volume. In four volumes complete. Gottfried August Brger (December 31, 1747- June 8, 1794) was a German poet. His ballads were very popular in Germany. His most noted ballad, Lenore, found an audience beyond readers of the German language in an English adaptation and a French translation. Brger's talent for popular poetry was very considerable, and his ballads are among the finest in the German language. Besides Lenore, Das Lied vom braven Manne, Die Kuh, Der Kaiser und der Abt and Der wilde Jger are famous. His sonnets, particularly the elegies, are of great beauty. Brger revived the sonnet form in German, and his experiments in it were praised as models by Schiller, despite his severe criticism of some of Brger's more popular poems. With previous owner's bookplates to front pastedowns. Condition: In a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with some bumping and wear to extremities. Front hingeoffourthvolume slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Brightbut with some scattered foxing, more pronounced to first and last few pages in all volumes and throughout volume one. TUNBRIDGE WELLS GUIDE - COLBRAN, JOHN. PHIPPEN, JAMES, edited by.
Printed and Published by John Colbran, Bookseller, Etc. High Street; London: A. H. Baily and Co., Cornhill. 1844 [i.e. 1846], Tunbridge Wells - 12mo. 4.75 x 7.75 inches. [2] pp. advertisement tipped in + 28 pp. advertisements + x + [ii] + 353 pp. + [1] +[1] pp. publisher's advertisement + 5 pp. Addenda + [2] pp. publisher's advertisement. South Eastern Railway section has separate title page but pagination and register are continuous. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt with oval gilt title on front board. Extremities a little worn and occasional foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of William John Mercer. Illustrated by frontispiece and by wood engravings in text. This Second Edition of Colbran's New Guide For Tunbridge Wells has the date 1844 on the title page and an undated Advertisement and Preface, but refers to 'this present summer, 1846' on page one of Addenda. Essentially a reissue of the 1843 Second Edition, it has no map, only one plate (instead of fourteen) and a five page Addenda and therefore corresponds most closely to Goulden 80; with the exception that it has a brown cover and the advertisement for the Hydropathic Establishment on page 27 of the initial advertisement section is pasted over by a cancel advertisement for the same establishment as in Goulden 82 and 83 (which, however have the map and fourteen or fifteen plates). According to Goulden, too many copies were normally printed of these guides, leading to a complex sequence of cancels and reissues of the preliminaries of all editions from 1839-40 onward (see his paragraph, p. 94- … [Click Below for Full Description]

BASTARD D'ESTANG (Auguste de)]
S.l. - V. S. (AUCTION CATALOGUE: NODIER)
vii, [1], 200 pp. 8vo, cont. red morocco-backed marbled boards, flat spine gilt. Paris: J. Techener, 1844. The sale catalogue of the final library of the great bibliophile and literary figure Charles Nodier (1780-1844). Author, book collector and, since 1823, librarian of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, Nodier was the progenitor of French romantic literature, and of the kind of bibliophily practiced in France to the present day; he was also an unrivalled seller of books by auction. In 1838 he declared that God had made him rich enough five times to buy books, and five times so poor that he had to sell them again. Nice copy. 1244 lots, including MSS. While a relatively small library, this sale produced the large sum of about 64,000 fr. Bookplates of Michel Wittock and Eric Speeckaert. ❧ Brunet, IV, 89.
