GRANDVILLE (Jean-Ignace-Isidore Gérard, dit).
Paris, H. Fournier, 1844. (Carteret, III, 285). Rousseurs mais n'affectant pas les planches. Un mors légèrement fendu.

Gregg, Josiah
New York: Henry G. Langley, 1844. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with only New York in imprint), complete with large folding map. One of the most valuable and comprehensive sources for understanding pioneer life in the Great Plains and Southwest. The large folding map is the first to display the Staked Plains of Texas. Hailed as a cartographic landmark, it includes the locations of forts, military roads, and trading posts. It also identifies the Oregon Trail and Native American settlements, and traces the routes of the earlier explorers Boone, Long, Pike, and Cooke. Convinced that a journey west was necessary to restore his health, Josiah Gregg, in 1831 set out from Missouri on the first of what was to become eight journeys across the prairies. An acute observer, Gregg took careful notes of the geography and geology of the Southwest, and the attitudes and culture of the people (including particularly valuable insights into the Indians of Texas and New Mexico). Over a decade later, "Gregg began compiling his travel notes into a readable manuscript and in the summer of 1843 went to New York to secure a publisher. His Commerce of the Prairies, which came out in two volumes in 1844, was an immediate success. It went through two new editions in 1845, later a fourth and fifth edition, and in 1857 appeared in a sixth edition under a different title. The book, which also had a large sale in England and was translated into French and German, remains the cornerstone for all studies of the Santa Fe Trail" (H. Allen Anderson, Handbook of Texas Online). New York: Henry G. Lang … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Clay
In a letter to Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, he writes, “In spite of all my efforts, very few glimpses or light and hope break through the darkness of the gloomy future. I pray God that my fears may not be realized.” He asks for the mercy of God on the nation, and expresses disappointment and fatalism at his election loss “This is a world of trial and suffering, and ought you not to bear your full share for the sake of our common Country?” In April of 1844, President John Tyler submitted a treaty for the annexation of Texas as a slave state. This aroused opposition in the North, where adding additional slave states was anything but popular, and excitement in the South, which saw a golden expansion opportunity. The Whig Party, which had both a northern and southern wing, faced the specter of a split that would render it ineffectual. Its leader, Henry Clay, denounced the Tyler annexation bill and predicted that its passage would provoke a war with Mexico, whose government had never recognized Texas independence. Clay underlined his position, warning that even with Mexico's consent, he would block annexation in the event that substantial sectional opposition existed anywhere in the United States. He would not pit section against section over slavery. So in the 1844 presidential election the Whigs would need to stand squarely against acquiring a new slave state and be content to restrict their campaign platform to less divisive issues such as internal improvements and national finance. On May 2, 1844, the Whig National Convention in Baltimore nominated Clay to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forster, Charles
London, Duncan and Malcolm, 1844. 8vo. 2 vols. lxxxiii, (1), 357 pp; vi, 509 pp, (1), with two large folding frontispiece maps of the Arabian peninsula (56 cm x 41 cm), a large folding chart of inscriptions, 1 engraved plate of inscriptions, and one further folding translation of the same inscription. Lacking - apparently never bound with - the "vignette plate of Nakab el Hajar" supposed to face p. 335. Repairs to both maps. Only edition of this detailed study of place names, tribal geneaologies, and pre-Islamic inscriptions. "An attempt at the proof of the descent of the Arabs from Ishmael" (Ghani). Includes an interesting attack on Edward Gibbon's 'geographical' explanation for the rise of Islam out of Mecca; Forster denounces Gibbon's "scepticism" and "artful insinuations" by pointing out some of his errors in historical geography, meanwhile defending the claim of a Scriptural prophecy in favour of the descendants of Ishmael.
