POOR LAW COMMISSIONERS: 1844
8vo.xii, 653pp., extensive tables, original green cloth, spine spotted, sides lightly damp mottled, else very good. The extensive sections on Ireland (esp. pages 43-72, 250-460, and 518-583) are of particular interest as reflecting the state of the Poor Law administration on the eve of the Famine. The reports show widespread resistance to the collection of the Poor Law rates and under-utilisation of the workhouses. One fascinating section (p. 398-460) names a selection of the persons relieved in the different workhouses in Ireland in the first three months of 1844, giving their age, religion, occupation, marital status, health and condition of such as clothing on entry, and condition on discharge if this happened (circa 950 persons listed).

Dumas, Alexandre
Paris: Baudry, 1844. First Edition. 1/2 morocco. Near fine. 8 vols. in 4. 1st edition (in French), the authentic authorized Paris 1st printing. Scarce (OCLC lists 7 sets). A daily serialization in the newspaper Le Siècle (The Century) precedes, as do some of the multi-volume serializations by the Brussels pirates. Half French morocco, light foxing to first and last few pages, else fine, tall, wide, and complete (8 volumes, 8 half-titles, 8 contents leaves), unmarked internally by pen, pencil or stamp, and unworn externally. A superior copy of the most famous historical romance in the history of literature. If Le Chevalier D'Harmental (1842) is Dumas' first great historical novel (and it is), then Mousquetaires is the one that is most universally applauded as his best, despite La Reine Margot (1845) being equal in plotline and characters, and finer in style. Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1845) is also Mousquetaires' equal from every aspect, but it is the odd Dumas novel that is not, strictly, historical romance.

His memoir describes his unit's actions in and around New York City, Philadelphia, and parts of New Jersey and the Carolinas. circa 1844 - 1861. Original wooden pen with metal fixtures and point, measuring 7.5€ (including 1.5€ metal point), with notarized affidavit of Mary Edwards Brown, one page, 8.5€ x 11€. Sangamon County, Illinois, October 16, 1957. In full, €œThis pen was made from a twig from the Elm tree planted by Abraham Lincoln in front of his home on the corner of Eighth and Jackson streets in Springfield, Illinois.€ Fine condition. Abraham Lincoln purchased this home in 1844 and lived there until he left for Washington in February 1861. In 1887, Robert Todd Lincoln deeded the only home his father ever owned to the State of Illinois. He asked the Governor to appoint his first cousin Albert S. Edwards, son of Ninian and Elizabeth Todd Edwards, as custodian of the Lincoln home and it was done. Elizabeth was Mary Todd Lincoln€™s sister. When Edwards died in 1915, his widow, Josephine, succeeded him. Their daughter, Mrs. Mary Edwards Brown, became custodian when her mother died in 1918; she resigned in 1924. Mrs. Brown, grandniece of Mary Todd Lincoln, sold this pen to Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt (1901-1979), daughter of Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962), both great collectors of Lincolniana. In 1957, the Illinois State Historical Society Library acquired a collection of Lincoln-related items from Mrs. Brown. On May 28, 1981, Charles Hamilton sold €œThe Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt Collection of Lincolniana.€ This wooden pen was part of lot 7 of this sale.
