Lane Poole, Sophia; E. W. Lane
London: Charles Knight and Co, 1844. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg+. Octavos. Vol.1: [xi] 232pp., Vol.2: [viii] 240pp. Full purple calf with gilt ruling on the front covers, spines with gilt-stamped designs, and gilt lettering over brown labels. Marbled endpapers and edges. Gilt dentells. The work is an exposé and study of the local Egyptian culture and society during the mid-19th century, by British expatriate Sopia Lane Poole, with her brother noted Orientalist and writer E.W. Lane. The publication is organized into a series of letters from Poole, reporting on her experiences, there between 1842-1844. The idea was that she would be able to gain access to women-only areas that her brother could not, such as harems and bathhouses, in that gender-segragated society. Her work would provide the details that would enrich and expand upon the work and other writing that E.W. Lane was doing at the time on the subjects of Egypt and the middle-east. Her work is credited on the title page simply as "his sister". The book includes engraved plates throughout the two volumes depicting locations and scenes discussed, including some maps and graphs. Binding with some rubbing to corners, along edges, and to the hinges of the spine. Head & tail of spine lightly bumped. Sunning along the top edge of vol.2. Some scratches and smudging to boards. Spines reinforced, with library tape, at the interior front and back covers. Ex-libris of previous owner at interior front cover. Binding in good-, interior in very good+ condition overall. COLONIE DE METTRAY
[Paris], Imprimerie Lemercier, [1844]. [Click Below for Full Description]

Russell, Lady William (Elizabeth Anne; geb. Rawdon), engl. Adelige (1793–1874).
Karlsbad (überwiegend), London u.a. bzw. ohne Ort, 1844-67 bzw. o. J. „Lady William Russell (1793–1874) was the wife of Lord George William Russell and a notorious socialite. Elizabeth Anne was the only child of Captain the Hon. John Theophilus Rawdon (died 1808), the brother of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings. She married Russell on 21 June 1817. A beautiful and energetic cosmopolitan who had enjoyed a broad European education, Lord Byron praised her in „Beppo" as one whose bloom could, after dancing, dare the dawn. However, her outspoken Tory sympathies won her few friends among her husband's Liberal circle. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux described her as that accursed woman. She and Russell had three sons, all of whom she tutored at home, perhaps lending them a rather distinctive approach to life [.]. Benjamin Disraeli said in conversation, I think she is the most fortunate woman in England, for she has the three nicest sons" (Wikipedia). - „[.] (L. LEWIS, W.
London: A. H. Baily and Co., 1844. London: A. H. Baily and Co.,, 1844. Containing an introduction to the game, and an analysis of the various openings of games, with several new modes of attack and defence; to which are added, twenty-five new chess problems on diagrams. 2 volumes, octavo (212 x 133 mm). Contemporary purple half calf, titles lettered in gilt to black labels to spines, spines richly decorated in gilt, marbled paper sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Black and white illustrations to the text. Spines lightly faded, minor rubbing to extremities and boards; an excellent set. First edition. William Lewis (1787–1870), who ran a well-known chess school in Soho, wrote this work to expand upon and develop two of his earlier works; A Series of Progressive Lessons on the Game of Chess (1831) and A Second Series of Lessons on the Game of Chess (1832). Lewis is considered "the last and one of the best of the 'old' writers". One of the best players of his age Lewis had succeeded in 1819 to "the position of inhabitant of William de Kempelen's celebrated chess-playing automaton the "Terrible Turk", in which capacity he lost only six games out of 300 at odds of pawn and move" and "took part in the correspondence chess match between Edinburgh chess club and London chess club during 1824–8" (ODNB). With the bookplate of the successful industrialist Frank Reddaway to the front pastedowns.

Sand, George, Schriftstellerin (1804-1876).
[Paris], 2. IV. 1844. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). [Attributes: Soft Cover]
