Eastlake, Charles Lock
N.P. n.p., 1844. Two page A.L.s. from Sir Charles Eastlake to J.C. Hall, Esq., 6 January 1844, regarding payment for advertisements in the Art-Union under sanction of the Fine Arts Commission. Eastlake (1793-1865) was an artist and author known for producing the last portrait of Napoleon and "Christ Weeping over Jerusalem" (DNB VI, 330-333). Refers to bills for advertisements for May-October 1844; thus, the letter may have been written in January 1845, not 1844. The Art-Union, a monthly journal, began publication in 1839 (The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature III, 1846).

BROWNING], Elizabeth Barrett.
London: Edward Moxon, 1844. 2 volumes, octavo (170 × 104 mm).Bound c.1905 by John Grabau in dark blue morocco gilt, spines divided in six compartments by raised bands, gilt lettered in two, others with flower tools, dated at foot, sides with gilt panels with floral cornerpieces, turn-ins ruled in gilt, blue patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut; original green cloth (Carter A) bound in at end. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed solander box. Bookplates of Frank Henry Goodyear (1849–1907). A touch of rubbing to some extremities, free endpapers tanned at margins from turn-ins, an excellent copy in a fine binding. First edition, first issue, presentation copy, inscribed by the author of the collection that made Elizabeth Barrett's fame: "To Miss Heard, with the author's regards, August 1844". A superb association: Miss Heard was a friend and, in Browning's mind, a rival for the attentions of the blind classicist Hugh Stuart Boyd (1781–1848), to whom she was devoted in the earlier 1830s, very like Middlemarch's Dorothea to Casaubon. Browning confided to her diary her jealousy of all others who took up Boyd's time: "The society of that Miss Hurd [Heard] is as much valued as mine – as much! At least as much" (quoted in Forster, Elizabeth Barrett Browning: A Biography, p. 57). The collection includes two poems inspired by Boyd: "The Mournful Mother (of the Dead Blind)" and another specifically addressed to Boyd, "Wine of Cyprus". On publication Boyd's first reaction was to deprecate the tight ABAB rhyme scheme of the latter poem. Browning quickly wrote to him on 13 … [Click Below for Full Description]

ASHWORTH, Edward (English architect, 1814-1896)
Macau 1844 - Watercolour, 215 x 290 mm; ink caption at lower right; in mount. An important original watercolour by the English artist and architect Edward Ashworth who travelled through Macau and Hong Kong in the 1840s. The T'ou T'ei Temple in Patane, Macau, situated near the Luís de Camões Garden, is among the oldest and most famous of such temples. "To ti kong Small Temple nr. Macao"T'ou T'ei (Tu Di Gong / To ti kong), the 'God of Earth', held sway over all the land. There are many temples dedicated to T'ou T'ei in Macau, a god commonly worshipped for centuries on the peninsula and neighbouring islands. Among the oldest and most famous is the T'ou T'ei Temple in Patane (Pou Tai Un), of which Guillén-Nuñez has identified this Ashworth watercolour to be a rare, early view. The Patane shrine, always significant, may take on more importance given the recent proposal by Macao officials to declare the earth god Tou Tei a UNESCO World Heritage. Sitting at the junction between the Rua da Palmeira and the Rua do Patane, the temple rises up on a granite footing by the base of the Luís de Camões Garden. Wooded and hilly, this adjacent garden was formerly part of the residence of the China director of the English East India Company, and therefore known as Casa Garden. The British vacated the house and grounds in 1835, presumably due to the loss of the tea monopoly during the course of their renewal of charter in 1833. The new owner, a Portuguese, had a grotto built in the grounds in which he placed the bust of Portugal's national poet Luís de Camões, since Macau tradition argues that … [Click Below for Full Description]

ASHWORTH, Edward (English architect, 1814-1896)
Macau 1844 - Watercolour, 370 x 274 mm; ink caption at centre below; original cropping marks and marginal annotations relating to subsequent publication; now in acid-free mount to original framing dimensions. An important original watercolour of Macau. This once formed part of a series of watercolours of the European enclaves on the South China coast in the mid-1840s. The series was described in full in the Hordern House catalogue Edward Ashworth, Artist & Architect (available online at www.hordern.com).Chinese Street in MacaoThis recently-discovered drawing appears very familiar, for the reason that it was one of the images to have been turned into a lithograph (Plate 5) for Ashworth's essay 'Chinese Architecture', first published in 1851 by the Architectural Publication Society. This explains the cropping marks and side instructions to the engraver and printer around its margins. The watercolour depicts a street of Chinese shops. Concerning the published version Ashworth writes rather brusquely in his essay of: 'A street in Macao, the Chinese part of the town. These shops are quite second rate. The foolish custom of constructing segment roofs to verandahs is here displayed to disadvantage'. Presumably he is referring to the roofs to the left, drainage - if left unprotected by an additional roof - being an obvious problem with their inward returns. If we are to believe the written evidence, it seems that Ashworth drew this scene more as a visual, moral lesson in bad design rather than for any painterly or romantic compulsion, though some ethnographic fascination with such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Bibliographical references: Hocken, p. 116 - "evidently by some one opposed to the New Zealand Company."] Provenance: From the outstanding collection of Arthur Thomas Pycroft (1875-1971), which was recently sold at auction in Auckland, New Zealand (2011). ; 8vo .

DICKENS, Charles.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind stamped decoration to covers, pale yellow endpapers. Bookseller's tickets to front pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription to title page. Spine slightly faded, joints split at foot with cloth slightly peeling, very light marking to covers, rear hinge slightly splitting but still firm, occasional light foxing to plates with slight offsets, open tear to final advertisement leaf affecting text. A very good copy. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page (£ sign transposed, no priority of issue), 38 engraved plates by H. K. Browne. First edition, first issue, with the issue points listed by Smith. Dickens's biographer places Martin Chuzzlewit as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the wilful principle of a 'humour', but ones who are seen to change with the changing world, to live and grow" (Ackroyd, Dickens, p. 392). Dickens wrote to a contemporary that "I think Chuzzlewit is a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" (cited in Berard, Dickens and Landscape Discourse, p. 3). Smith I, 7; Hatton and Cleaver pp. 183-212. [Attributes: First Edition]

1844. Plate XXXIX.: 'Celebes - Gezigt op de negorij en het meer Tondano.' This plate shows a view of the hamlet and lake of Tondano on the island of Celebes / Sulawesi, part of the Sunda Islands, Indonesia. Crayon style lithograph on a vellin type paper. Description: This original lithograph originates from: 'Gezigten uit Neerlands Indie, naar de natuur geteekend en beschreven.', by C.W.M. van de Velde, published in Amsterdam, Frans Buffa en Zonen (1844-1845). A very beautiful and luxuriously illustrated work on Indonesia.Artists and Engravers: Charles William Meredith van de Velde (1818-1898) was a Dutch Navy officer, painter and mercenary. Van de Velde drew the drawings whilst he was a midshipman on the ZM Triton and later when he was working in Batavia for the Commission for the Improvement of Maps and Charts of Indonesia. He had the ambition to reproduce the beauty of Indonesian landscapes, in which he was inspired by the artists and other members of the French scientific expedition under Dumont D'Urville. Frans Buffa en Zonen was at that time the most famous lithographic workshop in Amsterdam. All 50 plates were carefully lithographed by the reknown Belgian lithographer Paulus Lauters (1806-1876), who also had worked for Goubau's lithographic printing office in Brussels. In 1836, when the Royal School for Engraving was founded by Antoine Dewasme at Brussels, Lauters was appointed professor of drawing. Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and some light foxing. Small imperfections at paper edge. Top paper edge irregular from binding. Storage location: (BG) B … [Click Below for Full Description]
