The Historical Geography of Arabia; or, the Patriarchal Evidences of Revealed Religion: a Memoir, with Illustrative Maps; and an Appendix, containing Translations, with an Alphabet and Glossary, of the Hamyaritic Inscriptions recently discovered in Hadramaut. London, Duncan and Malcolm, 1844.

1844. 8vo. 2 vols. lxxxiii, (1), 357 pp; vi, 509 pp, (1), with two large folding frontispiece maps of the Arabian peninsula (56 cm x 41 cm), a large folding chart of inscriptions, 1 engraved plate of inscriptions, and one further folding translation of the same inscription. Lacking - apparently never bound with - the "vignette plate of Nakab el Hajar" supposed to face p. 335. Repairs to both maps. Only edition of this detailed study of place names, tribal geneaologies, and pre-Islamic inscriptions. "An attempt at the proof of the descent of the Arabs from Ishmael" (Ghani). Includes an interesting attack on Edward Gibbon's 'geographical' explanation for the rise of Islam out of Mecca; Forster denounces Gibbon's "scepticism" and "artful insinuations" by pointing out some of his errors in historical geography, meanwhile defending the claim of a Scriptural prophecy in favour of the descendants of Ishmael.

Nimes, chez l'auteur, and Montpellier, M. Lebrun, 1844. Two volumes of text and one atlas in three. 8vo (text volumes 21.5 x 13.0 cm; atlas 21.6 x 15.2 cm). 714 pp. [xxviii, 320, (2); ix, 354 (1)], 74 lithographed plates (one double-sized and double present). Contemporary uniform pebbled calf over pebbled boards. Spines with gilt lines and tite. Marbled endpapers.= One of the earliest general works on the zoology of this part of France. The text volumes are not uncommon, but the plate volume, with illustrations by the author, is extremely rare. The plates mostly depict birds (53 plates). Six plates are herpetological, including lizards, turtles, snakes, frogs, toads, and salamanders. Nissen only quotes 70 plates, as follows: 1-74 without 12, 28, 70, and 73. This copy comfirms the absence of 12, 28, and 70, but it does include 14bis, 35bis, 36bis, and 73 (twice, both double-sized and dealing with bird taxidermy. One is numbered plate 70 in pencil and this seems to be an error for 74 or vice versa. In any event, the total is 73 plates, disregarding the double plate. ADDED is a very rare, perhaps unrecorded printed pamphlet with the drophead title: "Catalogue de la collection zoologique de Jean Crespon, de Nimes a vendre" (12 pp), with original blind wrappers with script title. This catalogue includes extensive lists of animals covered in the book, and much more. Again, most are stuffed birds, and eggs, but there is also an interesting section on reptiles, as well as on fish, insects, shells, jewels, weapons, etc., etc. Jules Crespon (1797-1857) was a tinker, barber, soldier, and professional taxidermist and probably this list contains his inventory as well as his scarce personal belongings and therefore may date from 1857. Old owner's stamp (a taxidermist) on the title page and half-title, some marginal spotting to plates. Two plates with a small old repair, some 12 plates cut short at the bottom with slight loss of the captions, otherwise a good set. Nissen ZBI, 989.

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

View of Jerusalem. No place, 1844.

1844. C. 280 x 180 mm. Pencil and opaque white on brown paper, signed at bottom left: "Rainer | May 1844", captioned at right: "Jerusalem gesehen vom Tempel des Salomon". Matted. Depicts the south-western corner of the Temple Mount (with Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and hinting at the recently rediscovered Robinson's Arch). Archduke Rainer, one of the most eminent figures during the rule of Emperor Franz Josef, also was a talented landscape painter and lithographer (cf. Fuchs II, 37). Although he served in political functions (he was Austria's first constitutional Minister-President from 1861 to 1865), his heart always belonged to the arts and sciences. An honorary member of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Sciences, the variously talented Archduke was one of the Habsburg family's most remarkable collectors: his Viennese library encompassed some 40,000 volumes (not counting the inherited library in Hernstein Castle), and the "El Fayum" papyrus collection acquired by him, containing a treasure of 180,000 papyri now stored in the National Library, is regarded as "the greatest of its kind in the world" (Unesco, Memory of the world, Nominated Documentary Heritage). - Rainer, son of the brother of Emperor Franz, spent his youth under the tutelage of his artistically inclined parents and excellent teachers, and it was common for the young Austrian Archdukes in the first half of the 19th century to be instructed in draughtsmanship by the great Chamber painters of the time. The Holy Land was not an uncommon station on the tour of contemporary Chamber painters: Eduard Gurk even died there in 1841 on a study tour. - The quality of the present illustration clearly surpasses that of Rainer's known student drawings (two, dated 1839, are preserved at the National Library, Bildarchiv und Fideikommissbibliothek, PK 3050 2 and 3). The mature talent of the Archduke, only seventeen years old in 1844, is especially evident in comparison with the works of other members of the Imperial family, many of which also dabbled in landscape painting (their works are preserved in the so-called Dilettante cassettes in the Albertina).

Lettre autographe signée ("Juliette"). S. l., vendredi matin 24 mai [1844].

1844. 4 pages in-8.

Lisbon, printing office of the Academia Real das Sciencias, 1844. Folio. With a woodcut Portuguese coat of arms on the title-page. Modern brown paper wrapper.

Porbase (1 copy); cf. Innocêncio IV, 96 and XII, 80 (issue in proceedings); for the author: www.academia.edu/6742675. A detailed scholarly study of ancient sources for the history and geography of the Canary Islands, attempting to prove that the Portuguese discovered them before Islamic explorers, and that Islamic geographers knew them only through classical Greek and Roman sources. The main text is followed by extensive notes from a wide variety of sources and transcriptions of numerous primary sources, some in Greek or Arabic. In passing it also provides a wealth of information about navigation in the Mediterranean and Atlantic by classical Greek and Roman and by Islamic explorers. While Macedo's claim for Malocello's discovery of the Canaries in 1336 is no longer accepted, the Islamic geographer Idrisi noted a Portuguese voyage to the Canaries already before 1154.In fine condition and wholly untrimmed, giving very large margins. The modern wrapper is slightly tattered.

New Version: Unpaginated, though 84 pages. Thin black rule border. 16mo: a - d^4 B - 2R^8 2S^6; A - D^12; A - C^12 D^6. Binding: 5-3/4" x 3-1/2". Leaf: 14 cm. A lovely example of a Hayday binding, quite uncommon with the closed fore-edge painting. Weber notes that there is "no evidence that Hayday ever made a traditional fore-edge painting", but points to a similarly-decorated Hayday Book of Common Prayer as evidence that the bindery nevertheless produced some works, usually Bibles, Psalms, etc., with closed edge decoration intermingled with Hayday's traditional heavily-gauffered edge work. The same artist who designed the closed-edge scrolls employed here is likely to have supplied the design to Samuel Bagster, as well.  This copy predates both examples mentioned by Weber, and serves as an additional example of the probable, though unconfirmed, relationship between Bagster and Hayday. EDITION ORIGINALE. ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE signé : "A Monsieur Sainte-Beuve, hommage de l'auteur. Ch. Fournel". The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories.

New York & Philadelphia: J. J. Audubon and [vols. I-V] J. B. Chevalier, [1839-]1840–1844. - 7 volumes, octavo. (250 × 147 mm). Recently rebound to style in black half morocco, gilt panelled spines with owl and eagle motifs, contemporary marbled sides, speckled edges, endleaves renewed. A few plates trimmed by the binder with concomitant shaving of a few captions (encroaching on the plate itself in only one instance). An excellent set. 500 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley and others, printed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia (plates 1-135, 151-500) or George Endicott of New York (plates 136-150), numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text. First octavo edition of Audubon's "Great National Work", the first complete edition and the first American edition, the original double-elephant folio was published in Edinburgh and London between 1827 and 1838. A very handsome set, the plates clean and fresh, of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history books published in America in the nineteenth century. representing the best of pre-Civil War American lithography and giving Audubon the opportunity finally to display his scholarship and genius to a large American audience for the first time" (Ron Tyler). The plates, here accompanied by the text for the first time, were reduced and variously modified from the Havell engravings in the double-elephant folio. Seven new species are figured and seventeen others, previously described in the Ornithological Biography but not illustrated, are pictured for the first time. Audubon may have been prompted to publish the reduced version of his double-elephant folio by the appearance in 1839 of John Kirk Townsend's rival Ornithology of the United States, or, as he writes in the introduction to the present work, he may have succumbed to public demand and his wish that a work similar to his large work should be published but "at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library". The first edition of the octavo work now represents the only realistic opportunity that exists for collectors to own an entire collection of Audubon images in a form that was overseen and approved by the great artist himself. Bennett p.5; Nissen IVB 51; Ripley 13; Ron Tyler, Audubon's Great National Work (1993) Appendix I; Sabin 2364; Zimmer p.22.

        Poems

Sm. London: Edward Moxon, 1844. Sm. 8vo, iv, 157, (2, ads)pp. Original green cloth, backstrip darkened. First edition of Patmore’s first book, very scarce in original cloth as issued. “Patmore, distressed at its reception, bought up the remainder of the edition and destroyed it. What upset him most was a cruel review in Blackwood's Magazine; but the enthusiasm of his friends, together with their more constructive criticism, helped foster his talent. The publication of this volume bore immediate fruit by causing its author to be introduced to various men of letters, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, through whom Patmore became known to William Holman Hunt, and was thus drawn into the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, contributing his poem "The Seasons" to The Germ.” The Patmore family copy, inscribed: “Derek Patmore own copy. The first published poems of Coventry Patmore, very rare, and I used this copy in preparing my Life & Times of Coventry Patmore (Constable 1949).” Also loosely inserted are two very personal and chatty letters from Coventry Patmore to a Mrs. Garnett dated 1/27/72 and July (?) 24 (no year). Ximenes notes of his copy: “ Patmore published nothing further for another nine years, but he was in time to become one of the most widely-read Victorian poets. A few copies have an errata slip, but there is none present here. A scarce title.... Hayward 263; CBEL III, 487.”

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 21. X. 1844.

1844. 1½ SS. 4to.

1844. 8vo. (2), 237, (3) pp. Later marbled boards with ms. label to spine. Marbled endpapers. The first journal co-founded by Marx, complete with all issues ever published. Contains Marx's earliest socialist publications: "Ein Briefwechsel von 1843", "Zur Judenfrage", and "Zur Kritik der Hegel'schen Rechts-Philosophie". Also includes contributions by Friedrich Engels ("Umrisse zu einer Kritik der Nationalökonomie"; "Die Lage Englands") and Moses Hess ("Briefe aus Paris"), poems by Heinrich Heine and Georg Herwegh, etc. The introduction is by Marx himself. The plan for the journal had been conceived as early as early 1843; the two editors Marx and Ruge clashed after only a year of collaboration, for which reason no more than two issues appeared. - Some browning; a few pencil markings and underlinings; contemp. ownership to title page. Extremely rare; OCLC cites only eight copies of the present original edition in libraries worldwide. Rubel 36-38. Stammhammer I, 113. Friedländer collection 6. Keller, Polit. Verlagsanstalten 62f.
