The original editions, printed in 1557, 1564, 1576, and 1565, are almost impossible to obtain.The @Relação do descobrimento da Florida is the second edition, first issue of the Gentleman of Elvas' @Relaçam verdadeira dos trabalhos que ho governador don Fernando de Souto e certos fidalgos portugueses passarom no descobrimento da provincia da Frolida @[sic], first published at Évora, 1557. The first edition is extremely rare: Alden & Landis list only four copies, at New York Public Library, John Carter Brown, the British Library, and Lisbon, Biblioteca da Ajuda. The @Relaçam was soon translated into French (Paris, 1599), and from French into English by Hakluyt (first edition London, 1609; cf. Allison 21). A Dutch translation appeared at Leiden, 1706, but the Portuguese original did not appear again until this edition of 1844 by the Academia. A second issue, with a new title-page and an added list of works in the series, appeared in 1875.The anonymous author accompanied Hernando de Soto during Soto's expedition in 1539-1543, which was the first exploration by Europeans of the southeast region of the United States. This eyewitness account, the primary source for the expedition, gives information about the journey and about Soto's relations with the Indians. He landed at Tampa Bay on the west coast of Florida and led his men north to Georgia and the Carolinas, then west to Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas (as far west as Fort Smith). Soto died in 1542 on the banks of the Mississippi at Guachoya.*** Innocêncio II, 88: listing only volumes I-III. Porbase locates volumes I-IV only at the Biblioteca Nacional da Marinha (3 copies). In 1541 Gama, son of Vasco da Gama, was dispatched to the area (via the Red Sea) by his brother Estêvão da Gama, viceroy of India. Cristóvão, with 400 musketeers and 130 slaves, was to assist the Emperor of Ethiopia (the legendary ?Prester John?) in his war against the Somali Muslim army of Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi (Ahmad Gurey). Gama defeated the Muslim army four times, but in 1542 was captured and executed. His men mounted another expedition in order to avenge his death.       Lisbon, Typ. de Vicente Jorge de Castro & Irmão, 1844. - 8°, original pink printed wrappers (tear of about 3 cm. at outer margin and lower outer corner, mostly blank, but including a part of the typographical boarder, torn away from front wrapper; lower half of spine defective; minor fraying and staining). Lower outer corner of title page somewhat soiled where piece from front wrapper is missing. Overall in very good condition. x, 62 pp., 1 folding lithographic plate. *** Second edition, augmented, of this guide to the proper building of roads. In a preface, Eschwege contrasts the present state of Portuguese roads with those elsewhere in Europe, citing statistics for roads recently constructed in the United States and various European countries, and rather hopefully calling for the establishment of a permanent national road-building commission. Following is a detailed discussion of the various materials and methods for constructing and maintaining roads. The plate illustrates cross sections of seven different kinds of roads, including ancient Roman and French roads and a "Mach-Adam" road, showing how each is constructed. The first edition was published in Lisbon the previous year and a third edition appeared in 1848.Born in Hesse, Germany in 1777, Eschwege was one of several German mineralogists and engineers brought to Portugal in 1802 to help develop the mineral resources of Portugal and Brazil. He spent the years 1807-23 in Brazil as director of gold mines and curator of the royal mineralogical cabinet. While in Brazil he established its first steelworks and undertook several scientific expeditions into the interior of Minas Geraes. His observations were later published in several important works, including @Journal von Brasilien (Weimar, 1818), @Brasilien die Neue Welt (Braunschweig, 1830), @Beiträge zur Gebirgskunde Brasiliens (Berlin, 1832) and @Pluto Brasiliensis (Berlin, 1833). Eschwege returned to Portugal in 1824 when D. João VI appointed him Intendente Geral das Minas e Metais, a post he held until 1829, when he returned to Germany rather than serve under D. Miguel. He resumed his former position in 1835, and ended his royal service as an engineer supervising the renovation of various palaces. Eschwege died in Kassel, Germany in 1855.*** Cf. Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 293-4: the first edition; "All of Eschwege's works are rare, and increasingly sought after." With the bookplate of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana on the front pastedown of each volume. A very good set. An important history of Mexico, covering the years from the first European encounter and conquest up to the period of Mexican independence. The text is supplemented by appendices containing valuable documentary information, as well as the many plates showing important figures in Mexican history. Lucas Alaman was a controversial figure in 19th-century Mexico. A scientist, politician, historian, diplomat, and writer, he was conservative by nature and expressed a nostalgia for monarchic rule. He was an influential politician in the early years of the Mexican Republic and favored a strong central government. Alaman was also instrumental in creating the Mexican national archives. Along with its comprehensiveness, Alaman's history is also notable for its favorable view of the Spanish presence in Mexico. PALAU 4573. SABIN 580.

        Les Trois Mousquetaires [The Three Muskateers]

      Paris: Baudry, 1844. First edition. First edition. Eight octavo volumes (8 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 219 x 135 mm.). 449; 329; 386; 363; 310; 278; 297; 293 pp., in each case with [4, half-title and title-page] and the table of contents additional, as in Reed. Each volume bound with the publisher's printed wrappers, front and back, in fine condition except for minor archival repairs. Laid in to volume one is a signed leaf of manuscript in Dumas hand being a quote from page 140 of his book "Péches De Jeunesse," published 1847: ".........dans l ombre où nous marchons /Dieu nous sert à nommer le mot que nous cherchons / A Dumas." Additionally there is a note in Dumas' hand, bound in at the front of volume I. Uniformly bound by David in 19th-century half navy blue morocco over marbled boards. Boards ruled in gilt and spines stamped and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Each volume with a silk page-marker. Marbled endpapers. Two volumes, with small marginal losses on wrappers, the back wrapper vol. 1 and front volume of volume 7. The back wrapper of volume 7, also bound in on a stub. A bit of foxing and minor light water stain on the top edge of vol. 3 throughout. Small previous owner's book plate on front endpaper of each volume. An additional red morocco bookplate on the front endpaper of Vol. I. All wrappers are present. Overall a pristine copy of one of the greatest historical romances of all time. This copy of the first edition of Les Trois Mousquetaires is exceptionally clean and bright, What sets it above nearly every other copy that has come up for auction in the past three decades, however, is the fact that the publisher's printed wrappers are bound in at the front and rear of each textblock. Thus in addition to being an absolutely pristine set in notably handsome bindings, the inculusion of the wrappers makes this copy exceedingly rare. "One of Dumas' most famous romances ... a thorough-going historical romance of Louis XIII. and Richelieu (period 1625-1628)" (Reed, p.169). Carteret I, 235. Reed, p.170.

      1844 - VIII-242 pp., 9 pl. Lepzig, Wilh. "After [Robert Brown], Schleiden, in his 'Contributions to Photogenesis', taking the embryonic cell as his starting-point proceeded to attempt a reconstruction of the develepment of the cell. He went seriously astray in this but he insisted on the independance of the cell and presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for exemple, is a community of cells" (PMM). "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cycloblast' or cell-nucleus" (DSB).

      Arthus Bertrand, 1844 - A rare work providing the earliest European perspective of Oregon and the west coast of America, and the most detailed book on California before American occupation. Eugène Duflot de Mofras (1810-1884) a French diplomat, was appointed attaché to Mexico and sent to investigate Alta California and the Pacific coast from 1841-42. His special mission was to explore and evaluate the commercial possibilities of California and the Oregon Territory, which was the subject of dispute between the United States and Great Britain at the time. Duflot de Mofras did not endear himself to the Spanish community in America – he reputedly stole altar wine from the house of one family he stayed with and insulted the General meant to be helping him with his passport (Beebe and Senkewicz). This did not prevent him from creating an ambitious and comprehensive work, accompanied by these meticulously charted maps. The first section contains a map of the Pacific Ocean with the area of America under dispute outlined in red, and plans of ports in Mexico. The second section contains plans of ports in California. The third section contains plans of ports in Alaska and Canada. The fourth section contains prints of Native American culture, including the mummified head of a three-year-old child, and goods including basketwork and weapons. It also has a plan and view of the St Luis Rey Mission, named after the French thirteenth century Saint-King Louis IX, founded by Franciscan monks and surviving to this day. The fifth part contains the standout piece of cartography: the large folding map of the west coast, which “made these western regions known in European official circles” (Wheat). It covers the area from Mount St Elias to Acapulco and reaches as far inland as Austin. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pages 91-110 in this volume are the report of Govern Ford on his visits to Carthage and Nauvoo in the month preceding and on the day of the murders by the mob that killed Smith and his brother Hyrum at the jail on June 27, 1844. Ford recounts the speech he gave that day at Nauvoo. He explains his actions and gives opinions on what had led to such tensions surrounding the Mormon colony of Nauvoo, along with providing his recommendations on the still standing Nauvoo militia. Ford was critcized by both sides for not doing more in the events before and after Smith's death but defended his actions citing the state's limited power in the situation. The report is dated December 23, 1844. The governor's message is rare even in its more common pamphlet edition, and no copies of this Senate Journal are found in auction records or on OCLC. Flake 4195. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall; 469 pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        ALS ("Béranger"). Paris, 3. XI. 1844.

      1844. 8vo (205 x 130 mm). 3 pp. on a single bifolium. Address panel to verso. To the wife of a Parisian police official, making enquiries about the female perpetrator of an acid attack on an unfaithful lover. A very intriguing letter in which the poet, chansonnier and champion of social justice asks for information from the wife of one Brissot-Thivars, employed by Préfecture de Police, on behalf of the family of a young girl imprisoned at St. Lazare for having thrown vitriol in the face of an unfaithful lover. Béranger seems sympathetic, and had obviously been approached by the girl's family as a result of his reputation as a friend to the unfortunate, especially they young. He writes that the girl, the daughter of a General who had been cruelly treated by the Restoration, and who was previously of good character finds herself imprisoned with common prostitutes. Béranger seems to be taking advantage of his friend Madame Brissot-Thivars' connections, and requests discretion, asking that his name is not mentioned in connection with the affair and that M. Brissot-Thivars knows nothing of his enquiry. He writes that if she cannot help she may simply burn the letter. This "crime passionnel" of vitriol-throwing reached epidemic proportions in Paris later in the century and caused major social concern. - Four original folds, slight staining, but clean overall. Provenance: Liepmannssohn, Berlin.

        A Great Country's Little Wars; or, England, Affghanistan, and, Sinde;

      ondon- John W. Parker, 1844 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce first edition of Lushington's work on the First Anglo-Afghan War. Incribed by the author. First Edition. Collated: Complete with two maps (1 folding) and four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Henry Lushington was an English colonial administrator and chief secretary to the government of Malta. He wrote several works, particularly musing ongovernment and military action. The First Anglo-AfghanWar was fought between the British East India Company and Afghanistan between 1839 to 1842. Many political and public voices criticised the war as rash, and it is famous now for the loss of 4,500 British and Indian soldiers to Afghan tribal fighters. Lushington's work is the reprinting in book form of two articles published in the immediate aftermath of the war. It is at once both an account and critique of the war, with which Lushington hoped to prevent repetition of similar mistakes and decisions in the future. With a presentation inscription by the author to 'Archdeacon Venables, May 1844'. Inscribed to Richard Venables (1775-1859) Archdeacon of Camarthen. Condition: In original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing. Fading to spine and extremities, with wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although strained in places. Pages bright and generally clean withlight scattered spotting in places. Folding map clean bright and intact. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Large quarto, modern three-quarter blue morocco gilt, marbled boards. $2200.Second edition, "greatly enlarged," of this classic catalogue of mollusca, with 62 full-page plates of shells (nine hand-colored), drawn by Thomas Brown and engraved by William Home Lizars.Having produced paintings for the first European edition of Wilson's American Ornithology (1831, later published as separate prints in 1834) and having edited Oliver Goldsmith's History of the Earth and Animated Nature (1832), artist Thomas Brown cemented his career as a naturalist in 1838 by accepting the position of curator of the Manchester Museum. He was later elected fellow of the Linnean Society and president of the Royal Physical Society. First published in 1827 (with only 53 plates), this enlarged edition of Brown's splendid catalogue of mollusks of the British Isles contains 62 engraved plates executed by William Home Lizars, whose works, including those for Audubon's Birds of America and many editions of Sir Walter Scott, "rank among the finest of the early 19th century" (Greg Peters). Lizars had begun in his father's print shop by producing bookplates and notes for local banks, as well as views for publications catering to the Scottish tourist trade. "He constantly experimented with new techniques and, in 1821, perfected a method of etching away the background of a copper plate to produce a relief surface similar to that in a wood engraving" (Edinburgh University Library). Plates generally very clean with only an occasional spot of foxing. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
