        The Highlands of Aethiopia.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1844 - 3 volumes octavo. Original terracotta finely-diapered cloth, title gilt to spines, blind stamped compartments to the spine and panels to the boards, cream surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, corners bumped, spines sunned and with some minor restoration, endpapers slightly discoloured, pale foxing to the plates, light toning, two clean tears to the map professionally repaired, a very good set. Front pastedowns with the ownership inscriptions of the Rev. Thomas Pyne who in 1840 was given responsibility for the guardianship of two princes from the Gold Coast, (John) Ossoo Ansah, son of the reigning king of Ashanti, and his cousin (William) Quanti Massah, the princes had been sent as hostages under a peace treaty of 1831 between the Ashantis and the British government. Pyne's archive at SOAS shows his considerable interest in African affairs. Lithographic frontispiece to each, those in volumes I and II single-tint studies after Bernatz, that in volume III a hand-coloured portrait of Saheela [Sahla] Selassie from a sketch by Harris, chromolithographic dedication leaf and a large folding map to volume I, title-page vignettes. First edition. A soldier of the Bombay Army, Harris has first travelled out to Africa in 1836 for his health. Meeting Richard Williamson, a like-minded Bombay civil servant, on the voyage out, Harris immediately set of on a shooting expedition to the interior. They "started by ox-wagon from Algoa Bay, by way of Somerset and the Orange River, and travelled in a north-easterly direction until they reached the regions of the formidable Matabele chief Mzilikaze. He proved friendly, and permitted the travellers to return to the Cape by a new and previously closed route by summer of 1837" (ODNB). He returned to India becoming field engineer for the Sind army in 1838, and in 1840 he was made superintending engineer to the southern provinces. In 1841 he was sent in charge of the mission to open trade relations with the then virtually unknown Christian kingdom of Shoa in the highlands of Ethiopia. He returned to England with a commercial treaty with that state, and was knighted for his services in 1844, publishing his account in the same year. "The journey through the hinterland of the country is described in great detail, as are the cultures of the various cities that were visited. While this is truly an epic of travel and exploration, there are two sporting incidents of note with a huge buffalo bagged near the Casam River and elephant taken in Galla country" (Czech). Abbey 290; Czech p. 72.

The New South Wales Government Gazette... Vol. 16... The New South Wales Government Gazette... Vol. 16

Sydney: W.J. Row, 1st July - 31 December, 1844. Thick folio, a few gatherings foxed else fine in worn contemporary half calf with gilt-lettered labels. A fine collection of the New South Wales Government Gazette for July to December 1844, in an original binding by William Moffitt, a free convict and Sydney's first bookbinder of note. Examples of Moffitt's work are scarce. Although worn, this handsome yet utilitarian binding of half calf with marbled paper boards retains some of the gilt tooling of the spine and the original lettered labels.William Moffitt was the first skilled Sydney bookbinder, rising from humble beginnings as an assigned convict. In July 1827 Moffitt arrived in New South Wales aboard the Guildford and set up his own shop in 1830. Clearly an entrepreneurial and capable man, Moffitt amassed considerable wealth from land speculation during this turbulent time in the colony's history. He took on several apprentices who later became successful bookbinders in their own right, notably Charles Harwood and George Springate.Unlike the rapid advent of decorated and lettered cloth case binding in Britain, Australia remained relatively immune to large scale industrialization of book production, with a reliance on older hand-production binding techniques through most of the nineteenth-century. It was not until the 1880s that the larger publishers introduced mechanized case binding. William Moffitt was one such example of a binder reliant upon traditional methods who diversified into the hand binding of stationery items such as logbooks and ledgers. Eventually this aspect of the business eclipsed the binding of printed books, and Moffitt's business was eventually amalgamated into the highly successful stationers and booksellers W. C. Penfold. Early Australian bookbinders often had a reasonable education but written memoirs are scant and binders labels (such as the finely engraved example seen on the endpaper of this volume) provide valuable evidence of their activities and workmanship.

Journals Kept by Mr. Gully and Capt. Denham During a Captivity in China in the Year 1842. Journals Kept by Mr. Gully and Capt. Denham During a Captivity in China in the Year 1842

London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Octavo, single lithographic plate reproducing the gaol calendar, a fine copy in late nineteenth century burgundy half morocco with gilt spine lettering; bookplate of James A. Garland. Aftermath of the first Opium War. Scarce account based on the journals of two British prisoners detained by the Chinese authorities following a shipwreck off Taiwan in 1842. Existing tensions during the early 1840s were exacerbated following the wreck of two British merchant traders in southern waters, the Ann and Nerbudda. The surviving crews were captured by Chinese authorities and marched to Tainan; after several months captivity many of the officers and supercargo were publically executed. This book prints the journal and secret correspondence between two survivors of the Ann, British citizen Robert Gully and Captain Denham. Gully, described in the preface as 'a fine, gallant and excellent-hearted young man', had previously distinguished himself during the capture of Ningpo in 1841-1842. He shipped with the Ann to Macao, and although his status as an opium merchant remains ambiguous, this account vigorously defends the trade and prerogatives of British merchants in China while condemning the treatment of Gully and Denham at the hands of Chinese authorities. From the library of James A. Garland (1870-1906), Wall Street financier and father of Charles Garland (who famously disbursed his considerable inheritance through philanthropic donations).

It tells the story of bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from supernatural visits by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.Dickens divides the book into five chapters, which he labels "staves", that is, song stanzas or verses, in keeping with the title of the book. The tale begins on a "cold, bleak, biting" Christmas Eve exactly seven years after the death of Scrooge's business partner Jacob Marley. Scrooge, an old miser, is established within the first stave as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!" He hates Christmas, calling it "humbug"; he refuses his nephew Fred's Christmas dinner invitation, and rudely turns away two gentlemen who seek a donation from him to provide a Christmas dinner for the poor. His only "Christmas gift" is allowing his overworked, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off with pay ?" which he does only to keep with social custom, Scrooge considering it "a poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every 25th of December!"Background:Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 ?" 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular.Dickens began writing his "little carol" in October, 1843 finishing it by the end of November in time to be published for Christmas with illustrations by John Leech. Feuding with his publishers, Dickens financed the publishing of the book himself, ordering lavish binding, gilt edging, and hand-colored illustrations and then setting the price at 5 shillings so that everyone could afford it. This combination resulted in disappointingly low profits despite high sales. In the first few days of its release the book sold six thousand copies and its popularity continued to grow. The first and best of his Christmas Books, A Christmas Carol has become a Christmas tradition and easily Dickens' best known book.Condition:Condition is Very Good.  Some wear to edges, bumped front corners/lesser to back corners, some lightening/browning near edges of boards, little wear to top/bottom cloth, May 28th 1871 inscription Ms. or Mr. Eliot Hubbard with love of Uncle Waldo to first end page, some light blemishing in beginning, and margins here and there, pgs. 14/15 are a little heavier, but majority are very good, hinges/text block are very good for 170 years old!!!

Beiträge zur Botanik. Erster Band (all published).

      - Leipzig, Verlag von Wilh. Engelmann, 1844, 8°, VIII, 242 pp., 9 lith. plates, ccontemp. card board; Schleiden's personal copy. First Edition - Schleiden's copy, with his ownership stamp on the title and his bookplate! - Fine copy of Schleiden's collected papers reprints 14 previously published papers, including his "Beiträge zur Phytogenesis". - Acting upon his belief that plants represented aggregates of individual cells, Schleiden published a study of the vegetable cell, beginning with the nucleus (discovered by Robert Brown in 1832), and proceeding to a discussion of its role in the formation of cells. Schleiden's "watch-glass" theory of cell formation was wrong-he believed that they crystallized in a formative liquid containing sugar, gum and mucous-but it focused attention on the problem of cell reproduction and provided a testable hypothesis. More significant was Schleiden's insistence that plants consisted entirely of cells and cell products. - Garrison-Morton 112.         The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT

1844. .. With Illustrations by Phiz. London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Original blind-stamped blue cloth. First Edition in book form, published immediately at the conclusion of the 20-in-19 monthly serial parts (issued from January 1843 through July 1844). Included are the forty plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), two of which had appeared in each part. CHUZZLEWIT was the first of Dickens's novels to lose readers during serialization; when the publisher Hall accordingly suggested Dickens's fees should be reduced (though it never happened), it created a rift that was not bridged until Chapman and Hall published A TALE OF TWO CITIES in 1859.~This copy is in the primary cloth binding for MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, blue horizontally-ribbed blind-stamped cloth. The errata leaf is in the usual 14-line state; the vignette title page has "100L" printed thus and has seven studs along the top edge of the trunk (Smith's state "1" -- one of three states, without precedence).~The volume's condition is very good-plus -- unusually attractive externally, with just some subtle soil. The volume is deftly re-cased, but without any newer cloth being added and preserving the original (albeit cracked) pale-yellow endpapers. The "Phiz" plates exhibit some browning and/or foxing in the margins, but there is very little on the images themselves. That said, there is scarcely any of the typical shelf-wear, and the spine gilt remains quite bright -- clearly a better-looking copy than most. All of the thick octavo-format Dickens novels (the others being PICKWICK PAPERS, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, DOMBEY AND SON, DAVID COPPERFIELD, BLEAK HOUSE and LITTLE DORRIT) are difficult to obtain in presentable original condition, as the bulk of text was too heavy for the simple cloth bindings; however in our experience MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT (incidentally the only one of the seven to be bound in blue rather than olive-green cloth) is one of the toughest. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Smith I pp 63-67.

Extraits des auteurs et voyageurs qui ont ecrit sur la guyane

Paris: Imprimerie de Bethune and Plon, 1844 xcii+616 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in contemporary three quarter calf with black spine label and gilt lettering. Publications de la Societe d'Etudes pour la colonisation de la Guyane francaise, Number 4. The bibliographical catalogue occupies pages 579-616, and contains descriptions of 240 works on Guiana. Sabin 56097. First edition.French Guiana (French: Guyane française, officially Guyane) is an overseas department (French: département d'outre-mer, or DOM) of France, located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations, Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs, French Guiana is also an overseas region of France, one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Louis XV sent 12,000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.[2] Its infamous Île du Diable (Devil's Island) was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70,000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939.[3] In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French, though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817. A border dispute with Brazil arose in the late nineteenth century over a vast area of jungle, leading to the short-lived pro-French independent state of Counani in the disputed territory and some fighting between settlers, before the dispute was resolved largely in favor of Brazil by the arbitration of the Swiss government. In 1946, French Guiana became an overseas department of France.Condition:Front inner hinge separated, rubbing to hinges and corners else a very good copy.

        A CHRISTMAS CAROL

1844. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1844. Preliminary ad leaf dated July 1844. Original cream printed wrappers. First American Edition. There has long been an open question as to whether Harper's edition or Carey & Hart's edition came out first in America. Carey & Hart's is certainly the lovelier of the two -- bound in cloth decorated in gilt, with almost-exact facsimiles of the English edition's illustrations (some in color). Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography of Dickens's American editions will assert that this Harper edition is the earlier -- and it stands to reason that Harper's, poorly printed in double columns, unillustrated, and sewn into cheap wrappers, was able to beat the finely-produced illustrated Carey & Hart production onto the streets.~This copy has the ad leaf preceding the title leaf, and the Preface on the verso of the title page, which Podeschi says indicates the second state (in the first, the title and the Preface are on separate leaves with blank versos, and there is no ad leaf); the ad leaf is dated "July, 1844" and does mention this title (-- for sale at 6-1/4 cents -- though the front wrapper says 6 cents even). Also, the inside rear cover is dated "August, 1844," and the front inside cover and rear cover are dated "October, 1844." In our experience, almost all copies that occasionally come onto the market are in this "second state."~Condition is very good-plus, with a few nicks (but scarcely any loss) in the edge of the wrappers, plus a few small faint stains and an early owner's name stamped onto the front wrapper. Though not a fine copy, it is the best of the four copies we have been able to offer over the course of our 35 years in business. Podeschi (Yale) A81 #3 (with blue wrapper); not in Carr (the VanderPoel collection at Texas). Housed in a (slightly worn) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

Ancient National Airs of Gwent and Morganwg; being a collection of Original Welsh Airs,

Llandovery. Soho Square. London.: William Rees. D'Almaine and Mackinlay In contemporary embossed cloth, corners and edges a little bumped and worn, some repairs, gilt title and harp to upper board. New brown cloth spine, printed titles to paper label. Internally, yellow endpapers, stamped Llandaff address to fep, stamped name (EL Williams - Seren Cymru) to to and dedication leaf, [5], 6-86 pp, printed by W Rees, Llandovery, not dated but 1844 per BL. Includes a 2 page subscribers list. Williams, (Maria) Jane, singer and compiler of traditional Welsh music competed at Abergavenny, but there are conflicting accounts of her victories. She probably won in 1838 for an arrangement of a Welsh air for four voices, and a year earlier for the best collection of unpublished Welsh music. This was to be published as Ancient Airs of Gwent and Morgannwg (1844), the collection of folk-songs for which she is best remembered. She was considered an authority by her contemporaries and was consulted by them on matters pertaining to folk-songs, but her authority has been challenged by modern scholars. See ODNB.

        A CHRISTMAS CAROL

1844. In Prose. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. With Illustrations by John Leech. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1844. Original blind-stamped rose-brown cloth with gilt-decorated spine. Early American edition of Dickens's classic tale about Ebenezer Scrooge. Carey & Hart issued this as a reproduction of Dickens's personally-supervised London edition: the gilt spine decoration is the same, the title page is in red and blue, and the Leech illustrations are faithfully reproduced (four in color, as in the London edition).~Though this is frequently referred to as the first American edition, Harper's 1844 edition undoubtedly preceded it onto the streets (something that will soon be confirmed in Walter Smith's bibliography): the Harper edition was produced quickly and cheaply, with no illustrations and bound just in wrappers -- in other words, they were going for speed, not quality.~In this copy, the plate "Mr. Fezziwig's Ball" serves as frontispiece; in some copies, "Marley's Ghost" does -- no priority. It is in rose-brown cloth; Podeschi cites copies in blue or in purple, but not in this color.~This is a very good-plus copy (spine slightly tanned as always with this color cloth, very light wear at the spine ends, early penned name on the front flyleaf). The binding is quite clean, the only noteworthy foxing is on the (original) endpapers, and the color plates remain remarkably bright. The first English edition consisted of 6,000 copies; though it is unknown how many copies of Carey & Hart's American edition were printed, we easily see 20 English copies for every Carey & Hart copy -- which if true would indicate an American edition of only 500 copies. Podeschi (Yale) A80 (six copies, various colors of cloth and placement of frontispiece; Yale has 24 first issue English copies); Carr (UTexas) B362; Wilkins p. 38.
