General view of Las Monjas at Uxmal

Published by Vizetely Brothers & Co, London 1844 - Tinted lithograph. This beautiful and rare lithograph is one of the first and primary visual records of the rediscovery of Mayan civilization. "In the whole range of literature on the Maya there has never appeared a more magnificent work" Von Hagen. Frederick Catherwood was a British architect and artist with a strong interest in archaeology. These combined talents led him to accompany the American traveler and explorer, John Lloyd Stephens, on two trips to the Mayan region of southern Mexico in 1839 and 1841. These explorations resulted in Stephens' two famous works, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan and Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. These immensely popular works, foundation stones in Mayan studies, were both illustrated by Catherwood and inspired him to undertake the series of larger lithographs. The Views. was produced in London, where Catherwood recruited Andrew Picken to translate his originals onto stone. Three hundred copies were produced. "Catherwood belongs to a species, the artist-archaeologist, which is all but extinct. Piranesi was the most celebrated specimen and Catherwood his not unworthy successor" (Aldous Huxley). Las Monjas (the nunnery) at Uxmal was named by the Spanish, who were reminded by the layout and care to detail of Spanish cloisters. It may have been a Mayan place of worship, possibly a cemetery. It is comprised of a quadrangle, perfectly proportioned, and embellished with sculpted friezes rich in Mayan religious imagery. Uxmal, an ancient Mayan city, in present-day Yucatan, Mexico is in the town of Santa Elena. Sabin 11520; Tooley 133 (gives a list of the plates); Von Hagen, Frederick Catherwood (1950), pp.91-95; Palau 50290; Groce & Wallace, p.115; Hill, p.47.

        THE OHIO COON CATCHER

Columbus, Oh. 1844.. Four issues (7, 8, 10, 12), each 4pp. Large folio. Dbd. Old folds, with some separation at folds. A few small tears; small repairs to issue 12. Light soiling and foxing. Good. Democratic Party campaign newspaper, supporting James K. Polk for president. Published by Samuel Medary, the editor and publisher of the OHIO STATESMAN, this paper published twelve issues, Aug. 7 to Nov. 16, 1844 - from the time of Polk's nomination to his election. Medary, serving as the head of the Ohio delegation to the Democratic National Convention, led the nomination of Polk as the party's candidate. Full of anti- Whig and pro-Democrat sentiment and propaganda, the COON CATCHER promotes Polk's candidacy with news items, political opinion, testimonials of reformed Whigs, poems, and cartoons. One notable illustration shows a woodcut of fat and healthy "Coon of 1840" opposite a lean and sickly "Coon of 1844." The text around these two images reads, in part: "The coon of the present time is a different critter from what it was four years since. Then, plump and fat - now, it is leaner than any of Pharoah's lean kine. Its attenuated frame, consumptive and haggard look, is caused by the resistless tide of democratic Polk juice, which is spreading itself with an invigorating effect upon the body politic." The final issue contains the announcement of Polk's election, with the returns from the polls. Fewer than twenty locations for issues in OCLC.

I monumenti dell' Egitto e della Nubia. Disegnati dalla spedizione scientifico-letteraria Toscana in Egitto.

Pisa, Niccolò Capurro, 1832-1844. - Royal folio (747 x 554 mm). 3 atlas vols. (without text vols.). Half-title, 395 engr. plates (of which 137 are in original hand colour). Contemp. green half morocco on seven raised bands with giltstamped cover borders, double giltstamped spine labels and elaborately gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. The monumental, extremely rare atlas volumes of the "Monumenti" of Ippolito Rosellini (1800-43), the father of Italian Egyptology and one of the field's leading scholars of his age. The plates, many of which are splendidly coloured, depict Egyptian murals, architectural views, and plans of tombs. The massive set, divided into antique, profane, and religious monuments, was the result of an Egyptian expedition undertaken in 1828 with his teacher and friend Jean François Champollion, jointly funded by King Charles X of France and Leopold II of Tuscany (to which latter ruler the entire work is dedicated). Together with the works of Champollion and Lepsius, this is one of the pre-eminent coloured-plate publications of the 19th century. - A little browned in places (more pronounced near end of 3rd vol.); two plates creased in the blank margins. Embossed library stamp of the Wigan Free Public Library on title page: one of the many luxury publications acquired by the mining town of Wigan in Lancashire in the late 1870s after the local surgeon Joseph Taylor Winnard (d. 1873) had bequeathed the sum of £12,000 to the municipal library. The library's most prominent visitor is probably George Orwell, who researched his "Road to Wigan Pier" there in 1936. - Extremely rare; a single complete copy with all plates in auction records of the last decades (Sotheby's, 10 May 2011: £169,250). Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 182. Gay 2218. Hiler 759. Brunet IV, 1393. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Manuscript log of the U.S.S. Delaware, kept by Robert Storer, during her final cruise home from the Mediterranean]

1844 - Quarto. 62pp. Original brown cloth. Cloth moderately soiled and stained. Light dampstaining to some of the text. An American Navy Cruise in the Mediterranean Manuscript log book of the U.S.S. Delaware, kept by seaman Robert B. Storer, during the ship's final voyage. The U.S.S. Delaware was launched in October 1820. She spent most of her active duty cruising in the Mediterranean, where she served in the interests of American commerce and diplomacy in that area, though she also spent several years stationed in Brazil, patrolling the coasts of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina to represent American interests during political unrest in those countries. She began her final voyage to the Mediterranean in February 1843, setting out from Rio de Janeiro. This log covers the last three months of the Delaware's active service, documenting her return voyage from the Mediterranean to Norfolk. She arrived home in March 1844, and was still at the naval yard in 1861, when she was set afire with other U.S. ships in order to keep them from falling into Confederate hands. The log begins with the ship at anchor in Mahon harbor, off Minorca in the Mediterranean. Storer keeps details of provisioning the ship and readying to sail for first 12 days of January. As is standard with ship's logs, he records speeds, winds, and weather conditions, as well as the positioning of the sails. Everyday events such as inspecting the crew or holding "divine service" on Sundays are noted, as well, as are sightings of other ships' sails and exchanging colors with passing vessels. The Delaware sights the coast of Spain and moves into the Atlantic around the third week in January; on February 2, crew member Jacob Lawrence, a marine, dies (though Storer does not say from what), and his funeral service is held the next day, and Lawrence's body is committed to the deep. Also of note, the Delaware investigates a wreck on Feb. 15: "At 7.45 hauled up the courses, hauled down the jib and laid the main and mizen topsails to the mast, and sent a boat to board the wreck. At 8.15 the boat returned from the wreck; discovered her to be the English Hermaphrodite Brig 'Halifax' of 'Halifax,' loaded with lumber, water logged and foremast sawed off, nothing living on board." The rest of the voyage is uneventful and relatively smooth, and the Delaware sights the Cape Henry light house on March 4th. The last few days are recorded as the ship is anchored at Hampton Roads, including a salute to the passing of former Secretary of the Navy, Thomas Gilmer, who died on February 28th.         Eigenh. Aphorismen.

[Wohl Paris, 1830er/1840er Jahre].. 1 S. Qu.-8vo (210 x 110 mm, Fragment)..

Plans and Maps to the History of the Waterloo Campaign

London: T. & W. Boone,, 1844. Folio contemporary red half morocco, red linen boards (boards 569 × 458 mm), red morocco patch label to the upper board, double fillet gilt panel enclosing a dotted and an attractive floral gilt roll, with the title "Battles of Waterloo, & Quatre Bras", marbled endpapers. 11 engraved maps with dispositions in colour, stub mounted and laid down on linen. A little rubbed and soiled, but now carefully restored on spine and boards, hinges reinforced with linen, some finger-soiling to the maps, occasional marginal hygroscopic damping and some mild surface erosion to the first four, but no loss to the maps themselves, overall very good. First edition of the extremely uncommon and intriguing series of maps published to accompany Ciboria's painstakingly researched account of the battle. A recognised authority on surveying and plan-drawing, having published widely on the subject, Siborne was commissioned in 1830 to produce a minutely accurate scale model of the field of Waterloo. "He lived for eight months at the farm of La Haye-Sainte on the field of battle, and made a survey of the whole ground, upon which he based his model. The execution of this work occupied some years, as Siborne devoted to it only such time as his professional duties permitted. In 1833 the progress of the work was interrupted by the refusal of the new ministry to allot funds for it. Thrown upon his own resources he continued the work until its completion in 1838, at a cost of nearly £3000" (ODNB). The model stirred controversy, revealing as it did the vital intervention of Blücher's 48,000 Prussians; Wellington pointedly absented himself from the exhibition at the Egyptian Hall, and Siborne failed to recoup costs. He subsequently made a model of a smaller portion of the field on a larger scale to show the decisive charge of Anglesey's cavalry and Picton's infantry, exhibiting both side by side, and publishing his guide to the New Waterloo Model. "Having amassed much information from surviving officers on the battle and the entire campaign, Siborne in 1844 published his two-volume History of the War in France and Belgium in 1815 (with folio atlas); it long remained a standard work". The maps were engraved by Freebairn using Bates's Anaglyptographic Process a "device, which was a development of the ruling machine, [and] converted objects with raised surfaces, such as coins, medals, and reliefs, into patterns of printed lines which suggest the contours of the original". This process was applied to Ciboria's modelling of the ground, and produced the most remarkable contour maps of the field. Attractive contemporary military book label of C.T.C. Luxmoore to the front pastedown. The Rev. Luxmoore, a native of Okehampton in Devon and the vicar of Guilsfield, Montgomery, was almost certainly a kinsman of Lt. Thomas Coryndon Luxmoore who served with the Royal Engineers in Belgium, although he is not listed as having seen action at Waterloo (see Glover, Waterloo Archive, I, p.155).

St.-Pétersbourg, 1844. folio, (8) + 152pp., complete with the half-title, some foxing at beginning and end, original boards with paper spine labels, the labels and extremities of boards with areas of wear. A very good copy sometime in the Bibliothek Der Königlichen Sternwarte, Berlin-Babelsberg> with its 19th century ink-stamp on half-title and early 20th century stamp on title-page. First edition. One of the scarcest of Struve's scientific publications and in a sense a study ancillary to his principal work of astronomical observations. Struve (1793-1864) is remembered by scientific historians for his contributions to geodesy and double-star astronomy. His noted Stellarum Compositarum Mensurae Micrometricae> was published in 1837. Struve organised and became the first Director of the Pulkova Observatory in 1839, appointed to the post by Emperor Nicholas I. He remained in post until 1858, when his son Otto succeeded him. It was while there that Struve, in addition to his stellar work, left new and accurate determinations of the constants of aberration, precession, and nutation. He also carried out fundamental geodetic measurements from the Danube to the Arctic Ocean. The present study is a scientific contribution to a better resolution of chronometric accuracy. He notes that, although for at least 20 years there had been rapid advances in chronometric accuracy, there were still technical obstacles to overcome. His Pulkova-Altona expedition was devised to advance the study of time and longitude measurement and to begin to resolve the complexities of absolute time. He used a range of clocks and mobile chronometers and set up temporary testing stations. The present report was published for the scientific community.
