Owen Jones & Jules Goury
London 1843 - This folio tinted lithograph is from Owen Jones & Jules Goury's "Views on the Nile: Cairo to the Second Cataract". The work was published in London by Graves and Warmsley in 1843. The lithographs were drawn on stone by George Moore. --- There was a 19th century renewal of interest in Egyptian culture, that led Jones and Goury to travel down the Nile. They illustrated the ruins of ancient Egypt, and great influenced Victorian design. --- "Mr. Owen established his reputation as an architectural draughtsman by his superb work on the Alhambra; and his coadjutor Jules Goury was a very accomplished artist, who studied architecture, that of Egypt in particular, thoroughly., The size of the plates is favourable for conveying an idea of the gigantic scale of Egyptian art." (The Spectator. Vol. 16. London, 1843, p. 572). --- The work is in excellent condition overall. There is some faint smudging or handling at the edges. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

ALLOM, Thomas, illus.) WRIGHT, George Newenham.
London: Fisher, Son, & Co., [1843] - 4 volumes in 1, quarto in half-sheets (265 x 204 mm). Contemporary dark green calf, red morocco label, titled "Allom's China" in gilt on the front board, narrow low bands with dotted roll, compartments with stylised floral lozenges, scrolled foliate corner-pieces, wide panelling in gilt and blind to both boards, floral edge-roll, all edges gilt, scrolled foliate roll to the turn-ins, yellow surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed and with some soft score marks to the boards, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, label slightly chipped, plates lightly foxed, as usual, text block lightly browned and occasionally spotted, but overall a very good, clean and highly presentable copy. 4 steel-engraved vignette title-pages and 124 similar plates after Thomas Allom, 4 of them bound as section frontispieces and tissue-guarded. First edition of "the best-known nineteenth-century work" on China (ODNB). Published the year after the First Opium War ended, Allom's China is concerned mainly with areas of British interest in southern China, including Hong Kong, Macao, Canton and Hunan, though there are also many attractive views of Peking. Allom (1804-1872) originally trained as an architectural draughtsman at the Royal Academy Schools, but "it is upon about 1500 designs for albums of topographical steel-engravings that his more prominent and lasting reputation rests. This work, initially undertaken to support himself as a student, became his principal occupation between 1828 and 1845, and during these years he made extensive sketching tour … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAPLACE, Pierre Simon, Marquis de.
Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1843-1847. <p>First edition, a beautiful copy bound in contemporary red morocco with the arms of Napoleon III, of the collected works of Laplace, comprising his principal contributions to celestial mechanics and probability theory. The distinguished American historian of science Charles Gillispie considers Laplace to be "among the most influential scientists in all history" (<em>Pierre-Simon-Laplace, 1749-1827</em>: <em>A life in exact science</em> (1997), p. vii). "Laplace gave the world three great works: the <em>M</em><em>écanique C</em><em>éleste</em>, the <em>Exposition du Syst</em><em>ème du Monde</em>, and the <em>Théorie Analytique des Probabilités</em>. Besides these he presented numerous important memoires before the French Academy and the Academy of Sciences. Laplace's works were first published in seven volumes by the French government in 1843" (Richeson, p. 73). This national edition of the works of the 'Newton of France' was the result of laws passed by the two legislative chambers in 1842 and 1843, which authorised a special budget of 40,000 francs for publication. Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Napoleon III (1808-73), was President of the French Second Republic (1848-52) and Emperor (1852-70) during the Second French Empire. He succeeded Louis XVIII, under whose rule Laplace had been elevated to the title of Marquis.</p> <p>The <em>Trait</em><em>é de M</em><em>écanique C</em><em>éleste</em>, which was first published in 1799-1825, codified and developed the theories and achievements of Newton, Euler, d'Alembert, and Lagrange. Chapman & Hall. 1843 Contemp. half dark brown morocco; sl. rubbing but a good-plus copy. Armorial bookplate of Dorest County Museum & Library.Crimes Célèbres, 1839-41. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, translating 10 of the 18 stories that appeared in the French original. One of the stories, Vaninka, appeared as The Red House in 1842, translated by Catherine Gore as part of Modern French Life. These little histories of French infamy proved hugely significant in the writing career of Dumas père. Many of the themes were returned to by the writer in later years, most famously L&apos;Homme au Masque de Fer, not translated in the present collection, but included in the original French publication. Several of the original stories were written in collaboration with other authors such as Arnould and Fournier.

Merryfield, December 24th 1859'. A very good, clean, unfoxed and unmarked set. ---- Kress C.6398. FIRST EDITION of Mill's popular and infuential treatise on inductive logic. In this work Mill formulates just five principles of inductive reasoning (known as Mill's Methods) which determine whether causes and effects are connected. This method produced a system which became an important source for all the experimental sciences. Mill's book is important in the philosophy of science, and more generally, insofar as it outlines the empirical principles Mill would use to justify his moral and political philosophies. It had a strong influence on scientists such as Dirac. An article in "Philosophy of Recent Times" has described it as an 'attempt to expound a psychological system of logic within empiricist principles. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.
