[Tytler, Patrick Fraser]
[London: William Nichol, Shakespeare Press, Pall Mall], 1843. First edition. Chromolithographic frontispiece by Henry Shaw. [vi], 85, [1] pp. 4to. Bound in full blue original watered cloth, stamped in gilt, a.e.g. Very fine, laid into a contemporary full crimson morocco drop box. Shaw, Henry. First edition. Chromolithographic frontispiece by Henry Shaw. [vi], 85, [1] pp. 4to. Queen Victoria bought this magnificent enamelled gold heart from the Strawberry Hill sale for £136.10 (agent Hertz), and it remains one of the most important early jewels in the Royal Collection. It is said to have been commissioned by Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox (1515-78), for her husband Matthew Stewart, Earl of Lennox and Regent of Scotland, who fell in battle in 1571. Walpole's 1784 descriptive catalogue of Strawberry Hill and its contents described the jewel thus: "A golden heart set with jewels, and ornamented with emblematic figures enamelled, at Scottish mottoes; made by the order of the lady Margaret Douglas, mother of Henry lord Darnley, in memory of her husband Matthew Stuart, earl of Lenox and regent of Scotland, murdered by the papists." The present privately printed description was commissioned by Queen Victoria and features a fine chromolithographic frontispiece illustration of the jewel by Henry Shaw. Joan Evans, History of Jewellery, 1100-1870 (London: Faber and Faber, 1953), illus. p. 126; Jane Roberts, ed., Royal Treasures: a Golden Jubilee Celebration(London: The Royal Collection, 2002); not in Sinkankas

DICKENS, Charles.
London: Chapman & Hall,, 1843. Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. With illustrations by John Leech. Octavo. Original light reddish-brown vertical fine-ribbed cloth, spine and front cover decorated and lettered gilt, sides stamped in blind, green endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a red cloth chemise and red quarter morocco solander box. Hand-coloured etched frontispiece and 3 steel-engraved plates after Leech, wood-engravings within the text by W. J. Linton after Leech; title page printed in blue & red. Binding rolled and a little dulled, a few nicks to extremities of spine. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, first issue, with "Stave I" on the first page of text and green endpapers, all the first edition textual points. The binding differs from Todd's ordering in that the closest interval between blind-stamping left margin and left extremity of gilt wreath is 15 mm but the "D" of "Dickens" within the gilt wreath has the upper serif broken off. The hand-coloured green endpapers, Dickens's original choice for his lavish gift book, proved a disappointment. The colour tended to dust off and smudge, so the endpapers were changed to yellow, not requiring hand work. Probably in the middle of binding, as demand grew faster than the current endpaper stock, it was decided to use up the green paper, and thereafter it was used indiscriminately with yellow, but discarded again when the initial supply of green became exhausted. Primary copies therefore occur with either green or yellow endpapers, some collectors preferring green as the a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BALZAC Honoré de
s.l., 1843. Fine. s.l. s.d. [circa 1843], 30,5x13,3cm, Une page et demie sur un feuillet remplié. - BALZAC Honoré de Unpublished autograph letter signed to one of his muses, the Countess Merlin: "you know only literary roses, but we all have thorns." N. p. n. d. [circa 1843], 305 x 133 mm (12 x 5 1/4 "), one and a half page on a folded leave An exceptional autograph letter signed and as yet unpublished from Balzac to the Countess Merlin. One and a half pages in black ink. Balzac is writing to a noted female writer and singer of Spanish and Cuban origin, who was the inspiration for several characters in his Human Comedy. Our thanks are due to Mr. Hervé Yon, a Balzac specialist, who helped us identify the addressee of this letter (which will be published in volume three of the Pléiade's Correspondance de Balzac, as number 42-175). Maria de Las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, born in Havana in 1788, was the scion of an aristocratic Spanish family. From her childhood in Cuba, she retained a "wild" temperament (according to Sainte-Beuve) and an exotic charm that made her famous at the court of King Joseph Bonaparte in Madrid. There, she met General Merlin, the Commander of the Royal Guard. She married him in 1811 before leaving for Paris, where her talents and position rapidly earned her a place in the first ranks of Parisian high society. She maintained one of the most popular salons in Paris, whose visitors included La Fayette, George Sand, Mérimée, Chateaubriand, Musset, as well as a number of composers including Chopin, Verdi, Donizetti, and Rossini. Balzac had had pride … [Click Below for Full Description]

COURNOT, A.A.
Paris: Librairie de L. Hachette, 1843. FIRST EDITION. With numerous tables and a folding plate. Contemporary red pebbled cloth, stamp of the Lycée Impérial de St. Quentin (all gilt faded) on the front cover, gilt spine in compartments; silk moire endpapers, minor spotting throughout, overall a very good copy. First edition of Cournot's popular and successful work on the theory of chance occurrences. Cournot's work is "important in the history of the calculus of probability, since it examines in an original way the interpretation and foundations of this calculus and its applications. According to Cournot, occurrences in our world are always determined by a cause. But in the universe there are independent causal chains. If, at a given point in time and space, two of these chains have a common link, this coincidence constitutes the fortuitous character of the event thus engendered. Consequently, there would be an objective chance occurrence that would nevertheless have a cause. This seeming paradox would be no reflection of our ignorance" (DSB). Cournot interprets values of objective occurrences as a degree of what he calls "physical probability." He also insisted on the necessary distinction between objective and subjective probability (depending upon ignorance and resting upon the consideration of events that are deemed equiprobable). He also was able to show clearly the importance of the applications of the calculus of probability to the scientific description and explanation of human acts. Cournot (1801-1877) was a French philosopher and mathematician who a … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Klemm in Kat. VENN, John.) COURNOT, Antoine Augustin.
Paris: Librairie de L. Hachette, 1843 - Octavo. Contemporary red cloth, black morocco label to spine lettered gilt, top edge brown, edges speckled red. Spine faded, skilful repair to spine panel and lower portion of label, light scratches to covers, spot of wear to front cover and tips, light foxing and occasional faint dampstain to contents. A very good copy. Folding diagram to rear. First edition. This is a significant association copy, with the ownership inscription of the logician and philosopher John Venn (1834–1923), the inventor of the eponymous diagram, on the title page: "John Venn. G & C Coll. 1880." Venn entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1853, obtaining his degree in 1857 and going on to become a fellow of the college and President in 1903. Venn popularised the frequentist view on probability which Cournot introduced here. Cournot was one of four writers from three countries (the others being Jakob Friederick Fries, Richard Leslie Ellis, and John Stuart Mill) who "independently proposed interpretations of probability that were fundamentally frequentist in character" (Skyrms and Harper, p. 188). However, "despite this early efflorescence, the frequency theory did not begin to gain widespread acceptance until its careful elaboration, nearly a quarter of a century later, in John Venn's Logic of Chance", published in 1866 (ibid.). Uncommon in commerce, with five copies traced at auction since 1975. Skyrms and Harper (eds.) Causation, Chance and Credence: Volume 1, 1988. [Attributes: First Edition]

MR. REAVIS
GAINESVILLE, ALABAMA, KEMPER SPRINGS MISSISSIPPI: (1843). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a very interesting, original manuscript letter handwritten by Reavis [as signed] to his wife Mrs. Mary Reavis, Kemper Springs, Mississippi. Dated Gainesville September 8, 1843 [while not specified we have anecdotal information this is Gainesville in Alabama]. Of particular fascination to researchers and historians of the times and social life this letter makes for an unusual look in to what appears to be a marriage in crisis. Mr. Reavis provides all the societal niceties in his first paragraph and we understand he misses his family, though this may be a ruse, he will not send for them as there is sickness: 'I cannot let you come at this time yet the weather is getting so extremely warm I am afraid it will get sickly here indeed I hear of a good deal of sickness now. I think I shall not send for you until the white frost makes its appearance.' However there is an illness within already: Mr. Reavis specifies that his wife should use an entire piece of paper writing next time so that her complaints cannot be read by the deliverer as was already the case of a woman reading her problems through the ends of the paper and now laughing about it to all. He also notes that while she is not ashamed to say she loves him she also has no shame to say he makes her sick to her stomach. A very personal and intimate 'catching up' letter between an unhappy and rather confused husband and to a wife who appears to already be in a vindictive fight. The letter swings back to describing life in Gainesv … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Edition. The year 1818 marked the beginning of renewed British interest in the search for an arctic passage to the Pacific. Two expeditions were undertaken, John Ross's to the north-west and John Buchan's to the north-east. Beechey served on the latter on board the Trent, commanded by John Franklin. The two ships, Dorothea and Trent, sailed from the Shetland Islands into the western and northern Svalbard waters, but did not get beyond Spitsbergen, returning along the Greenland coast. In addition to describing the voyage, Beechey provides details regarding surveying and ice conditions, as well as accounts of earlier voyages to discover a north-east passage near West Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya (Barents, Hudson, Baffin, Phipps, &c.), and attempts to establish colonies on West Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen.
