Davidson, C.J.C.
London Henry Colburn, 1843. First edition, two volumes, 8vo (19.5 x 12 cm), pp.xv, 344; x, 349. A handsome set from the Signet Library, contemporary speckled calf with their monogram in gilt, neatly re-backed in calf. C.J.C. Davidson, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Bengal Sappers and Miners, describes his series of travels in India between May 1839 and March 1840, which took him from the Himalayas, along the Ganges, and to the Kingdom of Oude, among other locations. He writes with an assured informality; his scathing account of Bishop Heber's descriptions of Hinduism, as opposed to William Ward's account of Hinduism, is notable. Whether it be the unlucky quantity of his elephant's toes, tiger hunting, or tea planting in Assam, his prose is punchy and engaging. In the words of the preface, he was "determined to mix. with the natives." [Attributes: First Edition]

First printing of 7 importent papers on Quaternions and their applications. Hamilton announced his invention of Quaternions in 1843 at a meeting of the Royal Irish Academy and spent the rest of his years developing the subject. Hamilton's creation of a new algebra of quaternions (a noncommunicative algebra), became a turning point in the development of mathematics and a discovery which made possible the creation of the general theory of relativity. His algebra was later to form the basis of quantum mechanics and for the proper understanding of the atom. The creation of quaternions is one of the famous moments in the history of mathematics. "The quaternions came to Hamilton in one of those flashes of understanding that occasionally occur after long deliberation on a problem. He was walking into Dublin on 16 October 1843 along the Royal Canal to preside at a meeting of the Royal Irish Academy, when the discovery came to him. As he described it, "An electric circuit seemed to close."18 He immediately scratched the formula for quaternion multiplication on the stone of a bridge over the canal. His reaction must have been in part a desire to commemorate a discovery of capital importance, but it was also a reflection of his working habits. Hamilton was an in … [Click Below for Full Description]

A pair of views of Charlotte Amalie on the Island of St Thomas in the Virgin Islands, after Lieutenant Walford Thomas Bellairs R.N. Walford Thomas Bellairs (1794-1850) joined the Navy in 1809 and was made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent in charge of mail on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. It is during this time that Bellairs began sketching, and painting. The National Maritime Museum hold two examples of his West India drawings, whilst the Library of Australia a watercolour of Panama. A large collection of his sketches of the Far East were sold in 1982. His work was evidently held in high enough regard, as in around 1843 his watercolour views of St. Thomas in the West Indies were drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel - the present work - and published as separate prints. Reps 4090.

Charles Dickens
For sale is an exceptionally rare and important First Edition of arguably the finest work of fiction of the C19th: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, London, 1843. 166p.p., plus the publisher's double-sided advertisement leaf. This is First State, with 'Stave One' to the first text page. All of Smith's text errors here present. A delightfully unsophisticated volume, it is bound in the publisher's original salmon-red cloth, with gilt decoration to the spine and upper board. Stamping in blind to both boards. All page edges gilt. Original yellow-coated endpapers. The binding, along with the text block, is also First State. This wonderful little volume has: "Four hand colored steel-engraved plates by John Leech";"Four black and white wood-engraved illustrations by W.J. Linton"; "The title page in printed in blue and red" "dated 1843 on title page". Externally it remains in very pleasing order; the cloth largely bright and the hinges intact. A trifle won extraneously, as expected with this title, but this really matters not. Internally, save the odd mark to a few leaves, it is very fresh. The gutters very firm, but starting a little to the rear. Overall, this is an opportunity to own a cornerstone of English literature, and one not to be missed. Unsophisticated, exceedingly rare, and in such pleasing condition, it comes very, very highly recommended indeed. La factura impecable de tradición naturalista de sus acuarelas, atenta al detalle anecdótico, fue elogiada ya en su tiempo." [Thackeray, William Makepeace] Mr. M. A. Titmarsh
London: Chapman and Hall, 1843. First edition. Inscribed by the author to the publisher's wife: "with W. M. Thackeray's compliments to Mrs. Chapman." Two volumes in the original publisher's fine green cloth, spines repaired. Internally an excellent, clean copy, made the more exceptional by the presentation inscription (only five presentation copies are known). With Edward Chapman's bookplate, as well as the bookplates of "Terry" and Frank Hogan on the front paste-downs. Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise. "The Irish Sketch Book was the result of a journey in Ireland in the summer of 1842, and was published the next year in two volumes. The last paragraph and signature of his dedication to Lever marked it as Thackeray's first formal issue of a book under his own name, and Lady Ritchie speaks of it as the first 'publication'" (Life of Thackeray). In its own time, the work because well known and initiated Thackeray's reputation. Documenting his travels from Dublin, through hunting and horse races in Killarney, the book provided rich descriptions and a wealth of sketches of Irish countryside. More than just a celebraton of wealth and leisure, however, Thackeray also documented some of the social troubles confronted by the Irish. "Thackeray notes the very poor conditions in which some people were living prior to the onset of the Famine...also provided are observations on the sectarian divide between the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland at the time" (Teeling). A work that signaled Thackeray's major literary preoccupations.

Henry Walcott Farnam, Wilbur Cross, Helen MacAfee, David Morris Potter, and Paul Pickrel, John J.E. Palmer (eds.)
New Haven: Maltby, Wiley, Ginn, Yale, et al. Ex-Library set of bound volumes of "The New Englander," which was later called "New Englander and Yale Review," which was later called "The Yale Review," from 1843 - Summer, 1969. The journal, regarded as the oldest literary quarterly in the US, was founded originally in 1819 as The Christian Spectator. In 1843 it changed its name to "The New Englander," and its focus to history and economics. In 1885 it was renamed to "The New Englander and Yale Review." Finally, in 1892, new editor Henry Walcott Farnam changed the name to its current title, "The Yale Review," and decided to focus more on politics and history, and, eventually, literature and poetry. This set contains 131 bound volumes, starting with Volume 1 of "The New Englander" (1843), through Volume 58 of "The Yale Review," (1968-9). This set lacks only one book, Volume 21 of "The New Englander," (1862), but it does have an additional index to the first 19 volumes of "The Yale Review." Library stickers on spines, bookplates on front pastedowns, and stamping (ink and blindstamps) to prelims and title pages. Contents are readable and unmarked. Many of the early volumes have tissue-covered plates. Some of the earliest volumes are in 1/2 leather bindings, but most of their boards are loose. The later volumes are bound in green and black library buckram. "The New Englander" attracted some well known names, but the modern history of the journal, beginning with its appointment of Wilbur Cross as editor in 1911, featured writers such as Thomas Mann, Henry Adams, Virginia Woolf, Geor … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

DICKENS, Charles. A Christmas Carol, [along with:] The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man and Ghost's Bargain. Chapman and Hall 1843-48, London, 1843. First editions of all five of Charles Dickens' Christmas Books, chief among them a first edition, second issue of A Christmas Carol, the veritable "Bible of Christmas." Octavo, 5 volumes. Housed together in a custom slipcase. Illustrated with sixty-three engravings altogether, four in color, by Leech, Maclise, Stanfield, Doyle and Landseer. Christmas Carol with the red-and-blue title page dated 1843, and the half title printed in blue. Four more Christmas books followed its success. In each book, he deftly develops the themes of the first, ideals that have consequently become inseparable from the holiday itself: love and redemption, charity and mercy. First edition of The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man and Ghost's Bargain. 110-125. Smith II: 4-6, 8-9. Gimbel (Podeschi). An exceptional set. A Christmas Carol "may readily be called the Bible of Christmas It was issued about ten days before Christmas, 1843, and 6000 copies were sold on the first day the number of reprintings have been so many that all attempts at the figures have been futile. Altogether 24 editions were issued in the original format" (Eckel, 110). "It was a work written at the height of Dickens' great powers, which would add to his considerable fame, bring a new work to the English language, increase the festivities at Christmastime, and contain his most eloquent protest at the co … [Click Below for Full Description]

[HOUSE OF COMMONS] [SHIPWRECKS]
[Maritime, Naval History] ~ [SHIPWRECKS], [HOUSE OF COMMONS] First report from the select committee on shipwrecks; together with the minutes of evidence, appendix, and index [London]. [James & Luke J. Hansard], [1843]. Quarto. xviii, 410, 106, 107-112, 107-193pp, [1]. With 19 engraved plates (four of which hand-coloured, six of which folding), and an engraved folding map. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting black morocco lettering-pieces. Extremities rubbed, slight splitting to joints. Bookplates and ink shelf-marks of Bath Reference Library to endpapers, leaves lightly toned, very occasional light spotting. The initial report of the select committee appointed, by an order of parliament in February 1843, to enquire into the shipwrecks of British vessels, and the means of preserving the lives and property of shipwrecked persons. The committee, chaired by prominent merchant George Palmer (1772-1853), included respected Royal Navy officers Sir James Dundas (1785-1862) and Sir Charles Napier (1786-1860). The primary concern of the investigation was to discover, through the exploration of past incidents, technological methods for lessening maritime losses; this the committee pursued by inviting gentlemen engineers and former naval personnel to submit plans for innovations in coastal safety, including improved harbour beacons, breakwaters, and lighthouses. The report records the minutes of each of these meetings, the proposed structures being richly illustrated, and is appended with a remarkable lengthy catalogue of those British ships lost at sea since 1841 - whi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHILD, L. Maria
Charles S. Francis and Company, New York, 1843. First edition. Octavo. 276pp. Black cloth gilt with glazed cream endpapers. Some foxing, cloth lightly worn through at spine ends, one signature sprung forward but a nice, very good copy. Inscribed by Child to an important abolitionist and her close friend: "Ellis Gray Loring. From his affectionate and grateful friend, the author." In pencil someone has written "1842" below the inscription. Loring was an important American abolitionist, who co-founded the New England Anti-Slavery Society, provided legal advice to abolitionists, harbored fugitive slaves in his home, and helped finance the abolitionist newspaper, *The Liberator.* When he died in 1858, William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips eulogized Loring at the New England Anti-Slavery Convention; their remarks were published in *The Liberator.* When John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a tribute to Loring, he addressed it to their mutual friend Lydia Maria Child. A superb association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
