LA RUSSIE EN 1839. Vol. I (-IV)

D'Amyot, 1843. In 16, 4 voll., pp. 411, 398, 357, 372 con una genealogia dei Principi di Brunswick a doppia pagina n.t. Sporadiche bruniture ma nel complesso buon esemplare. M.pg. ITA

[Rossetti, Dante Gabriel- First Book, Fine Binding] Sir Hugh the Heron. A Legendary Tale

London: G. Polidori's Private Press, 1843. First edition. For Private Circulation. Quarto. (205 x 165 mm) Exquisitely bound by MacDonald in sumptuous full green/teal morocco with elaborate gilt stamped geometric ruling and petal and blossom motif on both covers and spine, including eight red onlays, along with similar design and onlays on green/teal dentelles and full large brown morocco doublures, light green silk endsheets over paper. Gilt palet by MacDonald on rear dentelle. Rossetti's exceedingly rare first book, with the original lime green wrappers and lettering in pencil, probably by Rossetti or Polidori. The book was written for the most part when he was twelve, but not completed for another two years, when it was printed by his grandfather, Gaetano Polidori, on his small private printing-press. How many copies of these verses were printed is not known. Whatever the number, many of them ended up in the hands of his brother, William Michael Rossetti, who records that "he once got me to destroy a rather considerable stock of copies which remained." Willis Vickery Copy, and sold in the Vickery Sale in 1933. 24pp. Bound with extra leaves to round out for the bindery. In superb vintage full red morocco two-part pull-on case with raised bands and gilt lettering. Fine condition. A wonderful binding on Rossetti's first book.

The fine illustrations of gross pathology make this one of the greatest works of its kind. Cruveilhier, first Professor of Pathological Anatomy in Paris, gave the first description of multiple sclerosis. and an early description of Cruveilhier's palsy. Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and ulceration of the stomach due to hyperacidity were also for the first time described in the above work; to each the name Cruveilhier's disease has been attached. (Garrison / Morton, 2286). Garrison / Morton, cit. Wellcome, II, p. 412. Italiano [Attributes: Hard Cover]

EL C. VALENTIN CANALIZO, GENERAL DE DIVISION, GOBERNADOR Y COMANDANTE GENERAL DEL DEPARTAMENTO DE MÉXICO. POR EL MINISTERIO DE JUSTICIA E INSTRUCCION PUBLICA SE ME HA COMUNICADO CON FECHA DE AYER EL DECRETO SIGUIENTE...

[Mexico, 1843. Broadside, 12 3/4 x 9 inches. Tanned. Worn around the edges and with a few small closed tears. Very good. In a half calf and cloth folding box, spine gilt. Rare first printing of this significant decree, re- admitting the Jesuits into the Southwest, including California and New Mexico, in order to "civilize" the local Indians. "Since three hundred years of force and conquest had not been sufficient to introduce civilization to the wild Indians of the Mexican frontier areas, Santa Anna authorized the readmittance of the Jesuits to establish missions in the Californias, New Mexico, Sonora, Sinaloa, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Texas to Christianize and subdue them" - Howell. This decree was issued by Santa Anna at Tacubaya on June 21, 1843, and ordered printed in Mexico City on June 22. The California missions had been secularized a decade earlier. The Jesuits, who had done so much in the development of the Spanish Southwest, had been expelled from the region in the mid-18th century. The text of this decree was reprinted in August 1843, but the present broadside appears to be the first printed appearance of this consequential directive, which was paternalism of the highest order.         China In A Series of Views, Displaying The Scenery, Architecture And Social Habits, Of That Ancient Empire

London.: Fisher, Son & Co.. 1843).. 4 volumes. 4 engraved vignette title-pages, 124 black and white tissue guarded engravings after drawings by Thomas Allom. Volume I 96pp; Volume II 72pp; Volume III 68pp; Volume IV 56pp; all edges gilt. Bound in highly decorative gilt red cloth bindings. Cloth damaged with a little loss at head and tail of spines on all volumes. 3cm loss of cloth at head, a smaller section at tail and in another small place on the spine of volume II. Vignette titlepages foxed in places but generally the plates and text is very clean. The gilt decoration is bright and in good condition. An attractive set. Very popular at the time of publication, this work ran to a number of editions to satisfy the demand which extended throughout Europe. The that there was a market for an abridged German edition in 12 parts (with slightly smaller plates) shortly after the English edition is an example of just how popular it was! The majority of the views in these volumes not surprisingly show southern China, including images of Hong Kong, Canton and Macao, reflecting the limited British access to China at the time. However there are also some images and description of Peking, Nanking and Jehol where Sir George Staunton's Embassy to China had travelled. The text of these volumes is by the Reverend G.N. Wright, who in common with Thomas Allom whose images illustrate this volume, had never been to China. Wright's text, drawn from his research on China performed at the British Library, is descriptive and easy to read though, not surprisingly, in keeping with the times as far as attitudes to race and culture. Allom did as Wright had done with his text and drew upon a number of other sources for his images. These volumes give a valuable insight into the attitudes towards China in the early 19th century and were very influential in their day. .

"We Pity the Plumage, But Forget the Dying Bird." An Address to the People on the Death of the Princess Charlotte

[London]: "Reprinted for Thomas Rodd", 1843. First edition. Fine. Octavo. Gatherings stiched; red morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION. According to Wise: "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. My own opinion is that no original ever existed, that the private impression of twenty copies was a myth, and that Rodd's so-called facsimile reprint of 1843 is in fact the actual princeps of the Address" (Ashley V, p.64).         "Vue på Dublins Rivier."

Akvarell. Osignerad och odaterad. 19×26,5 cm.
