Berlin, Königliche Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1843. Tall Folio (41.1 x 27.5 cm). Title page, dedication page, 158 pp., four partly handcoloured engraved plates. Original blind gray-blue wrappers.= Separate issue, in large paper size, of this rare work of fundamental importance to the knowledge of the Protozoa, including Foraminifera, and unicellular algae. A smaller sized offprint with the plates folded is known too, but also very rare. The four plates show diatoms, foraminifers and other microscopical organisms from the Falkland Islands, Cayenne, Real del Monte, and New York, respectively. From many additional localities (for instance several Caribbean islands; several U.S. states, etc., etc.) more species are reported. Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876), was a German naturalist, explorer, zoologist, comparative anatomist, geologist, palaeontologist, and microscopist. He is perhaps best known for his microscopical works, writing extensively on "Infusionsthierchen" (Infusoria).         Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs. Commodore [Thomas ap Catesby] Jones.

George Town [Maryland, later incorporated into Washington, D.C.] 4to (25.2 cm, 9.9"). [2] ff.. 1843 Written to the wife of the U.S. Naval officer who in 1842 seized and briefly held the port of Monterey under the mistaken impression that war with Mexico had begun, this supportive, warmly written letter assures that lady that "the great mass of the loyal American Citizens view it [her husband's action] as a chivalrous and most glorious act of military vigilance; indeed two of the most intelligent and influential members of Congress a few days since declared, that but for political considerations involving at the moment National Courtesy, they would move the presentation of a Splendid Sword to the Gallant Commodore in Commendation of his Conduct . . ." In addition, Steuart notes that he is quite confident that Commodore Jones will be well provided for financially. Origin & Provenance: The writer was neither Lieutenant Colonel William Steuart, who died in 1839, nor William Steuart, chief statistician of the Bureau of the Census, who was born in 1861; rather, this was beyond a doubt => the William M. Steuart for whom Steuart Street in San Francisco was named ? the acting chairman of the California State Constitutional Convention in 1849 and a one-time candidate for governor of the state. Steuert first went to California as a secretary to Commodore Jones and maintained strong ties to the family. Folded as mailed, with traces of original red wax seal; lower inner corner reinforced with cellophane tape some time ago. Two small spots of staining. => A personal yet politically instructive window on contemporary opinion, written by someone who was surely (kindly!) "spinning" yet (also) knew whereof he spoke.

London: Fisher, Son, & Co.,, [1843]. in a series of views, displaying the scenery, architecture, and social habits, of that ancient empire. Drawn, from original and authentic sketches, by Thomas Allom. With historical and descriptive notices. 4 volumes in 2, quarto in half-sheets (265 x 190 mm). Contemporary ?Irish olive-green full morocco, spines gilt in compartments with triple-fillet and foliate borders, titles to second and fourth and floral centrepieces to remaining compartments gilt, similar rolled borders gilt to covers, all edges gilt, turn-ins ruled in gilt, surface-paper endpapers. 4 steel-engraved vignette title-pages and 124 similar plates after Thomas Allon. Spines sunned to tan, corners very lightly bumped and rubbed, a few small scuffs and marks to covers, upper outer corner of front board vol. 1 lightly abraded, inner hinges sometime reinforced with marbled paper, foxing to vol. 1 prelims, a few occasional spots to plates, short closed tear to top edge of vol. 1 sig. C2, the text spared. A very good copy with strong impressions of the plates. First edition of "the best-known nineteenth-century work" on China (ODNB). Published the year after the First Opium War ended, Allom's China is concerned mainly with areas of British interest in southern China, including Hong Kong, Macao, Canton and Hunan, though there are also many attractive views of Peking. Allom (1804-1872) originally trained as an architectural draughtsman at the Royal Academy Schools, but "it is upon about 1500 designs for albums of topographical steel-engravings that his more prominent and lasting reputation rests. This work, initially undertaken to support himself as a student, became his principal occupation between 1828 and 1845, and during these years he made extensive sketching tours in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Turkey, mainly for the publisher H. Fisher & Son" (idem). He in fact never visited China and based his illustrations on the work of other artists, though in 1846 he presented a copy of China and of his work on France to King Louis-Philippe, who expressed himself "highly gratified with both" (idem). According to Hunnisett, "Allom's drawings are full of little touches which redeem his landscapes from formality" (Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England, p. 109). The author of the text, G. N. Wright (1794/5-1877) was a Church of England clergyman who wrote the text for a number of topograhical works, most of them vehicles for artists' engravings; this copy has an interesting nonconformist provenance, with the partially effaced book-labels of Irish Quaker, Anna Barcroft (née Malcomson, 1840-1924), mother of noted physiologist Sir Joseph Barcroft, to the front pastedowns, and the ownership inscription of her mother, Sarah D. Malcomson, dated Glenmore, 1842, to the verso of the the Lake See-Hoo plate (facing p. 8 vol. 1).

        Christmas Books

1843 - DICKENS, Charles. The Christmas Books. London: Chapman and Hall, 1843-48. Together, five volumes. Small octavo, original rose and red cloths (Carol is expertly rebacked with original spine laid down), gilt-decorated covers and spines, all edges gilt. Housed in custom chemises and slipcase. $28,000.First editions of all five of Charles Dickens' Christmas Books-chief among them a first issue of his immortal Christmas Carol, the veritable "Bible of Christmas"-illustrated with 63 engravings, four in color, by Leech, Maclise, Stanfield, Doyle and Landseer, all books in the original gilt-decorated cloth. A lovely set.A Christmas Carol "may readily be called the Bible of Christmas". It was issued about ten days before Christmas, 1843, and 6000 copies were sold on the first day". the number of reprintings have been so many that all attempts at the figures have been futile. Altogether 24 editions were issued in the original format" (Eckel, 110). "It was a work written at the height of Dickens' great powers, which would add to his considerable fame, bring a new work to the English language, increase the festivities at Christmastime, and contain his most eloquent protest at the condition of the poor" (John Mortimer). "Suddenly conceived and written within a few weeks, [A Christmas Carol] was the first of Dickens' Christmas books (a new literary genre thus created incidentally)". it was an extraordinary achievement-the one great Christmas myth of modern literature." The publication history of A Christmas Carol is bibliographically complex. "Dickens decided to publish the book himself". He wanted the Carol to be a beautiful gift book and took pride in its development. He stipulated the following requirements: a fancy binding, blind-stamped, with gilding on the spine and front cover; all edges gilded; four full-page hand-colored etchings; half title and title pages printed in colors of bright red and green; and hand-colored green endpapers to match the green title page". However, in examining printed copies prior to publication, Dickens was disappointed with the appearance of the green titles, which turned drab, and the hand-colored green endpapers, which dusted off and smudged, and had the title page changed to red and blue, the half title to blue, the date on the title page changed from 1844 to 1843, and the endpapers changed to yellow, which did not require hand work. Dickens' changes were completed by December 17". Since Dickens' instructions to discontinue the unsatisfactory titles and endpapers were received at the press before publication, at a time when there were on hand different quantities of endpapers, title pages, and sheets of printed text already produced, many copies are found with a mixture of features" (Gimbel A79). A Christmas Carol is from the first issue, with uncorrected text ("Stave I" as the first chapter heading), the red-and-blue title page dated 1843, the half title printed in blue, and light green endpapers. (First-issue copies appear with either yellow or green endpapers, no priority established.) Binding matches Todd's first impression, first issue, with the smallest interval between blindstamped border and gilt wreath equal to 14-15 mm, and with the "D" in "Dickens" unbroken (Smith II:4). First edition of The Chimes, with the first state of the engraved title page (publisher's imprint is engraved within the title vignette); First edition of The Cricket on the Hearth, with second state of advertising leaf at rear (headed "New Edition of Oliver Twist"); First edition of The Battle of Life, with vignette title page in the fourth state (subtitled "A Love Story" on a scroll carried by an angel and without publisher's imprint); First edition of The Haunted Man and The Ghost's Bargain. All advertisements present, as issued.Dickens followed A Christmas Carol's tremendous success with four more Christmas books. In each book, he deftly develops the themes of the first, ideals that have consequently become inse [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ephemera - RARE Broadside - Dos Vistas De Toros - Bullfighting - Text in Spanish

Seville 1843 - Seville, 1843. Uncommon original broadside for two bullfights taking place at the Seville Plaza 16-17 April 1843, with very detailed programme details and a beautiful steel cut engraving which illustrates the sport in its traditional form - the matador being mounted. Printed by De Velez Bracho. Text is in Spanish. Folio. Single leaf measuring approximately 28,5 x 39 cm. Mounting paper to left margin, unobtrusive to text, otherwise in very good condition, clean and bright. "Con el Correspondiente Permiso Se Egecutarán Dos Vistas de Toros en los tardes del Domingo 16 y Lunes 17 del presente mes de Abril La Plaza será mandada y presidida por la Autoridad competente" [With permission two bullfighting events will take place in the afternoons of Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th of April this year The Plaza will be directed and chaired by the competent authority] Especially interesting about this document is the woodcut illustration of a matador de toros (bullfighter) mounted on horseback while lancing his behemoth opponent. From ancient times to mid-nineteenth century, a bullfighter was mounted on a highly trained horse; while mounted he confronted and killed the bull. With skilled capework, a man on foot aided the horseman in positioning the bull. The capeman, in his precarious proximity to the bull, began to draw more attention from the crowd however, and the modern style corrida de toros (running of bulls) subsequently took shape, the bullfighter being face to face at ground level with the raging bull. The two famous and accredited matadors are named, including D. Francisco Taviel de Andrade, who had been performing at the Seville bull ring since 1832 (the same year in which he purchased land from the famous bullfighter Fernando Concha y Sierra; and Senior Conde del Aguila who bred his own cattle in his "ganaderia, and who may be a nobleman associated with the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. Spectator fees ranged from 28 rs to 6 rs, be they watching from the "barandillas de piedra" (stone railings), the Balcones de sol (sun balconies), etc. [Spanish-style bullfighting today is in fact reverse to the traditional sport depicted on this broadside, each matador now being on foot and having as assistants two mounted picadores (lancers on horseback), as well as others on foot in the ring with him.] Construction of the circular Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla began in 1749. Situated on Baratillo hill, it replaced an even earlier rectangular bullfighting building, and it continues to host one of the world's most popular bullfighting festivals including the Feria de Abril, and the most challenging of competitions. From 1786-88 under the reign of Carlos [Charles] III of Spain, bullfighting was prohibited. Bullfighting is normally fatal for the bull, and it is dangerous for the matador. Activism against bullfighting has existed in Spain since the beginning of the early nineteenth century, when a group of intellectuals, pertaining to the Generation of 98, embarked on a dual crusade against the popularity of bullfighting and Flamenco music, dismissing them as "non-European" elements of Spanish culture which were to blame for the country's social and economic backwardness. More recently, bullfighting has come under increasing attack over concern for animal welfare. Separatist and nationalist sentiment in Catalonia has played a key role in the region-wide ban ofthe practice, which is strongly associated to Spanish national identity. Galician and Basque nationalism have also expressed abolitionist stances on the basis of identity politics, although in the case of the latter this has been somewhat mooted by the fact that bullfighting is at the heart of the San Fermin festival in Pamplona. Animal welfare concerns are perhaps the prime driver of anti-bullfighting outside of Spain, although rejection of traditionalism and criollo elitism may also play a role in Latin America, explaining why such activism

[Paris, Martinet, 1796-1843].

1843. 10 vols. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards. Labels with title and shelf number in ink pasted on spine. With 1602 (of 1636) hand-coloured full-page engraved plates (8 folding). Fine set of beautifully hand-coloured plates of theatrical costumes. The often humorous plates scenically portray the most important Parisian actors and actresses of the early 19th c. and are of great interest to theatre history. The plates were published separately over a period of almost 50 years. "Ein vollständiges Exemplar von 1636 Tafeln is daher äusserst selten" (Lipperheide). The present copy contains 1602 out of the original 1636 engraved plates. Wants plates 520-21, 525, 550-51, 557, 616-619, 794, 1020-1039, 1636 and the preliminary matter, which were added to the last issue. Plates 520-21, 525, 550-51 and 557 are supplied from another work. Vol. 4 has two extra plates, numbered 611bis and 614bis; vol. 5 contains 8 extra lithographed plates and one engraved plate from another work; 7 folding plates are double-numbered. The total 1619 plates are mostly engraved by Maleuvre after Joly, Carle, Duplessi, Foisil, Dubois, Merle, Chaponier etc., some with musical scores. A fine set, with some plates misbound; plate 793 somewhat soiled; vols. 3 & 5 mixed with plates from other works; without the prelims; spine vol. 10 slightly damaged. A set with this number of plates is exceptionally rare: most copies on the market and in libraries internationally consist of only 4 or 5 volumes. Although unmarked, the present set comes from the library of Duke Max of Bavaria (1808-88), father of Elisabeth of Austria. Colas 2328. Lipperheide 3204. Hiler, p. 704.
