A Defence of the Sincere and True Translations of the Holy Scriptures into the English Tongue

      Cambridge - The University Press, 1843. Cambridge - The University Press, 1843 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart copy of the Defence of the Sincere and True Translations of the Holy Scriptures into the English Tongue against the Cavils of Gregory Martin, by Master William Fulke of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge. Fulkes point-by-point response accuses Martin, whom he describes as one of the readers of Popish divinity in the traitorous Seminary of Reims, of presenting manifold cavils, frivolous quarrels, and impudent slanders (p. [2]). (David Arthur Pailin). This bookmakesup partof the fine personal collection of antiquarian books relating to the Philosophy of Religion assembled by Professor David Arthur Pailin. We Pity the Plumage, but Forget the Dying Bird. " An Address to the People on the Death of Princess Charlotte. By The Hermit of Marlow

      [London: Reprinted for Thomas Rodd, Great Newport Street (Compton & Ritchie, Printers, Middle Street, Cloth Fair), c. 1843] - According to Wise: "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. My own opinion is that no original ever existed, that the private impression of twenty copies was a myth, and that Rodd's so-called facsimile reprint of 1843 is in fact the actual princeps of the Address." Political essay arguing that the death of Princess Charlotte in childbirth was "a private grief," while the execution of three weavers for high treason in Derbyshire was a national tragedy. "The execution of Brandreth, Ludlam, and Turner is an event of quite a different character from the death of Princess Charlotte . It is a national calamity that we endure men to rule over us, who sanction for whatever ends a conspiracy which is to arrive at its purpose through such a frightful pouring forth of human blood and agony. . Liberty is dead!" Uncommon First edition. 8vo. 16 pp. Sewn as issued. In half blue morocco slipcase and chemise. Fine. Ashley V, p. 64; Granniss Shelley, pp. 43-44; Wise Shelley, p. 46

        History of the War in Affghanistan, from its Commencement to its Close;

      London: Thomas Brooks, 1843. London: Thomas Brooks,, 1843. A General Sketch of the Policy, and the Various Circumstances which induced the British Government to interfere in the Affairs of Affghanistan. From the Journal and Letters of an Officer High in Rank, and who has served Many Years in the Indian Army. Edited by … with an Introductory Description of the Country, and its Political State previous to the War. Octavo. Recently rebound in terracotta cloth with the original cloth from the spine, with gilt title, and upper board, with panel in blind, mounted, pale cream endpapers, the originals at the front, renewed at the rear. Portrait frontispiece of Sir Robert Sale, folding map of Afghanistan. Neatly rebound, the mounted cloth somewhat rubbed and faded, frontispiece spotted and with a couple of chips at the fore-edge, some professional repairs to the folds on the map, text-block lightly browned and with the occasional spot of foxing, but overall very good. First edition of what was probably the first serious attempt at a complete history of the First Anglo-Afghan War. Uncommon, COPAC has BL, NLS, SOAS, Oxford and Cambridge only, OCLC adds just the National Library of South Africa and BnF. Purports to be based on the papers of a senior officer; "In transmitting you my disjecta membra of the Affghan War, my reasons for not putting my name to which you are aware of, I may observe that I lay no claim to any striking novelty either of incident or style, but so many misrepresentations have been scattered abroad and so much misconception exists upon the subject, that I have certainly have endeavoured, regardless whom it may offend, so that I be not unjust, to place the blame of our ill-success in the main objects of the war, and of our disasters at Cabool, upon the right shoulders" (Preface). A perfectly serviceable copy on an extremely elusive title.

Meiner Tochter Tochter will ich schreiben [...]

        A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive, Being a Connected View of the Principal Evidence, and the Methods of Scientific Investigation. In Two Volumes. 2 vols.

      London, John W. Parker, 1843. 8vo. 2 uniform contemporary half calf bindings with five raised gilt bands to gilt spines. Marbled edges. A nice and tight set with only minor wear to extremities. Vol. 1 with tiny damp-stainin to upper margin, barely affecting but a little bit of the end-papers and the first three leaves - here only the top blank margin, far from affecting any text. Blank leaves a bit brownspotted, otherwise also internally very nice and clean. (2), XVI, 580; (2), XII, 624 pp. Bookplate of "Reginald Dykes Marshall" to inside of both front boards.. The scarce first edition of what is probably Mill's greatest book, an epochal work in logical enquiry, not only for British philosophy, but for modern thought in general. "Mill's most important work in pure philosophy was his "System of Logic", which he began at the age of twenty-four and completed thirteen years later" (D.S.B. IX:383).By the first quarter of the 19th century, the theory of logic had been almost overlooked in the English speaking world for centuries. Logic was practiced merely as an academic study on traditional lines, with Aristotle as the great master, but with Mill and some of his contemporaries this was about to change, and Mill's theory of terms, propositions, the syllogism, induction etc., greatly affected 19th century English thought. The many years that Mill allowed himself to work on his "System of Logic" allowed him to be inspired by a number of important steps that were made towards the development of the theory of logic in order to fulfill his groundbreaking work. Mill's main concern as a philosopher was to overrule the influence of the sceptical philosophers and provide science with a better claim to truth. A main breakthrough in Mill's Logic was thus his analysis of inductive proof, and his originality on this point cannot be denied. "We have found that all Inference, consequently all Proof, and all discovery of truths not self-evident, consists of inductions, and the interpretation of inductions: that all our knowledge, not intuitive, comes to us exclusively from that source. What Induction is, therefore, and what conditions render it legitimate, cannot but be deemed the main question of the science of logic - the question which includes all others. It is, however, one which professed writers of logic have almost entirely passed over. The generalities of the subject have not been altogether neglected by metaphysicians, but, for want of sufficient acquaintance with the processes by which science has actually succeeded in establishing general truths, their analysis of the inductive operation, even when unexceptionable as to correctness, has not been specific enough to be made the foundation of practical rules, which might be for induction itself what the rules of syllogism are for the interpretation of induction... " (A System of Logic, Vol. 1, p. 345) . With his demonstrative theory of induction, Mill reduced the conditions of scientific proof to strict rules and scientific tests. He provided the empirical sciences with formulae and criteria that played as important a role to them as the formulae of syllogism had done to arguments that proceeded from general principles. The laws that Mill established are discovered with his famous "eliminative methods of induction", which later figured prominently in controversies about scientific method.Mill's Logic came to found a new strand in the theory of logic, logic as incorporated in a general theory of knowledge, where the whole is rendered more precise by its definite reference to the question of proof. According to Mill the ultimate elements of knowledge are subjective entities, however, knowledge does have objective validity. "Logic alone can never show that the fact A proves the fact B; but it can point out to what conditions all facts must confirm, in order that they might prove other facts. To decide whether any given fact fulfils these conditions, or whether facts can be found which fulfil them in any given case, belongs, exclusively, to the particular art or science, or to our knowledge of the particular subject." (Introduction, § 3, p. 11). The work underwent several editions, and Mill kept changing it considerably. The first edition is said to have been printed in a small number, less than 1.000

        The Mystery of Marie Roget

      , 1843. 1843. [the first "real crime"] In: THE LADIES' COMPANION; a Monthly Magazine embracing Every Department of Literature. Embellished with Original Etchings, and Music. Volume XVIII. New-York: William W. Snowden, 1843. Bound in early (assuredly original with the first buyer) embossed cloth boards with his name on a leather label on the front cover, with later black leather spine and corners. First Appearance of this famous mystery by Poe, complete in the three issues of November 1842, December 1842 and February 1843. Snowden's Ladies' Companion was patterned after Graham's and Godey's, and was in existence from 1834 to 1844 (with Snowden as editor for all but the final year, at which time Lydia Sigourney and others took over). This Volume XVIII consists of the eight monthly issues from November 1842 through April 1843 (continuously paginated), preceded by the title page and preliminary leaves which were provided with the final issue; curiously, the preliminary Index leaf states "From October 1842 to May 1843 inclusive" which is one month off. Buyers of the monthly issues were thus encouraged to take them to their local binder to have the issues bound up for better protection -- which is what we have here, a binding contemporary with publication (though with the spine and corners later renewed).~"The Mystery of Marie Roget" is here sub-titled "A Sequel to 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue,' because like that earlier one, it features detective Auguste Dupin -- generally regarded as the first detective in literature and a major influence upon the creation of a certain Sherlock Holmes almost fifty years later. Furthermore "Marie Roget" is regarded as the first murder mystery to be based upon the details of a real crime -- the disappearance and death of Mary Cecilia Rogers in 1841. When Poe wrote this tale, it was with the knowledge that that widely-followed but still-unsolved death would help his tale's popularity; in fact he mentions that case at the beginning of this tale. The reason that the third and final installment was in the February and not the January issue, was that a newspaper article came out in late November putting forth new evidence that Mary might have died of a botched abortion; Poe took the time to amend his tale to allow for that.~This tale's next appearance, and its first publication in book form, would be in 1845's TALES -- which also included many of the other great Poe tales such as "The Gold Bug," "The Black Cat," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "A Descent into the Maelstrom," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter."~This volume is in near-fine condition (the leather spine and corners being relatively new), with the old leather label on the original-cloth front cover matching that owner's signature on a front flyleaf. The many engraved plates (not involved with the Poe tale) are in quite nice condition; some leaves toward the rear have a dampmarked corner, but there is very little foxing on text or plates.
