Narrative of a Journey to Kalat, including an Account of the Insurrection at that Place in 1840; and a Memoir on Eastern Balochistan

      Richard Bentley, 1843-01-01. Richard Bentley, 1843-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Later 19th-century 1/2 leather binding. Solid binding and cover. A few scuffs. xii, 463, [1] pages. 8vo. Large folding lithographed map in front. Small closed tears at base of map. Volume 4 of 'Narratives of Various Journeys in Balochistan, Afghanistan and the Panjab including Residence in Those Countries from 1826-1838.

James Lewis's account of his journey through Afghanistan and Pakistan. Lewis wrote under the pseudonym, Charles Masson. In this classic travel account of Balochistan, (far Western Pakistan), Lewis gives a first-hand analysis of the political events, his personal experiences there, the manners, history, and customs of the peoples and tribes. Lewis served as a British East India Company soldier and explorer. He deserted his regiment at Agra in 1827 and assumed the name Charles Masson. Lewis (now Masson) wandered the region and was explored much of Afghanistan, Persia and Pakistan. Masson served in a variety of posts for the British East India Company and British government, while continuing his ground breaking archeological work. Masson was involved in much of the turmoil in Afghanistan and Balochistan. In 1840 he was imprisoned by the British Political Agent, Lieutenant Loveday at Kalat and later used as a rebel messenger at Quetta. He was arrested as a traitor and spy by the British in Quetta but released in 1841. His admonition against the policies of the East India Company in Afghanistan appeared to be proven true after the disastrous British losses in the first Anglo-Afghan war. An important account.

First edition. 8vo. 16 pp. Sewn as issued. In half blue morocco slipcase and chemise. Fine. Ashley V, p. 64; Granniss Shelley, pp. 43-44; Wise Shelley, p. 46 . According to Wise: "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. My own opinion is that no original ever existed, that the private impression of twenty copies was a myth, and that Rodd's so-called facsimile reprint of 1843 is in fact the actual princeps of the Address." Political essay arguing that the death of Princess Charlotte in childbirth was "a private grief," while the execution of three weavers for high treason in Derbyshire was a national tragedy. "The execution of Brandreth, Ludlam, and Turner is an event of quite a different character from the death of Princess Charlotte ... It is a national calamity that we endure men to rule over us, who sanction for whatever ends a conspiracy which is to arrive at its purpose through such a frightful pouring forth of human blood and agony. ... Fackelzug von ca. 150 Mitgliedern des Corps durch die Münchner Innenstadt am 5. Juni 1882, im Hintergrund die Frauentürme.

      . Ölbild von Cajetan Schweitzer, dat."5. VI. (18)82", 34 x 41 cm.. Der Fackelzug fand statt zum Gedenken an das verstorbene Copsmitglied cand. med. Heinzelmann. Der Münchner Stadtarchivar Ernst von Destouches (1843 - 1917) schreibt über dieses Ereignis in seiner handschriftlich verfaßten Münchner Stadtchronik am 5. Juni 1882: "Heute Abend (5. Juni 1882) brachte der S.C. der Corpsstudenten an der hiesigen Universität seinem kürzlich verstorbenen Kommilitonen, dem Angehörigen des Corps 'Bavaria', cand. med. Heinzelmann, einen solennen Fackelzug, der sich vom Akademiegebäude durch die Kaufinger-, Wein-, Theatiner-, Briennerstraße über den Maximilians- und Karlsplatz, die Sonnenstraße, Sendlingerthorplatz zum südlichen Friedhof, und von da zurück auf den Sendlingerthorplatz bewegte, wo die Fackeln unter den Klängen des "Gaudeamus" zusammengeworfen wurden. Die Zahl der Korpsstudenten ist zwar bedeutend zurückgegangen, der Fackelzug - in den vier Musikcorps eingetreten waren, die abwechslungsweise Trauermärsche exekutirten - war aber immerhin ein imposanter, es hatten sich ca. 150 Fackelträger betheiligt." Fotokopie dieses hs. Chronikeintrags liegt bei. - Der Malkarton auf Leinwand aufgezogen. Farbenfrohe nächtliche Szene, mit locker-impressionistisch aufgetragenen Lichtern. Sehr dekorativ in breite alte Waschgoldleiste gerahmt.

        The Bible in Spain; Or, The Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments of an Englishman, in an Attempt to Circulate the Scriptures in the Peninsula

      Philadelphia - James M. Campbell, 1843. Philadelphia - James M. Campbell, 1843 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of Borrow's extremely popular guide to Spain, in a fine binding. First Edition. The Bible in Spain is the most famous work of George Borrow (1803-1881). It wasextremely popularand ran through several editions, even outselling Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843). The work is unique among contemporary books describing Spain because it relates numerous unusual personal encounters Borrow had with Spaniards, from the prime minister to beggars, and frequent encounters with gypsies. This was the first widely-read book with accurate first-hand information on gypsies (though a more complete description is found in his first work The Zincal (1841), which was not a commercial success). All this took place during the Carlist Civil War, during which time few foreign people traveled in Spain. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart with just some shelfwear and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Light foxing throughout. Offsetting to several pages. Some tidemarks to the lower margins of the pages. Faint signature to titlepage. Small tears to fore-edge of p. 181, not affecting the text. Overall: VERY GOOD..

      [London: Reprinted for Thomas Rodd, Great Newport Street (Compton & Ritchie, Printers, Middle Street, Cloth Fair), c. 1843] - According to Wise: "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. "The execution of Brandreth, Ludlam, and Turner is an event of quite a different character from the death of Princess Charlotte . It is a national calamity that we endure men to rule over us, who sanction for whatever ends a conspiracy which is to arrive at its purpose through such a frightful pouring forth of human blood and agony. . Liberty is dead!" Uncommon First edition. 8vo. 16 pp. Sewn as issued. In half blue morocco slipcase and chemise. Fine. Ashley V, p. 64; Granniss Shelley, pp. 43-44; Wise Shelley, p. 46

        History of the War in Affghanistan, from its Commencement to its Close;

      London: Thomas Brooks, 1843. London: Thomas Brooks,, 1843. A General Sketch of the Policy, and the Various Circumstances which induced the British Government to interfere in the Affairs of Affghanistan. From the Journal and Letters of an Officer High in Rank, and who has served Many Years in the Indian Army. Edited by … with an Introductory Description of the Country, and its Political State previous to the War. Octavo. Recently rebound in terracotta cloth with the original cloth from the spine, with gilt title, and upper board, with panel in blind, mounted, pale cream endpapers, the originals at the front, renewed at the rear. Portrait frontispiece of Sir Robert Sale, folding map of Afghanistan. Neatly rebound, the mounted cloth somewhat rubbed and faded, frontispiece spotted and with a couple of chips at the fore-edge, some professional repairs to the folds on the map, text-block lightly browned and with the occasional spot of foxing, but overall very good. First edition of what was probably the first serious attempt at a complete history of the First Anglo-Afghan War. Uncommon, COPAC has BL, NLS, SOAS, Oxford and Cambridge only, OCLC adds just the National Library of South Africa and BnF. Purports to be based on the papers of a senior officer; "In transmitting you my disjecta membra of the Affghan War, my reasons for not putting my name to which you are aware of, I may observe that I lay no claim to any striking novelty either of incident or style, but so many misrepresentations have been scattered abroad and so much misconception exists upon the subject, that I have certainly have endeavoured, regardless whom it may offend, so that I be not unjust, to place the blame of our ill-success in the main objects of the war, and of our disasters at Cabool, upon the right shoulders" (Preface). A perfectly serviceable copy on an extremely elusive title.
