Icones Piscium, or Plates of Rare Fishes. Part I [all published].

      R. & J.E. Taylor, London 1843 - Folio, with five beautiful hand coloured plates; the text unopened; some very faint marks, a handsome copy in the original printed paper wrappers, manuscript correction, as always, "five" to front wrapper, with the printed "four" struck through; housed in a cloth solander case. Fish caught on HMS Beagle. Very rare: the first separately published work on Australian fishes, in exemplary original condition. The particularly beautiful plates are after 'drawings from the portfolio of James B. Emery, Esq., late first lieutenant of the Beagle surveying vessel employed on the western coasts of Australia'. James Barker Emery (c.1794-1889) joined the Royal Navy in 1808 and was first lieutenant aboard the Beagle during her survey of the Australian coast from 1837 to 1841. Eleven of the species figured here were taken off the north-west coast, the other from Safety Bay in South Australia. This work was produced by Sir John Richardson, who recognised the terrific amateur talent of Emery. Richardson achieved his fame as surgeon and naturalist on the two arctic land explorations led by John Franklin. He went on to a career as a great ichthyologist, editing many mid-nineteenth century natural history works. In his later career (Richardson was still helping the third Franklin expedition at 60 years of age) he became the Chief Medical Officer at Haslar Hospital. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Folding engraved frontispiece in each volume (slightly creased, light spotting), 76 full-page plates, and numerous engraved illustrations in the text, all after Frederick Catherwood (some occasional spotting). Contemporary half straight-grained morocco over marbled boards (front cover of volume one detaching, joins weak, some wear at extremities). Provenance: Bookplate of Mabel Choate; Burndy Library and Dibner Library (Smithsonian Institution Libraries) bookplates to front pastedown of both volumes. First edition of Stephens's companion volume to "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan" first published in 1841: "Stephens provided accurate, detailed descriptions of the ruins, and he was the first to establish that the many Mayan sites were part of a single civilization that existed up to the time of the Spanish conquest and that the Indians were the direct descendants of that civilization" (ANB). These two volumes contain the important engravings of Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854): "In 1836 he met the American traveller John Lloyd Stephens, who was attending Burford's panorama of Jerusalem Stephens and Catherwood developed plans to bring their travel and architectural expertise to bear on American antiquities. Rumours of cities lost in the Central American jungles had circulated since the 1820s, when the Spanish colonies won their independence and non-Hispanic European travellers visited the region in increasing numbers. In September 1839 Catherwood signed a contract with Stephens to illustrate the ruins, with Stephens supplying the written narrative [I]n October 1839, he and Stephens at once set out for the ancient Mayan city of Copan, which lay in a remote valley near independent Honduras's northern boundary with Guatemala. They arrived in November and commenced the first large-scale survey of Mayan ruins, visiting such other Mayan sites as Quirigua in Guatemala and Palenque in southern Mexico. Catherwood cleared away the entangled vegetation covering the ruins to enable the use of his camera lucida. At Palenque, despite suffering from malaria contracted within a month of his arrival in Central America, he made maps and over fifty drawings "In June 1841 Stephens published Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan, which instantly earned the authors great accolades on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the historian William H. Prescott, Catherwood's copious and compelling illustrations clinched the book's success Stephens and Catherwood soon recommenced their explorations, turning their attention now to the Yucatan peninsula. They arrived in October 1841 bearing with them a daguerreotype machine, one of the first brought to Mexico In June 1842 Catherwood and Stephens returned to New York, taking the daguerreotypes with them, among the first archaeological photographs produced in Spanish America. Tragically all were lost in a fire on 31 July that consumed Catherwood's Rotunda; several priceless Mayan monuments removed by Stephens and Catherwood were also destroyed. The sketches made from the daguerreotypes, however, appeared in Stephens's Incidents of Travel in Yucatan (1843)" (Robert D. Aguirre for DNB). Mabel Choate (19??-1958) was the daughter of noted New York City lawyer Joseph Hodges Choate, who owned the Naumkeag estate in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Mabel took over much of the design decisions after her father's death in 1917, and assumed full control after her mother's death in 1929. Now a non-profit museum (since Mabel's death in 1958), Naumkeag is known for its extensive gardens, which were first designed in the late 1880s by Nathan Barrett, and replanned and expanded by noted landscape designer Fletcher Steele in collaboration with Mabel between 1926 and 1956.

In 1838 Roberts made a long tour in the East, and accumulated a vast collection of sketches of Middle Eastern scenery which had been hardly touched by British artists before, and which appealed to the public with all the charm of novelty. The next ten years of his life were mainly spent in elaborating these materials. In February of 1839 he travelled to the Holy Land via Suez, Mount Sinai and Petra arriving in Gaza, and then on to Jerusalem. He ended his tour by spending several months visiting the biblical sites of the Holy Land, and finally returning to England at the end of 1839. Shortly after the first printing in London by David Roberts and Louis Haghe, a French version of the book was published in Brussels with the plates lithographed by F. Stroobant. folio Vues & monuments, title and 60 tinted lithographed plates (30 full page and 30 half page).

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

A few scuffs. xii, 463, [1] pages. 8vo. Large folding lithographed map in front. Small closed tears at base of map. Volume 4 of 'Narratives of Various Journeys in Balochistan, Afghanistan and the Panjab including Residence in Those Countries from 1826-1838.

James Lewis's account of his journey through Afghanistan and Pakistan. Lewis wrote under the pseudonym, Charles Masson. In this classic travel account of Balochistan, (far Western Pakistan), Lewis gives a first-hand analysis of the political events, his personal experiences there, the manners, history, and customs of the peoples and tribes. Lewis served as a British East India Company soldier and explorer. He deserted his regiment at Agra in 1827 and assumed the name Charles Masson. Lewis (now Masson) wandered the region and was explored much of Afghanistan, Persia and Pakistan. Masson served in a variety of posts for the British East India Company and British government, while continuing his ground breaking archeological work. Masson was involved in much of the turmoil in Afghanistan and Balochistan. In 1840 he was imprisoned by the British Political Agent, Lieutenant Loveday at Kalat and later used as a rebel messenger at Quetta. He was arrested as a traitor and spy by the British in Quetta but released in 1841. His admonition against the policies of the East India Company in Afghanistan appeared to be proven true after the disastrous British losses in the first Anglo-Afghan war. An important account.

According to Wise: "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author had printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed; no trace of it beyond Rodd's own statement has ever been discovered; and no mention of any kind either of its printing or distribution is to be found in the correspondence of Shelley or any of his friends. My own opinion is that no original ever existed, that the private impression of twenty copies was a myth, and that Rodd's so-called facsimile reprint of 1843 is in fact the actual princeps of the Address." Political essay arguing that the death of Princess Charlotte in childbirth was "a private grief," while the execution of three weavers for high treason in Derbyshire was a national tragedy. "The execution of Brandreth, Ludlam, and Turner is an event of quite a different character from the death of Princess Charlotte ...

Sehr dekorativ in breite alte Waschgoldleiste gerahmt.

The Bible in Spain; Or, The Journeys, Adventures, and Imprisonments of an Englishman, in an Attempt to Circulate the Scriptures in the Peninsula

Philadelphia - James M. Campbell, 1843. Philadelphia - James M. Campbell, 1843 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of Borrow's extremely popular guide to Spain, in a fine binding. First Edition. The Bible in Spain is the most famous work of George Borrow (1803-1881). It wasextremely popularand ran through several editions, even outselling Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843). The work is unique among contemporary books describing Spain because it relates numerous unusual personal encounters Borrow had with Spaniards, from the prime minister to beggars, and frequent encounters with gypsies. This was the first widely-read book with accurate first-hand information on gypsies (though a more complete description is found in his first work The Zincal (1841), which was not a commercial success). All this took place during the Carlist Civil War, during which time few foreign people traveled in Spain. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart with just some shelfwear and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Light foxing throughout. Offsetting to several pages. Some tidemarks to the lower margins of the pages. Faint signature to titlepage. Small tears to fore-edge of p. 181, not affecting the text. Overall: VERY GOOD..
