        Caiphas. Looking Towards Mount Carmel.

Moon, F.G., London 1843 - The Prints of David Roberts:Part 1 - The PrinterLouis Haghe (1806-1885) was one of the most skillful exponents of the tinted lithograph who became a leading reproductive lithographer in England and on the Continent. Haghe's reputation as a lithographer was primarily based upon topographical views, of which Twyman notes "his most important work of this kind, the translation of Roberts' sketches of the Holy Land, represents the culmination of his art".Part 2 - The Publication of Roberts' Holy Land and EgyptRoberts first sketched in his journals "on the spot" the vaious subjects which, on returning to London, he transcribed into finished paintings and watercolors. These then formed the basis of the lithographs drawn and printed by Louis Haghe. It is interesting to note that in some instances Roberts' original drawings were twice or three times the size of the published print, which indicated the skill of Haghe and his assistants in transferring Roberts' designs onto lithographic stones.Part 3 - A Genesis of Roberts' PrintsDavid Roberts fulfilled a boyhood dream by visiting the East and recording what he saw there; by August 1838 he had resolved to "visit the Holy Land, and make drawings of the scenes of sacred history and the antiquities of Egypt". By this time Roberts had already established himself as a successful topographical artist and published his set of Spanish scenery as tinted lithographs, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, 1837. Eventually he would be elected to the prestigious Royal Academy on the strength of his topographical paintings.Part 4 - The PlatesRoberts' Holy Land and Egypt project has been called "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographic plates" (according to Micheal Twyman). Its production involved over 600 lithographic stones used over an eight to nine year period. It is generally agreed the lithographers Day & Haghe were the most efficient for such large scale work, while Louis Haghe himself was a master lithographer. The plate formats strongly influenced their presentation as prints: large full-page and small half-page vignettes representing what Roberts intended to be the difference between finished drawings and sketches. roberts was a good judge of accurate transposition of his watercolors and sketches into lithography.Today historians regard Roberts' Holy Land and Egypt as the last link between the established artist and topographical lithography. Since Roberts' prints were the most costly publishing venture in Britain at the time, undertaken by a publisher "on his own responsibility", Roberts sighed on its completion: " . thank God . that with being blessed with health and backed by my ever esteemed friend Louis Haghe I may also say the most satisfactory."References:Micheal Twyman, Lithography, 1800-1850, London, 1970Katherine Sim, David Roberts, London 1984J.R.         Farmer's Journal for 1843 with entries about Millerites (Seventh Day Adventists) and The Great Comet

Bradford, Massachusetts, 1843. Journal. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 12 leaves (24 pages) of manuscript journal entries interspersed with The New England Almanack, for the Year 1843 and bound inside a stiff paper wrapper. Soundly bound; legible handwriting; light wear. Emerson's entries, although concise, are exceptionally interesting. Using one leaf for each month of the year, Emerson lists daily weather and family/farm happenings on the front page and then summarizes significant events on its reverse. Highlights include - January-February: "Miller or Second Advent meeting began quite an excitement. 30 & 31 (January) Excitement has turned into a delusion. Men of good position begin to confess that they sold water for Rum, and a great many other crimes too numerous to mention. Many of the converts loose their strength and shout Glory to God I'm happy, and others will respond. They are more like children than persons of commonsense. It must be all Delusions. . . . The 15th of this month (February) the second Advents expected the world would be burnt with Fire and Brimstone." March: "Shot a Racoon. There has been 44 inches of snow this month it has been the coldest March that I ever knew. . . . A comet (The Great Comet) has been seen for about a fortnight in the South West has a very long tail." April: The snow is gone except where it is drifted considerable in the woods. . . . Winter rye never looked better. . . . The water has been very high and a great many bridges are damaged." July: The greatest crop of Hay that has been for a number of years. . . . A general time of health except the Tyler Feaver (a debilitating influenza epidemic that ranged from New England through Pennsylvania named for the then President John Tyler) and that does not kill anybody." September: "A great many sick this month with Slow Fever (Brucellosis, a very serious illness cause by ingesting milk or meat from infected animals). Not short of 30 in town principally in the vicinity of the North Meeting House - not many deaths." Many other entries about farm life (eg., killing a 907 pound hog, building a shed, installing a sink), health (eg., rheumatism), visits, visitors, etc.

Die Wiedererzeugung der Knochen nach Resektionen beim Menschen. Nebst einer tabellarischen Uebersicht aller Resektionen welche seit 1821 om k. Juliusspitale zu Würzburg gemacht worden sind.

      - Zweite Auflage. The Experience of George A. Spywood

[Middleton, Massachusetts?: Charles H. Pelton, Printer?. 1843?]. Edition unknown. Small octavo. String-tied wrappers. 28pp. Stains and small nicks to the front wrap else a sound, very good copy. Autobiographical pamphlet by a Warwick, Rhode Island-born man claiming Native-American lineage (specifically that his father was a Pumham and his mother a Marshpee). The stated purpose of the pamphlet was to attempt to raise $80 to pay his debts. Spywood happily pursued the sailor's trade until after several voyages his friend, the captain, took ill and died. He later renounced his vices and took to the ministry after a vision. In 1844 he was given the pastorship of the Colored M.E. Church of Hartford, Connecticut, and took an active part in precipitating the schism of the A.M.E. Zionists from the Weslyans. It is possible that Spywood fabricated his Native American heritage for the purposes of this pamphlet, anticipating more sympathy if he hid his African ancestry. Perhaps more likely is that he was of mixed Native American and African ancestry. Carter G. Woodson references him as a Bishop in the Zionist faction in his study The Negro Church without referring to his ethnicity, and he is mentioned in several other histories of the Church. OCLC locates a single copy with the above publishing information, but this issue appears complete (collating 1-28pp., with separate wrappers) and contains no printing information. While we obviously have a vested interest in establishing the precedence of this version of the pamphlet, we strongly conclude that this copy has the feel of fulfilling the object of a mendicant pamphlet, and is likely both earlier than the 1843 version, and may indeed be unique. In any event it is rare. .

        CONTES DU TEMPS PASSÉ

Paris: L. Curmer, 1843. n. Hardcover. Fürstenberg-Beraldi Copy of Engraved Fairy Tales, One of the Most Beautiful Books of the 19th Century. 273 x 184 mm (10 3/4 x 7 1/4"). lii, [86] pp. Preface and biographical note by M. E. La Bédollierre. SPLENDID NAVY BLUE MOROCCO, ELEGANTLY GILT, BY CUZIN (stamp-signed on front doublure), covers framed by multiple gilt rules with large fleuron cornerpieces, raised bands, spine heavily gilt in compartments with central leafy tool and volute cornerpieces, gilt titling, BEAUTIFUL CITRON MOROCCO DOUBLURES, VERY LAVISHLY GILT, with intricately tooled frame and cornerpieces enclosing a prominent filigree lozenge with a central oval containing the figure of Puss-in-Boots, marbled free endpaper and flyleaves, all edges gilt. In a (slightly chafed) suede-lined chemise backed with citron morocco and a matching morocco-trimmed slipcase. The main text ENTIRELY ENGRAVED by Blanchard and profusely illustrated with extra pictorial title, nine full-page vignette section titles, and 86 vignettes in the text, all engraved on copper. (Without the interleaved tissue guards called for by Ray.) A Large Paper Copy. Verso of marbled flyleaf with engraved bookplate of Albert Wander dated 1932 and with ex libris of Hans Fürstenberg; front flyleaf with morocco bookplate of Henri Beraldi (see below for all). Carteret III, 462-64; Ray 231; Henri Beraldi Library III, 1934, No. 372 (this copy). A SUPERB COPY--entirely clean and fresh internally, with a strong reluctance to open, and in a flawless binding. A work entirely engraved on thick papier vélin, this is a celebrated achievement among illustrated books of the 19th century, offered here in a sparkling copy sumptuously bound by Cuzin. First published in 1697, "Tales of Long Ago" is also known as the Mother Goose tales, and includes such favorites as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and Puss-in-Boots. Perrault (1628-1703) reworked traditional folklore into sophisticated fairy tales for the denizens of the intellectual salons of Paris, ending each story with a (usually cynical) moral in couplets. He is credited with inventing the fairy tale genre, and the Brothers Grimm--not to mention Walt Disney--profited greatly from his oeuvre. Carteret points out that in addition to its artistic merits, the work is also more difficult to find in fine condition than other illustrated books of the period. Many copies were read to death by their juvenile audience, so a pristine copy like the present one is very uncommon. The work of the binder Cuzin, who died in 1890, was so well known and so highly esteemed that he was responsible for establishing what was called the "Cuzin style." Devauchelle says that this style was copied by Cuzin's colleagues, but was never equalled; the Cuzin tradition was sustained in its finest form by his celebrated successor Emile Mercier (who signed bindings from this period "Mercier s[uccesseu]r. de Cuzin"). At the same time that he was known for a particular elegant style, Cuzin was not afraid to be unconventional; lot #123 in the Courtland Bishop sale is a Cuzin binding described as being in "contemporary ivory colored human skin." (The sale catalogue description also contains the macabre understatement, droll in its clinical dispassion: "Books bound in human skin are very rare.") The elegant binding and unbelievably fine condition of our copy are appropriate in light of its provenance. Jean (Hans) Fürstenberg (1890-1982) put together one of the finest collections of 18th century French books ever assembled. Henri Beraldi (1849-1931) was perhaps the most distinguished and knowledgeable writer on French bindings of the 19th century; it is clear that the two men had equally refined taste, as seven of the books in the 1965 exhibition drawn from the riches of Fürstenberg's collection had been owned by Beraldi as well. Our third owner was Dr. Albert Wander (1867-1950), the Swiss pharmacist who invented Ovaltine.
