        The Steamer Yellow-Stone on the 19th April 1833. Das Dampfboot Yellow-Stone am 19th April 1833. Le Bateau a Vapeur Yellow-Stone le 19 Avril 1833.

Ackermann London; Paris 1843 - Aquatint engraving with fine later hand-colouring by Karl Bodmer for the illustrated 'Travels in the Interior of North America between 1832-34' by Prince Maximilian Alexander Philipp Zu Wied-Neuweid, published in two volumes by Ackermann in London 1843. At the foot of each plate is the studio stamp, a blind embossed panel with the words 'C Bodmer/Direct'. Dimensions: 360 by 430mm. (14 by 17 inches). Tableau 4. Above Jefferson City, Missouri, on April 18, 1833, ten days upstream from St. Louis, the steamboat carrying Prince Maximilian and Karl Bodmer encountered an area of the river so densely packed with driftwood that it could go no further. Maximilian recorded in his journal entry for the day that they stopped for several hours, while members of the crew attempted to cut through the snags, and others on the riverbank pulled the boat along by large hawsers or ropes. Unfortunatley that afternoon, the Yellow-Stone ran aground again on a large sandbar and was forced to remain stationary, overnight. The next morning a party of traders in a flatboat from nearby Fort Osage arrived to offload part of the ship's cargo to lighten its draft. Bodmer waded ashore to make this sketch of the scene. From the illustrated 'Travels in the Interior of North America between 1832-34' by Prince Maximilian Alexander Philipp Zu Wied-Neuweid, published in two volumes by Ackermmann in London 1843. The finest work on American Indian life and the American Frontier, it is the result of an epic journey which took place at a time when the mass migrations of settlers and pioneers was about to alter irrevocably the unspoiled West. Karl Bodmer (1809-1893) was engaged by Prince Maximilian (already famed for his earlier explorations in Brazil) to provide a record of his travels among the Plains Indians of North America during 1833-34. His efforts show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely thorough, accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. The most important part of their travels started from St Louis, whence they proceeded up the treacherous Missouri along the line of forts established by the the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux Tribe, learning and recording their little known ceremonial dances, their powerful pride and dignity. Transfering from the 'Yellow Stone' to another steamer the 'Assiniboine', they continued to Fort Clark, studying there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow Tribes, then the Cree and Assiniboine tribes at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana. Established over a month there a cautious friendship developed with the fearsome Blackfoot Tribe. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and, especially, the people, who were often intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for capturing individual personalities, as well as forming, together with Prince Maximilian's written studies, the primary accounts of what became virtually lost cultures.         Die Wiedererzeugung der Knochen nach Resektionen beim Menschen. Nebst einer tabellarischen Uebersicht aller Resektionen welche seit 1821 om k. Juliusspitale zu Würzburg gemacht worden sind.

. Zweite Auflage. Geneva, Jules-Guillaume Fick, 1868. 8vo. With 20 separately printed woodburytype illustrations: photomechanical reproductions of drawings, 10 full-page, mounted on inserted leaves of heavy paper as plates, and 10 smaller, mounted on the text leaves. Contemporary polished green gold-tooled calf, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Rebacked in green cloth with the original backstrip laid down.

Bibl. of Australian lit. III, p. 305; Boom & Rooseboom (eds.), A new art: photography in the 19th century, B265; Ferguson 12251. First edition, in the original French, of Marcet's fictional narrative of life in Queensland, remarkably illustrated with mounted photomechanical reproductions of drawings made by the fine but short-lived woodburytype process. Edouard Marcet was a Swiss settler in Queensland, who also published two factual accounts of life in the colony. The present work includes descriptions and illustrations of dramatic encounters between settlers and the aborginal people. It further describes Queensland's natural history, including the platypus, which is shown in two illustrations. Several of the drawings reproduced are signed by the artists: G. Liquier, perhaps meaning the French artist Gabriel Liquier (1843-1887), later known for his caricatures, and the Swiss landscape artist Etienne Duval (1824-1914). A Swedish translation, adapted for children, was published in 1870.In very good condition, with only some spotting. Binding expertly rebacked and with some scratches and discolouration, but otherwise also very good. A fascinating fictional account of life in Queensland, illustrated by drawings reproduced by the remarkable woodburytype process.

Moon, F.G., London 1843 - The Prints of David Roberts:Part 1 - The PrinterLouis Haghe (1806-1885) was one of the most skillful exponents of the tinted lithograph who became a leading reproductive lithographer in England and on the Continent. Haghe's reputation as a lithographer was primarily based upon topographical views, of which Twyman notes "his most important work of this kind, the translation of Roberts' sketches of the Holy Land, represents the culmination of his art".Part 2 - The Publication of Roberts' Holy Land and EgyptRoberts first sketched in his journals "on the spot" the vaious subjects which, on returning to London, he transcribed into finished paintings and watercolors. These then formed the basis of the lithographs drawn and printed by Louis Haghe. It is interesting to note that in some instances Roberts' original drawings were twice or three times the size of the published print, which indicated the skill of Haghe and his assistants in transferring Roberts' designs onto lithographic stones.Part 3 - A Genesis of Roberts' PrintsDavid Roberts fulfilled a boyhood dream by visiting the East and recording what he saw there; by August 1838 he had resolved to "visit the Holy Land, and make drawings of the scenes of sacred history and the antiquities of Egypt". By this time Roberts had already established himself as a successful topographical artist and published his set of Spanish scenery as tinted lithographs, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, 1837. Eventually he would be elected to the prestigious Royal Academy on the strength of his topographical paintings.Part 4 - The PlatesRoberts' Holy Land and Egypt project has been called "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographic plates" (according to Micheal Twyman). Its production involved over 600 lithographic stones used over an eight to nine year period. It is generally agreed the lithographers Day & Haghe were the most efficient for such large scale work, while Louis Haghe himself was a master lithographer. The plate formats strongly influenced their presentation as prints: large full-page and small half-page vignettes representing what Roberts intended to be the difference between finished drawings and sketches. roberts was a good judge of accurate transposition of his watercolors and sketches into lithography.Today historians regard Roberts' Holy Land and Egypt as the last link between the established artist and topographical lithography. Since Roberts' prints were the most costly publishing venture in Britain at the time, undertaken by a publisher "on his own responsibility", Roberts sighed on its completion: " . thank God . that with being blessed with health and backed by my ever esteemed friend Louis Haghe I may also say the most satisfactory."References:Micheal Twyman, Lithography, 1800-1850, London, 1970Katherine Sim, David Roberts, London 1984J.R.
