Von Karl Richard Lepsius. Originalgetreuer Faksimilereprint Saarbrücken 2014.

Auguste-Henri DUFOUR (1798 - 1865).
Paris: Bulla Fre?res, 1842. Copper engraving with original outline hand colour, dissected into 12 sections and mouthed upon original linen, bearing contemporary German label to verso ‘Insel Cuba’ (Good, some noticeable areas of staining and discolouration, fine original outline hand colours, contemporarily trimmed to outer edge of neatline), 63.5 x 91 cm (25 x 36 inches). CUBA: Carta topografica de la Isla de Cuba compuesta par A.H. Dufour geografo. The first edition of an excellent separately issued large format map of Cuba, one of the finest representations of the island from its last great sugar boom; compiled by the leading French cartographer Auguste-Henri Dufour from the best official Cuban sources and published in Paris; with symbols and statistical tables detailing a wealth of information. This is the first edition of Auguste-Henri Dufour’s stellar large format map of Cuba, a valuable artefact showcasing the island during its last great sugar boom. The finely engraved map showcases Cuba in great detail; the island and is divided into three departments, outlined in original colours, which are further divided into governates (yellow lines) and bishoprics (red lines). All cities, towns and village of any importance are noted, while all roads of various levels are delineated. Importantly, dozens and ‘haciendas’, being major plantations, are named; sugar (and slavery) were still the lifeblood of the Spanish colony’s economy. The map is embellished by finely detailed inset plans of Cuba’s major cities, including Havana (lower left corner); while in the lower right corner … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Richard Peters
Stereotyped by L. Johnson, Philadelphia. The 1842 1st edition of the report of this seminal case brought by "slavecatcher" Edward Prigg against Pennsylvania, a case which not only directly took on the legal question of States' rights (or their reach) to participate in the enforecement of capturing escaped slaves but also redefined the current thinking on the very rights of fugitive slaves. A solid, presentable copy, in its original dark-brown boards, with still-bright gilt-titling along the spine. Loss of roughly 2" (including just a bit of loss to the titling) at each spine end, light staining --and just a touch of very light bubbling-- to the front panel. Light foxing to the preliminaries and copious, scholarly notes --along with a former owner (A.G. Dana) 1844 signature-- in a neat hand along the pastedowns and front free endpaper respectively. Octavo, a significant piece of Americana, as well as an important example of the history of the Supreme Court and of the institution of American slavery. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

De Smet, Pierre-Jean et al.
Vienna: 1842. First Edition. 8vo. (200 x 130 mm). 88 pp. + 1 folding letterpress table recording donations. Original blue printed wrappers. Very good. Father De Smet's First Mission to the Flathead of Montana in 1840, and other Western Americana. In this unassuming and almost completely unknown journal are many communications from Catholic missionaries to North America, including is a forgotten 25-page letter from Pierre Jean De Smet, S.J. , describing his first mission to the Flathead in western Montana. This marks the beginning of one of the longest-lived Catholic missions to Indians in the United States. The Flathead had petitioned the Church for years to send a "Blackrobe," and De Smet was received with enthusiasm. The present letter contains a good deal of information not published elsewhere. De Smet wrote this letter to his bishop, Rosati of St. Louis; it is different from the letter he wrote to the Jesuit Superior General Jan Roothan that was subequently published in the "Annales de la Propagation de la Foi." Is was inexplicably omitted from De Smet's "Letters and Sketches: With a Narrative of a Year's Residence Among the Indian Tribes of the Rocky Mountains" (1843). ¶ This 15th issue of the "Berichte" is futher interest as it contains two letters (14 pages) from Francis Patrick Kenrick, bishop of Phildelphia, describing in detail the growth of Catholicism in Pennsylvania, particularly the ministry to the continuing influx of Germans; brief letters from the new bishops of Natchez (John Chanche) and Vincennes, Indiana (Célestine de la Hailandière). DORR REBELLION] DOGERTY, Roger [pseud. Effingham Lawrence?
Providence? n.d., ca. 1842. First Edition. Lengthy poem "dedicated to the three tail Bashaw of Tripoli, and all the Barbary Powers," recounting the history of the Dorr Rebellion from a Dorrite's perspective, albeit unflatteringly. The rebellion of middle class citizens of Rhode Island, led by Thomas Wilson Dorr in 1841 and 1842, turned out to be an unsuccesful bid to expand enfranchisement in the state--at the time voters were required to be white, male, and own at least $134 in property. Attributed to the Louisiana politician Effingham Lawrence, later known for holding the shortest tenure in Congress, from March 4 to March 5, 1875 (see Susah H. Graham, "Call Me a Female Politician" (2006), p. 204, citing the inscription on a copy of this poem). SABIN 80868. Octavo (23cm.); publisher's brown pictorial side-stitched wrappers; 8pp. Wrappers a bit chipped and worn at extremities with brief splitting at previous horizontal fold, light soiling to both wrappers, else a Good or better copy of a quite fragile item. [DORR REBELLION] DOGERTY, Roger [pseud. Effingham Lawrence?]
Providence: , n.d., ca. 1842. Providence, n.d., ca. 1842. First Edition. Paperback.

Lehuby, P.C. (Publishers).
Paris -1843. Ten volumes complete in miniature bookcase, 1842. A beautiful juvenile item being a miniature glazed bookcase, possibly mahogany, size 20 x 11 cm, with a glazed door and an ebonized carved surround, pediment (minor loss), and four feet, containing ten volumes in the series Bibliotheque Special de la Jeunesse. The cloth (or papered?) covers are bright and extremely attractive, in either black or blue cloth, and with slight rubbing to edges, occasional sl wear, and a few spots, they have been preserved in VG condition in this bookcase. The titles are (briefly) : Lecutres en Famille par M Renal; Contes Les Enfants de Cinq a Six Ans; Modeles Des Enfants par Pierre Blanchard; Les Enfants Studieux; Les Encouragements du Premier Age par M. Renal; Douz\e Historiettes par madame Delarbre; Emilie, par Eug. Niogret; Savez-Vous Lire ? par Mm. De Thainville; Quinze Jours De Bonheur par M. De La Madeleine; and Laure ou La Jeune Emigree. Some volumes are signed by the publisher on front endpaper. The key is lacking, and the rather sturdy glass may - or may not be - an old replacement. However, it is rare to find such a delicate juvenile item from this period so complete and relatively undamaged. A most charming item. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

On the 13th of Nov., 1840, I was at a place called Fulton City, on the upper waters of the Mississippi river, waiting for the descent of some steamboat in which I might take passage. About day-break the next morning a boat was hailed, and I went on board. The bustle of embarkation was hardly over before I learned that the boat was owned and principally manned by Mormons, being called Nauvoo. It moreover carried Joseph Smith, Jr., in the character of passenger; although in the reality he was chief director of the whole concern. London: Chapman and Hall, 1842. First edition, first issue, with p. [x] misnumbered xvi, etc. [12], 308; vii, [i], 306, [6, ads]pp. 2 vols. 8vo. First edition of Dickens' brilliant, unflattering, and controversial (especially in America) account of his travels in America, along with De Tocqueville's Democracy in America one of the most famous and important accounts of the new republic from a period which seemed fascinated by the new nation's experiment. Dickens was less than enchanted by what he saw, yet nevertheless dedicated his book to "...those friends of mine in America, who, giving me a welcome I must ever gratefully and proudly remember, left my judgement FREE; and who, loving their country, can bear the truth, when it is told good humouredly, and in a kind spirit" Smith II, 3. Charles Dickens
1842. For sale is a rare First Issue of the First Edition set of American Notes for General Circulation, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1842. Two Volumes. Complete. All of Smith's First Issue points here present. Bound in the publisher's original horizontally-ribbed brown cloth, with decoration in gilt to the spines, and in blind to the boards. Externally they remain in most pleasing order; the cloth and tooling exceedingly crisp and fine. Predictable extraneous rubbing and marking in places, and the odd small nick and split to the hinges; these, however, remain very firm. Internally, aside from the odd spot, they are as clean and fresh as one could hope for. Overall, this is a rare title, and possibly the cleanest we have handled. The original bindings are a joy to see, and this set could not come more highly recommended. [Attributes: First Edition]

It is datelined, "Factory Island, Grand Bassa / July 13th 1842". It is addressed to Benjamin Coates in Philadelphia and bears an octagonal "6" arrival handstamp. The letter is intact; however, splits are starting along several folds. Otherwise in very nice shape. Wesley Johnson was a member of the Young Men's Colonization Society of Pennsylvania and served as the governor of its Grand Bassa Colony in Liberia until his organization merged with the American Colonization Society in 1838, after which he became the Superintendent of Liberia's only high school under the patronage of the Ladies' Liberia School Association of Philadelphia. Benjamin Coates was a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, the Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, and a strong proponent of colonization. (For more information, see the Annual Report of the American Colonization Society for 1845 and Lapsansky-Werner's "Back to Africa: Benjamin Coates and the Colonization Movement" in the Spring 2007 edition of Quaker History.) DORR REBELLION] DOGERTY, Roger [pseud. Effingham Lawrence?]
n.d., ca. 1842, Providence. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
