RARE SPANISH SEA CHART OF PUERTO RICO "Carta Particular Esférica y Corográfica de la Isla de Puerto-Rico y las adyacentes que á la misma pertenecen, Vieques, Culebra, Caja de Muertos, Mona, Monito y Descecheo..." Rare separately published chart of Puerto Rico, drawn by Miguel Moreno and engraved by C. Noguera with lettering by M. Giraldos. Published by the Spanish Hydrographical Office in Madrid, in 1842. Size (plate mark): 62 x 93 cm. This chart of Puerto Rico depicts the topography of the island in fine detail. The island is divided into seven districts, which are identified at top left. Along the coasts, several ports, ravines, bays, river mouths, and more are located. The chart extends to show nearby island-municipalities Vieques and Culebra. Off shore shoals are shown, along with soundings, anchorages and other sailing details. An inset at bottom left provides a simple depiction of Isla de Mona (located off the west coast of Puerto Rico). The island's first lighthouses are market with a hint of colour. A key at the bottom indicates the symbols for towns and cities of various sizes as well as different soil types. The Dirección de Hidrografía, or the Directorate of Hydrographic Works, was established in 1797. Its roots were in the Casa de Contratación, founded in 1503 in Sevilla, which housed all the charts of the Spanish Empire and oversaw the creation and maintenance of the padrón real, the official master chart. The Casa, now in Cadiz, was shuttered in 1790, but Spain still needed a hydrographic body. In response, the Dirección was created in 1797. One of …

A superb immaculate copy: internally virtually pristine, with crisp, clean pages and without previous ownership markings; binding tight, the hinges perfectly preserved, gilt fresh and bright, covers unblemmished. Scarce thus. Listing note: "Not one of Dickens' books was the subject of so much adverse criticism as the book he wrote after his return from America in 1842" (Eckel). Although complimentary of the United States in many ways, Dickens antagonised a large portion of his readership by his criticisms of the penal system, the lack of copyright and subsequent pirating of English works, and the entire system of slavery. DICKENS, Charles
London: Chapman and Hall, 1842. First edition, first issue. Two volumes. 8vo. (xii), 308; (viii), 306, (6) pp., a few gatherings unopened. Publisher's blind stamped cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, early armorial bookplate of a Henry Birkbeck to the front pastedowns and his lightly pencilled ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of volume I, the discreet contemporary ticket of the bookseller Fletcher of Norwich to the front of the same volume. Some fading to the spine, a very small superficial split to the cloth at foot of the lower joint of volume I, though it remains sounds and the set is very good overall. The result of a four month lecture tour of the States and Canada during which Dickens' opinions of the new world fell steadily. On his return it proved popular on this side of the Atlantic while American reviews were unanimously hostile, Emerson noting "Truth is not his object for a single instant.". Dickens composed a mollifying Preface which was removed at the last minute and not published until after his death. In it he states "I went there expecting greater things than I found. Coming home with a corrected and sobered judgement, I consider myself no less bound to do justice to what. I found to be the truth". Smith, II, 3. [Attributes: First Edition]

ROBERTS, David.
London. 1842-9. Size: 328 x 488 mm. Very good condition. Unobtrusive blind stamp. Tinted lithograph. Additional hand colouring. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas. F.G. Moon. Sketches in Egypt and Nubia, from Drawings made on the Spot. Abbey, Travel, 272; Gay 2216; Ibrahim-Hilmy, II, p.176; Lipperheide 1591; Tooley (1954) 402.

Verlags-Comptoir des Nueun Gesangbuchs, Stuttgart, 1842. First edition. Leather ruled in giltand inset with a glass-bead decorated floral pattern on the front and rear boards. Later gift inscription in German, modest rubbing and wear at the corners, slight foxing, a very good plus copy. Apparently a songbook prepared for the 25th anniversary of the reign of the King of Wurttemberg, printing lyrics with a title index, an index of composers, and brief biographical information. Notable mostly for the very unusual binding of tiny glass beads worked into with floral patterns on a black background, with beads of blue, gold, and green, surrounded by a stylized leaf pattern in two shades of green. A few of the tiny beads are missing at the margins, but the decoration is sound and stable, and is otherwise unflawed. An unusual binding, and a lovely book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BURNES, Sir Alexander.
London: John Murray, 1842. London: John Murray,, 1842. Bokhara Burnes Octavo. Original slate green fine diaper-grain cloth, gilt-lettered spine with blind banding, sides with ornamental blind paneling, pale primrose yellow-coated endpapers. Single-tint lithographic frontispiece and 5 similar lithographic plates, one plain lithographic portrait printed on India paper and mounted, 2 folding lithographic plates of antiquities, a steel-engraved portrait of Burnes by Edward Finden after Daniel Maclise, and 2 wood engravings. Neat contemporary ownership inscription at head of title page, "W. Henderson". Binding a little rubbed, a few old marks to covers, back cover slightly mottled, inner hinges neatly strengthened, some foxing, large dark bloom of foxing in gutter at head in the early part of the book, extending to about a quarter of the way through; despite these faults this remains a presentable, sound, copy in the original cloth, with the publisher's 8-page catalogue at the end (dated April 1842). First edition of this posthumously published and attractively illustrated account of the author's remarkable experiences serving as an intelligence officer in India and Afghanistan during the early days of the Great Game. Burnes excelled at political work. His linguistic ability combined with adventurousness, boundless self-confidence, and a certain diplomatic guile earmarked him for delicate political duties. Throughout the 1830s political opinion in London and Calcutta worried increasingly about Russian expansion in central Asia and Burnes seemed the ideal man to gather infor … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

LAWRENCE, Henry Montgomery.
Some passages in the life of an adventurer in the Punjab. Originally published in the Delhi Gazette.Delhi, Gazette Press, by Kunniah Lall, 1842. 8vo. With a loosely inserted letterpress printed "Note by the publishers" declaring that in hindsight the publisher would have preferred this edition in larger dimensions and in 2 volumes, but the printer lacked understanding of "the art of book printing". Also included is a manuscript note with bibliographical information relating to Indian printing. Contemporary half red roan with gold-tooled title on spine, marbled sides. [IV], [III], 275 pp. First edition of one of the first titles published by the Gazette Press in Delhi and printed by Kunniah Hall. The content is a collection of articles that were previously published in the Delhi Gazette, written by Brigadier-General Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence. He was an advocate for the independence of Punjab and died while defending that in Lucknow, earning the nickname "Lawrence of Lucknow". The book offers a wealth of information on the Punjabs in the form of fictionalised memoirs of Colonel Bellasis, providing many hardly known details about the region and people to the Western reader. Therefore it is of great importance. The present first edition is very rare, WorldCat only offers 3 copies worldwide and we traced 2 more copies in Oxford and the British Library. From the library of Edward Thornton (1799-1875), with his owner's inscription on the front paste-down. Thornton was East India House Officer and author of The History of the British Empire in India (1842). Spine restored with t … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Disbound. Very good. RARE. First American issue. Also published, "On asphyxia, and on the resuscitation of still-born children," London Medical Gazette, vol. 29 (5 November 1841): pp. 222-27. / Between 1839 and 1841 Snow experimented with a guinea pig, suffocating the creature and then beginning a dissection. He found that an hour after death that he perceived a "slight vermicular motion in the right auricle. He opened the trachea and began artificial respiration. The heart's ventricles began to move, and through the coast of the left atrium (the chamber that receives blood from the lungs) he could see oxygen-rich, bright red blood. The heart continued to contract weakly, unable to expel blood from its chambers, but it kept beating rhythmically for forty-five minutes. … This particular experiment took place in the course of his investigations into respiration and asphyxia, undertaken with the desire to establish the physiological basis for pulmonary resuscitation on infants." Snow was witnessing one in twenty births being stillborn, many of whom were asphyxiated. Many methods of resuscitating were tried, including electrical shock, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, etc. "Snow surmised that the line between life and death was not fixed, and the heart retained its irritability (its ability to be stimulated by oxygen) beyond death." With this study done, Snow's recommendation was to … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

During a short stay in Paris in 1871, he contacted the Paris printing firm Lemercier for the lithographs in his Chile ilustrado. PHILOSOPHY] PHILOKALIST [pseud. Felix Paul Wierzbicki
E.P. Peabody, 1842. First Edition. Attributed to Wierzbicki, the Polish-American veteran of the November Uprising during the Polish-Russian War and later a Forty-Niner best known for publishing the first English-language book in California, "California As It Is and As it May Be; or, A Guide to the Gold Region" (1849). This title attributed to him in the Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous English Literature (see OCLC no. 2777123), the Preface signed "F.P.W., Rhode Island" (p. 4) and the title submitted to Congress by a J.P. I wish to afford those present an opportunity of judging for themselves as to the real facts of the cases free from all partiality or bias on my part as the offering of this new agency. / [...] to be / very respectfully / yours / Jas Braid" The present letter dates from a period of active discovery and public debate about the topic of Hypnotism, a term coined by James Braid (1795-1860), "the founder of modern hypnotism," a couple of months earlier. It is here rendered as three distinct words, "Neuro Hypnotic operation."During magnetist Charles Lafontaine's English tour of 1841, Braid was allowed, as a medical man, to examine the magnetised subjects and he witnessed that the phenomena was not being faked, determined to study the nature of the effects and their causes. Braid immediately began auto-experimentation at home that refuted the idea of an operator's 'magnetic influence,' but confirmed that the process did indeed generate a 'particular physiological state.' Braid began a series of five public lectures to exhibit his findings just one week after Lafontaine's last demonstration. He was attacked as a necromancer and satanic agent in April 1842, in a well-att … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Buchanan, James
Washington, D.C., 1842. 2 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Laid into a green cloth chemise. 2 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Reading in part, "In regard to Mr. Tyler's measures of nomination; I feel every disposition to support both when I can do so without a violation of principle; but I cannot approve his Exchequer project. Indeed it has but few, -very few friends in either party. As it was originally presented by the Secretary of the Treasury (Walter Forward), I considered it more dangerous if possible than a National Bank ... Nothing has yet authentically transpired of the character of Lord Ashburton's negotiations. He is very pacific in his conversation; I have no doubt he sincerely desires to preserve the peace between the two countries, but we cannot yet form any decided opinion at what may be the results ... One of the greatest evils under our system is the unreasonable length of the sessions of Congress. We have now been in session nearly six months and the House have not yet begun to consider the tariff question ..." Tyler's Exchequer Project was a plan presented to Congress in December, 1841, which envisioned a public banking institution directed by a non-partisan Board of Control. "Lord Ashburton's negotiations", conducted with Daniel Webster, ha adopted a compromise northern boundary of Maine.

DUMAS, Alexandre)
Richard Bentley. 1842. Functionally bound in later dark green half calf, green cloth boards, paper labels; worn & repaired. SCARCE. La Comtesse de Salisbury, 1839. An unacknowledged translation of one of Dumas' earliest historical novels. It is set in the Court of Edward III during the earlier stages of the Hundred Years War. The dedication, to Thomas Moore, is signed 'E.R.M. London, April, 1840'; perhaps the translator, but not identified. The third volume, despite having The Countess of Salisbury on the titlepage, contains, as issued, a separate novel, also an unacknowledged translation of a Dumas work: The Maid of Corinth. The French title is Acté, first published in 1838. This appears to be a re-issue of the first English edition of 1840, with newly printed titlepages which for some reason do not mention the second work. No 1842 edition appears on Copac, though four copies of an 1840 edition are listed with the title as The Countess of Salisbury : to which is added, The Maid of Corinth. Dumas is not identified as the original author. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
