PLEASANT COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

A fine Australian view from a series of tinted lithographic plates (published as Sketches in Australia), of Sydney and Harbour areas, mountains and southern coastal regions of New South Wales, "drawn from nature" by Captain Westmacott.Little is known of Westmacott, except that he was a captain in the 4th (King's Own) Regiment, and that he spent the early 1840s in Australia. Edinburgh on Friday, May 29, 1863, Edinburgh: 18638vo.24pp. The five items bound together in contemporary green cloth, cloth slightly mottled, internally very clean.Lee (1779-1859), Church of Scotland minister and University Principal, was one of the principal figures in Scottish intellectual life.In 1820 Lee became professor of moral philosophy in King's College, Aberdeen and in 1841 he was elected Principal at the University of Edinburgh. He was a "keen bibliophile, who collected a library of 20,000 volumes. In John Hill Burton's The Book Hunter (1862) he appeared as Archdeacon Meadows, a bibliomaniac who would buy several copies of a book which he owned already, and then, forgetting this, borrow a copy of the same book from a friend. But Lee's love of books was not a selfish one: in the 1820s he led a successful campaign to overturn the exclusive rights of the royal printers to print the Bible in Scotland, as their editions proved to be too expensive for the common man" [O.D.N.B.].

1842. 2 1/3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-4to. Wissen - was beides groß in ihm war. A., Bd. - "Tante Lewy", d. i. Sarah Levy (geb.

"One of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing and [...] the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, p. 341). Roberts' masterpiece was issued in 41 parts over seven years, beautifully lithographed by Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts paid tribute in glowing terms: "Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone." - After an apprenticeship to the Scottish house-painter, Gavin Buego, David Roberts (1796-1864) became assistant scene painter at the Pantheon theatre in Edinburgh. He continued scene painting in Glasgow and finally, in 1821, was hired to work with Clarkson Stanfield at the Drury Lane theatre in London. In 1838 he made plans for a journey to the Near East, inspired by his passion for artistic adventure. He departed in August 1839 for Alexandria and spent the remainder of the year in Cairo and visiting the major tombs and sites of Egypt. The following February he journeyed to the Holy Land, making stops in Suez, Mount Sinai and Petra. He spent time in Gaza before entering Jerusalem and concluded his tour by spending several months visiting the biblical sites of the Holy Land. Roberts returned to England at the end of 1839 and submitted his drawings to F. G. Moon in 1840. Moon arranged to bring out a volume of Scripture history, paying Roberts 3,000 pounds for the copyright of the sketches and for overseeing Haghe's efforts. Both the exhibition of his original watercolours and the subsequent published work were an immediate success and confirmed his reputation as an architectural and landscape artist of the highest order. - Bookseller label of James Rimell, London, to pastedown. While not strictly contemporary with the date of issue, the colour in the present copy would appear to have been applied within the nineteenth century. The binder has altered the positioning of some of the plates to accommodate the original six volumes within the four-volume format. A very clean copy, occasionally showing the barest traces of foxing. A stunning set, and an economical alternative to the near-unobtainable luxury copies in hand colour issued by the publisher (a recent example, unbound in loose sheets, commanded $242,500 at Christie's in 2012).         Autograph letter signed. Dresden, 20. IX. 1842.

1842. Large 4to. 1 p. To an undisclosed recipient, i. e. Karl Theodor von Küstner (1784-1864), director of the court theatre at Berlin, on the proposed world premiere of "Der Fliegende Holländer" ("The Flying Dutchman"), which was accepted for staging by Küstner's predecessor Count Redern by recommendation of Giacomo Meyerbeer. Since Redern and Küstner had both omitted to give a concrete date for staging, Wagner is now asking Küstner to tell him the current state of affairs. Moreover, he informs him that his "Rienzi" will be staged at Dresden within the next month, and invites him to visit the performance in case that he stays at Dresden at that time. - One month after this letter, Wagner was celebrating the premiere of "Rienzi" at the Dresden Court Theatre (20 October), one of his first major successful premieres. The "Flying Dutchman" was also first staged in Dresden (January 2, 1843) under his direction. - Stromger damage to edges. WBV 271. Sämtliche Briefe Vol. 2, No. 23.

Autograph letter signed. Copenhagen, 18. IX. 1842.

1842. 8vo. 2¼ pp. on bifolium. With integral address panel. To his translator Nicolas Martin: "[...]" Shortly after having the pleasure of receiving your beautiful, interesting 'Ariel' I sent to you a letter accompanied by the German translation of one of my novels which enjoyed most success 'A musician, that's all! (Nur ein Geiger)'. One of my fellow countrymen, naval officer, was in charge but there is almost a year that I have learned nothing of the reception of the book or the letter, I thus take advantage today of the departure for Paris of one of my friends [...] I ask you to tell him if you received the sending in question, and to tell him what concerns your own literary activity. I have just published a great poetic work 'A Poet's Bazaar', which appeared in Danish, and will appear soon in German translation which I will take the liberty to send you a copy as soon as I have your address. For the dramatic productions, I have given this year at the Royal Theatre vaudeville 'The Bird on the Pear Tree', a tragedy 'Agnete and the Marine Man' [...]". At the moment, Andersen is working on another play. He spent the summer in the property of the Minister of Finance who "has the most beautiful land I know [...] Send me some news! A letter of you will make the same pleasure made by the first bird of passage to the northener [...]". - Fol. 2 (address leaf) with small tears from opening the letter, otherwise in good condition.

The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia [...]. (And:) Egypt & Nubia, from drawings made on the spot [...]. With historical descriptions by William Brockedon. London, F. G. Moon, 1842-1849.

1842. Large folio (610 x 456 mm). 6 vols. [Holy Land:] Lithogr. portrait of Roberts by C. Baugniet, 3 hand-coloured lithogr. titles, 120 hand-coloured lithogr. plates, all drawn on stone by Louis Haghe after David Roberts. [Egypt:] 3 hand-coloured lithogr. titles, 121 hand-coloured lithogr. plates, all drawn on stone by Louis Haghe after David Roberts, 1 engr. map. Contemp. citron morocco, bound by J. Wright, covers panelled in gilt, spines with raised bands in seven compartments, morocco lettering pieces in the 2nd and 3rd, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. An extraordinary set, comprising both of Roberts' monumental works on the Middle East, both in their first and most desirable hand-coloured deluxe issues. Bound in magnificent uniform citron morocco by John Wright of London. "One of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing and [...] the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, p. 341), these works were originally published in three states: as an ordinary tinted edition, a hand-coloured de luxe issue in loose proofs, and - combining the virtues of both - the almost unobtainable hand-coloured and bound de luxe issue (as here), which the publisher Moon offered at the tenfold price of the regular one. Both artists exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Royal Academy and British Institution, and by 1830 Roberts was firmly established as a topographical artist and was able to give up his work in the theatre. - Coloured sets of Roberts are generally encountered with the lithographs trimmed, coloured and mounted on card, in imitation of the original watercolours. The present set, by contrast, is comprised of the regular tinted lithographed issue but with very fine contemporary hand colouring. The palette of colouring is consistent with the colouring of the "on card" issue, and the strictly contemporary binding confirms the age of the hand colouring. This set is beautifully bound by John Wright of London in a rather unusual and striking full citron morocco. Flourishing between 1830 and 1860, Wright was among the most fashionable of London binders in this important period. Ramsden refers to Wright as "a binder of the highest order" (Ramsden, London Book Binders, p. 154). Exceedingly rare thus; a copy in the second state as described above (hand-coloured but unbound in loose sheets) commanded $242,500 at Christie's in 2012. - Provenance: the Duke of Northumberland (Property of His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland, Books from Berkeley Castle sold by order of the Trustee of the Earl of Berkeley Will Trust, Sotheby's London, 8-9 May 1986, lot 335).         La Chine et les Chinois. Paris, Couplet & Vibert (letterpress printed by Schneider & Langrand and the lithographs by Lemercier, Bernard & Co.), 1842.

1842. Imperial folio (385 x 555 mm). 26 pp. text. With lithographed title-page (textual), tinted lithographed title-page (illustrational), 2 lithographed dedication leaves, lithographed list of plates and 32 tinted lithographed plates on 25 leaves, by Eugène Ciceri after drawings of Borget. Contemporary half tanned sheepskin, cloth sides; recased, with modern endpapers. First edition of a series of 32 magnificent views of China after drawings by the notable French artist Auguste Borget (1808-77), who travelled through Asia from 1838 to 1840, including views in the area of Hong Kong (4), Macao (13) and Canton (12). "The feeling of superiority to the Chinese, so characteristic of accounts from the 1840s, is absent here. The artist observes with a fresh eye" (Lust). Explanations to all views are found in the letterpress text in the form of letters by Borget. A second edition in English was published in the same year as Sketches of China and the Chinese. - Washed, but with some foxing still visible; professionally restored tears in the margins both title-pages and plates 1 and 4 and more crudely restored tears in the letterpress text leaves; a fair copy, the illustrations are however still in very good condition. Binding restored and recased and with most of the leaves mounted on new stubs. Rare. Abbey, Travel 540. Cordier, Sinica, 79f. Cf. Lust 2111 (English ed.). Not in Walravens.

Des Colonies françaises. Abolition immédiate de l'esclavage. Par Victor Schoelcher.

Paris. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary half blue sheep. Rare first edition of one of the first works by the famous abolitionist Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893). In the 1830s, he went to America, and saw what slavery was. Soon after, he became a militant abolitionist; he was the first European who went to Haiti after her independence. His works (including the present one) are based on what he saw in the colonies, and played an important part in the abolition. At the end of the present one: proverbs and expressions in Creole. Pleasant copy, very fresh. Sabin, 77745.

Northern Star, 1842, Book Condition: Good Condition, First Edition. Full Book Title: CHARTIST PRINT. Procession Attending the Great National Petition of 3,317,702 to the House of Commons, 1842. With Members of the National Convention. With T. Duncombe. Esq, Presenting the Petition [to the House]. With 16 vignettes of places the procession passed by. Published as a supplement to The Northern Star, Chartist newspaper. A striking and rare contemporary print of the great Chartist National Petition being taken through the streets of London. Clearly visible are the Chartists demands on the Petition being carried aloft, and banners held by members of the 50,000 people procession, with "Reform" and "More Pigs and Less Parsons" quite central. With over 3 million signatures this represented close to a third of the country's entire population. The right hand panel shows the Members of the Chartist National Convention, with the faces of most individuals clearly drawn and identifiable, and just in the background two women. The left hand panel shows Thomas Duncombe MP presenting the petition to Commons and just in front of the Speaker's Chair can be seen the piles of sheets of the petition having failed to get the box from the procession through the doors of the Commons. The little vignettes of famous London landmarks are perhaps a suggestion of authority and power seen alongside the power and importance of the Chartists demands in the much larger views. In total, the whole print measures 63 cms in length, by 36 cms tall. It has some browning and foxing, a tear at the right margin, extending into the print, but without loss. It has been mounted to the back with archival tissues to preserve the shape and prevent further damage. An incredibly rare survivor of an ephemeral piece. Size: 63 x 36 cms.. Quantity Available: 1.         [ORIGINAL INK DRAWING OF NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE, BY UNITED STATES NAVY LIEUTENANT JOHN B. DALE]

[New Castle, De, 1842. Ink drawing on a 9 1/4 x 12 1/2-inch sheet. Small chip in lower left corner, small crease in upper left corner. Near fine. An accomplished pen and ink drawing of New Castle, Delaware, made by United States Navy lieutenant John B. Dale. The drawing is captioned, in Dale's hand, "New Castle, Del.," and though undated, was likely made around 1842, when Dale was stationed in Washington, D.C. and participating in the U.S. Coastal Survey. The scene shows the skyline of New Castle, with many distinguishable steeples, towers, and multi-story buildings. Several ships are seen in the waters of Delaware Bay, on the right side of the drawing. Lieutenant John B. Dale was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1814 and appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy in 1829. He was one of three artists assigned to the United States Exploring Expedition, the pioneering scientific exploration commanded by Charles Wilkes that lasted from 1838 to 1842. During that voyage Dale butted heads with the famously irascible Wilkes several times, and was sent home half-way through the expedition. Nonetheless, many of Dale's drawings appear in the official published account of the expedition. He was married in 1840 and had two sons. From 1844 to 1846, Dale was a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides") during its circumnavigation of the globe. Dale died in Lebanon in 1848, while on duty in the Mediterranean as part of the Lynch Expedition. Dale's manuscript journal of his cruise aboard the Constitution is in the collection of the New England Historical Genealogical Society. An attractive view of an historic Delaware city, by a talented artist who also participated in notable American naval expeditions.

Voyage dans l'Amerique du Sud 1864-1865.[Various places in South America], 1864-1865]. Oblong 1mo (ca. 33.5 x 52 cm). Album with 98 watercolours (the majority ca. 20 x 33 cm) mounted on the thick album leaves and mostly signed with monogram "E", titled and dated in ink on the mounts. Contemporary blind- and gold-tooled green sheepskin (Maison Alphonse Giroux, Paris).

On Quesnel: Numa Broc, Amérique, p. 269. Album with spectacular watercolour views of many places in South America, painted by Edouard Quesnel (1842-1891). In June 1864, Quesnel undertook a voyage to South America and toured Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay before returning home to Le Havre in April 1865. He recorded his impressions in the present album of watercolours and in a series of letters addressed to his mother. The correspondence was published posthumously as Souvenirs de Voyage (Rouen, 1892). Quesnel's letters often refer to the sketches he is making. His remarks suggest that he based the watercolours in present album on those field sketches. (Souvenirs, pp. 115-116). Quesnel succeeds in painting precisely and at the same impressionistically, combining topographical exactness with very subtle nuances of light and colour. But he doesn't just reproduce the landscape, he also records his own, personal perception, reflecting the subjective experiences of a Frenchman travelling through South America in the 1860s. Little is known of Quesnel's work beyond the present album and a large album of French landscapes. With occasional minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition. Part of the inside front hinge has come loose and there are a few small scuff marks, but the binding is otherwise very good. Splendid views of South America, made on a voyage in 1864 and 1865.
