Front cover with wood engraved image of the Hospital. 12mo. 7-1/8" x 4-13/16" Now the Royal Brompton Hospital, the hospital is the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the United Kingdom."The hospital was founded in the 1840s by Philip Rose, the first meeting to establish the Hospital was on 8 March 1841. It was to be known as The Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest. It amalgamated on 25 May 1841 with The West London Dispensary for Diseases of the Chest, which was based at 83 Wells Street, near Oxford Street. Little is now known about the Dispensary. On 28 March 1842, an out-patients branch of the hospital was opened at 20 Great Marlborough Street. Later that year they acquired a lease on their first building for in-patients at The Manor House, Chelsea, which held space for 20 beds and the first in-patients were admitted on 13 September 1842. Admittance was to be by the then customary method of recommendation by the Governors and subscribers. Manor House remained in use as a convalescence home after the hospital had moved to the Brompton site.In common with other hospitals at the time, the hospital was to be financed entirely from charitable donations, legacies and fund raising. Rose travelled the country to explain the aims of the hospital, setting up 14 provincial associations, 157 churches promised to preach special sermons as a means of fund raising. The famous singer, Jenny Lind also gave concerts, including one at Her Majesty's Theatre in July 1848, which raised £1,606. Besides Philip Rose, the early supporters included William Augustus Guy, Charles Dickens, and Queen Victoria, who became a patron, with an annual subscription of £10." [Wiki]The booklet comprised of a list of personages associated with the hospital [p. 2], "Appeal" [pp. 3 - 4], "Report of the Public Meeting on the 25th May, 1841. (Taken from the Notes of the Reporter to the Morning Herald)" [pp. 5 - 15] & "Donations and Subscriptions to The Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest."         Uncut pair of Nauvoo House Association stock certificates

Nauvoo, IL, 1842. unbound. Nauvoo House Association $50-$100 Stock Certificates (Uncut Pair). This variety listed as Nyholm 46 and Rust 31. A complete uncut sheet dating from the early 1840s from the second issue of stock to build a Mormon-sponsored hotel in Nauvoo, Illinois. It should be noted that Joseph Smith placed the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon in the cornerstone of the building in 1841. Construction was stopped in 1844 in order to concentrate on building Nauvoo Temple. Condition: This example is well centered with above average margins on all four sides. There are two pin holes in the margins that might very well be guide marks. The corners appear sharp but we do notice two minor distractions in the margins of the $50 note. A view of Bala-Hissar Fortress, overlooking Kabul, Plate 20 from "Sketches of Afghanistan" by James Atkinson. Besides these drawings he also published his diary, as ' The Expedition into Affghanistan', also 1842, in which he compared the British invasion to the Stone of Sisyphus.

Poems, Chiefly of Early and Late Years

1842 - WORDSWORTH, William. Poems, Chiefly of Early and Late Years; including The Borderers, A Tragedy. London: Edward Moxon, 1842. Small octavo, original dark brown cloth rebacked with original spine laid down, later pastedowns and fly-leaves, original free endpapers. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $7800.First edition, inscribed by the poet on the title page, "Inscribed by Wm. Wordsworth, Rydal, July 4th, 1842," an association copy also signed by poet and playwright Sir Henry Taylor, the friend of Wordsworth who introduced him to the important friend of his later years, Isabella Fenwick.Published the year before he was named Poet Laureate, Wordsworth's last discrete book of verse includes "Guilt and Sorrow," "Memorials of a Tour in Italy," "Sonnets Upon the Punishment of Death" and his only play, the tragedy in verse The Borderers. With alternative title page and half title at rear, presenting the book as Volume VII of the 1836-37 collected works (previously complete in six volumes). Broughton 73. Lowndes, 2993. Also signed on the title page by George Taylor, and on the front free endpaper by his son, Henry Taylor. The reclusive gentleman farmer George Taylor (1772-1851) possessed a strong literary bent, educating his sons at home by means of his extensive library. He was an ardent admirer of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and was admired in turn by Robert Southey (who said Taylor had the "better part of an antique Roman about him"). Poet and playwright Sir Henry Taylor (1800-86), George's third son, is best known as the author of Philip Van Artevalde as well as for his work in the Colonial Office as senior clerk for the Caribbean colonies. He was on familiar terms with many of the day's leading literary figures, including Samuel Rogers, Thomas Carlyle and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Well acquainted with John Stuart Mill and the Benthamites, he invited them to personal meetings with his two close friends, Southey and Wordsworth. He also likely introduced his relative Isabella Fenwick (cousin of George Taylor's second wife) to Wordsworth around 1830. "She first signed the visitors' book at Rydal Mount in June 1831". She spent months at a time there as guest of the Wordsworths in subsequent years, and came to live in Ambleside in 1838 in order to be close to her friends at Rydal Mount" (Curtis, introduction, The Fenwick Notes of William Wordsworth, 18). Wordsworth also visited Fenwick as a respite from visitors seeking him at Rydal Mount, and allowed her to read his famous and still private Prelude in manuscript. Also with small, contemporary addressed envelope laid-in: the recto reads, "2 mementos / With a letter / Sir Henry Taylor / D.C.L. / K.C.M.G. / With greatest care," and the verso (on the flap) reads, "this to be preserved alone."Interior generally clean. Minor loss to laid-down original spine, light wear to corners and lower edges. A very good inscribed association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Die Selbständigkeit des sympathischen Nervensystems

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Haertel, 1842. Bidder, Friedrich Heinrich (1810-94) and Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann (1800-1877). Die Selbständigkeit des sympathischen Nervensystems durch anatomische Untersuchungen nachgewiesen. [4], 88pp. 3 plates. Leipzig: Breitkopf and Härtel, 1842. 267 x 211 mm. Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Some foxing and toning, but very good. First Edition. German physiologists Bidder and Volkmann performed important investigations of the sympathetic nervous system, one of the two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system responsible for regulating the body’s unconscious actions. The two “showed the sympathetic nervous system to consist largely of small, medullated fibers originating from the sympathetic and spinal ganglia ( 1318). In their investigations Bidder and Volkmann “introduced mathematical precision by inventing ways of measuring the caliber of nerve fibers, and popularized the numerical method in biological microscopy . . . [Their methods] added a new dimension to histological research, because not only was precision increased but in addition it was now possible for an investigator to test another’s accuracy” (Clarke and Jacyna, Nineteenth-Century Origins of Neuroscientific Concepts, p. 360).
