THE DIAL: A MAGAZINE FOR LITERATURE, PHILOSOPHY, AND RELIGION, VOLUME II: July 1841, October 1841, January 1842, & April 1842

Boston & London: E. P. Peabody/John Green, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Contents with light to moderate foxing; several ink and blindstamp library stamps. Binding Fine. Recently and handsomely bound, without wrappers, in half green morocco leather and marbled boards with morocco corners and gilt-lettered red and brown morocco spine labels. A prototype of the 20th-century little magazine, the DIAL was the most important American literary periodical of the 19th century and one of the scarcest with print runs never exceeding 300 copies. First edited by Margaret Fuller (1840-42) and then by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1842-44), it not only featured many of their most important works but also introduced the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Published only from July 1840 to April 1844, Volume II's four issues contain two poems by Thoreau, including his important "Friendship," later collected in his first book, as well as contributions by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody and much by Emerson including his defining piece "Transcendentalism." Page 421 has an early ink correction, possibly in the hand of the editor. Errata slip bound in before the last issue.

A fine set of the extremely rare large paper edition of this important catalogue. "The Hon. Thomas Grenville (1755-1846), after a brilliant parliamentary career, retired from public life in 1818 and devoted himself entirely to his books. He was a true bibliophile, in the highest sense of the word... When he died he left his books to the British Museum... His 20,000 volumes form the greatest gift of books that any private individual has ever made to the Museum. He had fine books of every description, but he seems to have specialised in early Americana (he was the first collector to buy Columbus and Vespucci letters), Aldines, early Spanish and Italian books (Dante, Petrarch and Ariosto), classics (especially Aesop and Homer), books on Ireland and lastly incunables on vellum, including the Mazarin Bible, the 1457 Psalter and the 1469 Livy, this catalogue, by Payne and Foss, is a lasting monument to his enlightened efforts as a collector." - De Ricci, p.114.

Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatn... New Edition

London: John Murray, Albermarle Street, 1842. Two volumes: 424, 474 p., illus., maps, plans, plates; 23 cm. In 1839, President Martin Van Buren commissioned Stephens as Special Ambassador to Central America. While there, the government of the Federal Republic of Central America fell apart in civil war. His Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatn gives a vivid description of some of those events which Stephens witnessed. Stephens and his traveling companion, architect and draftsman Frederick Catherwood, first came across Maya ruins at Copn, having landed in British Honduras (present-day Belize). They were astonished at their findings and spent a couple of weeks mapping the site. Engravings after drawings by Catherwood. Their classic account opened the study of Mayan civilization. The publisher used an inferior paper which has developed extensive spotting over 170-plus years. The 66 plates and seven text figures match the list of illustrations in each volume. Sabin 91297. Good+ despite the spotting found in all early copies. Handsomely bound in Spanish half leather. Stock#OB997.

CANADIAN SCENERY ILLUSTRATED. From Drawings by W. H. Bartlett

London: George Virtue, 1842. 2 volumes. First edition of the book called by Sabin “the finest of Mr. Bartlett’s works.” With engraved portrait frontispiece of Bartlett in Vol. I, handsomely engraved vignette half-titles, engraved map, engraved frontispiece to Vol. I and 116 fine steel-engraved plates with tissue guards after drawings by Bartlett. 4to, in the best issued bindings of full forest-green publisher's pebbled morocco richly gilt in panels of spines, with large panel of scrolled and floral gilt decoration within wide gilt rules on all covers, board edges and turn-ins gilt ruled, ribbon markers bound in each volume, a.e.g. [4], 128; [4], 116 pp. A very lovely set, the fine bindings most handsome and well preserved, the text firm and tight, some foxing to the plates, in most cases it is fairly light and minor but on a handful of others it is considerably more extensive. This foxing is normal to the book and is the only defect in an otherwise remarkably presented and preserved copy. FIRST EDITION, in the publisher’s deluxe full morocco, of the title considered by Sabin (and many others) to be William Bartlett’s finest production. It comprises scenery mostly visited by Bartlett in 1836 on one of his four voyages to North America. The engravings, produced by Willis, Cousen and others, are of splendid quality down to the finest details. Waterston called the work, “An incomparable presentation of the picturesque scenes that travellers could visit.” In spite of the great effort and care that went into the production of these magnificent plates, they are notoriously prone to foxing. In this copy most of the plates have escaped with only light foxing that is primarily confined to the margins. A number of them however do have heavier foxing that includes the image area. So fine and detailed are the engravings however that they hold up to this problem remarkably well and retain their beauty in spite of it. In his text, Willis relates both the history and current conditions of the regions visited within both upper and lower Canada throughout the Eastern Provinces. Willis’ fine prose united with Bartlett’s drawings create “a very deep impression upon the pictorial history of Canada...” - Spendlove.

        Encampment of the Aulad-Said

London., 1842-9. February, 18th 1839. Size: 425 x 605 mm. Original tinted lithograph. Additional hand colouring. Very good condition. Unobtrusive blind stamp. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas.         The City of Candahar.

      H. Graves & Co., London 1842 - London: H. Graves & Co., 1842. Sepia tinted lithograph heightened in white ca. 25 x 37 cm (10 x 14.5 inches). A very mild water stain on lower left corner, not affecting image, otherwise a very good lithograph. A distant prospect of Kandahar or Qandahar, now the second largest city in Afghanistan located in the south of the country; troops and tents and locals supplying food provisions to foreground. Besieging Anglo-Indian forces took Kandahar on April 25, 1839, on their way to Kabul. The First Anglo-Afghan War was fought between British India and Afghanistan from 1839 to 1842. From 'Sketches in Afghaunistan' by James Atkinson of the East India Company's Bengal Medical Service. Lithography by Louis and Charles Haghe. Atkinson's "Expedition into Affghanistan provides an interesting personal narrative, supplemented by his Sketches in Affghanistan (1842) containing a series of lithographed drawings which complete the picture of what was then an unexplored country. He also had a talent for portraiture, several of his works, including a self-portrait, are in the National Portrait Gallery" (Oxford DNB); Abbey Travel 508, #15.
