Moore, a lawyer, landed proprietor and diarist, arrived at the Swan River Settlement on the brig Cleopatra in 1830; over the following decades he became a large land-holder at his property Millendon and was appointed advocate-general.Less than a month after arriving in the settlement, Moore accompanied the colonial secretary on a search-party to find Aborigines implicated in a robbery. From this period on he would express sympathetic concern for the local tribes, and made a sustained effort to learn their language and understand their stories.This work is based on the preliminary studies of the explorer George Grey. Moore greatly expanded and enhanced the material, producing a genuinely descriptive vocabulary of the language in common use amongst the Aborigines of Western Australia. As with all good works of this sort, Moore's work makes fascinating reading, as it includes detailed observations regarding the habits, manners and customs of the natives and the natural history of the country.Throughout, Moore's work gives a real insight into the lives of the settlers themselves; thus 'Janjin... the native pear tree.         Cockatoo Island, Port Jackson

      Sydney,, 1842.. Watercolour, 185 x 295 mm, framed. John Skinner Prout (1805-1876) was a largely self trained artist who arrived in Sydney with his family in December 1840. He remained for several years producing many local views but his efforts to educate the population with a series of lectures on the principles of art was met with a lack of public enthusiasm which greatly disappointed him. He visited Van Diemen's Land in 1844 and was so impressed he returned to collect his family from Sydney and resettle there.On the reverse of this watercolour a contemporary hand has written in pencil 'Cockatoo Island, Port Jackson J.S.Prout 1842', But this work clearly shows Goat Island, similar in perspective to a watercolour held in the National Library Canberra. Carton Booth's Australia has steel engravings of both Goat and Cockatoo Island based on paintings by Prout and the Goat Island image looks the most similar to this view.

      London - A. Fullerton and Co., 1842 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A beautifully illustrated copy of the Christian Bible. With forty-four engraved plates, including a frontispiece to each volume and a folding frontispiece map to volume I. Also with decorative papers for family registers, left blank. With explanatory notes, practical observations, and copious marginal references by Thomas Scott, and an introductory essay and numerous additional critical, explanatory and practical notes by William Symington. William Symington was a Reformed Presbyterian (Cameronian) minister. Among the Reformed Presbyterians Symington, like his brother, was a commanding influence. A noted evangelical in the covenanting tradition, he was none the less outward-looking and deeply involved in social issues such as slavery, illiteracy, and poor working conditions. Like Thomas Chalmers, whom he in part resembled, he advocated a Scotland cleansed and dedicated. Besides his published sermons, he recorded his views in The Atonement and Intercession of Jesus Christ (1834) and Messiah the Prince (1839; reissued 1881 with memoir). The latter was an important exposition of Cameronian ecclesiological thought. (DNB)Complete in three volumes. Condition: In full morocco bindings. Externally smart, with just some marks to the boards and some shelfwear. Front joints of volumes I,II and III starting; rear joint of volume I also starting. Internally, firmly bound.         Rome Ancient and Modern and Its Environs (Four Volumes)

      Four volume set, complete. Publisher: ROME, Printed for the Author by Crispino Puccinelli. Presumed first edition since it was privately printed. Dates vary: vol 1 1842, vol 2 1844, vol 3 1843, and vol 4 1844, but a matched set. Original full vellum with red and black spine labels intact. Bookplate on fep of each volume stating that they were a gift to the Library of Villa De Chantal by Mr. Peter Connor. Faint library number in white ink near bottom of each spine. Boards attached on all volumes but there is a one inch crack at the top of the spine of vol. 4, the thickest volume. The backboard of vol 1 is beginning to show separation of a half inch top and bottom. This is an extremely rare set of early Roman history. Contains many old engravings in excellent condition.

        Description of the Skeleton of an Extinct Gigantic Sloth,

      London - R and J. E. Taylor, 1842 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The first and only edition of owens monograph on the giant sloth, based on a specimen brought back by Charles Darwin from South America. Featuringtwenty-four plates, four of which are folding, and one of which depicts the skeleton in its entirety. Each plate includes adescription to face. Collated complete. Owen states within his Introduction The collection of fossils brought to England from South America by Mr. Darwin has enabled me to add the following facts to the history of the Megatherium. The teeth of the Megatherium, for example, do not differ in number from those of the Sloths, as both Cuvier and M. de Blainville supposed; there being five, not four molars on each side of the upper jaw. Microscopic examination having demonstrated a marked difference in the intimate structure of the teeth of the Sloths and Armadillos, I have ascertained by this mode of investigation, that the teeth of the Megatherium have the same texture and composition as those of the Sloth. And if from identity of dental structure in two different animals we may predicate a similarity in their food, a glance at the bony frame-work of the Megatherium is sufficient to show that it must have resorted to other means of obtaining its leafy provender than that of climbing for it; whereby the necessity of inferring a proportionate magnitude of the trees which nourished the Megatherium is obviated. Richard Owen was an English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist. He was the driving force behind the establishment, in 1881, of the British Museum (Natural History) in London. By making the Natural History Museum an institution for everyone, Owen transformed our expectations of what museums are for. Owen helped Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins to createthe first life-size sculptures depicting skeletons, such as dinosaurs as he thought they may have appeared. Described as A masterpiece both of anatomical description and of reasoning and influence' (DNB). Condition: In moire cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Closed tear tofirst folding plateand reinforced with cloth tape. Some light offsetting. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        Tab 82 Acrocomia Microcarpa

       A wonderfully detailed chromolithograph of a tropical palm by João Barbosa Rodrigues (1842-1909) from his breathtaking book "Sertum Palmarum Brasiliensium". This book was published in Brussels in 1903. This print is of superior quality on bright, crisp paper and in good condition overall. In good condition with some foxing/staining/creasing. Director of the botanical gardens and Professor of Botany at the University of Rio de Janiero, João Barbosa Rodrigues was a highly respected scientist, researcher and illustrator who did much to advance knowledge of Brazilian natural history and habitat.  Early nineteenth-century European and American explorers had frequently mentioned the large variety of palms to be found in South America, most noted among them the German naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt.  He described the overwhelming impression made by ?that vigour and freshness of vegetable life which characterizes the climate of the tropics? and singled out a particular need for ?a large number of separate studies of the foliage of trees; of leafy, flowering, or fruitbearing stems; or prostrate trunks.?  Less that one hundred years later, João Barbosa Rodrigues answered Humboldt?s call in this, perhaps one of his finest publications, depicting the palms of Brazil.  His illustrations contain both scientific and aesthetic appeal and delineate the various stages of growth of the palm.  However, the publication is also significant in that is was completed by a native Brazilian rather than a European or American botanist and thus shows the growing interest and growth in science in both the New World as well as the Old World.

Light wear to covers, small chip out of tail of spine; yellow endpapers with some browning and occasional light brown spotting of text pages, else about fine. ________ The approbation at the front of the book indicates that it has been examined by S.A.E. Monsignor the Cardinal Prince de Croy, archbishop of Rouen and changed toexclude all that was contrary to the Catholic faith and so now can be read without danger [to young minds].         Canadian Scenery Illustrated

      London: George Virtue, 1842. 2 volumes, quarto. (10 5/8 x 8 3/8 inches). Steel-engraved portrait frontispiece of Bartlett, 2 engraved additional titles with integral vignettes, 1 map of Canada. 117 plates by R. Wallis and others, after William Bartlett (scattered minor foxing as usual). Contemporary red half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the spine gilt in five compartments with wide semi-raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second fourth compartments, the others panelled in gilt, cream moiré endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy of this well-known work: one of the greatest steel-engraved view books of the 19th century. Born in London, William Henry Bartlett "was apprenticed to the architect and antiquarian, John Britton ... Bartlett studied and copied architectural drawings of the past and present and, with Britton, visited noted ruins in England from which he made detailed sketches to be engraved for some of Brittons own publications. ... One of [Bartlett's] first major assignments was to supply illustrations for Dr William Beatties Switzerland illustrated (London, 1836), published by George Virtue... the rest of his life Bartlett's travels were extensive and continuous, and they led to illustrations for works on Syria, the Holy Land and Asia Minor, the Mediterranean coast, northern Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, the coastal areas of Britain, the Bosphorus, the Danube, the United States, and Canada ... According to Britton and Beattie, Bartlett visited North America four times: 1836-37, 1838, 1841, and 1852. From the summer of 1836 to July 1837 he was in the United States acquiring illustrations for Nathaniel Parker Willis's American scenery (1840), and in the summer and autumn of 1838 he was in the Canadas sketching for Willis's Canadian scenery illustrated (1842). Although little is known about Bartlett's itinerary in North America, a map in American scenery suggests that his travels during 1836-37 began in New York City and took him north to the White Mountains, N.H., west to Niagara Falls, N.Y., and south to Washington, D.C. His itinerary in the Canadas in 1838 and the observations he may have made also remain obscure because none of his letters from this period has been found. His route appears on a map in Canadian scenery illustrated: he seems to have travelled from Quebec City westward to Niagara Falls, and then by way of the Erie Canal to visit Willis at Owego, N.Y., before sailing for England in December 1838. No written record survives of Bartletts visit to the Maritimes. The dates of the engravings in Canadian scenery illustrated seem to indicate that he went there in 1841 after another visit to the United States ... [Bartlett's] skill in sketching architectural detail, his love for picturesque landscape, and his interest in the life of the people ... gave to his illustrations in Canadian scenery illustrated ... a historical importance that merits their survival" (Dictionary of Canadian Biography.). Two volumes in uniform contemporary full black morroco bindings with gilt stamped decoration and lettering; all edges gilt, marbled end-papers. Engraved frontispiece plate and 64 further engraved plates to vol. I; engraved frontispiece plate and 59 further plates to vol. II, plus portrait plate of Queen Victoria; engraved titles pages with vignettes to both volumes; total number of plates therefore 124 plus two vignettes title pages; letterpress title page to both volumes; list of subscribers to vol. I. Bindings very good and strong with a little rubbing to joints and eges only, small professional repair to the head of the front joint to volume I. Contents clean and tight and complete, all plates with original tissue guards, plates and letterpress remarkably clean, virtually no foxing. The plate at page 28 is not present as desribed in the list of plates, and this always seems to be the case, as it would seem it was used as the vignette title for volume II instead. A very good to fine set, exceptionally clean. The lithographs from McKenney and Hall’s HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA are not only amongst the greatest hand-coloured American illustrated plates of the 19th century, but are also an American cultural treasure providing an historical record of the portraits of the chiefs, warriors and women of the various tribes. The lithographs are faithfully produced from original oil paintings either by Charles Bird King painted from life in his studio in Washington or reproduced by King from the watercolours of the famous frontier artist James Otto Lewis as well as a few other artists.

Full fine-pebbled red calf with attractive geometric and floral strapwork design in gilt on covers, blindstamped border cross-hatch patter. Spine with raised bands and elaborate gilt floral strapwork and lettering, marbled endpapers. Dozens of full and half-page woodcut engravings by artists who later to blossom in the 1860's in book illustration, such as Paton, Tenniel, Pickersgill, Gilbert, W.B. Scott, Crowquill and others. Also of note, early engravers showcased here such as G. Dalziel, Edmund Evans, Vizetelly, and W.S. Linton. "The most ambitious English book with wood engravings during the period under suvey" (Gordon Ray). Calf binding shows slight wear along margins of spine and corners, but overall near fine, very fresh and bright. Contents clean and bright with occasional soiling and brown-toning predominantly in volume 1.

Bouchot described the result as the best satire on French manners during the middle of the century, recalling "the anger to which it gave rise, the outbursts of laughter it provoked and the lawsuits of which it ran the risk." These allusions pass largely unnoticed today, but Grandville’s animals remain as amusing as ever, thanks to the wit and verve of his compositions. The types and situations he depicts are indeed "of every period and every country." "The final plate shows the artist at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes.       Mount Vernon, Va. 1842.. Two ink drawings, as described below. Fine. An attractive duo of original ink drawings of George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, made by United States Navy lieutenant John B. Dale. One of the drawings is dated February 16, 1842, within days of what would have been Washington's 110th birthday. The drawings were likely created by Dale on a visit to Mount Vernon from nearby Washington, D.C., where he was stationed at the time and participating in the U.S. Coastal Survey. By the 1840s the estate, still in the hands of the Washington family, had fallen into disrepair and was not formally open to the public. Dale's position as a naval officer from a prominent family would have helped gain him access, and his visit demonstrates the lasting appeal of Washington's home. Lieutenant John B. Dale was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1814 and appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy in 1829. He was one of three artists assigned to the United States Exploring Expedition, the pioneering scientific exploration commanded by Charles Wilkes that lasted from 1838 to 1842. During that voyage Dale butted heads several times with the famously irascible Wilkes, and was sent home half-way through the expedition. Nonetheless, many of Dale's drawings appear in the official published account of the expedition. He was married in 1840 and had two sons. From 1844 to 1846, Dale was a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Constitution ("Old Ironsides") during its circumnavigation of the globe. He died in Lebanon in 1848, while on duty in the Mediterranean as part of the Lynch Expedition. Dale's manuscript journal of his cruise aboard the Constitution is in the collection of the New England Historical Genealogical Society. The drawings are as follow, and are captioned in Dale's hand: 1) "Washington's Tomb. Mount Vernon 16th Feb. 1842." Ink on a 4 3/4 x 6 1/2-inch sheet. A very nice view of Washington's Tomb, built in 1831 after the original burial vault had deteriorated. Washington chose the location himself, and Dale's rendering shows the full tomb, with George and Martha Washington's caskets visible inside. Contemporary reddish-brown calf over grained red boards, spine with gilt linings and gilt lettering.* Part V. of the famous work by Ramón de la Sagra on the physical, natural, and political history of Cuba. This is a very rare publication on Cuban shells (land, fresh water, and marine) with many new species finely drawn by Prêtre, and hand-coloured. There also exists a slightly later French text edition in 8vo format. Both are very rare. There are no auction records for these two parts in the last 20 years. Apparently, this copy was bound before the work was completed. The title, half-title and text after p. 216 (the description of Oliva scripta) is wanting, and so are plates 9-12, and 23-28. It is quite possible that this indicates a gap in the production, the rest being published (much) later. The missing plates however, can be provided in very good scanned reproductions. Scattered, mostly light, sometimes moderate spotting, on the plates, mostly marginal. Even in an incomplete state a great rarity and very useful for identifying Cuban and Caribbean molluscs. Cat. Very good condition. 6 7/8 x 17 3/4 inches. A very fine image from Boys' 'London As It Is': a work 'of considerable importance' (Abbey) Abbey writes of the work London As It Is from which this beautiful image comes: apart "from the beauty of its plates, it records London at a period when good pictorial records were few. The London of the 1840's is probably more difficult to reconstruct than at any other period in the nineteenth century" (Abbey Life 239). High production costs and changing fashion caused aquatint to die out, photography was still in an experimental stage, and chromolithography did not appear until 1850. Boys' work was issued with the plates tinted and hand-coloured, including Boys' name at the foot, or as here, with the plates hand-coloured mounted in imitation of watercolours, with no imprint. Boys garnered enormous prestige from this work and from his earlier, Picturesque Views in Paris, Ghent... (1839). The "accuracy of his portraits of buildings and his skill in composition have seldom been bettered" (Mallalieu Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists p.38). Cf. Abbey Scenery 239

Contemporary half red morocco over marbled paper covered boards, spines with raised bands in six compartments, black morocco lettering pieces in the second and third, the othes with a repeat armour themed decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. An excellent set of the second and best edition of Meyrick's great work on arms and armour, with beautiful plates "as fine as the monuments of Westminster Abbey" (Edinburgh Review). This set with the supplement by Skelton on the famed Goodrich Court collection. Prideaux writes that this "book is certainly superb." A contemporary review echoed this sentiment: "Sir Walter Scott justly describes this work as 'the incomparable Armoury.' 'This most superb archaeological work is animated with numerous novelties, curious and historical disquisitions, and brilliant and recondite learning - Learning going to Court in the full, rich costume of the Order of the Garter. - Plates as fine as the monuments of Westminster Abbey. Really and truly the work is admirably executed, and deserves every eulogy.' - Edinburgh Review." (quoted in Lowndes II, p.1541). First published in 1824, this work was one of the first to view the subject of ancient arms and armour from an historical perspective. The present second edition includes revised text and a new hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece to the first volume. The presentation is otherwise very similar to the first edition with both plates and initials hand-coloured and heightened with gold where necessary. As a whole the work is beautifully designed and printed. The plates and initial letters, which are expertly hand-coloured, are taken from copies of "antient [sic.] seals, illuminations, painted glass, and monuments" (preface, p.xiv), whilst the author's intention for the whole work was that it should supply 'the general deficiency of information on the subject: to throw a glimpse of light over the rugged paths of the historian, to furnish dates to the antiquary, and to give vividness of truth to the efforts of painting, sculpture, and the drama" (preface, p.xiv).         A Ramble in Malta and Sicily, in the Autumn of 1841

      London,: Tyler & Reed for Smith, Elder & Co, 1842.. Royal octavo, chromolithographic additional title by Angas, printed by M. and N. Hanhart, engraved dedication plate, 12 tinted lithographic plates by Angas, two wood-engraved illustrations; plates a little spotted else very good in original green cloth, all edges gilt. First edition of Angas' first illustrated work, published the year before he sailed for Australia. This is a subscriber's copy, signed John Abraham on the front free endpaper: there are one hundred and seventy-nine names (including 'Abraham, J. Esq.') on the list of subscribers, and one hundred and ninety-seven copies subscribed for.Angas early showed an interest in natural history and art, but as a young man took a place in a London office. He studied under the natural history artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, thanking the latter's 'new and infallible system' of drawing in the introduction to this work. In August 1841 he left on a tour of the Mediterranean, returning in November, and publishing this account of the trip less than a year later.The work features a handsome series of twelve lithographic plates, taken from his own sketches from nature and drawn by him on the stone. The letterpress is taken from Angas' journal and shows his lively and inquisitive imagination, as well as giving many descriptive details of the pictures.Now surprisingly rare, the Ramble shows Angas coming to maturity as an artist, and makes an important addition to any collection of Australian illustrated books.
