("Große Luxusausgabe"). Berlin, Paul Kittel, (1896). Quer-fol. (ca. 32 : 34,3 cm). Titelblatt u. 48 Tafeln mit 50 (46 ganzs.) farbigen, montierten Illustrationen von Carl Röchling, Richard Knötel u. Woldemar Friedrich in Chromotypie mit Tonplatte. Grüner Original-Maroquinband mit reicher Gold-, Schwarz- u. Blindprägung, aufgelegtem Porträtmedaillon u. Vollgoldschnitt (Entwurf Ludwig Sütterlin); etw. nachgedunkelt, mit einigen kl. Braunflecken u. wenigen schwachen Kratzspuren, Stehkanten etw. beschabt.

. . Ries 646,27. - Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

        A Collection of Newspaper Extracts

nbsp;Alnwick - W. Davison, 1842. nbsp;Alnwick - W. Davison, 1842 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A extremely scarce copy of these contemporary newspaper articles, beautifully illustrated with vignettes from Thomas Bewick. Printed in book form and designed to afford some amusement to those who are found of an every-day book. Hugh Dixon, reflecting on Bewick and the landscape of North-East England, wrote thatBewick's illustrated books, admired since they first appeared, gave him some celebrity in his own lifetime. His Memoir, published a generation after his death, brought about a new interest and a widening respect which has continued to grow ever since. The attraction to his contemporaries of Bewick's observations lay in their accuracy and amusement. Two centuries later these qualities are still recognised; but so, too, is the wealth and rarity of the historical information they have to offer. Condition: Nicely rebound in a half raspberry calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally sound with only some very light rubbing, and minor starting to the front joint. Some marks to the head of the front board. Internally, firmly bound and bright, with only some occasional instances of light foxing. Numerous endpapers bound into the rear. Voyage en Icarie

Paris - J. Mallet et Cie., 1842. Paris - J. Mallet et Cie., 1842 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An uncommon copy of Etienne Cabet's Communist utopian novel. Second edition. In French. Influenced by Robert Owen, Cabet wrote Voyage et aventures de lord William Carisdall en Icarie (Travel and Adventures of Lord William Carisdall in Icaria) (1840), which depicted a utopia in which an elected government controlled all economic activity and supervised social affairs, the family remaining the only other independent unit. Icaria is the name of the fictional country and ideal society he describes. The success of this book prompted him to take steps to realize his Utopia. Condition: In a quarter-straight-grained-morocco binding. Externally sound, though with marks to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Ink annotations to front pastedown. Pages are bright, though with spotting and some ink spills throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Leipzig - Berlag von Mayer and Wigand, 1842. Leipzig - Berlag von Mayer and Wigand, 1842 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A handsomely reboundscarce first edition of Musus' collection of German fairy stories illustrated with numerouswoodcuts from drawings by R. Jordan, G. Osterwald, L. Richter and A. Schrodter. First edition thus. Volksmhrchen der Deutschen Johann Karl August Musus (1735- 1787) was a German author from Jena. He studied theology at the university of Jena, and would have become the pastor of a parish but for the resistance of some peasants, who objected that he had been known to dance. In 1782 - 86 he published his best work, Volksmrchen der Deutschen, a collection of German fairy tales. Even in this series of tales, the substance of which Musus collected among the people, he could not refrain from satire. The stories, therefore, lack the simplicity of genuine folk-lore. Condition: Handsomely rebound in a quarter calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, in excellent condition withonly very slight wear to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with slight scattered foxing and slight marginal tidemarks to some pages. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Autograph letter signed to Nathaniel Bowditch

New Haven 1842 - Silliman, Benjamin (1779-1864). Autograph letter signed to Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838). 2pp. plus integral address leaf. New Haven, Sept. 5, 1842. 252 x 196 mm. Lightly creased, small portion of address leaf torn away where seal was broken, light soiling along folds but very good. Docketed. From chemist and geologist Benjamin Silliman, one of the first American professors of science (at Yale University), founding faculty member of the Yale Medical School and the first to distill petroleum; to mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch, author of The New American Practical Navigator (1802 and subsequent editions to the present), often described as the founder of modern maritime navigation. In the letter Silliman inquires after the health of the wife of his friend Charles Thomas Jackson (1805-80), the Boston chemist and geologist best known for his role in the development of surgical anesthesia (1846). Silliman's letter reads in part:"You are doubtless acquainted with the fact that your neighbor Mrs. Jackson was taken some months since with delirium--which her husband led us to hope was only symptomatic of a fever . . . As we are a long time without information-as Dr. Jackson is probably on his geological survey in New Hampshire & as we have been informed that the ladies of the family are or have been in attendance on Mrs. Jackson in Charlestown I take the liberty to enquire of you whether this interesting friend is restored to her right reason and also in other aspects recovered . . ."Jackson had been appointed state geologist for New Hampshire in 1840 and at the time Silliman wrote this letter was engaged in a geological survey of that state. Jackson's wife, nee Susan Bridge, was a native of Charlestown, a neighborhood in Boston. Wolfe & Patterson, Charles Thomas Jackson: "The Head behind the Hands" (2007), p. 73.
