        Péhriska-Rúhpa. A Minatarre or big-bellied Indian

      Paris, Coblenz and London 1842 - A very rare proof before letters. There are two distinct states of this image: one with three small figures in the mid-ground to the right of the main figure, and a second where these figures have been removed A powerful portrait of Péhriska-Rúhpa ('Two Ravens') presents the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa as a figure of great dignity. He adopts an attitude that would have been familiar to all men of power and rank, his worth displayed symbolically in his clothing and adornment. His shirt is trimmed with bands of bright yellow quillwork, elaborately fringed with ermine, locks of human hair and dyed horsehair. He wears a striped woolen breechclout and quilled leggings of deer skin. Around his neck is a necklace of bear claws, fastened to an otter-skin band and spaced with blue and white beads. Symbols of great wealth, these necklaces were made from the foreclaws of grizzly bears, preferably from animals taken in the spring when the claws were large comparatively unworn and showing white tips. A decorated buffalo robe over one shoulder and arm, Péhriska-Rúhpa holds his decorated pipe in the crook of his other arm. This is one of Bodmer's masterpieces of portraiture, and was carried out during the travellers' winter stop-over at Fort Clark in 1833-1834 Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures.         The Chess Player's Chronicle

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in period cloth with blind stamped covers with gilt insignia, and gilt decoration and lettering to spine. Volume III. (Betts: 7-1) First edition. The Chess Player's Chronicle, founded by Howard Staunton and extant from 1841–56 and 1859–62, was the world's first successful English-language magazine devoted exclusively to chess. Various unrelated but identically or similarly named publications were published until 1902. The earliest chess magazine in any language was the French Le Palamède, published in 1836-39 and 1842-47. In 1837 George Walker introduced an English-language magazine, the Philidorian, that was devoted to "chess and other scientific games". Only six issues of it were published, and it "expired in May, 1838". The Chess Player's Chronicle became the first successful English-language chess magazine. In 1840 or 1841 Staunton bought the fortnightly magazine The British Miscellany and Chess Player's Chronicle. In 1841 it became The Chess Player's Chronicle. In 1843, the Chess Player's Chronicle became a shilling monthly magazine. Staunton "made the inclusion of a large number of games by himself and other leading players of the day a special feature" of the magazine. He also used the magazine as a forum for attacking others. Staunton was the owner and editor of the magazine until the early 1850s, when he sold it to R.B. O'Brien. O'Brien became editor of the magazine, but was unable to continue its success and discontinued it in 1856 because of financial losses and his own illness. It reappeared in 1859 under the editorship of Ignatz Kolisch, Zytogorski, and Josef Kling, but survived only until July 1862. Thereafter, a number of magazines appeared with the same or similar name (such as Chess Players' Chronicle) appeared. Arthur Skipworth, assisted by William Wayte and Charles Ranken, wrote The Chess Players' Quarterly Chronicle, which was published in York from February 1868 to December 1871. Skipworth, who had left Bilsdale for Tetford Rectory, Horncastle, and John Wisker became the editors of the new The Chess Players' Chronicle in February 1872. Johann Löwenthal began writing for it in 1873. The magazine ran until 1875. In January 1876, it was succeeded by The Chess Player's Chronicle, whose editor-in-chief was J. Jenkin of Helensburgh. Its editorial staff consisted of Jenkin, Skipworth, Ranken, Wayte, and Andrew Hunter of Glasgow. Billed as a "monthly record of provincial chess", it was published at Glasgow, costing sixpence. Its short run under Jenkin's editorship was marked by xenophobia. The February issue stated that the West End Club had "cleared away the disturbing foreign element which infected the Divan" and referring to Wilhelm Steinitz as "the hot-headed little Austrian". Its third and last issue was published in March. The magazine reappeared in January 1877. It was now under Ranken's editorship, assisted by J. Crum, G. B. Fraser, Skipworth, and Wayte. The first issue apologized for "certain offensive statements and insinuations, seriously affecting the honor of some eminent players", and explained that some members of the present editorial staff had only contributed games and other inoffensive material to it in 1875. Ranken continued to edit the magazine until September 1880. In 1881, the title was enlarged to The Chess Player's Chronicle, and Journal of Indoor and Outdoor Sports, and "the magazine's importance in the chess world was no longer the same". None of these magazines compared in quality with what Staunton had achieved, and the success of the British Chess Magazine, by the turn of the century a superb magazine, put an end to the title in 1902.       James Bohn, London 1842 - Expertly bound to style in half purple morocco over original purple cloth covered boards, flat spine in six compartments, lettered in the second and third, the others with a repeat overall decoration in gilt A fine copy of Lambert's masterpiece: the ultimate edition, including spectacular plates after Ferdinand Bauer. Only a few copies of this edition, published by James Bohn, appear to have been printed and no other copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty-five years. It was the first edition to gather all the plates into a single large-format volume (with a separate octavo text volume not present here) thus eliminating any possibility of problems with the text offsetting onto the image area. The majority of the plates are after Ferdinand Bauer, who with his brother Franz "may well claim to be the greatest of all botanical draughtsmen. Their skill in execution of detail is miraculous, yet they never lost sight of the wood for the trees; everything is understood, balanced, controlled . The splendid illustrations to [the present work] . deeply impressed Goethe . The botanical draughtsman was no longer the mere recorder of floral beauty; he now had the more difficult task of serving both Art and Science" (Great Flower Books, p.37). The earliest edition of this work, with the fewest number of plates, was published in two volumes between 1803 and 1824. It then appeared in various formats with varying numbers of plates until the Bohn issue of 1842. According to Henrey the largest number of plates found is 103 in a 3-volume folio edition published by George White between 1837 and 1842 (although Nissen gives a plate total of 117 for the same edition). The present example has one more plate than the Lindley Library copy described by Henrey. Lambert's work is of primary importance as a record of the genus Pinus, and is often cited in subsequent works. However as Renkema and Ardagh point out, the somewhat haphazard way in which the work was published means that these citations are often contradictory and to gain a full understanding of the information given by Lambert it is essential to have access to not just one but all of the main editions, culminating with the present work.         Winter Village of the Minatarres

      London, Paris, Coblenz 1842 - Karl Bodmer Winter Village of the Minatarres from Travels in the Interior of North America London, Paris, Coblenz: 1836-42 Hand-colored aquatint engraving Paper size approximately 17 1/2” x 22 1/2” 26” x 28 1/2” framed Karl Bodmer was a little-known Swiss painter when he was chosen by Prince Maximilian of Prussia to accompany his voyage to America, in order to document in pictorial terms the expedition. With the rest of Maximilian’s company, the two traveled among the Plains Indians from 1832 to 1834, a time when the Plains and the Rockies were still virtually unknown. They arrived in the West before acculturation had begun to change the lives of the Indians, and Bodmer, who was a protegé of the great naturalist von Humbolt, brought a trained ethnologist’s eye to the task. The Bodmer/Maximilian collaboration produced a record of their expedition that is incontestably the finest early graphic study of the Plains tribes. Maximilian and Bodmer journeyed from St. Louis up the Missouri River on the American Fur Company steamboat “Yellowstone,” stopping at a series of forts built by the Fur Company and meeting their first Indians at Bellevue. The travelers continued on another steamboat, “Assiniboin,” to Fort Union, where they met the Crees and Assiniboins. The expedition spent its first winter at Fort Clark, where the Mandans in particular excited Bodmer’s attention, although he was also to draw the Minatarri and Crow peoples. The explorers continued by keelboat to Fort Mackenzie, which proved to be the westernmost point of their journey. After living among and studying the Blackfeet for several weeks, Maximilian decided that it was too dangerous to continue, so the travelers returned southward, reaching St. Louis in May 1834. After the conclusion of the journey, Bodmer spent four years in Paris supervising the production of the aquatints made from his drawings. These prints rank with the finest Western art in any medium, and they are the most complete record of the Plains Indians before the epidemics of the mid-19th century had decimated their numbers, and before the white man’s expansion had taken their lands. In contrast to other artist-explorers of the 19th century, such as George Catlin, Bodmer was well-trained in the classic European tradition. The work that he did in America is considered to be the high point of a distinguished career. Perhaps more significant, the plates made from Bodmer's sketches were the first truly accurate images of the Plains Indians to reach the general public. Because the 1837 smallpox epidemic killed more than half the Blackfeet and almost all the Mandans, Bodmer’s visually striking work, together with prince Maximilian’s detailed studies of these tribes, form the primary accounts of what became virtually lost cultures. These spectacular and atmospheric images are important and beautiful records of the landscape of the American West as it appeared when Bodmer saw it, just before westward expansion took hold and began the indelible transformation of the frontier.

      - Heywood Hardy (1842-1923) “A Welcomed Refreshment” Signed lower left: “Haywood Hardy” Oil on canvas 26.5" x 17.25" 32.5" x 23.5" Framed Haywood Hardy (1801-1878) was a distinguished painter of equestrian and hunting scenes, as well as a talented portraitist. Hardy was born in Chichester, England, into a family of artists. His father, James Hardy, Sr., was a respected landscape painter, and his older brother, James Hardy, Jr., was a painter of horses and dogs, often in English and Scottish Highland hunting scenes. Hardy left home at the age of 17 and began painting animals in Keynsham, though he did not initially find success. Later, Hardy went to Paris where he studied under the battle painter Pielse at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1870, after a brief stint in Antwerp, Hardy moved to St. John’s Wood, London, a neighborhood overflowing with artists, and shared a studio with the painter Briton Riviere (1840-1920). His career began to flourish, as Hardy was commissioned to paint portraits at well known estates as well as sporting scenes and animal studies. It was at this time that Hardy began to focus on genre subjects as well. Additionally, he worked as an illustrator, contributing to The Illustrated London News, and The Graphic Magazine, as well as began producing etchings of his works. Heywood Hardy was honored with memberships to a number of societies including the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He also became an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. This work is a fine example of Heywood Hardy’s remarkable skill at genre paintings.       Thomas Agnew & Messrs. Ackermann, Manchester & London 1842 - A grand group portrait of a aristocratic coursing party near Liverpool The event was known as the Waterloo Cup Coursing Meeting, and it took place on the Sefton Estate at Altcar near Liverpool. Depicted among the participants are the Earl and Countess of Sefton, Lord Douglas and Lord Eglinton. A reviewer commented on the fine drawing of the greyhounds, and in fact the whole ensemble of sportsmen and women, horses and dogs are beautifully rendered by Ansdell. Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) was a native of Liverpool. He established himself as one of the best painters of country life and sport and soon had a national reputation. This led him to move to London in 1847 where he enjoyed continued success adding portraiture to his repertoire. Samuel William Reynolds, Jr. (1794-1872) was the son of and successor to S. W. Reynolds. They were both engravers of the highest order. Engraved on heavy wove paper, sheet: 24 3/4 x 43 1/4 inches with publisher's blind stamp.

        Tower-Rock view on the Mississippi

      Paris, Coblentz and London, 1842. Bodmer and Prince Maximilian set out for St.Louis from Mount Vernon on 18 March 1833 making their way rapidly down the River Ohio and joining the Mississippi on 20 March. On the afternoon of 21 March 1833 their steamer approached a feature known as the Grand Tower (or Tower-Rock), which Maximilian described as an isolated drumlike formation between sixty and eighty feet high. He added that `Mr.Bodmer sketched the Grand Tower and found this place highly interesting and picturesque'. The scene includes the traveller's Ohio paddle-steamer and three Mississippi keel-boats, a form of freight transportation that by the 1830s was fast being replaced by the steamers. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. They arrived in Boston in July 1832, traveled on to Philadelphia, where they stayed with Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother Joseph. From here they headed west across Pennsylvania across the Alleghenies to Pittsburgh and the Ohio country, visiting all the important German settlements en route. Their most important stop on their route west was at the utopian colony of New Harmony in Indiana. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the countries leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. On 24 March 1833 the party reached St. Louis, Missouri, and the start of the journey into Indian country. Graff 4648; Howes M443a; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1. Unlike many sporting writers throughout the 19th Century, he genuinely was a splendid rider, a good judge of horse-flesh and hounds, and indeed a good all-round sportsman who was also a wit and something of a scholar [DNB]. Among the rarest books of North American views, including views of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, the Great Lakes region, and parts of Canada. "Born in London from an early age Castelnau took an interest in science and adventure, having read the accounts of Captain Cook and others, and having studied natural history under Cuvier and Saint-Hilaire. Between 1837 and 1841 he travelled through the United States and Upper and Lower Canada, studying their institutions and meeting many prominent people" - Howgego. The text contains a description of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Lower Canada, based upon the authors travels. In his description of each region, Castelnau describes the agriculture, education, customs, etc., dividing each section to separately discuss "des blances, des noirs, and des indiens." Castelnau traveled in areas that were comparatively remote and had not been extensively pictured previously. From Florida he included views of Tallahassee, Key West, and the Everglades, while the scenes of Augusta and Columbus, Georgia are among the earliest of those infant cities. From the Great Lakes region he provided several scenes of Michilimackinac Island; an early view of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; two pictures of Quebec; and the "Entrée de la Rivière de Chicago, Illinois, thus being referred to as the "first book to contain a view of Chicago" (Howes).       Sydney: James Tegg, George Street, 1842. Octavo, 20 pp.; a very good copy in plain brown wrappers. Governor Gipps Under Fire. Scarce attack on Gipps: the final ten pages comprise a protest regarding the New South Wales Legislative Council signed by both John Jamison and John Blaxland. Having unsuccessfully sought English aid in cancelling immigration orders after the expensive rush of bounty immigrants, and after being severely censured for issuing orders in excess of land revenue, Gipps submitted a plan to the Local Legislature 'for raising by Debentures the sum of £200,000, to be secured on, and paid out of the Ordinary Revenue of the Colony, if not satisfied within three years, out of the Land Fund, and bearing interest not exceeding the rate of six per cent. per annum, payable out of the Ordinary Revenue of the Colony…'. This pamphlet sets out the objections to the plan, which was not accepted. Gipps was then forced to draw on the military chest, and when that was exhausted, withdrew government deposits from the banks to meet the deficits already incurred for bounty payments. When all these measures proved inadequate, he finally borrowed £50,000 in debentures, "a daring innovation" (ADB).

A COMPREHENSIVE WORLD ATLAS WITH TWO MAPS SHOWING THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS. First edition. The maps of the United States and Mexico both show the Republic of Texas, which existed as a sovereign state from 1836 to 1846. The Republic was forged in the aftermath of armed revolt against Mexico, which included the famous battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. The young republic's claimed borders included present-day Texas, along with portions of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. The new government was similar to that of the United States, with a House, Senate, Presidency, and Supreme Court. The United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the annexation of Texas on February 28, 1845. U.S. President John Tyler signed the bill on March 1, which set the date for annexation as December 29 of that year. On October 13, Texas voters approved the annexation offer and state constitution, which contained an endorsement of the slave trade. The U.S. Congress subsequently accepted the constitution and made Texas a U.S. state on the same day the annexation took effect. A key motivation for accepting annexation was the huge debts the government of Texas had incurred. In 185, the federal government agreed to assume the debt in return for cession of all Texas-claimed territory in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Philips Atlases 782.       1842. <p>Herschel, John F. W. (1792-1871). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent [Samuel Hunter Christie (1784-1865)]. Collingwood [House, Hawkhurst], December 21, 1842. 3pp. 122 x 98 mm. Very good.</p><p>Excellent letter discussing photographic researches from Sir John Herschel, whose intensive investigations in photography and photochemistry during the late 1830s and early 1840s led to enormous advances in the field in its earliest days. Herschel coined the terms "positive" and "negative," invented new photographic processes and improved existing ones, and experimented with color reproduction.</p><p>Herschel&#39;s letter begins with a discussion of his latest photographic work:</p><p>"Having had 2 days fine sun I have prepared specimens of photographs illustrative of the last paragraphs of my paper about the mercurial preparations and of a process not yet described that results of which if they will keep appear to me of great beauty. May I request you to direct them to be placed on the library table or otherwise submitted for inspection of such members as they may interest on Thursday and then added to the collection of my other specimens in Mr. Robertson&#39;s hands with a request that he will keep them together."</p><p>Herschel refers here to one of the two important papers on photography that he submitted to the Royal Society in 1842: "On the action of the rays of the solar spectrum on vegetable colours, and on some new photographic processes" (Philosophical Transactions 132 [1842]: 181-214) and "On certain improvements on photographic processes described in a former communication, and on the parathermic rays of the solar spectrum" (Philosophical Transactions 133 [1843]: 1-6). These papers discussed Herschel&#39;s photochemical experiments with a wide range of organic and metallic materials, and announced his invention of two new photographic processes: the gold-based chrysotype and the cyanotype, an iron-based method using potassium ferricyanide. This last process, which produces white images on a blue ground directly onto paper, is the ancestor of the modern blueprint. Herschel described the working details of these processes fully in his second paper, to which he is likely referring in the present letter. The "process not yet described" probably refers to Herschel&#39;s experimental and ultimately unsuccessful mercury-based photographic process, which he christened "celanotype." Herschel&#39;s correspondent was mathematician and physicist Samuel Hunter Christie, who made important contributions to the study of magnetism; he served as secretary of the Royal Society from 1837 to 1843. With a sketch of the opening 5 bars of the violin part to the Scherzo at the conclusion of the second movement. Headed in another hand: "Manuscript von Louis Spohr. Bruchstück aus dem dritten Trio für Piano, Violine und Cello componiert 1842." Somewhat browned, a bit heavier to edges and folds; creased and very slightly abriaded along folds; several small edge tears and very small holes, just touching notation.. Göthel locates autograph manuscripts of sections of this work in Kassel and Braunschweig. The first edition was published in 1843 by Schuberth. Spohr, a friend and contemporary of Beethoven and Weber, was a successful composer, conductor and violinist. He held various notable posts, including that of Kapellmeister in Kassel. His works were performed extensively throughout Europe and he was second only to Mendelssohn in popularity in England. His method for violin is still highly regarded and his chamber music remains very miuch a part of the standard repertoire. Spohr was "regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers... Mozart's Figaro and Wagner's Tristan were both composed during [his] lifetime; his own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism..." In 1836 Spohr married Carl Pfeiffer's 28-year-old sister Marianne, a gifted amateur pianist who stimulated him to compose a series of chamber works with piano, for which he had written little up to that time; these included the three duos concertants for violin and piano (1836-7), the five piano trios (1841-9), the Piano Quintet (1845) and the Septet (1853)." Duodecimo, pp. 48. Original printed wrappers. Housed in a black quarter morocco slipcase by the Chelsea Bindery. Wrappers very slightly soiled, single wormhole through most of the work yet only occasionally touching a letter, a little very light foxing, an excellent copy of this very rare work in unrestored original condition. First edition of the parodic poem that includes Engels&#39;s first published portrait of his future collaborator, Karl Marx. Extremely rare: no copy at auction, including German, since 1955; OCLC locates only four copies in libraries worldwide, all in Germany and Switzerland; no copy in the British Library, no copy in North America. In spring 1839 Engels had read David Strauss&#39;s Das Leben Jesu, and by winter 1840 had acquainted himself with Hegel&#39;s Philosophy of History. In 1841 he was (like Karl Marx) a member of the Young Hegelian club known as Die Freien. Although he had not yet formed a friendship with Marx, they were both formulating their own positions by breaking with the prevailing influence of Bruno Bauer. Writing here in collaboration with Bauer&#39;s younger brother Edgar, Engels achieves in this comic poem complex levels of satire and parody, both literary and philosophical. Engels&#39;s ironic use of parody, similar in form to Marx&#39;s use of Hegel as both the voice and the target of his satiric epigrams of 1837, was a popular mode among Young Hegelians at this time. As parody, it is itself an imitation of the parodistic style used by Bauer in 1841 to defend the radical Hegel in Die Posaune des jüngsten Gerichts über Hegel, den Atheisten und Antichristen. Similarly David Strauss, in an earlier attack on Bauer, had used this form of ironic identification with the object of his criticism. The short title of Engels&#39;s satire, Triumph des Glaubens, is reminiscent of a farce written in 1817 by the Graf von Platen, entitled Sieg der Gläubigen (Victory of the Believers), which had satirised orthodox theology and revelation. Engels also employs Goethe&#39;s Faust to ambiguous effect, transforming the battle for Faust&#39;s soul between God and the devil into a battle between pietists and Left Hegelians for the soul of the philosopher Bauer. Engels devotes eight lines of his poem to a caricature of Marx, describing him as "a swarthy chap from Trier", and emphasizing his furious energy. Shortly after this publication Engels escaped the inward-looking Young Hegelian circle by leaving Germany to work in his father&#39;s Manchester textile firm. However he and Marx would later reutilise this satiric use of parody in their first joint work, Die heilige Familie (The Holy Family), 1845.

A total of 95 maps and plates: 83 superb coloured and tinted plates, without the group of phrenological plates listed by Nissen, but including 4 coloured geological sections uncalled for; part-coloured folding map of the entire region, and a larger, highly-detailed folding map of the Crimea with route inked in in red, 2 folding geological maps, one of them coloured, and 8 uncoloured maps relating to the carboniferous rocks around Donetsk. Ex-Royal Society of Scotland library with their device gilt to the spine only, a little rubbed and scuffed, some foxing and browning, and occasional marginal soiling near the large folding maps, a couple of plates with short, neatly repaired splits, but on the whole a clean and sound copy. First edition of this highly uncommon natural history atlas. The make-up of this plate volume seems to vary from copy to copy: the present copy contains 79 of the plates called for by Nissen, including the superb ichthyological and amphibian suites, together with a group of geological plates and maps including four coloured plates of sections, and ten maps, two of them folding and coloured; and also includes the large folding map of the Crimea often found to be lacking from the topographical volume. Anatolii Demidov (1812-1870) or, as his name was westernized, Anatole de Demidoff, was the son of Paul Grigoryevich Demidov (1738-1821), a distinguished traveller and benefactor of Russian scientific education. This scientific expedition through southern Russia and the Crimea was sponsored by Anatolii to the tune of half a million francs. He gathered a team of experts under the leadership of Frédéric Le Play, including Raffet as official artist, and the critic Jean Janin to compile the official account, published in four volumes 1840-2. Demidov had hoped that this publication would put him back in favour with the tsar, who was unhappy with his decision to settle in France. However, the almost entirely French composition of the expedition team inevitably militated against this outcome.
