      Arrowsmith,, London: 1842 - Map published London 15th Feb. 1842. Lithographed map on thick paper, linen backed, original dissected folds, fine outline color, 26 1/4 x 21 3/4". In an olive cloth covered slip case, 5 1/4 x 8 3/4" folded, with Arrowsmith labels on the front panel and spine, with the previous owner's name on front label. Slipcase slt rubbed at edges and spine; spine label worn but still legible. The map has a Julius L. Brenchley, M.A. bookplate. Brenchley was a gentleman explorer especially active in the South Seas. Map published for the Van Diemens Land Company, with a table at the top listing grants of land to the company, with a total of 350,000 acres. The nine counties are highlighted in yellow, blue or red, and include: Launceston, Norfolk Plains, Campbell Town, Clyde, Oatlands, Oyster Bay, New Norfolk, Richmond, and Hobart Town. The west coast is unexplored. There is an engraved number 37 at the top of the map to the right, inside the sharp impression mark. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      [Paris, Coblenz and London 1842 - A highly evocative view of the confluence of the Fox and Wabash Rivers: the almost pre-Columbian scene is shown at sunset, the final red light of the sun adding an ochre wash to the entire scene. Cattle drink from their watering-place on the opposite bank, a flock of Carolina Parrakeets settles down noisily at the roost for the night, beneath a Bald Eagle perches watchfully: all this is allied with the untamed nature of the landscape and gives us a view of America as it was before the arrival of the white man. Prince Maximilian's health had suffered on the journey out to New Harmony, and during November and December 1832, whilst he recovered, Bodmer and Dreidoppel made many excursions along the rivers in search of zoological specimens. On 6 December 1832 Maximilian was sufficiently recovered to accompany them and as he recorded in his journal `Mr. Bodmer made a drawing from an interesting landscape, the estuary of the Fox River into the Wabash', he goes on, the water was `clear and dark green' and the surrounding forest of `colossal Plantanus trees were shining white in the densely tangled thicket'. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. They arrived in Boston in July 1832, traveled on to Philadelphia, where they stayed with Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother Joseph. From here they headed west across Pennsylvania across the Alleghenies to Pittsburgh and the Ohio country, visiting all the important German settlements en route. Their most important stop on their route west was at the utopian colony of New Harmony in Indiana. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the country's leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. Sehr frischer und dynamischer, im Kolorit geradezu modern anmutender Landschaftsausschnitt, der die Orientierung an progressiven Stilmerkmalen der Zeit verrät.. Die Landschafts- und Architekturmalerin, Lithographin und Holzschneiderin verbrachte ihre Jugend in Petersburg. Sie war Schülerin von P. Graeb (1842-1892) in Berlin. Obwohl ihr bereits 1881 anläßlich einer Ausstellung des Vereins der Künstlerinnen in Berlin ein Preis verliehen wurde, studierte sie wohl erst danach in Dresden bei P. Baum (1859-1932). Anschließend blieb sie in Berlin ansässig. Studienreisen unternahm sie an die Nord- und Ostsee, nach Holland, Österreich, in die Schweiz, Dänemark und nach Oberitalien. Weitere Ausstellungsteilnahmen folgten in Berlin, Hannover, Hamburg und Bremen. Die Staatliche Gemäldesammlung in Kassel besitzt einige Werke der Künstlerin.

Neues Stück von Mons. Nestroy heute Freitag zum 2ten Mahl mit immensem Beifall wiederhohlt. | Also bis Darmstadt seid Ihr gekommen? nit übel! Die Tage von dem Einem, der Kompagnion vom andern; die Frau vom gar Anderen bestürmen mich mit Fragen und Briefen um Auskunft über die Westpolexpedition [.]". Erwähnt Goethe, Eduard Duller und Felsing und beschwert sich darüber, daß er keine Briefe erhalten habe. Sodann zwei Notenzeilen auf den Text "Drei Geister lassen mir keine Ruh sie trinken mein eigenes Blut mir zu" aus dem "Lied eines Wahnsinnigen" von Joseph Christian von Zedlitz. "[.] Verkaufts den Wagen; die Rollen auf die Fußparthie sind leicht; nur der Zwirn! Der Zwirn! Ja, und was ists denn mit die Kaffeetassen? [.] Ich grüße Dich herzlich! wir und das ganze Publikum denken oft an Dich; bey der letzten Oper: Die Königin von Einem Tag hat man Dich schwer vermißt [.]". - Sebastian Binder war Chorsänger am Theater an der Wien und am Theater am Kärntnertor, bevor am Prager Operntheater seine Laufbahn als Solotenor begann. Seine glänzende Karriere führte ihn u. a. an die Hoftheater in Dresden und München; seit 1840 sang er an der Wiener Hofoper. - Etwas angestaubt, gebräunt und knittrig sowie mit kleinen Randläsuren.

      London. 1842-9 - Size: 605 x 425 mm. Very good condition. Unobtrusive blind stamp. Original tinted lithograph. Additional hand colouring. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas.         Mató-Tópe. Adorned with the insignia of his warlike deeds

      [Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. A very rare experimental proof, with three colours used to ink different areas of a single printing plate. The same printing method was used by Redouté to such spectacular effect on his botanical prints Mató-Tópe (`Four Bears') was the second chief of the Mandans, and a popular leader amongst his people, respected for his prowess in battle. This carefully-worked portrait was carried out by Bodmer during the travellers' winter stop-over at Fort Clark in 1833-1834, Mató-Tópe was keen on having his portrait painted and also on painting and, as a frequent visitor, he closely observed both Bodmer and Prince Maximilian at work. Here Mató-Tópe presents a living record of his bravery in battle. In his hair he wears a wooden knife to represent the weapon he wrestled from a Cheyenne, the six coloured wooden sticks represent gunshot wounds he has received, the split turkey feather stands for an arrow injury and the others feathers probably represent other coup. His membership of the prestigious Dog Society is signaled by the cluster of painted owl plumage at the back of his head, the barred stripes on his arm represent more coup and the hand on his chest indicates that he has taken prisoners. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. A complete set of the seventh edition, the first edition of the encyclopedia to incorporate an index, all in an attractive contemporary binding.       London John Snow, Paternoster-Row 1842 - First edition, seventh thousand. Profusely illustrated throughout with full and partial-page engravings by G. Baxter, including a very finely executed hand-coloured frontispiece and a large folding map of South Africa. 8vo, bound in contemporary beautifully decorated maroon morocco with elaborate arabesque styled gilt and blind decorations on the covers; the spine with dense gilt paneled designs within compartments between raised bands. xvi, 624,12 ads, pp. A clean and handsome copy, very well preserved with only very minor age evidence. AN UNUSUALLY HANDSOME AND ELABORATELY BOUND COPY OF THIS CLASSIC WORK. The preliminary chapters deal with the opinions of the author on the origin of the Hottentots, and give a synopsis of the early work of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, reference being made to the labours of Drs. Vanderkemp and Philip, and other pioneer missionaries who preceded Mr. Moffat. The volume gives a valuable account of mission work among the Bechuanas, with notes on the customs of the natives, and a description of the earlier travels of the author and some information is afforded respecting the reformed savage Namaqua chief "Afrikaner". The appearance in Cape Town of this convert was the cause of much wonder and astonishment, his arrival having been awaited with considerable skepticism by Lord Charles Somerset, who was much struck with this example of the results of missionary enterprise, and who "expressed his pleasure at seeing thus before him one who had been the scourge of the country and the terror of the border colonists." An interesting account of Moselekatse and his people is given, and it is remarked that this well-known potentate "seemed anxious to please and to exhibit himself and his people to the best advantage." There was, however, considerable difficulty m ascertaining the chief's real character, as no one in his dominions "dared breathe a syllable that was not calculated to set him forth as the best and noblest of beings, immaculate in his actions, the very perfection of all that was lovely just, and good.'' He was very gracious to the missionaries, and appreciated their previous kindness to his envoys, and Moffat gained considerable influence over him, and was instrumental in obtaining his permission to allow a mission station to be established in his country. There are some particulars concerning Dr. Andrew Smith's expedition into the interior in I835, and there is an ample account of the labors of the various missionary societies engaged amongst the Bechuanas, Matabeles, Basutos, and other races at this period. Pratt ca. 1890 in full red levant morocco, covers with triple gilt-rule borders and corner thistles. Spines with five raised band, decoratively tooled with a thistle design in compartments and lettered in gilt, gilt board edges, and decorative turn-ins, tope, edge gilt, decorative endpapers. Several volumes with joints expertly repaired but still an outstanding and very imposing set of this, the best edition of Sir Walter Scott. Bookplate of The Philip H. and A.S.W. Rosenbach Foundation Museum on each front paste-down.The engravings are highly interesting and quite remarkable. This is by far the finest and most interesting set of Sir Walter Scott that we have ever seen. "The Proprietors of the Waverley Novels have had the great satisfaction in the results of their efforts to bring those Works in convenient form within the reach of the less opulent classes of the community.… the Proprietors were also taking measures for an edition of a different character. The brothers owned the Rosenbach Company which became the preeminent dealer of rare books, manuscripts and decorative arts during the first half of the 20th century. Dr. Rosenbach in particular was seminal in the rare book world, helping to build libraries such as the Widener Library at Harvard, The Huntington Library and the Folger Shakespeare Library.

The dinner was held in Papanti's Hall, with Josiah Quincy Jr as Chair, who was ably assisted by Oliver Wendell Holmes & Nathan Hale Jr; the young James T. Fields was a guest. Also in attendance was "Josiah Quincy Sr, the president of Harvard, Washington Allston, the poet & artist; George Bancroft, the Historian, & Richard Henry Dana Jr. ... Letters were read from Prescott, Washington Irving, William Ellery Channing, Judge Story, and others, regretting their inability to be there." & & In his remarks, Dickens introduced the subject of International Copyright, a topic dear to his heart, if not those in attendance. This was one of the first salvos in a battle that was to rage for decades, and the local papers were not slow to respond, saying Dickens' remarks were in bad taste for a social gathering & charged him with creating a "huge dissonance". & & Evidently the [future prominent] Boston publisher Mr Fields thought Nevermind with respect to the copyright issue, for he is known to have written shortly thereafter, "Was there ever such a night before in our staid city?" and he would later become a staunch friend to, and publisher of, the 'Inimitable'. [cf. Johnson. DICKENS, pp. 374-376]. & & After the dinner, Dickens wrote Forster, "It was a most superb affair and the speaking admirable." Per Fielding, Dickens "left Boston on 5 February, with happier memories of his visit there than of anywhere else in America when four months later he returned to England." [Fielding. Overall toning and light scattered foxing to the title and last leaf, scattered soiling and light chipping to the edges, good or better. The engraved music is clean and bright. The Fantasy in F minor, composed in 1841 when Chopin was 31 years old, is considered one of his masterpieces. Chopin scholar James Huneker went so far as to call it "one of the greatest of piano pieces." Film aficionados will recognize it as one of the Five Easy Pieces, played by Jack Nicholson on an out-of-tune piano on the back of a pickup truck in the 1970 movie. Scarce.         Illustrations of Natural History.

      Edinburgh (N.p.) 1842 - 24mo. (11)ff. A handmade textbook of animals from around the world, written and illustrated by George Cressy Hall, H.S.B. The book opens with a hand-lettered title page, and each page has a beautifully rendered pen and ink illustration of an animal with concise, informative text describing the creature below. The text is entirely written by hand, in a fine copperplate script. Included are the roebuck, llama, hyena, zebra, eagle, emu, heron, carp, rattlesnake, and a butterfly. The drawings appear to have been carefully copied from the illustrations in books on natural history of the period; several are nearly identical to those found in The Tower Menagerie, a popular account of the exotic creatures in the royal zoo of the Tower of London, published by Robert Jennings in 1829. The last page bears a small vignette of an old man walking into the sunset, with the word "Finis." A late nineteenth century inscription inside the front cover reads, "This book of Pen and Ink Drawings was done by my first cousin George Cressy Hall, whilst an undergraduate at Edinburgh in 1841.2 -- Edwd. Marshall Hall." The inscription was likely written by the celebrated English barrister Edward Marshall Hall, who was known as "The Great Defender." Little is known about the artist, and this is the only known example of his work. Spine sunned, corners and extremities rubbed, some foxing to endpapers, spot to margin of a few pages, not affecting the illustrations or text, else about fine in half calf over marbled paper boards. Boys, [London 1842 - A very fine image from Boys' 'London As It Is': a work 'of considerable importance' (Abbey) Abbey writes of the work London As It Is from which this beautiful image comes: apart "from the beauty of its plates, it records London at a period when good pictorial records were few. The London of the 1840's is probably more difficult to reconstruct than at any other period in the nineteenth century" (Abbey Life 239). High production costs and changing fashion caused aquatint to die out, photography was still in an experimental stage, and chromolithography did not appear until 1850. Boys' work was issued with the plates tinted and hand-coloured, including Boys' name at the foot, or as here, with the plates hand-coloured mounted in imitation of watercolours, with no imprint. Boys garnered enormous prestige from this work and from his earlier, Picturesque Views in Paris, Ghent. (1839). The "accuracy of his portraits of buildings and his skill in composition have seldom been bettered" (Mallalieu Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists p.38). Cf. Abbey Scenery 239. Dr. von Ammon (1799-1861) was actually an ophthalmologist, but he contributed greatly to the field of plastic surgery, especially in the areas about the lips and eyes. The section on Texas and the Santa Fe expedition is attributed to Franklin Coombs, a veteran of the latter ill-fated debacle, and his account of the expedition and his captivity (which first appeared in NILES WEEKLY REGISTER) is reprinted herein, along with another account (Wagner-Camp 86) of a trip to Santa Fe appearing here for the first time in book form. The map measures 21.5 x 23.5 cm. and shows Texas, Mexico, and the southwest region as far north as the Arkansas River, south to Yucatan, west to the Pacific, and east to New Orleans. The founding work of Taoism, the Tao-te Ching is said to have been written in the 6th century BCE by Lao-Tzu (or Laozi, "Old Master"), a contemporary of Confucius and a central figure of Chinese culture and history. The book was first a philosophy, but it evolved into a religion when it was adopted officially in 440 CE, when Lao-Tzu was venerated as a deity. Lao-Tzu's famously cryptic Tao-te Ching is one of the Five Chinese Classics and one of the most widely read books in history.       London. 1842-9 - Size: 430 × 610 mm. Very good condition. Unobtrusive blind stamp. Original tinted lithograph. Additional hand colouring. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas.
