        The Holy Bible

London - A. Fullerton and Co. 1842 - A beautifully illustrated copy of the Christian Bible. With forty-four engraved plates, including a frontispiece to each volume and a folding frontispiece map to volume I. Also with decorative papers for family registers, left blank. With explanatory notes, practical observations, and copious marginal references by Thomas Scott, and an introductory essay and numerous additional critical, explanatory and practical notes by William Symington. William Symington was a Reformed Presbyterian (Cameronian) minister. Among the Reformed Presbyterians Symington, like his brother, was a commanding influence. A noted evangelical in the covenanting tradition, he was none the less outward-looking and deeply involved in social issues such as slavery, illiteracy, and poor working conditions. Like Thomas Chalmers, whom he in part resembled, he advocated a Scotland cleansed and dedicated. Besides his published sermons, he recorded his views in The Atonement and Intercession of Jesus Christ (1834) and Messiah the Prince (1839; reissued 1881 with memoir). The latter was an important exposition of Cameronian ecclesiological thought. (DNB)Complete in three volumes. Condition: In full morocco bindings. Externally smart, with just some marks to the boards and some shelfwear. Front joints of volumes I,II and III starting; rear joint of volume I also starting. Internally, firmly bound. Fron hinges of volumes I and III strained, but firm. There is some off-setting from the plates. Some foxing to plates, and some scattered spotting to the pages. Overall: VERY GOOD.         Gesangbuch fur die Evangelische Kirche in Wurttemberg

Stuttgart: Verlags-Comptoir des Nueun Gesangbuchs. 1842. First. First edition. Full leather, gilt ruled, inset with glass-bead decorated floral pattern on front and rear board. Later gift inscription in German, modest rubbing and wear at the corners, slight foxing, a very good plus copy. Apparently a songbook prepared for the 25th anniversary of the reign of the King of Wurttemberg, printing the lyrics with title index, index of composers, and brief biographical information. Notable mostly for the very unusual binding of tiny glass beads decorated with floral patterns on a black background, worked in beads of blue, gold, and green, surrounded by a stylized leaf pattern in two shades of green. A few of the tiny beads are missing at the margins, but the decoration is sound and stable, and is otherwise unflawed. An unusual binding, and a lovely book. .

Morning Line for Albany. From the Steamboat Pier, Foot of Barclay-Street. Passage $1 50. The Low-Pressure Steamboat ALBANY, Capt. J.G. Jenkins.

New York: 1842 - A decorative broadside advertising "The ALBANY". The fare is listed at a $1.50 - in 1825, under the Livingston-Fulton monopoly of the Hudson River, it had been $4 or more. The monopoly was dissolved in 1824 following the landmark Gibbons v. Ogden Supreme Court case, opening New York waters to all competitive steam navigation companies. In 1819 there were only nine steamboats in operation on the Hudson River; by 1840, customers could choose from more than 100 in service. This Steamboat and Captain were advertised in the press of the 1840s as paired with Captain Gorham of the "Troy". Captain Jenkins had a long career, working on the Philadelphia route in the 1820s and there followed a long career on the Hudson. The captain's names seem to be invoked as a reassurance for the traveling public, as there were often fires on the steamboats. The worst disaster was to arrive 10 years later in 1852, when the "Henry Clay" burned south of Yonkers, killing many notables, including Andrew Jackson Downing, the architect & landscape designer. 9 5/8 x 10 1/2", a sml. chip in the top affecting the "i" in 'Morning", trimmed a little close on the right side with slt. loss, a little marked but remarkably good. Handwritten in pen at bottom "Monday April 11th" [1842]; with a starboard view of sidewheel steamer ALBANY.A handsome piece.

Smith and Robins, London 1842 - xxiv, 250 p.: 1 leaf of engraved portrait of Horace Walpole, in-text illustrations; 29 cm. Later 19th-century brown cloth spine with original boards. Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins, the auctioneer, advertised the sale to begin on April 25, 1842, and continue for 24 days. However, the original plan to sell some of the prints, drawings, and illustrated books in large lots was altered, so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn, recatalogued in smaller lots, and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24, omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160, omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts (originally lots 161- 187). It does not include the "Names of purchasers and the prices" sometimes found on 58 pages at the end. Inscription on p. xxi dated Jan. 7 1855 by John Robinson, who relates taking nuts from the chestnut trees at Strawberry Hill (said to have been planted by Horace Walpole) at the time of the sale and planting the resulting trees in Kinnington Park. Part of the last line of the inscription was lost when the pages were trimmed during the later 19th-century rebinding. Robinson's name is also written on the front board. He is identified by Sotheran as Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913). with documents from the 2002 sale of the catalog by Henry Sotheran, London. Gift inscription on front free endpaper from Guy Lacy Schless to Nancy Schless, 2002.
