Morning Line for Albany. From the Steamboat Pier, Foot of Barclay-Street. Passage $1 50. The Low-Pressure Steamboat ALBANY, Capt. J.G. Jenkins.

New York: 1842 - A decorative broadside advertising "The ALBANY". The fare is listed at a $1.50 - in 1825, under the Livingston-Fulton monopoly of the Hudson River, it had been $4 or more. The monopoly was dissolved in 1824 following the landmark Gibbons v. Ogden Supreme Court case, opening New York waters to all competitive steam navigation companies. In 1819 there were only nine steamboats in operation on the Hudson River; by 1840, customers could choose from more than 100 in service. This Steamboat and Captain were advertised in the press of the 1840s as paired with Captain Gorham of the "Troy". Captain Jenkins had a long career, working on the Philadelphia route in the 1820s and there followed a long career on the Hudson. The captain's names seem to be invoked as a reassurance for the traveling public, as there were often fires on the steamboats. The worst disaster was to arrive 10 years later in 1852, when the "Henry Clay" burned south of Yonkers, killing many notables, including Andrew Jackson Downing, the architect & landscape designer. 9 5/8 x 10 1/2", a sml. chip in the top affecting the "i" in 'Morning", trimmed a little close on the right side with slt. loss, a little marked but remarkably good. Handwritten in pen at bottom "Monday April 11th" [1842]; with a starboard view of sidewheel steamer ALBANY.A handsome piece.

Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins, the auctioneer, advertised the sale to begin on April 25, 1842, and continue for 24 days. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. Inscription on p. xxi dated Jan. 7 1855 by John Robinson, who relates taking nuts from the chestnut trees at Strawberry Hill (said to have been planted by Horace Walpole) at the time of the sale and planting the resulting trees in Kinnington Park. Part of the last line of the inscription was lost when the pages were trimmed during the later 19th-century rebinding. Robinson's name is also written on the front board. He is identified by Sotheran as Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913). with documents from the 2002 sale of the catalog by Henry Sotheran, London. Gift inscription on front free endpaper from Guy Lacy Schless to Nancy Schless, 2002.         Encampment of the Aulad-Said. February, 18th 1839.

London. 1842-9 - Size: 425 x 605 mm. Very good condition. Unobtrusive blind stamp. Original tinted lithograph. Additional hand colouring. Roberts was the first independent, professional British artist to travel so extensively in the Near East. His tour in 1838-9 produced 272 sketches, a panorama of Cairo and three full sketchbooks, enough material to "serve me for the rest of my life" (Roberts, eastern journal, 28 Jan 1839). Over the next decade he made "a series of intire new drawings" for the large coloured lithographs executed by Louis Haghe for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, which was originally published by subscription, 1842-9. No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East. "Robert's Holy Land was one of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and it was the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph" (Abbey, Travel). These lithographs were originally published in twenty parts, most parts containing six plates, the price for each part with coloured plates (the most expensive state) being 3 guineas. The Holy Land, Syria., from Drawings made on the Spot. London: F.G. Moon. Abbey, Travel, 272; Gay 2216; Ibrahim-Hilmy, II, p.176; Lipperheide 1591; Tooley (1954) 402.

        [Péhriska-Rúhpa. A Minatarre or big-bellied Indian

Paris, Coblenz and London, 1842. A very rare proof before letters. There are two distinct states of this image: one with three small figures in the mid-ground to the right of the main figure, and a second where these figures have been removed A powerful portrait of Péhriska-Rúhpa ('Two Ravens') presents the warrior and chief of the Hidatsa as a figure of great dignity. He adopts an attitude that would have been familiar to all men of power and rank, his worth displayed symbolically in his clothing and adornment. His shirt is trimmed with bands of bright yellow quillwork, elaborately fringed with ermine, locks of human hair and dyed horsehair. He wears a striped woolen breechclout and quilled leggings of deer skin. Around his neck is a necklace of bear claws, fastened to an otter-skin band and spaced with blue and white beads. Symbols of great wealth, these necklaces were made from the foreclaws of grizzly bears, preferably from animals taken in the spring when the claws were large comparatively unworn and showing white tips. A decorated buffalo robe over one shoulder and arm, Péhriska-Rúhpa holds his decorated pipe in the crook of his other arm. This is one of Bodmer's masterpieces of portraiture, and was carried out during the travellers' winter stop-over at Fort Clark in 1833-1834 Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. Graff 4648; Howes M443a; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1. Aquatint engraving by Paul Legrand after Bodmer, proof before all letters, state with three figures in the background. Some light spotting.

Contemporary green half morocco, spine in 6 compartments with gilt lettering. A very fine copy of one of the rarest German books on fungi. The last copy we sold was in 1958. Carl August Friedrich Harzer was a German naturalist and artist at Dresden, initiator and co-founder of the Dresden society 'Iris'. According to Stafleu and Cowan this is the second issue imprint. The excellent plates are drawn and lithographed by the author.Stafleu & Cowan 2454; Nissen 811. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
