Moon, F.G., London 1842 - The Prints of David Roberts:Part 1 - The PrinterLouis Haghe (1806-1885) was one of the msot skillful exponents of the tinted lithograph who became a leading reproductive lithographer in England and on the Continent. Haghe's reputation as a lithographer was primarily based upon topographical views, of which Twyman notes "his most important work of this kind, the translation of Roberts' sketches of the Holy Land, represents the culmination of his art".Part 2 - The Publication of Roberts' Holy Land and EgyptRoberts first sketched in his journals "on the spot" the vaious subjects which, on returning to London, he transcribed into finished paintings and watercolors. These then formed the basis of the lithographs drawn and printed by Louis Haghe. It is interesting to note that in some instances Roberts' original drawings were twice or three times the size of the published print, which indicated the skill of Haghe and his assistants in transferring Roberts' designs onto lithographic stones.Part 3 - A Genesis of Roberts' PrintsDavid Roberts fulfilled a boyhood dream by visiting the East and recording what he saw there; by August 1838 he had resolved to "visit the Holy Land, and make drawings of the scenes of sacred history and the antiquities of Egypt". By this time Roberts had already established himself as a successful topographical artist and published his set of Spanish scenery as tinted lithographs, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, 1837. Eventually he would be elected to the prestigious Royal Academy on the strength of his topographical paintings.Part 4 - The PlatesRoberts' Holy Land and Egypt project has been called "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographic plates" (according to Micheal Twyman). Its production involved over 600 lithographic stones used over an eight to nine year period. It is generally agreed the lithographers Day & Haghe were the most efficient for such large scale work, while Louis Haghe himself was a master lithographer. The plate formats strongly influenced their presentation as prints: large full-page and small half-page vignettes representing what Roberts intended to be the difference between finished drawings and sketches. roberts was a good judge of accurate transposition of his watercolors and sketches into lithography.Today historians regard Roberts' Holy Land and Egypt as the last link between the established artist and topographical lithography. Since Roberts' prints were the most costly publishing venture in Britain at the time, undertaken by a publisher "on his own responsibility", Roberts sighed on its completion: " . thank God . that with being blessed with health and backed by my ever esteemed friend Louis Haghe I may also say the most satisfactory."References:Micheal Twyman, Lithography, 1800-1850, London, 1970Katherine Sim, David Roberts, London 1984J.R.       London 1842 - David Roberts (1796-1864) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and at the age of ten began an apprenticeship under house painter and decorator, Gavin Beugo. From there he went on to theater stage painting throughout the United Kingdom and then devoted himself to becoming an artist. In August 1838, Roberts traveled to Egypt with a plan to produce drawings to be later turned into paintings and lithographs. He was one of the first to have been granted the privilege of freely roaming and entering many sacred areas from the extremity of Nubia to the Mediterranean, and his images were therefore the first exposure that Europeans had to such splendid, distant places. His work is meticulously precise and yet splendidly evocative, with a skillful and rigid adherence to the truth of costume, detail and effect. Roberts set off on his great and hazardous expedition in August, 1838. In the next eleven months, he visited cities and sites throughout Egypt, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and other Near Eastern countries. The result of Roberts's voyage was the three-volume, color-plate book “The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia”. When it was published in England several years after his journey, Roberts's “The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia” drew extraordinary acclaim. His ambitious project gave views of spectacular landscapes and ancient man-made wonders that viewers had never glimpsed, but Roberts did not confine his renderings to architecture and natural terrain alone. Roberts gave equal attention to the costumes and lifestyles of the Near Eastern peoples. In this way these images both instructed and delighted their viewers with superb ethnological descriptions, sweeping panoramic landscapes, and detailed architectural studies. Because of the unparalleled significance of his groundbreaking work, he was honored with the prestigious award of election to the Royal Academy. This superb tinted lithograph with hand-coloring, Sarepta, from "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, Nubia" measures 15" x 16.75" and is in mint condition. Sarepta was a Phoenician city on the Mediterranean coast, in modern-day Lebanon. Illustrated are a small group of men resting from their travels and a large mountain range receding in the distance. Inscribed on the image is "Sarepta, April 27th 1834."

        The Encyclopedia of Ornament

London: William Pickering, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Book. 4to - over 9¾. 6 pp., plus 59 mostly color plates, including title page, in important work to Gothic Revival which was then sweeping England and elsewhere. Shaw published this and other works that stoked and slaked interest in the movement whose roots can be traced to the Romantic Movement that took hold in the late eighteenth century. Shaw, in his meticulous rendering of Gothic ornamentation as expressed in various forms and objects anticipated the majesterial comprehensive works on ornament to come by Owen Jones, Racinet and others. This book can be enjoyed for both the intrinsic beauty of its plates and for its systematic presentation of form. Condition is VG. Plain cloth binding is tight. Some light foxing and toning on some plates, but fortunately, the more brilliant and exciting plates tend to be less afflicted by these issues.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans 1842. - Louisa Mary Barwell (1800-1885) was the daughter of inventor and writer on music, Richard Mackenzie Bacon (1776-1844), and from the age of eighteen, she was associated with her father in the editorship of the Quarterly Musical Magazine and Review (1818-1830). After her marriage to wine merchant John Barwell, she turned her attention to the composition of educational works, contributing regularly to the Quarterly Journal of Education and the New Monthly Magazine.

First Edition. The first systematic textbook and atlas of plastic surgery of the face, and the second general work on plastic surgery published in France. - Labat (1832) and Blandin (1836) produced the first treatise on plastic surgery in France, followed in 1842 by Serre. The double - page plates are pre- and post - operative portraits, with insets of operative techniques. - Serre was the chief exponent of the "sliding" or "French" method, which he applied in his textbook in various facial operations. The method was intended originally for eyelid reconstruction, but was applied to replacing other parts "on the flat." - - Michel Serre (1799.1848) was the student and successor of Jacques Mathieu Delpech (1777-1832) who performed the first rhinoplasty in France in 1823 (see G-M 5741.1) and pioneered in the correction of congenital facial deformities. Delpech, however, wrote no separate work on plastic surgery. - Serre's textbook incorporates his teachings. Zeis gives Serre credit for some new additions to plastic surgery, and points out that his first plate shows implantation of skin from the palm of the hand to reconstruct the columella. This is acknowledged despite the conflicts between German and French surgeons over priority in the new field. Zeis, of course, was a great partisan of the Germans, and claimed that Dieffenbach had originated the so-called "French" method which Serre promoted (ibid. 102-03). Serre, while not claiming that he invented it, argues in his historical account that the method originated in France. Exceptionally rare on the market in any condition. - - Recens.: Zeis in Schm. Jahrb. xlvii (1845), p.131; Gz. méd. de Par., x (1842), p.653; Brit. and for. med. Rev. xix (1845), p.396. - - Gnudi & Webster 324.

Jahrb. xlvii (1845), p.131; Gz. med. de Par., x (1842), p.653; Brit. and for. med. Rev. xix (1845), p.396. - - Gnudi & Webster 324. Dulieu, (Ed.), La Medecine a Montpellier (1990) pp.197-98; Zeis 587, 1090, 1154, 1398,1509; Zeis Index (Patterson) 643 (very detailed review), 1177, 1241, 1479, 2064, and pp.108-109.

Precis le redressement des dents, ou expose des moyens rationales des prevenir et de orriger les deviationes des dents; suivi de quelques reflexions sur les obturateurs du palais.

. Seconde Edition. - Paris, Bechet Jne et Labe, Libraires, 1842, 8°, VI, 178 pp., 8 lith. Tafeln mit 16 Abb., orig. broschiertes Exemplar in Halbleinenband.. Second edition (first: 1841) of a classic work in 19th century technical dentistry presenting several new procedures and instruments., with tipped-in single-page of author's text recommending the present work to colleagues, in modern marbled cloth-backed boards, title lettered in gilt on backstrip, uncut, orig. printed wrappers bound in. - J. M. Alexis Schange (1807-?, French) "in 1841 published the first work confined to orthodontics. He introduced a modification of the screw, the clamp band, and, in 1842, 3 years after the vulcanization process had been developed, rubber bands (actually, sections of rubber tubing). He also coined the term anchorage." Norman Wahl, Orthodontics in 3 millennia. Chapter 1: Antiquity to the mid-19th century. American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 127/2 (2005), pp.255-259. - "Schange's "Precis sur le redressement des dents," etc., (1841), follows closely the idea of his countryman Lefoulon. He describes the development of the teeth, their eruption and the procedure of the eruption of the permanent teeth. He, like many of his contemporaries, did not favor the extraction of the deciduous teeth, but did not agree with Lefoulon that the arch narrowed on account of this. - Schange accurately described the occlusion of the teeth both bucco- lingually and mesiodistally, and recognized four varieties of irregularities. - - 1. Abnormalities in number. - 2. Abnormalities of form. - 3. Abnormalities of position. Migration and transposition. - 4. Abnormalities of direction. - a. Abnormalities of direction of individual teeth. - 1. Deviation anteriorly. 2. Deviation posteriorly. 3. Deviation laterally. 4. Deviation rotations. - b. Abnormalities of relation of the dental arches. 1. Protrusion, retrusion and inversion. - c. Abnormalities of occlusion. - - The fourth variety of Schange particularly attracts our attention: "The varieties which the teeth may present in the relation of their direction are undoubtedly the most frequent, and at the same time those which most merit out attention because they are those which are most amenable to surgical treatment. These varieties are of two kinds, according as to whether they consist in abnormality of direction of the teeth themselves or in an abnormal relationship of the dental arches to one another. - "The former, those which depend on simple change in the direction of the teeth, are divided into ANTERIOR, POSTERIOR, LATERAL and ROTARY obliquities * * *." The varieties of direction of the second class, those which depend on the abnormal relation of the arches to each other, have been given the name of protrusion, retrusion, etc. Finally, from the combination of simultaneous existence of several or all the deformities just outlined and classified, there results an arrangement which is termed ENGRENEMENT (interdigitation of the cusps). - "It is one of the most obstinate of the abnormal conditions which dental art has to overcome * * *." - Schange mentions three ways of obtaining space in correcting irregularities. First, by filing, which he disapproved of. Second, extraction, which allows too much space. Third, by the enlargement of the arch. - He also devised a form of anchorage, a marked improvement over the crib of Delabarre, because of its simplicity and smaller size, It consisted of pieces of wire or narrow strips of gold bent to conform closely to the necks of the two or three teeth that it surrounded, with a spur attached to rest on the occlusal surfaces. This space was used primarily to prevent the crib from slipping and irritating the peridental membrane. It thus served a different purpose than the one of Delabarre, in that it was not intended to interfere with occlusion, but for the purpose of anchorage, and in securing the ligatures. - Schange also described three kinds of ligatures-silk, linen or grass line, and fine platinum or gold wires. He was not in favor of metal ligatures, on account of the difficulty of attachment, but preferred the silk or grass line, for they absorbed moisture and required little attention. Numerous appliances were devised by Schange. In connection with these, mention must be made of the screw as used by him. For the first time, we find the screw applied in regulating appliances on a clamp band, although having been used previously, in direct movement of the teeth, as a threaded wire by Delabarre; by Lintott, Carabelli, and others, "the honor of the introduction" (of the screw) "of which has been erroneously divided between Dwinnel of New York, Gaine of England" and Schange of Paris." Weinberger, Orthodontics I, pp.279-283 - see - CHRISTIAN DEMANGE: JEAN MELCHIOR ALEXIS SCHANGE, ORTHODONTISTE DU XIXE SIECLE.       New York:. 1842.. A decorative broadside advertising "The New Low-Pressure Steamboat Troy, Captain A. Gorham". The fare is listed at a $1 - in 1825, under the Livingston-Fulton monopoly of the North River Steamboat Line, it had been $4. The monopoly was dissolved in 1824 following the landmark Gibbons v. In 1819 there were only nine steamboats in operation on the Hudson River; by 1840, customers could choose from more than 100 in service. This Steamboat and Captain were advertised at the head of "Benjamin's New Map of the Hudson River, 1844". 9 1/2 x 10 5/8", a sml. closed tear in the top margin through the "g" of "Morning"; a little marked but remarkably good.
