        Cram's Universal Terrestrial Globe

Indianapolis: George F. Cram & Co.. Tabletop globe. 9 inch diameter. 12 inches tall including turned wood stand on rectangular base. 2 sets of 12 coated-paper gores over pasteboard. Circular cartouche in south-east Indian Ocean. Some chipping to varnish on stand and minimal overall wear, including light cracking of coating, paint smudges, and surface wear. This wonderful globe is a charming document of the interwar period. Colored in blue and yellow, the globe evidences a number of geographic features specific to this era, including French Indochina and French West Africa, the Mongolian People's Republic, Italian Somaliland, the puppet state of Manchuria, and the Ukraine noted as part of the USSR. In addition, there is also an Analemma scale off the coast of Mexico, which indicates the sun's declination and the equation of time for every day of the year. Also labeled are aeronautical distances, in red, and ocean currents in white. The globe is in good condition with some chipping to varnish on stand, some general light crackling to coating on gores, a few paint smudges as well as a couple of small areas of surface wear. After serving in the Union army, George F. Cram (1842-1928) joined his uncle's map business and later established his own engraving and publishing firm in Chicago in 1869. As the city grew in significance as a transit hub, area publishing firms incorporated new railway routes that ran through the city into increasingly detailed and elaborate renderings of the country. Cram was especially regarded for his use of cerography, an innovative wax-engraving printing technique, that allowed for large-scale maps that could be easily a and efficiently updated. In the 1930s, the business moved to Indianapolis and began making globes, for which they are still known today. This map exemplifies its work.

Imprimerie Royal, Paris 1842 - First edition. In publisher's paper. Printed title label on spine. viij, 423, (1) and 9 folding plates. With Champollion's article (pp. 73-136), illustrated with six folding plates. Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832) most known for his breakthrough in the decipherment of the Rosetta Stone and showing that the Egyptian writing system was a combination of phonetic and ideographic signs. This study of Champollion is about the symbols used for the division of time in the hieroglyphic, hieratic and demotic writing systems. Due to Champollion's early death, many of his works, this too, were published posthumously. The essay had a separate edition with 1841 imprint, however on its half title it refer to itself as an offprint of this edition ("Extrait de la 1re partie du tome XV des Mémoires de L'académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres.") This volume contains essays by Jean Marie Pardessus, Pierre Daunou, Nicolas-Maximilien-Sidoine Séguier de Saint-Brisson, Charles Louis Mollevaut, Charles Athanase Walckenaer, Desiré-Raoul Rochette, Jules Berger de Xivrey, Alexis Paulin Paris and Natalis de Wailly whose article is illustrated with three large, folding, coloured lithographs (printed by Kaeppelin) with the fragments of papyrus written in Latin in the collection of the Bibliothèque royale. Untrimmed. Occasional minor foxing. Spine slightly worn, rear wrapper with a trace of crease. Volume number in blue pencil on front panel. Otherwise a fine copy. In publisher's paper. Printed title label on spine [Attributes: First Edition]

FIRST EDITION OF BECQUEREL'S FIRST REPORT OF THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHS OF SOLAR SPECTRA. Becquerel took the photos in 1842 and they were first reported here in this volume. Included is Becquerel's methodology in preparing silver plates so as to obtain an image of the solar spectrum. He had creatively allowed a ray to impinge on a plate of silver covered in subchloride of silver. The image was not fixed, and could only be viewed in darkness. A contemporary account catches the 'magic' of this work: Becquerel impressed "on a silver plate an image of the solar spectrum, or in other words, the oblong coloured band of the seven prismatic colours, produced by decomposing a ray of light. This brilliant image (a miniature, and so to speak, artificial rainbow) Becquerel imprinted in a durable manner on a silver plate previously exposed to the action of the chloride. This fact sufficiently proves that the photogenic reproduction of colours is at least within the bounds of possibility" (Eliz Cook's Journal, 3-4, 95). ALSO FIRST EDITION OF PASTEUR'S REVOLUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DISCOVERY OF MOLECULAR ASSYMETRY. "Pasteur's discovery counts among the most important advances in chemistry and constitutes the foundation of stereochemistry" ("Citation for Chemical Breakthrough Awards: Choosing Pasteur's Award-Winning Publication" in Bull. Hist. Chem., 38, 2013). Pasteur's announcement appeared in this Comptes, but because he wrote two more detailed papers later, there has always been an academic argument as to which paper is of the greatest import and should serve as the official citation. In 2013, the American Chemical Society wanted to award the Citation for Chemical Breakthrough award, an award given to a particularly seminal work. After performing a full assessment of each paper, this reported in "Citation for Chemical Breakthrough Awards: Choosing Pasteur's Award-Winning Publication" in Bull. Hist. Chem., Vol. 38, 1, 2013, it was decided that the focused Comptes paper was the most important because it was the initial announcement of an entirely new and revolutionary observation with crucial implications for molecular structure. "Soon after graduating from the École Normale Supérieure, Pasteur became puzzled by the discovery of the German chemist Eilhardt Mitscherlich, who had shown that tartrates and paratartrates behaved differently toward polarized light: tartrates rotated the plane of polarized light, whereas paratartrates did not. This was unusual because the compounds displayed identical chemical properties. "Pasteur noted that the tartrate crystals exhibited asymmetric forms that corresponded to their optical asymmetry. He made the surprising observation that crystalline paratartrate consisted of a mixture of crystals in a right-handed configuration. However, when these crystals were separated manually, he found that they exhibited right and left asymmetry. In other words, a balanced mixture of both right and left crystals was optically inactive. Thus, Pasteur discovered the existence of molecular asymmetry, the foundation of stereochemistry, as it was revealed by optical activity. "Over the course of the next 10 years, Pasteur further investigated the ability of organic substances to rotate the plane of polarized light. He also studied the relationship that existed between crystal structure and molecular configuration. His studies convinced him that asymmetry was one of the fundamental characteristics of living matter" (Louis Pasteur Biography, Science Control). CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete volume. Ex-libris bearing only a deaccessioned stamp on the back of the title page and slight ghosting at the spine where a spine level has been removed. 4to (11 x 8 inches; 275 x 200mm). [6], 728, [2]. Bound in clean full blue cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound. Small stain at the head of the last twenty pages, very occasional toning, otherwise clean and bright throughout.

Daniel Rice and J.G. Clarke Philadelphia -44? 1842 - Original hand-coloured lithographed plate from History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Framed and glazed. Overall size: 36.4 by 50.8cm. Thomas McKenny, formerly a director in the Office of Indian Affairs, together with James Hall, a lawyer and writer on the west, embarked on the publication of these lithographs as a way of providing a true visual representation of a fast vanishing culture. The fine coloured illustrations are taken from the work of the artist Charles Bird King who, where possible, painted the subjects from life in his Washington studio, or otherwise re-worked paintings after the watercolours of the artist James Otto Lewis, who had produced an earlier, albeit, cruder, series of lithographs. Only four of the original oil paintings survive (the rest having been destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865), so these lithographs provide the sole remaining likenesses for some of the leading native American leaders of the early nineteenth century. History of the Indian Tribes of North America was the most elaborate publication in the United States up to that time. Howes M129; cf. Sabin 43410a.

The Prose or Younger Edda commonly ascribed to Snorri Sturluson

Stockholm. London.: Norstedt and Sons. William Pickering., 1842 In half maroon morocco with worn green marbled boards, some gilt tooling, edges worn. New spine, retaining most of the old, raised bands, decorative gilt tooling and titles. Internally, green marbled endpapers, t.e.g, large bookplate to fod (FA Barrett), [5], + tipped in errata, (vi-viii), [4], 115 pp, very occasional spotting. Rare. (Allibone 450. Graesse 462)Title continues: Translated from the Old Norse. Contains: Gefiun's ploughing.--Gylfi's mocking.--Bragi's telling.--Foreword to the Edda.--Afterword to Gylfi's mocking.--Afterword to the EddaSturluson was an Icelandic historian, poet, and politician. He was elected twice as a lawspeaker at the Icelandic parliament, the Althing. He was the author of the Prose Edda or Younger Edda, which consists of Gylfaginning ("the fooling of Gylfi"), a narrative of Norse mythology, the Skáldskaparmál, a book of poetic language, and the Háttatal, a list of verse forms. He was also the author of the Heimskringla, a history of the Norwegian kings that begins with legendary material in Ynglinga saga and moves through to early medieval Scandinavian history. For stylistic and methodological reasons, Snorri is often taken to be the author of Egil's saga. As an historian and mythographer, Snorri is remarkable for proposing the hypothesis (in the Prose Edda) that mythological gods begin as human war leaders and kings whose funeral sites develop cults (see euhemerism).         [Two broadsides concerning the resignation of leniente coronel Pedro Pena]. Vindicacion [with] Al Publico

Cartajena: Impr. de los Herederos de J.A. Calvo, 1842. First edition. Broadsides. Very good copies with some wear, small inked number at top margin. 'Al Publico' with folds, wax seal, and tear opposite; 'Vindicacion' removed from larger volume with one or two stitch holes, some dampstaining at fore margin just affecting a few words. 12 x 8 in.; 10 x 7.5 in. Pedro Antonio de la Pena (1805-1861) was a native of Popayán from an illustrious family, appointed Military Commander of Ocaña Canton in 1831, and in 1840 was appointed governor of Ocaña and Mompós during the Guerra de los Supremos (1839-1842). Despite his exemplary behavior in support of the government, he was accused of sympathy for the rebel forces. The first document, 'Vindicacion', composed at Mompos [Santa Cruz de Mompox] 31 de Marzo de 1842, published 7 de Abril, and signed in print Enos Patriotas, refers to the government's orders and refutes the claims that he joined the Federal (rebellious) forces. The second document, 'Al Publico', was composed at Mompos 25 de Junio 1842, published 5 de Julio, and signed Sus Amigos. It was mailed from Ocana, as noted on the reverse; in it Pena is praised highly. In 1846 Pena went on to serve as commander of Battalion 7, and in 1848, with the concurrence of the Senate, was promoted to full Colonel. See Manuel Ezequiel Corrales: Efemérides y anales del Estado de Bolívar (Bogata: 1899), T. III). Extremely rare. No other known copies of either document.

Zur Erkenntniss unsrer staatswirthschaftlichen Zustände. Von --. Erstes Heft: Fünf Theoreme [all published]

. G. Barnewitz (Rudolf Brandes), Neubrandenburg und Friedland (Berlin) - First edition. In contemporary blind stamped cloth, lettered gilt. 1842. First edition of one of Rodbertus' most important works, containing his critique and development of Ricardian theory. Johann Karl Rodbertus-Jagatzow (1805-1875) was a German economist, the founder of 'scientific' socialism. He was trained as a lawyer and involved in politics following the 1848 revolution, but soon he was retired and devoted himself to write on topics of political economy. Rodbertus is most renown for his accusation against Marx of having "plundered" him and of having "freely used in his Capital without quoting him" his work Zur Erkenntnis, and it was Engels (in the Preface to the First Edition of Marx's The Poverty of Philosophy) who refuted these charges. However at the same place Engels admits that "for the time when Rodbertus' Zur Erkenntniss [?] appeared, it was certainly an important book. His development of Ricardo's theory of value in that one direction was a very promising beginning. Even if it was new only for him and for Germany, still as a whole, it stands on a par with the achievements of the better ones among his English predecessors". [Einaudi 4806; Goldsmiths' 33076; Humpert 8130; Kress C.5941; Menger, col. 309; Stammhammer I, 205.]. Spine sunned, front cover somewhat worned. Slight foxing throughout. Otherwise a fine copy.         Barnaby Rudge : Lea & Blanchard 1842 Bound from the Parts - The Earliest Separate Edition to be Issued in the United States

Lea & Blanchard Philadelphia 1842 - A good looking copy of the earliest printing, by Lea & Blanchard, of the first separate edition of Barnaby Rudge to be published in America. Lea & Blanchard announced in March of 1841 that "It has been thought advisable to publish it [ Barnaby Rudge ] in this country as a separate story, free from the connection with Master Humphrey's Clock." The original 19 parts were sold from March 12 through December 18, 1841. Text shows stab holes throughout, characteristic of the edition sold in parts. Perhaps the second most important point of issue is the blank leaf which occurs after page 246, which is present in this copy. No advertisements or paper wrappers are bound with this copy. The binding is quite solid, in paper covered boards with leather spine & corners, tightly sewn, only showing normal wear & rubbing on the covers, hinges, corners. The spine has 6 compartments separated with a single gilt line; "Barnaby/Rudge" is stamped in the second compartment, "2" in the third, "Master Humphrey's Clock" in the fifth. So, this volume lacks its mate. Plain endpapers, tanned a bit & with spotting; single binders' leaf front & rear, with text beginning with the Title Page/CR, Preface leaf, Illustrations leaf [51 engravings on wood], Tipped-in Hourglass Plate, facing the text, Page (9)-323 [324]. Neat Owner Signature on front free endpaper dated 1842. The text is quite sharp, page numbers appear undamaged, paper mostly white, a few spots & tanning, two pages with transparent ink spatters. Measures 6" by 9.75" [15cm by 24.7cm ]. Ref: Smith, page 177, Charles Dickens Bibliography of His First American Editions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
