Barnaby Rudge : Lea & Blanchard 1842 Bound from the Parts - The Earliest Separate Edition to be Issued in the United States

Lea & Blanchard Philadelphia 1842 - A good looking copy of the earliest printing, by Lea & Blanchard, of the first separate edition of Barnaby Rudge to be published in America. Lea & Blanchard announced in March of 1841 that "It has been thought advisable to publish it [ Barnaby Rudge ] in this country as a separate story, free from the connection with Master Humphrey's Clock." The original 19 parts were sold from March 12 through December 18, 1841. Text shows stab holes throughout, characteristic of the edition sold in parts. Perhaps the second most important point of issue is the blank leaf which occurs after page 246, which is present in this copy. No advertisements or paper wrappers are bound with this copy. The binding is quite solid, in paper covered boards with leather spine & corners, tightly sewn, only showing normal wear & rubbing on the covers, hinges, corners. The spine has 6 compartments separated with a single gilt line; "Barnaby/Rudge" is stamped in the second compartment, "2" in the third, "Master Humphrey's Clock" in the fifth. So, this volume lacks its mate. Plain endpapers, tanned a bit & with spotting; single binders' leaf front & rear, with text beginning with the Title Page/CR, Preface leaf, Illustrations leaf [51 engravings on wood], Tipped-in Hourglass Plate, facing the text, Page (9)-323 [324]. Neat Owner Signature on front free endpaper dated 1842. The text is quite sharp, page numbers appear undamaged, paper mostly white, a few spots & tanning, two pages with transparent ink spatters. Measures 6" by 9.75" [15cm by 24.7cm ]. Ref: Smith, page 177, Charles Dickens Bibliography of His First American Editions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Internally, green marbled endpapers, t.e.g, large bookplate to fod (FA Barrett), [5], + tipped in errata, (vi-viii), [4], 115 pp, very occasional spotting. Rare. (Allibone 450. Graesse 462)Title continues: Translated from the Old Norse. Contains: Gefiun's ploughing.--Gylfi's mocking.--Bragi's telling.--Foreword to the Edda.--Afterword to Gylfi's mocking.--Afterword to the EddaSturluson was an Icelandic historian, poet, and politician. He was elected twice as a lawspeaker at the Icelandic parliament, the Althing. He was the author of the Prose Edda or Younger Edda, which consists of Gylfaginning ("the fooling of Gylfi"), a narrative of Norse mythology, the Skáldskaparmál, a book of poetic language, and the Háttatal, a list of verse forms. He was also the author of the Heimskringla, a history of the Norwegian kings that begins with legendary material in Ynglinga saga and moves through to early medieval Scandinavian history. For stylistic and methodological reasons, Snorri is often taken to be the author of Egil's saga. As an historian and mythographer, Snorri is remarkable for proposing the hypothesis (in the Prose Edda) that mythological gods begin as human war leaders and kings whose funeral sites develop cults (see euhemerism).       18 - [KAKEMONO] Kawabata GYOKUSHO^, artist. HANGING SCROLL OF MT.FUJI. Appears to have the original mid to late Meiji silk mounting with wooden roller handles. The image size, on silk, is X cm. An abbreviate and somewhat abstract Fuji looms in the distance over a haboku style foreground of gnarled trees on a crag. Gyokusho^ (1842-1913) was an important figure in Tokyo art circles at the turn of the century. He had studied Western painting in his youth under Charles Wirgman, but returned to tradition and became (according to Roberts) "the last great representative of the Shijo^ school." He was talented in more than Shijo^ style, however, as this painting illustrates. Haboku is a most difficult technique, which in Japan goes back to Sesshu^. It is often attempted, but hardly ever successfully. This painting is, in our opinion, successful. With uniform toning of the silk and a faint water spot, else very good. A lovely work.

On the correlation of physical forces: Being the substance of a course of Lectures delivered in the London Institution in the year 1843

London: Charles Skipper. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of Grove's proposal of the conservation of energy: "the earliest general account of the principle." In 1842, "Sir W.R. Grove, English judge and man of science, known by his invention of a voltaic cell, explained in a lecture the idea of the interrelation of natural powers, an elaborated it in a book published in 1846 under the title of The Correlation of Physical Forces. This and the independent study in 1847 by the great German physiologist, physicist and matematician H.L.F. von Helmholtz, Ueber die Erhaltung der Kraft, contained the earliest general account of the principle now known as the 'conservation of energy'" (Dampier, A History of Science). "In this essay... Grove argued that all physical forces such as electricity, heat, light, magnetism, and so forth, should be regarded as being correlated, or mutually inter-related. Any one of these forces could be used to produce any of the others such that no particular force could be said to be the particular cause of another. Under particular circumstances any one of them might be the cause and any of the others the effect. In many ways, the essay was an argument against traditional notions of causality. Grove advanced a large number of experimental examples from the various branches of the physical sciences to substantiate his claims. He suggested that the main task of the natural philosopher was to demonstrate how this principle of correlation operated universally" (Oxford DNB). First state: Regarded as the offprint or "unpublished" state, with "by order of the managers of the London Institution, at the request of the proprietors" on title. Contained in a sammelband with a large collection of physics and engineering texts about electricity, electro-magnetism, and telegraphy (22 papers total) in various languages, with a very interesting booklet on the use of the first telegraphic cable between Europe and United-States. Grove's work is complete, with title, Preface, and 52 pages of text. London: Charles Skpper, 1846. Octavo, nineteenth-century half-red morocco over marbled boards. With cropped inscription (from Grove?) on title. A little scuffing to binding, otherwise fine. RARE.

An acclaimed British cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith drafted accurate, detailed charts that earned him the titles of Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, extremely important distinctions during an era when Britain ruled the waves. One of the first great British cartographers of North America, Arrowsmith introduced a new standard of excellence in mapmaking in the late 18th century and almost single-handedly made London the center for the cartographic trade. Arrowsmith built his great success on this ability to attract both commercial and general viewers through his combination of visual and scientific appeal. The most influential and respected map publisher of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Arrowsmith issued maps that were the result of careful synthesis rather than systematic, scientific inquiry. His role in cartographic production was to gather the best available information from a wide variety of sources, weigh the relative merits of conflicting data, and compile the most accurate depiction possible of an area. Arrowsmith accomplished this synthesis better than any other commercial mapmaker of his day and, as a result, his maps were the most sought after and highly prized on three continents. Phillips 6064.         Dialogue between a Latter-day Saint and an Enquirer after Truth. (Reprinted from the Star of January 1.) To which is added, a Solemn Warning to the Methodists. By one who was formerly a Preacher among them

Manchester: Published by P.P. Pratt, [1842]. 4pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] This work has not been sewn. Minor age toning. We are able to locate five institutional copies. According to Crawley " The first three and half pages of this tract, containing the dialogue between Enquirer and Saint, were printed from a rearrangement of the same typesetting used to print the dialogue in the Millennial Star of January 1842. Thomas Smith's 'Interesting Letter from Cheltonham', which is dated December 30, 1841, occupies the last half of the fourth page and appears only in the tract. Apparently this letter reached Parley Pratt after the January issue of the Star had been struck off, and since Smith had asked that his letter be printed and it made an appropriate companion piece for the dialogue, Parley issued the two together on pamphlet form. Dialogue directly attacks the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England, and especially the Methodist Church, without a specific anti-Mormon work in mind, and thus marks a departure from earlier Mormon publications. Undoubtedly it arose out of the clergy's continuing anti-Mormon barrage, which the Star of December comments upon. The dialogue defends immersion as the proper mode of baptism and argues at length against baptizing infants; since the traditional churches erroneously administer this ordinance, it contends, they must be in a state of apostasy. Latter-day Saints avoid these errors, the dialogue concludes, because their doctrines were received by divine revelation. Thomas Smith's letter describes his conversion from Methodism to Mormonism and warns the Methodists not to 'oppose the work of the Lord.'" Crawley 138. Flake/Draper 6567

Harzer gesehen und habe mich überzeugt, dass derselbe auch dem Studium der Pilze, die ausgezeichnete Sorgfalt zugewendet hat, welche wir schon seit langer Zeit an seinen entomologschen Darstellungen bewundern.         Cockatoo Island, Port Jackson

Sydney, 1842. Watercolour, 185 x 295 mm, framed. John Skinner Prout (1805-1876) was a largely self trained artist who arrived in Sydney with his family in December 1840. He remained for several years producing many local views but his efforts to educate the population with a series of lectures on the principles of art was met with a lack of public enthusiasm which greatly disappointed him. He visited Van Diemen's Land in 1844 and was so impressed he returned to collect his family from Sydney and resettle there. On the reverse of this watercolour a contemporary hand has written in pencil 'Cockatoo Island, Port Jackson J.S.Prout 1842', But this work clearly shows Goat Island, similar in perspective to a watercolour held in the National Library Canberra. Carton Booth's Australia has steel engravings of both Goat and Cockatoo Island based on paintings by Prout and the Goat Island image looks the most similar to this view.

London: John Snow, Paternoster-Row, 1842. First edition, seventh thousand. Profusely illustrated throughout with full and partial-page engravings by G. Baxter, including a very finely executed hand-coloured frontispiece and a large folding map of South Africa. 8vo, bound in contemporary beautifully decorated maroon morocco with elaborate arabesque styled gilt and blind decorations on the covers; the spine with dense gilt paneled designs within compartments between raised bands. xvi, 624,12 ads, pp. A clean and handsome copy, very well preserved with only very minor age evidence. AN UNUSUALLY HANDSOME AND ELABORATELY BOUND COPY OF THIS CLASSIC WORK. The preliminary chapters deal with the opinions of the author on the origin of the Hottentots, and give a synopsis of the early work of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, reference being made to the labours of Drs. Vanderkemp and Philip, and other pioneer missionaries who preceded Mr. Moffat. <br> The volume gives a valuable account of mission work among the Bechuanas, with notes on the customs of the natives, and a description of the earlier travels of the author and some information is afforded respecting the reformed savage Namaqua chief &#147;Afrikaner&#148;. The appearance in Cape Town of this convert was the cause of much wonder and astonishment, his arrival having been awaited with considerable skepticism by Lord Charles Somerset, who was much struck with this example of the results of missionary enterprise, and who "expressed his pleasure at seeing thus before him one who had been the scourge of the country and the terror of the border colonists." <br> An interesting account of Moselekatse and his people is given, and it is remarked that this well-known potentate "seemed anxious to please and to exhibit himself and his people to the best advantage." There was, however, considerable difficulty m ascertaining the chief&#39;s real character, as no one in his dominions "dared breathe a syllable that was not calculated to set him forth as the best and noblest of beings, immaculate in his actions, the very perfection of all that was lovely just, and good.&#39;&#39; He was very gracious to the missionaries, and appreciated their previous kindness to his envoys, and Moffat gained considerable influence over him, and was instrumental in obtaining his permission to allow a mission station to be established in his country. <br> There are some particulars concerning Dr. Andrew Smith&#39;s expedition into the interior in I835, and there is an ample account of the labors of the various missionary societies engaged amongst the Bechuanas, Matabeles, Basutos, and other races at this period. A highly important and unusually scarce book in the core collection of the early exploration and settlement of Africa.

Moon, F.G., London 1842 - The Prints of David Roberts:Part 1 - The PrinterLouis Haghe (1806-1885) was one of the msot skillful exponents of the tinted lithograph who became a leading reproductive lithographer in England and on the Continent. Haghe's reputation as a lithographer was primarily based upon topographical views, of which Twyman notes "his most important work of this kind, the translation of Roberts' sketches of the Holy Land, represents the culmination of his art".Part 2 - The Publication of Roberts' Holy Land and EgyptRoberts first sketched in his journals "on the spot" the vaious subjects which, on returning to London, he transcribed into finished paintings and watercolors. These then formed the basis of the lithographs drawn and printed by Louis Haghe. It is interesting to note that in some instances Roberts' original drawings were twice or three times the size of the published print, which indicated the skill of Haghe and his assistants in transferring Roberts' designs onto lithographic stones.Part 3 - A Genesis of Roberts' PrintsDavid Roberts fulfilled a boyhood dream by visiting the East and recording what he saw there; by August 1838 he had resolved to "visit the Holy Land, and make drawings of the scenes of sacred history and the antiquities of Egypt". By this time Roberts had already established himself as a successful topographical artist and published his set of Spanish scenery as tinted lithographs, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, 1837. Eventually he would be elected to the prestigious Royal Academy on the strength of his topographical paintings.Part 4 - The PlatesRoberts' Holy Land and Egypt project has been called "the most ambitious work ever published in England with lithographic plates" (according to Micheal Twyman). Its production involved over 600 lithographic stones used over an eight to nine year period. It is generally agreed the lithographers Day & Haghe were the most efficient for such large scale work, while Louis Haghe himself was a master lithographer. The plate formats strongly influenced their presentation as prints: large full-page and small half-page vignettes representing what Roberts intended to be the difference between finished drawings and sketches. roberts was a good judge of accurate transposition of his watercolors and sketches into lithography.Today historians regard Roberts' Holy Land and Egypt as the last link between the established artist and topographical lithography. Since Roberts' prints were the most costly publishing venture in Britain at the time, undertaken by a publisher "on his own responsibility", Roberts sighed on its completion: " . thank God . that with being blessed with health and backed by my ever esteemed friend Louis Haghe I may also say the most satisfactory."References:Micheal Twyman, Lithography, 1800-1850, London, 1970Katherine Sim, David Roberts, London 1984J.R.
