[Anonymous]
The view shows the Cerro de Montevideo from the coastline; the water of the River Plate is brownish, as it ought to be. Even though sadly anonymous, the quality of the drawing is good. Artist-travellers often joined scientific and commercial expeditions to South America with the hope of portraying the cities and peoples encountered during the voyage. This is a perfect example of an amateur artist-traveller.

Buckley, Arabella
First edition, first impression of Arabella Buckley's sequel to her popular children's book The Fairy-Land of Science. An attractive copy with the gilt design on the upper board still fresh and bright. Author Arabella Buckley (1840-1929) was an authoritative popularizer of science and was for several years secretary to the zoologist Sir Charles Lyell. She was "personally familiar with the leading scientists and scientific theories of her day, lectured on natural science from 1876 until 1888, was editor of Mary Somerville's Connexion of the Physical Sciences (1877) and Heinrich Leutemann's Animals from Life (1887), and produced a set of botanical tables for the use of junior students (1876)... Buckley was deeply aware of the nature of science writing and realized that science, though based in fact or experiment, was transmitted as a literary construction" (ODNB). "Two other books, The Fairy-Land of Science and its sequel, Through Magic Glasses (1890), demonstrate her skill at telling the stories of science. In Fairy-Land Buckley generated interest in her scientific subjects by borrowing the language of fairy stories and wizardry to reinforce her ultimate belief that the wonders of science not only paralleled but surpassed the wonders of fairyland. In its sequel, Through Magic Glasses, she focused more closely on what childlike eyes can see, calling on the help of the telescope, stereoscope, photographic camera, and microscope, and a fictional guide, a magician into whose chamber the reader immediately enters and through whose eyes the world is viewed." This is early edition of Colbran's New Guide For Tunbridge Wells has both the Advertisement and Preface dated January 1840 and may therefore be identified with Goulden 65. It is a reissue of the 1839 edition with a cancel title page dated 1840 (the map is still dated 1839). According to Goulden, too many copies were normally printed of these guides, leading to a complicated sequence of cancels and reissues of the preliminaries of the 1839-40 editions, which were otherwise essentially identical. John Colbran (1809-84) was a former apprentice of John Clifford, the other important publisher of Tunbridge Wells guidebooks in the first half of the nineteenth century. He first appeared as a bookseller and stationer in 1833. Colbran employed James Phippen (1795?-1862), who had written guides for several other Kent towns, to edit his guidebook Colbran's guides are a mine of information and difficult to find in good such good … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAZZOLDI (Angelo)
[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

ARROWSMITH, John
Arrowsmith, John, London 1840 - Map. Engraving with hand outline. Images measures 24.5" x 20.5". Sheet measures 25.75" x 22" This elegant map of India covers from Punjab in modern day Pakistan south to include Sri Lanka or Ceylon. Depicts the subcontinent when it was under the control of the British East India Company. Color outlines show the British possessions in red, independent states in green and territories under British influence in yellow. The map is highly detailed and labeled with cities, river, roads and mountains. Some regions extend beyond the borders of the map, into the margins. The map is in very good condition with minor soiling and offsetting. The center fold shows little wear with a small tear in the left margin. John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) was from a family of London based cartographers and publishers, and was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. His "London Atlas," known for its understated elegance, is considered one of the first truly "modern" atlases of the nineteenth century. This map is a fine example of Arrowsmith's work.
