Buxton, Thomas Fowell
John Murray, London, 1840. Small quarto. (14) [viii] 582pp. + 1 fold-out map at the front. Modern 3/4 dark blue leather, over light blue cloth boards. Gilt-stamped lettering, motifs and tooling on the spine and the front cover. Marbled endpapers. The work is Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton's two part treatise on the horrors of the slave trade and the solutions for ending it. Bound in at the front is "Prospectus of the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa, Instituted June, 1839". At the time of the book's publication, the active slave trade had already been abolished (1807) and slavery itself (1833) throughout the British Empire, but The Anti-Slavery Society - of which Buxton was a prominent member - continued to campaign for the end of slavery worldwide. The "prospectus" bound in at the front, acts as recap on the state of affairs as it pertained to slavery at the time, specifically in Africa. The front includes a detailed 8.5 x19" fold-out map of central and west Africa, giving geographic context to the regions and locations discussed in the book. Binding with library stickers at the tail of the spine and on the front cover. Light rubbing to extremities and some light cracking to the head of the spine. Library ink stamps at the top and bottom edges of the book block. Interior with a library sticker at the interior front cover, and a library pocket pasted on at the interior back cover. Small tear at the top right corner of the front free endpaper. Light foxing and damn staining to the title page, and the fold-out map. Book block tight ov … [Click Below for Full Description]

[West Point] Park, Roswell
Philadelphia: Henry Perkins, 1840. Hardcover. Very good overall. A charming book focusing on the geographical description of the landscape for West Point as a military garrison, a historical description of its prominence and importance during the Revolutionary War, and the establishment of the US Military Academy, its teachers and rules governing the cadets. Slim small 8vo, brown moire cloth boards, 140pp, spine sunned, corners bumped, scattered fox spotting throughout not affecting text. Neat previous owner name at front free end paper. We locate only one record of a copy with the folding map at page 9, (a Hathi trust digital copy showing the map) which is not present in this copy. It has clearly not been removed from this copy, so it seems likely that some copies were issued with the map, and many without. OCLC: 824482968.

KAMADA, Keishu (or Gendai)
81 woodcut illus., all finely colored by hand and 42 folding flaps. 60 folding leaves. 8vo, later wrappers (rather wormed, carefully & sensitively repaired), new stitching. Japan: 1840. First edition of this extremely rare and important book in the history of anesthesiology and surgery; this work contains what we believe are the oldest printed illustrations of surgery under general anesthesia and the first illustrations of an anesthesiologist. These illustrations show resection of a testicular tumor and intrauterine hematoma. A caption (written in Chinese) in each illustration clearly states surgery was performed under general anesthesia using mafutsuto. Seishu Hanaoka was the world's first surgeon on record to successfully perform surgery under general anesthesia. On 13 October 1804, Hanaoka successfully operated on Aiya Kan, a 60-year-old woman, to remove breast cancer under Mafutsusan general anesthesia. This surgery is the world's earliest known verified case of surgery under anesthesia. Following the success of his surgeries under anesthesia, Hanaoka became well-known throughout Japan. He established a private medical school where he trained more than 1000 students, including Keishu Kamada (1794-1854). Because Hanaoka did not write any books, the writings of Kamada are important sources for investigating his master's techniques of anesthesiology. Following five years of study with Hanaoka, Gendai returned to his native island of Shikoku in southwestern Japan, where he became known as Japan's best surgeon. He performed many plastic, orthopedic, and pediatric surgical pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LA PEROUSE] WOOLNOTH, Thomas (engraver)
London: William Mackenzie, circa 1840. Stipple engraving, 170 x 120 mm (plate size). Good. Almost identical to the portrait printed by Charles Knight (Nan Kivell & Spence p.171), this one has the addition of bushes in the background and the sky. La Pérouse was born at Albi in 1741 and was commissioned in 1785 by Louis XVI to head an expedition to the Pacific Ocean. He was under instructions to investigate whaling and fur prospects, as well as the possibility of establishing French territorial claims in Australia. La Pérouse was the first French explorer to visit Hawaii, and later landed in Botany Bay just five days after the First Fleet arrived. After establishing a friendly rapport with the English officers, La Pérouse refitted his ships and sailed for the Solomon Islands, but was never heard from again. In 1791, the French government commissioned d'Entrecasteaux to lead an expedition in search of La Pérouse, but failed to find any trace of his ships. It was not until 1827 that the charismatic Pacific trader Peter Dillon traced the wrecks expedition to Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands, after he was offered a sword that clearly belonged to a French officer, on the neighbouring Tikopia island.
