Paul Gavarni
[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Three 1840s-50s Stewart & MacDonald Lace Sample Books. - - - DISCUSSION: Founded in 1826, Stewart & MacDonald were one of the great textile and fashion enterprises of 19th century Scotland. These three books include samples of white and black laces in a variety of styles, both for use in fashion and for tablecloths and related articles. The laces are set against blue and yellow backgrounds and the albums themselves are quite lovely. - - - DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: 3 Sample books. 8"x12" and 7"x12.5". Two with blue coated page stock, 20 pages each, with lace samples tipped in. Not all pages ever had samples, and some samples were removed at some point. The third album opens accordion-style to show the laces against a yellow ground trimmed with gold and framed in white on twelve pages. Again, some samples were removed at some point. Covers with wear and soil, contents clean and good overall. GAUTIER
[Click Below for Full Description]

Crabbe, Rev. George
John James Chidley, London, 1840. Octavo, bound in contemporary pebbled morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece. With a fore edge painting of a 19th century cityscape. In near fine condition. The earliest fore-edge paintings date possibly as far back as the 10th century; these earliest paintings were symbolic designs. Early English fore-edge paintings, believed to date to the 14th century, presented heraldic designs in gold and other colors. The first known example of a disappearing fore-edge painting (where the painting is not visible when the book is closed) dates from 1649. The earliest signed and dated fore-edge painting dates to 1653: a family coat of arms painted on a 1651 Bible. Around 1750, the subject matter of fore-edge paintings changed from simply decorative or heraldic designs to landscapes, portraits and religious scenes, usually painted in full color. Modern fore-edge painted scenes have a lot more variation as they can depict numerous subjects not found on earlier specimens. These include scenes that are erotic, or they might involve scenes from novels (like Jules Verne, Sherlock Holmes or Dickens, etc.). In many cases, the chosen scene will depict a subject related to the book, but in other cases it did not. In one instance, the same New Brunswick landscape was applied to both a Bible and to a collection of poetry and plays. The choice of scenes is made by either the artist, bookseller or owner, thus the variety is wide. The technique was popularized in the 18th century by John Brindley (1732-1756), publisher and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large octavo, 3 volumes, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised gilt bands top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, engraved frontispiece in each volume, illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. From the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest with his bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Tipped in to the front and rear of each volume is an extensive collection containing pages from a number of the original Master's Humphrey's Clock serials in addition to several period reviews and article related to Dickens. In near fine condition. A unique example containing the stories in their original form. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical, published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens, the magazine included both short stories and two novels (The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge). Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels, and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together, he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848, and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However, the short stories and the nov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brownson, Orestes Augustus
Boston : B.H. Greene, 1840-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. [Christian Democracy; Early American Labor and Social Reform] Bound in fine black leather. Marbled end sheets. 94 pages. Scattered foxing throughout. <br> Orestes Brownson (1803 - 1876) was a transcendentalist thinker, social reformer, and pastor. Interestingly, he converted from Presbyterianism to Universalism and eventually to Catholicism. In 1836 he established the Society for Union and Progress, his personal attempt at a universal Christian church. Brownson held strong convictions in favor of egalitarianism and democracy and was influenced by the Saint-Simonists. Most of his congregates were working men and women and Brownson felt intense sympathy for their struggles in early American manufacturing system. Brownson rejected the inequitable class structure and contemporary abuses in American industrial capitalism. This led him down a path toward radical socialism and a rejection of some property rights. In July of 1840, he wrote a scathing article on "The Laboring Classes," which attacked the "oppressive" system of labor in the north. In this article, Brownson described the gradual destruction of the slave system and its replacement with a wage system, equally as oppressive. This attack on industrial capitalism and hereditary property led to an outcry against Brownson (Pres. Martin Van Buren is said to have attributed his loss in the close 1840 election against Harrison to the reaction to Brownson's comments. (See Van Buren's papers) While this is hyperbole, it indicates the significance of the … [Click Below for Full Description]
