Henry Gally Knight
John Murray, 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Large folio, 58 x 40 cm. Bound in later, rebacked 3/4 leather, over marbled boards. 5 raised bands. Black leather spine label. Marbled end papers. 30 tinted lithographic plates (including pictorial title). 3 colored engraved plates. Foxing and perforated institutional stamp on title page. In later cloth slipcase and chemise. Creswell 263; Ibrahim Hilmy 1, 345. Not in Abbey. George Belton Moore, artist. W. Walton, Lithographer. Charles Joseph Hullmandel, Lithographic Printer.
Henry Gally Knight traveled to Normandy and Italy in the 1830s to document the architectural remains of the Normans. This resulted in several publications: An Architectural Tour in Normandy (1836); Saracenic and Norman Remains (1840); and The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Italy (1842-1844). (ODNB, Warwick William Wroth, Knight, Henry, 1892). Knight authored this work to argue that the evolution of the pointed arch in Norman architecture predated the influence of the returning Crusades. His argument continues that the pointed arch (a characteristic of Islamic architecture) was in fact adopted in Norman Sicily prior to the Crusades and reflected Norman tendency to adopt the style, form and employee the workmen of the local region. In 1841, Knight was named fellow of the Royal Society for his work in architecture and other pursuits. A scarce architectural title.
This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Alfred GUESDON
Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L’Italie à vol d’oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali citt … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig: 1840. Historical book. This was presented to the reverend Francis Kilvert by J. B. Winter in the year 1847. A sprig from his residence has been inserted and anchored to the inside front page one year after Rev. Kilvert died, in 1864 and is inscribed. Francis Kilvert (1793-1863) was an English cleric, schoolmaster, antiquary, and literary editor. His nephew was the famous diarist, Francis Kilvert (1840-). Born at Westgate Street, Bath, Somerset on Good Friday 1793, he was the eldest son of Francis Kilvert, coachmaker, and Anna his wife; his uncle was Richard Kilvert, domestic chaplain to Bishop Richard Hurd and rector of Hartlebury. Orphaned while still young, and the eldest of seven sons, he became guardian to his brothers. For a time he was educated under Dr. Michael Rowlandson at Hungerford. He then went to the Bath grammar school, where Nathaniel Morgan had him as an assistant. He matriculated at Worcester College, Oxford, on 6 November 1811, and graduated B.A. in 1819 and M.A. in 1824. Kilvert was ordained deacon by Richard Beadon, bishop of Bath and Wells, in 1816, and priest in 1817; his first curacy was at Claverton, near Bath. He declined the post of principal of Queen's College, Birmingham, stayed in Bath, and took on minor posts, including minister of St. Mary Magdalen's Chapel, chaplain of the General Hospital, and evening lecturer at St. Mary's, Bathwick. His main income came from keeping pupils. In 1837 Kilvert bought Claverton Lodge, on the southern slope of Bathwick Hill, where he took scholars for the rest of his life. Kilvert was one of the earlies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Manchester & Liverpool: [British Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints], May, 1840 - December, 1853. Vol. 1-15. Octavos [20 - 22 cm] Various period bindings in leather and cloth. Most volumes very good or better. Item #2011 First 15 volumes of the important British Mission periodical complete with 'Awful Assassination' and the supplement to Volume 15 announcing the practice of polygamy "The Millennial Star is the longest running LDS periodical, published continuously for 130 years until it was discontinued in 1970 with the overhaul of all of the LDS magazines. Inaugurated by the Twelve at the beginning of their great mission to England, its first editor was Parley Pratt who labored alone on the magazine until June 1842 when he was joined by a British convert Thomas Ward. Ward became editor and publisher in November 1842, serving until October 1846 when he was replaced by Orson Hyde, president of the British Mission. Thereafter, the British Mission president assumed the editorship of the Star. Initially the Star was a monthly. With the issue of June 15, 1845 (vol. 6, no. 1), it was changed to a semimonthly and continued as such until April 24, 1852 (vol. 14 no. 9) when it was issued weekly. It remained a weekly until, 1943, when it was changed back to a monthly. Even though the Star was published primarily for the members of the Church in England, it is an important record of the progress of the whole of Mormonism, especially of the nineteenth century Utah church. HEATH, William.
London: Lewis & Johnson, c.1840. Aquatint with fine hand colour. Sheet 490 x 585mm. Trimmed just within plate, mount burn around image. A lively scene of a military review held in the north-east corner of Hyde Park as part of the celebration of Queen Victoria's coronation two weeks earlier, the 28th of June. Cavalry gallop around the outside of the field while infantry demonstrate a defensive square and artillery pieces fire blanks, both generating clouds of smoke. On the right is Victoria's coach surrounded by dignitaries, with the houses of Park Lane behind, their roofs lined with spectators. A rare print: the only example we could trace is in the British Museum, published by J. Salisbury. The publication, the only one by Salisbury in the BM, could not have been a success as the plate was soon in the hands of Lewis and Johnson. Primarily publishers of music sheets, they purchased and reissued a few plates in the 1840s. The artist, William Heath (1794-1840), is famous for the political satires he published under the pseudonym 'Paul Pry'. BM: 1902,1011.8832.
