TILL, Franz, "Baumeister."
[Münich: ca. 1840]. A most handsomely illustrated manual on building techniques and materials. The author, about whom we know nothing, describes brick-making, masonry, and carpentry techniques. He also discusses the materials used in building such as stone, timber, bricks, etc. Perhaps the most fascinating section is his account of the construction of a bomb-proof bunker ("Über die Herstellung Bombenfreyer Räume"). The large and beautifully executed plates (305 x 420 mm.), on thick paper, depict brickwork, vaulted structures, arches, wooden joints, three roof constructions, etc. The book served as a textbook for engineering students, with a manuscript ownership note of the Bavarian engineering student, officer, and landowner Alexander Guiot du Ponteil (1824-79), with his purchase note on front paste-down. With the contemporary ownership inscription of "Johann Huschke, Ober-sapper." Fine condition.

(Anonymous)
Philadelphia: W. A. Leary, n.d. (ca. 1840). 8vo. 8pp printed on one side only, with large hand-colored woodcuts and the text in verse. Blue wrappers printed in black. The rear wrapper is captioned "New Colored Books" and lists 12 titles, but not this one. The publisher's address is given as No. 158 North Second Street, Philadelphia. Leary opened a bookstore at No. 138 in 1836. At some point he started publishing, both major books as well as children's illustrated books. This title is surprisingly similar to the Raine edition of about 1840; indeed the woodcuts are nearly identical, though the colors are different as is the textual layout. It is also quite similar to the London Marks edition of the 1820s. There is light staining throughout as well as general light soil and wear. Scarce. No copies found at auction nor on OCLC nor in the standard references. Very good.

Germany: Circa 1840. Thirty-two paintings of cakes and tortes presented together as a folding frieze which, when fully extended, measures almost three-and-a-half metres in length. Certain words in the hand-written descriptions are specific to Germany in the 1840s and suggest that the frieze was utilised as something akin to a baker's catalogue shown to customers who could then order specific items for particular occasions, or as a striking shopfront display for the window. In addition to the traditional chocolate cakes and apple and linzer tortes are more curiously named creations including a 'Brassilianer'. A folding frieze of 32 gouache paintings each with individual hand-written text, each panel measuring 138 mm x 105 mm, the complete frieze is 3500 mm in length, fresh and strong colour, a few marks but in excellent condition, housed in a modern brown linen case with decorative ribbon ties, paper label to front board.

Ackerman, L; Thomas Riley
1840. Sketch map of property in Tribeca, 5th Ward of New York, bordered by Franklin Street and West Broadway, one of the most exclusive residential neighborhoods in Manhattan, and showing "Thos. Riley's Hotel". Thomas Riley, an Irish immigrant to New York, recognized the potential for a high end hotel given the fine homes in the area, and opened the 5th Ward Hotel in 1826. Riley displayed curiosities and historical artifacts in the hotel's public room, and eventually the hotel became known as Riley's Fifth Ward Museum Hotel. A contemporary account of the Fifth Ward Museum states that the public room also included in its collection one of the Hawaiian clubs used to kill Captain James Cook: "Among its curiosities were a two-headed calf eloquently stuffed, the pig that butted a man off the bridge, one of the Hawaiian clubs that dashed out the brains of Captain Cook, Tecumseh's rifle, a pipe that General Jackson had smoked, and a large number of genuine relics of the colonial days of New York." ('A Tour Around New York And My Summer Acre, Being The Recreations Of Mr Felix Oldboy'. Mines, John Flavel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1893, p 18).Riley even rescued a statue of William Pitt which had been defaced by British soldiers at the end of the Revolutionary War and placed it on the Franklin Street hotel facade. Ackerman owned 5 lots; this sketch map was evidently done for him as his property is shaded in, with pencil. Other land owners listed as Smith Harriott, Mrs. Galagher & the Church. Some pencil annotations of length and breadth. Docketed on the reverse. On paper 6 1/2 x 7 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DENMAN] ANONYMOUS.
circa 1840. Original lithograph, 195 x 166mm., mounted. Portrait of Thomas Denman, Lord Chief Justice and politician, in his judicial robes. Denman played an active role in reforming English laws so as to secure individual liberties. In 1837 he carried two bills abolishing the death penalty for forgery and other crimes, and in 1839 he supported the Custody of Infants Bill which would give wives, separated from their husbands, access to their children. Denman's life-long work in aid of the abolition of the slave trade stands as evidence of his ongoing commitment to issues of social justice.

[Hardcover / fest gebunden]. Kiener, L. C.
Paris, Rousseau, and J. B. Baillière, 1840-1841. 4to (32.0 x 25.0 cm). Title page and half title, 146 pp., 58 finely hand-coloured engraved plates [34 pp., 15 plates (pyrule); 19 pp., 13 plates (fasciolaire); 50 pp., 21 plates (turbinelle); 43 pp., 9 plates (cancellaire)]. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Spines with gilt title. Marbled endpapers.l A very rare large-paper edition of this beautifully executed work of great scientific (taxonomical and nomenclatural) importance containing the descriptions and illustrations of many new and poorly-known shells. The larger quarto edition is more suitable to the fine illustrations by Duménil, Roch, Vaillant, Kiener himself, and others, as this work was meant to be of both scientific and aesthetic value. Nissen only mentions the 8vo edition, but on original wrappers from Kiener's time the work was stated to be available in "Grand in-8°, papier grand-raisin.figures coloriées. 6 fr.", AND "Grand in-4°, papier vélin satiné, figures coloriées 12 [fr]", i.e. twice as expensive. Louis Charles Kiener (1799-1881) made use of the famous Delessert collection and that of the Natural History Museum of Paris, the largest and most varied repositories of conchological material on the continent. "He soon put it to good use; and in 1834 he published the first part of his ‘Spécies’. This exquisitely illustrated iconography, started before the Sowerbys and Reeve began to issue theirs, appeared at intervals up to 1880, when eleven volumes had been completed" (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting). This volume covers several groups with gen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Orbigny, A. D. d'
Paris, P. Bertrand; Strasbourg, V. Levrault, 1840-[1847]. Folio (33.7 x 25.0 cm). With 79 (of 86) lithographed and mostly hand-coloured plates. In a recent portfolio with paper boards and title on the spine. A complete set of the scientific results of Alcide d'Orbigny's seven years of travel and exploration in South America is a true rarity; even the individual parts are all very rare because the production of this work, which started two years after his return in 1835, took 15 years to complete. This is the near-complete atlas of the "Mollusques", with plates 1-76, 79-80, lacking only a few plates at the end, viz., 77-78, and 81-85. The final plates are often lacking. Most plates are in very good condition, and extremely well coloured. The numbering of plate 38 corrected to 36; the two different plates 41 corrected to 41a, and 41b (recte 41, 41bis). One plate with small paper loss in the margin. A very good, clean set of plates of this fabulous work. Nissen ZBI, 3021. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
