Vidocq, Francois Eugene
London: I. J. Chidley, 123, Aldersgate Street, n.d. [1840s].. 12mo, pp. [i-iii] iv-vi [i] ii-xii [1] 2-562, engraved title leaf and eight inserted plates with illustrations by Thomas Onwhyn, original pictorial red cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed, yellow coated endpapers. First complete one-volume edition? No holdings for this edition can be found in any of the libraries of COPAC, leaving some uncertainty about its exact bibliographic status. What is known and what seems likely are as follows: the first English translation of this work was issued in four volumes by Hunt and Clarke in 1828-1829. (Oxford also records another edition in 4 volumes in 1829 from Whittaker, Treacher and Arnet.) A one-volume edition appeared in 1859 in the Bohn Library and also from T. B. Peterson in the U.S., the latter running to 562 pages, the same page count as the present edition and, one may reasonably suspect, of the Bohn Library edition as well. That would place this Chidley edition somewhere between 1829 and 1859 (confirmed by a gift inscription dated July 1847 on the front free endpaper). Chidley brought out an earlier undated edition (circa 1840) titled THE LIFE AND EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF VIDOCQ. This edition consisted of only 206 pages and, therefore, may have been the first of a projected multi-volume edition. What seems likely is that this is the first complete one-volume edition of VIDOCQ -- an important probable influence on Poe's creation of Dupin. See Queen's Quorum, pp. 8-9. Queen, The Detective Short Story, pp. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lanner, Joseph
Vienna: Tobias Haslinger, 1840. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Good/No Jacket. Regarded by many as being the inventor of the Viennese Waltz, he lived 42 years beginning in Vienna as a violin player in the Michael Pamer orchestra. In 1818, he left to form a trio which five years later became a quartet with the addition of a young viola player - Johann Strauss the Elder. The ensemble quickly expanded into a full-grown orchestra. In 1825, Lanner and Strauss went their own separate ways. Although they still remained friends, they were serious rivals in dance music. Lanner became music director at the Redoutensäle in 1829 and two years later he was appointed bandmaster of the Second Vienna Militia Regiment. His musical output totalled over 200 works - here are two in their original musical sheet music format with various stamps, from his later period, sold as a lot. 11pps each, oblong, usual foxing and soiling, sold loose. German romantic composer Franz Albert Kulling signed name on bottom right, German text, scarce.

Giovanni Battista Niccolini (San Giuliano Terme, 29 ottobre 1782 ? Firenze, 20 settembre 1861) è stato un drammaturgo italiano. Visse a Firenze, Lucca e Prato, e fu socio dell'Accademia della Crusca. Probably rebound circa 1900 when all plates have been protected with "Excelsior Superfine" watermarked paper as tissue guards. A very nice handsome set of early American views. Although little is known about Bartlett's itinerary in North America, a map in American scenery suggests that his travels during 1836-37 began in New York City and took him north to the White Mountains, N.H., west to Niagara Falls, N.Y., and south to Washington, D.C. The detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis. Beautifully illustrated with 121 engravings including an engraving on each title page, includes a map of the northeastern United States. Benedetto MARZOLLA
Napoli, 1840.

Tagli a spruzzo azzurri. Testo entro doppio filetto.

XX.
