MEMOIRS OF VIDOCQ, AS A CONVICT, SPY, AND AGENT OF THE FRENCH POLICE

London: I. J. Chidley, 123, Aldersgate Street, n.d. [1840s].. 12mo, pp. [i-iii] iv-vi [i] ii-xii [1] 2-562, engraved title leaf and eight inserted plates with illustrations by Thomas Onwhyn, original pictorial red cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed, yellow coated endpapers. First complete one-volume edition? No holdings for this edition can be found in any of the libraries of COPAC, leaving some uncertainty about its exact bibliographic status. What is known and what seems likely are as follows: the first English translation of this work was issued in four volumes by Hunt and Clarke in 1828-1829. (Oxford also records another edition in 4 volumes in 1829 from Whittaker, Treacher and Arnet.) A one-volume edition appeared in 1859 in the Bohn Library and also from T. B. Peterson in the U.S., the latter running to 562 pages, the same page count as the present edition and, one may reasonably suspect, of the Bohn Library edition as well. That would place this Chidley edition somewhere between 1829 and 1859 (confirmed by a gift inscription dated July 1847 on the front free endpaper). Chidley brought out an earlier undated edition (circa 1840) titled THE LIFE AND EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF VIDOCQ. This edition consisted of only 206 pages and, therefore, may have been the first of a projected multi-volume edition. What seems likely is that this is the first complete one-volume edition of VIDOCQ -- an important probable influence on Poe's creation of Dupin. See Queen's Quorum, pp. 8-9. Queen, The Detective Short Story, pp. 107-08. July 1847 gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Some foxing and age-darkening to plates, several hairline cracks along outer joints, but a very good copy with clean binding and bright spine stamping. A very uncommon edition of this book.         Report made to the Chamber of Deputies on the abolition of slavery in the French colonies by Alexis de Tocqueville, July 23, 1839. Translated from the French.

      J. Munroe and Co.,, Boston: 1840 - 8vo, original printed wrappers, cloth-folding box with leather title label, 54 pp. Wrappers chipped, a few pages uncut, front wrapper neatly re-attached; otherwise very good. Alexis de Tocqueville was a French sociologist and political theorist, his well-known travels to the United States in 1831 resulted in his well-known work on "Democracy in America" (1835). He was a well-known critic of slavery, and race prejudice, and it is not surprising he would be involved in this effort. Rather scarce American edition of Alexis de Tocqueville's report as "rapporteur" for a committee in the French Chamber of Deputies tasked to consider the abolition of slavery in the French colonies of Martinique, Guadaloupe, Bourbon and Guiana. Published in the same year as the original French edition. His proposal was for the abolition to take place over a transition period in which the State would act as arbitrator between the former masters and the new freedmen, assigning the blacks, who would be paid wages, to the colonists. As Tocqueville's biographer states, "A portion of the wages would revert to the State in partial amortization of the indemnities paid to the slaveholders at the time of the emancipation. By thus interposing the power of the State, Tocqueville hoped to prevent the bloody settling of accounts between the two races that had so struck him in the United States." His proposal did not reach the floor of the Chamber for debate, but slavery was abolished in the French colonies in 1848. His proposals did, inevitably, exert influence on the anti-slavery movement in the United States. history online website. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Autograph Letter signed ("MR Mitford") to Mrs. [John] Hughes, of Donnington Priory, Berkshire, thanking her and Mr. Hughes for their kindness to her father

Three Miles Cross [Berkshire, England] 1840 - 3pp. in ink, on single folded sheet. 1 vols. 12mo. Miss Mitford on Kindness to her Father. A hearfelt and touching letter to the mother of the author of TOM JONES SCHOOL DAYS, thanking her and Mr. Hughes for their kindness to her father. George Mitford was a profligate gambler whose habits had reduced his family to poverty. According to the DNB, the elder Mitford's many failings "never succeeded in alienating the affections of his wife and daughter." Her love for her father could hardly be better illustrated than in this touching letter to her friends, John and Margaret Hughes:"I cannot help writing to thank you & Mr. Hughes over & over again for your great goodness & kindness to my dear father. He has talked of little but Donnington and its inhabitants since his return - I have no words to tell you how strongly I feel your affection to him . At all times kindness to my father goes much more surely to my heart than kindness to myself -- but just now when I hear talk of alarm for his health it was an inexpressible comfort . " 3pp. in ink, on single folded sheet. 1 vols. 12mo

The detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis.         I PROMESSI SPOSI. Storia milanese del secolo XVII scoperta e rifatta da Alessandro Manzoni. Edizione riveduta dall'autore - Storia della Colonna Infame. Inedita.

Dalla Tipografia Guglielmini e Redaelli, 1840. Cm.25x17. Pg.864. Legatura coeva in piena tela rossa con titoli e decorazioni in oro al dorso. Bordura a filo oro ai piatti. Tagli in oro. Antiporta e frontespizio figurati. Testo incorniciato in bordura a doppio filo. > Parenti, "Rarità bibliografiche dell'Ottocento", I, 214-226, "[...] Edizione principe, che unisce all'intrinseco pregio, già altissimo, quello di essere una delle più belle, se non la più bella, edizione romantica italiana". Parenti, "Prime edizioni italiane", 331, "È la prima edizione del testo del romanzo riveduto e della Storia della Colonna Infame". Tellini, "Manzoni", 38, "Le vignette [...] sono tutte programmate da Manzoni, per quanto riguarda la scelta del tema da illustrare, il taglio, la sceneggiatura, la successione delle immagini".         James Fenimore Cooper announces his impending arrival to his publishers, so "that the printers may be in readiness, as I desire to return home by the 3d prox. in order to assist in making Martin Van Buren, President of the U. States of America."

New York, October 16, 1840. 8.25" x 9". "James Fenimore Cooper Autograph Letter Signed written aboard the U.S.S. Macedonia off the Battery [New York], October 16, 1840; one page, 8.25" x 9". The letter is gently toned, with bold ink and has been tipped into a slight larger sheet. Expected folds. Docketed at top left by the recipient. Accompanied by a fine engraving of Cooper, 4.5"" x 7.25"" laid into a page, along with documented provenance as noted below. Cooper is writing to his publishers, Lea and Blanchard of Philadelphia:""Gentlemen,I sail for New York to-morrow in this ship. We shall probably get in on Monday, and I hope to be in Philadelphia by the 20th, when I wish to finish printing Mercedes, without delay. I write that the printers may be in readiness, as I desire to return home by the 3d prox. In order to assist in making Martin Van Buren, President of the U. States of America.Yours in haste,J. Fenimore Cooper""Cooper, a prolific writer, had published his History of the Navy of the United States of America and a book on the USS Constitution the year before. A few months prior to writing the letter offered here, Cooper had published the final installment of his Leatherstockings series, featuring his most famous character Natty Bumppo, the central figure of The Last of the Mohicans. In Mercedes of Castile, the book referenced in this letter, Cooper tells the story of Christopher Columbus, marking his literary return to the sea, his first love.It is important to note that Cooper is writing from aboard the USS Macedonian, an active Navy frigate carrying 36 guns assigned to the West Indies squadron as a deterrent to Caribbean pirates. Cooper had served in the Navy and dedicated much of his life to recording its history. His work as a historian as well as his political connections would have given him access to use of naval frigate for his personal travel. The Macedonian was assigned to scouting the Caribbean seas and was likely on its way to another tour. Cooper is anxious to return to the campaign trail, as he notes in his letter. Despite his efforts to get President Van Buren re-elected, William Henry Harrison would prove victorious. Although letters by Cooper are not uncommon, those referencing his literary work in any way appear with far less frequency. The letter offered here is particularly desirable as it evidences his political interests. The last Cooper letter to appear at auction with literary content sold in excess of $7475 in 2013. Provenance: This item was recently discovered in an extra illustrated volume of "History of the City of New York" by Mary L. Booth, New York W. R. C. Clark, 1867. Originally two volumes, the monumental task of expanding the work to 21 volumes by none other than Emery E. Childs esquire of New York City. In volume 1 of this work exists a lovely india ink Drawing of Mary L. Booth along with a notation "presented by her to E E C" in pencil. Next to the title page we find an original letter of Booth to Childs dated April 4, 1872 " I am in receipt of your favor of the 4th inst., and am grateful to hear that you are taking the trouble to illustrate my History of the City of New York in the manner you describe. I shall be happy to see you, should you favor me with a callas I am usually in my office during business hours and should be pleased to facilitate your Enterprise by any means in my power"It is assumed that the book took several years to assemble at which point, assumedly through Childs, it made its way to Senator Charles B. Farwell of Chicago who took the seat of John A. Logan in 1887. Farwell had an extensive library that fortunately survived the great Chicago fire in 1871 having been housed in his Lakeside home. In the American Bibliopolist of November 1871 there is an article about the devastation to libraries caused by the tragedy . "Mr C. B. Farwell's library is also fortunately far out from the city, at his country house, and is safe, The same remark will also apply to the extensive collection of books and curiosities belonging to Mr. E. E. Childs." This establishes the Chicago connection between Childs and Farwell. That these letters were preserved for over 140 years and have never been on the market for that period is remarkable on many levels. It is the state of being wedged in these volumes that also account for what is mostly the pristine state of preservation."
