Payne's Royal Dresden Gallery Being a Selection of Subjects Engraved after Pictures by the Great Masters . . . Two volumes

Leipzig, Germany.: Leipzig and W. French of London.. Very Good. Hardcover. 4to - 27.5 x 21.5 cm.; Volume I: 164 numbered pages of text with 64 steel engraved plates. Volume II: 187 numbered pages of text with 72 steel engraved plates. The title continues (after the list of the Great Masters) as: ". . . with Accompanying Notices Consisting of Tales, Biographies etc". No date of publication is given though it is in the mid to late 1840's with a one volume American edition (Appleton) produced in the early 1860's. Both volumes are half bound with a marbled paper on the boards and a dark green leather on the spines and fore corners. Six panels are present on the spines with gilt lettering in the second and third panels from the top and gilt decorations at the spine head and tail panels with a dentilled gilding on the bands. The gilding on the bands is dulled and rubbed in contrast to the rest of the spine gilding which is bright. All tissue protectors are present with the exception of the one for the "Dresden" plate facing page 4 of Volume One; it is missing. The tissue protectors for "The Madonna of St. Sixtus" plate facing page 126 of Volume One is missing a small piece of the front fore corner and the tissue protector for "The Hermit" plate facing page 100 of Volume Two has an internal tear at the top. In Volume One, an erratum should be noted that the plate "Dutch Boors" is listed as facing page 44 in the contents but actually is facing page 19. Foxing is present though restricted to the page margins with some (~10 to 15) plates showing some foxing on the blank sides though it does tend to be milder and less pronounced in these instances. The text block head edge of both volumes is gilt and retains much of the original sheen. The board edges are rubbed with loss of the marbled paper on the tail edges and the leather corners are bumped with wear and rubbing. The spine tips are similar though more so on the tail. The tail edge of the front board of Volume One is bumped in the middle. The binding is very supple with solid hinges and text block. Both volumes present well. A handsome and desirable set. Digital images of any aspect are available upon request. .

Well regarded as a founder of the academic study of American history, later President of Harvard, Jared Sparks rescued much of the papers of key American leaders of the American Revolution. Bookplates of George Brinley and J Hammond Trumbull on pastedown of volume I. George Brinley, of Hartford, was a leading collector of American history, and the five auctions of his library 1878-1880 were landmark events. J Hammond Trumbull, state librarian of Connecticut, one of the founders and a President of the American Philological Association, and thirty years President of the Connecticut Historical Society, was given rights in Brinley's will to purchase a given value of books at the auctions without payment.         The Pictorial Flora; or, British Botany Delineated, in 1500 lithopgraphic drawings of all the species of flowering plants indigenous to Great Britain, illustrating the descriptive works on English botany by Sir J.E. Smith, Lindley, Hooker, Withering, and other authors. By Miss Jackson

Longman Orme Brown Green and Longmans London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1840 First edition. Contemporary green vellum, gilt burgundy spine label, metal clasp and catch. . Octavo. iv, 42 pp. plus 131 lithographed plates, mostly with twelve figures to a page. Also with an appendix, including about 300 extra figures. Binding has a few light spots, light foxing throughout. Still, a very good copy. This exhaustive work was designed to be portable and inexpensive enough to be within the means of young people. Little is known of the author, who was from Litchfield, though Desmond's Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturists states that she was probably the daughter of John Jackson (fl. 1740s-1790s), who with Erasmus Darwin and Sir Brooke Boothby formed the Botanical Society at Lichfield. She is also likely related to Maria Elizabetha Jackson (1755-1829), friend of Maria Edgeworth and author of Botanical Lectures (1804), Sketches of the Physiology of Vegetable Life (1811), and The Florist's Manual (1822), who is often erroneously cited as the author of this work.

Vue De New York. Prise de Weahawk, A View of New-York, taken from Veahawk./ Garneray pinx.t/ Himely sulp/ A Paris chez Hocquart Succr. de Basset rue St. Jacques No. 64./ Depose'

New York, 1840. No Binding. Very Good. 14 ½ x 17 5/8 inches. Aquatint with fine hand color; excellent condition. Rare. An exquisite aquatint view of New York City and Harbor as seen from Weehawken, New Jersey, a popular vantage point for early views of the city. In the foreground are picnickers in a sylvan setting on the heights overlooking a ship-filled harbor and busy port city. The view evokes the majestic sweep New York's spacious, double-bayed harbor, and the subtle shading effects of the aquatint process are can be seen in rendering of cloud formations, in the delicacy of the large tree in the foreground, and in the play of light on the water. In the view the steeples of churches still dominate the skyline of the city. The appearance of the dome on the Merchants' Exchange seen in the southern extreme of the city, however, helps date the depiction. It was completed in 1827 but destroyed by fire in December 1835. Further, there is no trace on the view of the tower of the Presbyterian Church on Wall Street, which was destroyed by fire in September 1834 but rebuilt in 1835.Stokes, I.N.P. Iconography, III, p. 614, pl. 110; Deak, G.G. Picturing America, no. 433; Stokes & Haskell American Historical Prints, c.1834-E-38, pp. 78-79.

On the Minute Structure and Movements of Voluntary Muscle, WITH: Additional Note on the Contraction of Voluntary Muscle in the Living Body.

First Editions, extracted from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, respectively vol.130 for 1840, pp., 457-501 and vol.131 for 1841, pp. 69-72, complete with a total of 5 lithographic plates, with general title-page to vol 130, (this and plates with small and neat embossed unlinked library name), disbound, large quarto, very good copy, London, [The Royal Society], 1840, 1841. * "Classical description of the striated muscle" (GARRISON MORTON, 542). "Bowman's classic description of the anatomy and contracility of striated muscle fibrils was hardly improved upon until the advent of the electron microscope. He was the first to give a complete description of the fascicular tunic, which he named sarcolemma." Haskell Norman Library. The first part of William Bowman's professional career (up to 1842) concentrated on histological studies which resulted in the publication of 'Physiological anatomy and physiology of man' (1843-1856) published with Robert Bentley Todd (1809-1860). This work was an important landmark and displayed Bowman's accurate eye and descriptive pen, and artistic pencil which produced masterly accounts of histology. New and detailed descriptions were made of skin, muscle, nerves, sense organs, kidney, bone, and cartilage. On 18 June 1840 the paper "On the minute structure and movement of voluntary muscle" was communicated to the Royal Society by Todd. It resulted in Bowman's election to fellowship at the age of twenty-five. Striated muscle fine structure began to be really understood following a comprehensive survey of the matter carried out by William Bowman in the late 1830s. The publications resulting from such a study, the first of which earned for the author a precocious election as Fellow of the Royal Society. DSB, II, pp. 375-376; Fulton, History of physiology, pp. 226-228; Garrison and Morton 542; Haskell Norman Library 294.

On the construction of life-tables, illustrated by a new life-table

1840. Farr, William (1807-83). On the construction of life-tables, illustrated by a new life-table of the healthy districts of England. In Philosophical Transactions 149, pt. 2 (1859): 837-78. Folding table and tables in text, including one typeset by the Scheutz calculator. Original printed wrappers. Whole number. [16], 493-931 [1], 16pp., 16 plates. 300 x 230 mm. (uncut and unopened). FIne. First edition. Farr's preliminary report, describing the use of the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to prepare life tables, was published five years before his English Life Table. Farr, a pioneer in the quantitative study of morbidity and mortality, was chief statistician of the General Register Office, England's central statistical office. Influenced by Babbage, he had long been interested in the use of a calculating machine such as Babbage's Difference Engine to compute life tables; see page 854 of the present report, in which Farr refers to his 1843 letter on this subject to the registrar-general. Farr had seen and tested the machine's predecessor, the Scheutz Engine no. 2, when it was on display in London. It was at Farr's recommendation that the British government authorized in 1857 the sum of £1200 for the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to be constructed by the firm of Bryan Donkin, a manufacturer of machines for the color printing of bank notes and stamps. Costs overran and Donkin delivered the machine in July 1859, several weeks past the deadline, at a loss of £615 (Lindgren 1987, 224-25). Thus, it is one of the ironies of history that the British government funded the construction of a difference engine designed in Sweden based on Babbage's principles long after it had refused funding to complete construction of Babbage's Difference Engine no. 1.Farr's preliminary report, received by the Royal Society on March 17 of that year, was written while the Scheutz Engine no. 3 was still "in the course of construction by the Messrs. Donkin" (p. 854). The report's table B1, "Life-Table of Healthy English Districts," made from stereotype plates produced by the calculator, represents the very first application of a difference engine to medical statistics. The Scheutz Engine no. 2, which the Scheutzes had brought with them from Sweden to England, was purchased in 1857 by the Dudley Observatory in Albany, New York. The following year the observatory used the machine in the computation of tables for the planet Mars; however, these were experimental and probably never printed on paper (Lindgren 1978, 211). The Scheutzes, Farr, and the Dudley Observatory were the first to use the Scheutz calculator in a scientific context. Origins of Cyberspace 77.

        A HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH, "ROSES MOUSSEUSES, ROSE JAUNE-SONFRE

Francois Delarue Paris: François Delarue, 1840. 546 x 413 mm (21 1/2 x 16 1/4"). Attractively matted. A LOVELY HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH OF PINK AND YELLOW ROSES BY GROBON FRÃ?RES AFTER REDOUTÃ?, the image with arched top, done on a thick piece of creamy-white stock, the flowers against a light gray background.A number of tiny, faint freckles of foxing to background, otherwise clean and bright, with strong, pleasing colors. This very charming work is based on the famous rose illustrations by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), the Belgian painter and botanist known as the "Raphael of flowers." His talent was such that he weathered the turbulent political times and served as court painter both to Marie Antoinette and to Napoleon's empress, Josephine, for whom he immortalized the blossoms in her famous garden at Malmaison. The lithographers, François Frédéric Grobon (1815-1901/1902) and Anthelme Eugène Grobon (1820-78), were brothers trained in Lyon who produced several collections of botanical prints as well as a book of instruction, "Méthode Grobon frères, études progressives de Fleurs et de Fruits, depuis les premiers éléments jusqu' à la compostion des groupes" (1850), for aspiring artists. The delicate delineation and careful coloring give the roses here an extremely realistic, almost three-dimensional, quality--one is sure the drop of dew on the leaf will fall on one's hand. This print may have been part of the Redouté "Collection de Beaux Bouquets Lithographies" published by Delarue ca. 1845 and listed in "Great Flower Books" on page 131.

PMM 293 Anm.; Poggendorff I, 1482; Engel/Stäckel, Urkunden zur Geschichte der nichteuklidischen Geometrie I, 448, 13; DSB VIII, 432 f.

'Kakabrka' or Grand Falls on the Kamuntiqua river, Lake Superior, N.America

[no date but circa 1840?]. Watercolour view of Kakabeka Falls (Ontario) over pencil, on Whatman Turkey Mill wove paper, inscribed in pencil beneath the image. Excellent condition. Image size: 11 x 15 1/2 inches. 20 1/4 x 25 1/4 inches. A fine original watercolour of the spectacular scenery bordering Lake Superior This is a very fine early watercolour of a great natural wonder, likely painted by one of the several traveling English artists who captured the natural majesty of the Canadian wilderness in the early to mid-nineteenth-century. Exceptionally, it survives in pristine condition, its virtuous use of colour capturing a scene that is at the same time rugged, yet sublime. Here, Kakabeka Falls is captured from an oblique angle from a southeast vantage point. Kakabeka Falls, at a height of 132 ft. is the tallest waterfall in the Lake Superior region, located just west of the modern city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. It marks the place where the Kaministiquia River cascades over the edge of the Canadian Shield. Its name derives from the Ojibway word 'Gakaabikaa", appropriately meaning "waterfall over a cliff". From the late seventeenth-century, French couriers du bois, who had established a nearby fort, used the Kaministiquia as their primary route to into the heart of North America, necessitating a portage around the falls. This same route experienced renewed popularity with the establishment of the Northwest Company's base at Fort William in 1803. In the nineteenth- century Kakabeka Falls became a favourite subject of traveling artists. Around 1825 George Back painted a watercolor painting of the falls from almost the identical vantage point as the present watercolour, and Frances Anne Hopkins painting The Red River Expedition at Kakabeka Falls (1877) is one of her most important works. Probably the most popular image of the falls is by Lucius O'Brien, an 1882 painting now in the National Gallery of Canada.

On the Heat Evolved by Metallic Conductors of Electricity and in the Cells of a Battery During Electrolysis

Richard and John E. Taylor London: Richard and John E. Taylor. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the derivation of Joule's Law, one of the fundamental laws of electricity. Joule, "in the paper now under consideration, was the first to announce the definite law that 'when a current of voltaic electricity is propagated along a metallic conductor, the heat evolved in a given time is proportional to the resistance of the conductor multiplied by the square of the electric intensity,' i.e. electric current. In the same paper he showed that the law applies, when proper allowance is made for certain disturbances, to heat produced in electrolytes. The paper also contained the first reference to a 'standard of resistance;' this consisted of a coil of ten feet of copper wire .024 inch in thickness."These experiments contained the germs of Joule's second great discovery, the equivalence of heat and energy, which he fully developed later. But he had already made it clear that the energy set free in the battery is also proportional to the resistance of the circuit and to the square of the current" (Dictionary of National Biography).NOTE: Joule had originally announced his experimental results in a speech before the Royal Society on December, 17,1840, but the Royal Society did not deem the paper worthy to be printed in their respected Philosophical Transactions; an abstract, instead, was printed in their Proceedings of the Royal Society. In: The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, vol. XIX, no.124, pp.260-277. London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1841. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter calf, marbled boards. Occasional light foxing, some rubbing to boards.       Utgifna efter hans död. I-II. Uppsala, Leffler & Sebell, 1840-42. 8:o. (6),417 + (6),LXIV,(2),246 s. Två marmorerade pappbd med sparsamt guldornerade ryggar, röda titeletiketter av skinn och guldpräglade delnummer (Johanna Röjgård). De tryckta främre omslagen medbundna. Sporadiska lagerfläckar. Smala mörka fläckar i hörnen i början av del I och i slutet av del II. I del I fuktränder i nedre marginalen från s. 369 till slutet. Enstaka marginalnoteringar i blyerts.

On the Critical Values of the Sums of Periodic SeriesCambridge: John W. Parker, 1847. First edition.

An offprint of the paper in which he inaugurated the fundamental notion of 'uniform convergence'. "An understanding that the convergence of a series of functions needs to be carefully handled developed only in the late 1840's, simultaneously but independently in the work of Phillip Seidel, a former pupil of Dirichlet, and George Stokes in Cambridge. Both realized that for an infinite sum of continuous functions to be continuous, convergence must be of a particular kind, which Seidel (in 1848) described as not 'arbitrarily slow' and Stokes (in late 1847) as not 'infinitely slow'. Such ideas foreshadowed the later idea of uniform convergence, where a series of functions not only converges at every point, but does so at a uniform rate over a range of values. Stokes' paper of 1847 was entitled 'On the critical values of the sums of periodic series'. His discussion of continuity in §1 shows that even by 1847 the Eulerian definition of a continuous function as one that can be expressed by a single formula had not entirely fallen out of use, but Stokes himself adopted the Bolzano-Cauchy definition: 'f(x) is called continuous when, for all values of x, the difference between f(x) and f(x&plusminus;h) can be made smaller than any assignable quantity by sufficiently diminishing h'. In the same opening section, Stokes separated convergent series into two classes, either 'essentially' or 'accidentally' convergent; in modern terms absolutely or conditionally convergent. His definition of 'infinitely slow' convergence came only much later in the paper, in §38. ... The modern definition of uniform convergence was formulated a few years after the appearance of Stokes' paper, by Weierstrass in Berlin." (Stedall: Mathematics Emerging, A Source Book 1540-1900, pp. 527-528).. Large 4to: 286 x 226 mm. Offprint from the Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, Vol. VIII, Part V, 1847.
