        On the construction of life-tables, illustrated by a new life-table. . .

1840 - Farr, William (1807-83). On the construction of life-tables, illustrated by a new life-table of the healthy districts of England. In Philosophical Transactions 149, pt. 2 (1859): 837-78. Folding table and tables in text, including one typeset by the Scheutz calculator. Original printed wrappers. Whole number. [16], 493-931 [1], 16pp., 16 plates. 300 x 230 mm. (uncut and unopened). FIne. First edition. Farr's preliminary report, describing the use of the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to prepare life tables, was published five years before his English Life Table. Farr, a pioneer in the quantitative study of morbidity and mortality, was chief statistician of the General Register Office, England's central statistical office. Influenced by Babbage, he had long been interested in the use of a calculating machine such as Babbage's Difference Engine to compute life tables; see page 854 of the present report, in which Farr refers to his 1843 letter on this subject to the registrar-general. Farr had seen and tested the machine's predecessor, the Scheutz Engine no. 2, when it was on display in London. It was at Farr's recommendation that the British government authorized in 1857 the sum of £1200 for the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to be constructed by the firm of Bryan Donkin, a manufacturer of machines for the color printing of bank notes and stamps. Costs overran and Donkin delivered the machine in July 1859, several weeks past the deadline, at a loss of £615 (Lindgren 1987, 224-25). Thus, it is one of the ironies of history that the British government funded the construction of a difference engine designed in Sweden based on Babbage's principles long after it had refused funding to complete construction of Babbage's Difference Engine no. 1.Farr's preliminary report, received by the Royal Society on March 17 of that year, was written while the Scheutz Engine no. 3 was still "in the course of construction by the Messrs. Donkin" (p. 854). The report's table B1, "Life-Table of Healthy English Districts," made from stereotype plates produced by the calculator, represents the very first application of a difference engine to medical statistics. The Scheutz Engine no. 2, which the Scheutzes had brought with them from Sweden to England, was purchased in 1857 by the Dudley Observatory in Albany, New York. The following year the observatory used the machine in the computation of tables for the planet Mars; however, these were experimental and probably never printed on paper (Lindgren 1978, 211). The Scheutzes, Farr, and the Dudley Observatory were the first to use the Scheutz calculator in a scientific context. Origins of Cyberspace 77. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Master Humphrey's Clock

London: Chapman & Hall, 1840 - 1841 London: Chapman & Hall, 1840 - 1841 Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne and Cattermole. First edition, first printing, with all of the definitive first issue points called for by Smith. Three volumes. Publisher's brown ribbed cloth, with decorative floral borders in blind to the boards, spines elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, clock illustrations in gilt to the front boards with the clock hands pointing to the volume number, plain variant endpapers, with black and white wood block prints designed by Browne (figure pieces) and Cattermole (architecture), including a unique frontispiece for each volume. Near fine, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, hint of fraying to the spine ends, spines lightly toned, a few light scuffs to the otherwise clean boards, bright gilt, sturdy spines, light spotting to the endpapers, a few faint hints of scattered spotting to the otherwise clean pages, Earl of Potsmouth's bookplates to the front pastedowns, ownership stamps and inscriptions to the front free endpapers; volume I with a faint stain to the rear board and lacking the dedication page. A lovely set, free of any repairs or restoration. Smith I 6. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 161-182. Both Smith and Hatton & Cleaver cite the same succession of endpaper variants: the earliest issues contain yellow endpapers with trimmed edges, while the majority of first editions have Spanish marbled endpapers with all edges marbled. Some first editions have also been noted with variant pale yellow endpapers or plain endpapers. Additionally, Smith notes copies with "mixed endpapers" as well as copies in which "the marbled endpapers found in volume one…differed from those in volumes two and three." This copy of Master Humphrey's Clock has all of the definitive textual first issue points called for by Dickens references; the only points that differ slightly are the punctuation marks on page 220 of Vol. I, page 113 of Vol. II, and page 27 of Vol. III, which Smith says "may" be missing as a result of the battering or wear of a printing block that occurred during the printing of the first issue (they are present in these volumes). Of the 55+ textual misprints that comprise the first issue points, 10 points are similarly non-definitive and should, therefore, not be the sole indicator of a later issue; this set includes three-fifths of the non-definitive points as well as all of the definitive issue points, indicating a true first issue despite any minor deviances (endpapers or otherwise) from Dickens references. Originally published serially in 88 weekly numbers and in 20 monthly parts from April 4, 1840 - November 27, 1841, Master Humphrey's Clock tells the story of the lonely Master Humphrey, who houses his collection of manuscripts in a long clock, and starts a club where members read their manuscripts aloud to one another.. Illus. by Browne, Hablot Knight. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
