Speech of Sir William Molesworth, Bart. On Transportation

      H. Hooper, London 1840 - Slim octavo, 76 pp., title-page a little worn; very good in modern red half morocco, from the Webster collection with his small stamp on the rear endpaper, bound without final blank noted by Ferguson. Mutiny, corruption and violence in Australian prisons. An important early speech to the House of Commons by the British MP and parliamentary reformer Sir William Molesworth, summarising and presenting his work on the Select Committee on Transportation to Parliament for the first time. Molesworth (1810-1855) had chaired the Select Committee on Transportation, which had published its important report only two years earlier in 1838. The report had particularly focussed on the growing discontent from free settlers in Australia, as well as investigating Norfolk Island and Port Arthur, and here the report's author presents a succinct overview of his findings.

Souvenirs d'un Aveugle. Voyage autour du monde? Chasses. Drame

H.-L. Delloye, Paris 1840 - Large octavo, 15 plates, untrimmed with an early library stamp on the title-page; a handsome copy in polished half calf, spine banded and gilt. The rare supplementary volume. Fine copy of this unusual addition to his voyage account by the prolific and eccentric Arago, which includes vivid descriptions of the natural history of Australia. The fifteen dramatic plates are all after Arago's own drawings, and include an image of an Australian Aborigine confronted with a rearing Black Snake. A rather good note in the Hill catalogue confirms that this is an unofficial supplement to the 1839 Hortet et Ozanne edition of Arago's Souvenirs d'un aveugle, a richly illustrated account that is "much prized". This is a popular account of hunting from around the world, with each of the sections devoted to a different animal. Two sections are devoted to animals of Australia, the Black Snake (pp. 152-165) and the Kangaroo (pp. 367-379). If anything, Arago's tale of the Black Snake is the more arresting, telling the story of an Aboriginal man bartering with a plantation owner before coming face to face with the snake among the eucalypts. The lengthy description of Sydney and its environs is based, of course, on his own visit when he completed the circumnavigation in the Uranie under the command of Louis de Freycinet. By the time this version of his book reached the public, the remarkable Arago had lost his sight: hence the new title which he reused for several different works, the Souvenirs d'un aveugle. With the bookplate of the Comte Polydor de la Rochefoucauld. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Poetical Works of Ebenezer Elliott, The Corn-Law Rhymer

nbsp;Edinburgh - William Tait, 1840. nbsp;Edinburgh - William Tait, 1840 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The Poetical Worksby Ebenezer Elliott (1781 - 1849) who was an English poet, known as the Corn Law rhymer this editionincludes his Corn-Law Rhymes. In 1798, aged seventeen, he wrote his first poem Vernal Walk in imitation of James Thompson. He was also influenced by Byron and the Romantic poets and Robert Southey who later became Poet Laureate. In 1808 Elliott wrote to Southey asking for advice on getting published. Elliott was delighted when Southey replied. Their correspondence over the years encouraged him and reinforced his determination to make a name for himself as a poet. Although they only met once, they exchanged letters until 1824, and Elliott declared that it was Southey who had taught him the art of poetry. He knew what it was like to be impoverished and desperate and, as a result, he always identified with the poor. The strength of his political convictions was reflected in the style and tenor of his verse, earning him the nickname the Corn Law Rhymer, and making him internationally famous. The Corn Law Rhymes, first published in 1831, were inspired by a fierce hatred of injustice, and are vigorous, simple and full of vivid description. The poems campaigned against the landowners in the government who stifled competition and kept the price of bread high. They were aggressive and sarcastic, attacking the status quo and demanding the repeal of the Corn Laws. They also drew attention to the dreadful conditions endured by working people, and ruthlessly contrasted their lot with the sleek and complacent gentry. Condition: In a half calf binding. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities and rubbing to boards. Withloss to head ofbackstrip and slight marginal fading and loss to paper to rear board. Hinges tender. Internally, firmly bound. Bright with only the odd handling mark throughout but with some foxing to endpapers. Overall: GOOD.

A brief account of the First Concordium, or Harmonious Industrial College, a home for the affectionate, skilful, and industrious, uncontaminated by false sympathy, avaricious cunning, or excessive labour.

Ham Common Surrey Published at the Concordium price one penny and sold by all booksellers n.d. ? 1840 - 8vo., caption title, 8pp., rather foxed and browned, well bound in old style quarter calf gilt. A good, most attractively bound, copy. First edition: variant issue. Rare. Goldsmiths 33490. Menger p.238. Harrison p.297. Not in Kress, Williams, Black or Stammhammer. OCLC + COPAC find copies at 5 libraries in British Isles in addition to an issue of 14pp. at Yale. James Pierrepont Greaves (1777-1842) and the Concordium at Ham Common in Surrey played a significant role in the development of utopian socialism in England in the second quarter of the 19th century. Greaves' own career had taken him via Yverdun in Switzerland where (1817) he had joined Pestalozzi, the Swiss educational reformer; London where (1825) he had become secretary of the London Infant School Society; Randwick in Gloucestershire where (1832) he had engaged in a scheme for the benefit of agricultural labourers; and London again, where the Aesthetic Society, founded by him, met at his house in Burton Crescent. He was a follower of Jacob Boehme and became saturated with German transcendentalism. But it was at Alcott House on Ham Common that his followers congregated and a school was organized to give effect to his educational views. It was, however, not until Greaves' death in March 1842 that Alcott House was reorganized as the First Concordium, a community based on Greaves' transcendental, vegetarian and ascetic principles. 'The members, to be called Concordists, were to unite for the purposes of submitting to the universal law until they 'accord or concord with it'. Here in the Concordium, the triune law of goodness, wisdom and power, 'the most lawful, intelligent and efficient conditions for divine progress in humanity' would be worked out. The regimen was based on the spartan rules of life enunciated by James Pierrepont Greaves: 'Pure air, simple food, exercise and cold water are much more beneficial to man, than any national doctrinal creeds, or any churches, chapels, or cathedrals'. And a stern regimen it proved to be. Members rose at 5.30 a.m. and after repairing to the bath-house went for their morning run; at 6.15 a bell rang summoning them to their occupation. They breakfasted at 8 a.m. on brown bread, or Scotch oatmeal bread, figs and cold vegetables, returning at 9 a.m. to their occupations. The children lunched at 12 noon, the adults at 1 p.m., and during each meal there would be reading. At two o'clock in the afternoon they would return to work, continuing till half past four. The last meal, signalized by the ringing of a bell, took place at 6 p.m., and after this there was a lecture. The meals were spartan. The consumption of flesh, butter, cheese, eggs, mustard, vinegar, oil, spices, beer, wine, tea, coffee, and chocolate was banned; and the school (with fees of £5 a quarter) specialized in shoemaking, carpentry and gardening. Friendly visitors were accommodated on Sundays and Mondays at 6d. a meal and 6d. a bed. One of these visitors (on 28 April 1843) was Robert Owen. The dress was equally utilitarian: each member were a brown holland or cotton blouse, a neat check shirt without neck cloth or any other clumsy wrapper round the neck. Hats and caps were rarely worn on the premises. But, living as they did near the metropolis, concessions had to be made: 'When going out each dresses rather more in accordance with the world without, which to them is more like a foreign country than their native above.' One of the principal objects of the Concordium was to prepare missionaries for the cause. A new monthly The New Age>, first published in May 1843 from 'the Concordium Press' stressed the importance of employing the people on the land.' [W.H.G. Armytage, Heavens Below: utopian experiments in England, 1560-1960>, 1961, pp.178-9]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Vases Japonais

Paris:Paris. Box. Very Good Plus. A suite of 23 dazzling color plates of Japanese vases produced with a novel "pochoir"-like process around 1840. Each measures 46.5 by 35.5 cm, and in a small cursive handwritten note on the title page, the prints are described as "aquarelles miniatures", which happens to be the term Beauvalet used for his process. Beauvalet published a book in 1835 entitled "Aquarelle-Miniature Perfectionnee reflets metallique et chatoyans et peintre a l'huile sur velous en six leons," and in this book he speaks of a process of mixing watercolors which were to be successively applied to paper in a stencil process -- tantamount to what is now known as pochoir. Whether the procedure described accurately described fully what Beauvalet actually did so that the same effects could be replicated, it is indisputable that Beauvalet managed to achieve an uniquely lustrous effect, with colors and a sheen produced in this and the small body of other works credited to Beauvalet that were unlike anything else being produced at the time, whether through outright painting, start to finish, or any other kind of printing technology. Unlike the best chromolithography, for example, there is a softness to the color, and the tonal gradation is peerless. Notwithstanding the publication of this work, Beauvalet's process did not catch on.Just like later pochoir, to be done right the process was both labor and skill intensive -- it was not necessarily less demanding than simply traditional painting. And it would appear that even though this work was "printed", not many copies of it were made. Indeed, we have not been able to locate any other copies of this work. Beauvalet did produce two large series of plates using the same process, one consisting of 96 drawings of ancient and Etruscan vases and other objects, made at the behest of Louis Philippe, and a series of drawings of fruits and butterflies for the Empress Marie Louise (the second wife of Napoleon, who after his overthrow, became the Duchess of Parma). This group of Japanese vases was owned by A. M. Plailly, which we know from the small inscription on the title page. Unknown if the set is complete. All the vases are bright and fresh. Light occasional hand soiling to the margins. One minor marginal closed tear. Two plates with darker corner soiling, not coming close to the image (nor within the framing lines). One plate with a large-ish corner loss, also not coming even close to the image. The backs of all the plates have four paste spots, indicating that at one time the suite was matted and framed. Now housed in a modern black cloth box.
