      Audubon J. J. & Chevalier J.B. 1840-44, New York & Philadelphia - A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet size: 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon, FRS, FLS and lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen, Philadelphia from The First Royal Octavo Edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Includes the text from Audubon's Ornithological Biography. The Royal Octavo Edition of The Birds of America represents John James Audubon's desire to create a democratic (affordable) work based his magnum opus; the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. Satisfied with his research, as well as his portrayals of North America's native and distinct bird species, J.J. Audubon here rendered a miniature yet unique version of The Birds of America.As is the case with prolific artists, Audubon continued to improve upon a body of work which was viewed as perfection. During the mid-19th century, there were no photomechanical means of reproduction, every composition was then redrawn by hand, with the aid of the Camera Lucida. For this Royal Octavo Edition Audubon and his assistants translated the 435 compositions of the Double Elephant Folio edition into 500 unique compositions of individual species. Previously documented groups of heretofore unrelated birds were now separated and divided according to species, and portrayed either on a new botanical perch or within a renewed landscape. Unlike the life-sized portraits of the Double Elephant Folio edition each bird was now sized to scale on the octavo-sized plate; approximately 6.5 x 10.25 inches. With this slight alteration, Audubon created a perfected composition, and thus offered a charming vignette view of the bird, or family of birds in its natural setting. For the Royal Octavo Edition, Audubon enlisted America's premier lithographers, JT Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia and Endicott in New York to produce the work. Every composition was drawn on a limestone tablet, inked, printed and then hand-colored with watercolor. In this format Audubon presented the undocumented birds discovered during his explorations of the American West, but not previously included in the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. As with the folio edition, the Royal Octavo Edition was sold by subscription. One hundred individual packets of five hand-colored lithographs and accompanying text; Audubon's Ornithological Biography, was sent to the subscriber. It was issued the first and fifteenth of each month for four subsequent years. The pagination of the Royal Octavo Edition was organized to be bound in seven volumes. This successful and popular work of American ornithology was produced in an eventual eight editions, the final edition of which was issued in 1870 by George Lockwood, New York. (Wood, Casey.         THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, FROM DRAWINGS MADE IN THE UNITED STATES AND THEIR TERRITORIES

      New York & Philadelphia: Audubon and J.B.Chevalier, 1840-1844.. Seven volumes. 500 handcolored lithographed plates after Audubon by W.E. Hitchcock, R. Trembley, and others, printed by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia (plates 1-135, 151- 500) or George Endicott of New York (plates 136-150); numerous wood-engraved anatomical figures in text. Royal octavo. Half titles. Period half black morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt. Spines a bit rubbed. Scattered foxing, generally to the tissue guards and text. Else very good. The first octavo edition of "Audubon's Great National Work." This is the first complete edition and the first American edition. The work is one of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history books published in America in the nineteenth century...[also] representing the best of pre-Civil War American lithography and giving Audubon the opportunity finally to display his scholarship and genius to a large American audience for the first time" (Ron Tyler). The plates, here accompanied by the text for the first time, were reduced and variously modified from the Havell engravings in the double elephant folio. Seven new species are figured, and seventeen others, previously described in the ORNITHOLOGICAL BIOGRAPHY but not illustrated, were also shown for the first time. Audubon may have been prompted to publish the reduced version of his double elephant folio by the appearance in 1839 of John Kirk Townsend's rival ORNITHOLOGY OF THE UNITED STATES; or, as he writes in the introduction to the present work, he may have succumbed to public demand and his wish that a work similar to his large work should be published, but "at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his Library." The first edition of the octavo work is certainly the most famous and accessible of all American color plate books, and now represents the only realistic opportunity that exists for collectors to own an entire collection of Audubon images in a form that was overseen and approved by the great artist himself. The octavo BIRDS OF AMERICA was originally issued in 100 parts, each containing five plates executed by the Philadelphia lithographer, J.T. Bowen. The whole story of the production of the book, with detailed information about every aspect of the project, is told by Ron Tyler in AUDUBON'S GREAT NATIONAL WORK (Austin, 1993). The story Tyler tells of the difficulties of production and marketing are revealing of the whole world of color printing in mid- 19th-century America. By combining detailed text with careful observations next to his famous images, Audubon proved that he was as good a scientific naturalist as the members of the scientific establishment who had scorned him.         A New Topographical Map of the Country in the Vicinity of London, Describing All the New Improvements, Metropolitan Boroughs and Parish Boundaries.

      London: James Wyld c 1840 - Map dimensions 82 x 82 cm, overall 84 x 85.5 cm. Folding map of London showing the extents from Edmonton down to Mitcham and Plumstead across to Chiswick, original colour in block and outline marking out the county and municipal boundaries, parks and bodies of water, the railways are indicated in red and a circular line marks the extents of the Twopenny Post, dissected into 28 sections and mounted on linen, marbled paper to the folded end sections, one with a slightly later ownership inscription, diced brown cloth slipcase with a publisher's label to the upper board. The slipcase a little worn, but sound, save for some minor toning to the paper the map is in very good condition. Cf. Howgego, 250, this an intermediary issue with Wyld described as "Geographer to Her Majesty" and other revisions, but with the dedication to Queen Victoria. Faden first published the map in 1810, it was subsequently updated and republished at regular intervals up to the 1860's.

        Probate copy of Commissioner Bigge's will [d. 1843]

      York, 1840. Manuscript in ink on parchment, 525 x 690 mm, with probate documents and seal; in fine condition, original folds. Commissioner Bigge and his painting of the native dog of nsw. Original probate copy of Commissioner Bigge's final will of 1840 (made three years before his death), here probated, signed and sealed in York in 1845. An austere and difficult figure, Bigge had died alone in London following an accident at the Grosvenor Hotel; he was buried as his will here shows that he required, 'without ceremony or superfluous expense'. John Thomas Bigge had been one of the most controversial visitors to New South Wales in the early colonial period, effectively bringing down Macquarie's government when he played Sir John Kerr to Macquarie's Whitlam during the colony's greatest and grandest early expansion. Bigge's Commission of Enquiry into the transportation system proved in fact a systematic London-promoted assault on Macquarie's administration of New South Wales that ultimately forced the governor's resignation. Bigge was also sometime Chief Judge of Trinidad as well as Commissioner of Enquiry to the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. He died a man of some means, making bequests of about twenty-five thousand pounds in cash as well as properties in Ludgate Hill and Little Bridge Street, London. His will shows his connection to an elite band of colonial administrators, with cash bequests to some of his former colleagues including the former governor of Antigua, and one of the judges of Trinidad. To his sister-in-law Mrs Hanway Bigge he leaves 'the Mahogany Press that was made for me in the island of Mauritius'. Of particular interest is his bequest to his friend Lord Colborne of Berkeley Square of a 'picture which I caused to be drawn of the native dog of New South Wales'. Who did he cause to make the picture? And was the specific bequest of a picture of a dingo to be a wry joke from beyond the grave? The dingo had been known in England from the 1790s when Governor Phillip had arranged for a live specimen to be delivered to the Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House.

The cunning face of ‘Cartouche,’ in the tale of that name, is strikingly similar to Becky Sharp’s in ‘Vanity Fair,’ published nine years later. (Grolier 14; Van Duzer 159)

        The Shooting Party - Ranton Abbey

      [London] 1840 - Mixed-method engraving, coloured by hand, by William Henry Simmons. A fine image recalling one of the first great Victorian shooting estates. Ranton Abbey estate in Staffordshire, England, was owned by the Earl of Lichfield. In the early part of the rich 19th-century, landowners vied with each other to create preserves for game, improve their coverts and produce ever large bags at shooting parties. The Earl spent large sums of money on improving his estate and during the 1830s held a series of great shooting parties which made Ranton a centre for Liberal sporting hospitality. Sir Francis Grant often shot with the Earl and the original from which this print is taken still hangs in the present Earl of Lichfield's house at Shugborough. The people pictured include the first Earl of Lichfield, Lord Melbourne, then Prime Minister, Lord Sefton and the Earl of Uxbridge. Sir Francis Grant was largely self-taught, primarily through imitating Velazquez. His early works were primarily to do with fox hunting, but, as demonstrated here, he had an exceptional capacity for portraiture. He painted an equestrian portrait of Lord Melbourne and Queen Victoria and this proved to be the beginning of an enormously successful career painting portraits of most of Britain's most prominent men and women, including the Royal family and several prime ministers, Siltzer p.131.

Nach dem Tod seines Vaters wurde er 1688 Kurfürst von Brandenburg. 1696 gründete er die Academie der Mal-, Bild- und Baukunst, 1700 die Kurfürstlich-Brandenburgische Societät der Wissenschaften, die spätere Akademie der Wissenschaften, deren erster Präsident Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz wurde. Am 18.01.1701 krönte Friedrich I. sich in Königsberg selbst zum König von Preussen. Dieser Tag gilt als Gründungsdatum Preussens. Friedrich I. war der erste brandenburgische Kurfürst, der den Königstitel Preussens trug.
